Raymond J. Buttram Sr.

April 17, 1940 -- Sept. 9, 2002

Raymond J. Buttram died in his Neah Bay home of arteriosclerotic disease. He was 62.

Born in Oneida, Tenn., to Millard and Nettie (Blevins) Buttram, he married Glenda Irving on Oct. 10, 1960, in Neah Bay.

Mr. Buttram served with the Air Force from 1957 to 1961 and worked as a painter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton.

In addition to his wife, sons Victor and Raymond ``Joe'' Jr., and daughters Mardell McGimpsey and Belinda Buttram, all of Neah Bay, and daughter Susan McKean of Michigan, Mr. Buttram's survivors include his mother of Texas; brother Larry of Virginia; sisters Barbara Cueter of Michigan and Arbia Pickens, Rose Teague and Sharon Harris, all of Texas; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Today, Sept. 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., visitation in Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles; Friday, Sept. 13, at 11:30 a.m., funeral, also in Drennan & Ford with the Rev. Stan Pearson officiating.

Helen L. Johnson

Aug. 11, 1922 -- Sept. 9, 2002

Sequim resident Helen L. Johnson died from cancer in Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center at age 80.

She was born in Louisville, Ky., to Jack and Hazel (Graily) Poynter.

She married Lloyd E. Johnson in Silverlake on July 13, 1956.

Survivors include her husband of Sequim; son Lloyd E. Johnson III of Bonney Lake; daughters Diane Krouse of Everett, Helen Willey of Sultan, Sharon Kennedy of Lake Stevens and Sheryl Ross of Sequim; and nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sons Brian Klukas and Dennis Ramental.

Services: Today, Sept. 12, 3 p.m. memorial at Sequim Valley Chapel, 108 W. Alder St., Sequim. the Rev. Thomas Beattie will preside.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 861, Port Angeles, WA 98362; or, American Diabetes Association, 537 Roy St., lower level, Seattle, WA 98103. No flowers please.

Sharra Lynn McDougall

Sept. 15, 1939 -- Aug. 24, 2002

Lifelong Port Angeles resident Sharra Lynn McDougall died of a heart attack in Olympic Memorial Hospital at age 62.

She was the daughter of John and Francis Gort.

She married Edward J. McDougall in Seattle; he died Oct. 21, 1991.

Mrs. McDougall was employed at Ruddell Auto Mall in Port Angeles.

She is survived by daughter EJ Lynn McDougall, brothers John Gort and Mike Gort and sister Patricia Bradshaw, all of Port Angeles, as well as sister Chris Needham of Sequim and one grandchild.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Daniel Gort.

Services: Private family service in Ocean View Cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge.

Memorials: American Heart Association, 4414 Woodland Park N., Seattle, WA 98103; and American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 861, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

LeRoy Robert Walker

Aug. 10, 1927 -- Sept. 9, 2002

LeRoy Robert Walker died in Port Angeles from diabetes and congestive heart failure. He was 75.

Born in Quilcene to Fred and May (Such) Walker, he was a corporal in the Army at Fort Lewis. He also worked as a mill heavy-machine operator and was employed by the city of Port Angeles.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his wife, Violet, and his wife, Joy, before he married Candace Laurie Ray in September 1997 in Reno, Nev.

Survivors include his wife; brother Floyd Walker; and numerous stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services: Friday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m., graveside in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles, with Chaplain Dale Butler officiating. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Irene Busch

March 3, 1912 -- Sept. 11, 2002

Mary Irene Busch died in her Port Angeles home at age 90.

She was born in Plainville, Iowa, to Henry and Bertha (Bangs) Busch, then grew up in Allison, Iowa, which she enjoyed returning for visits throughout her lifetime.

Miss Busch, who never married, was a schoolteacher in Iowa, Idaho, Oregon and Michigan before moving to Port Angeles in 1948 to teach at Roosevelt Junior High School. She taught vocational home economics for 23 years, before retiring in 1971.

She was an active hiker, photographer, beachcomber and skier.

Miss Busch also belonged to Klahhane Club and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

She is survived by nephew and wife Robert and Donna Fuls of Iowa; grandnephew and wife David and Susan Fuls and grandniece and husband Deborah and Jeff Fuls Schense; four great-grandnephews and one great-grandniece.

Miss Busch was preceded in death by brother William Busch and sister Lenetta Fuls.

Services: Memorial will be held later. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Lewis John Keller

March 15, 1916 -- Sept. 6, 2002

Lewis John Keller of Port Angeles died in Swedish Hospital, Seattle, at age 86 after a short illness.

Born in Mandan, N.D., to John G. and Babbette (Baumann) Keller, he graduated from Dickinson State Teacher's College in 1934 and taught in the rural school system of North Dakota until shortly before World War II.

After moving with friends to Seattle, he worked at Boeing until he entered the Army Air Corps in 1942.

Serving as a navigator and bombardier, Mr. Keller flew 50 successful missions over the Pacific and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained when his squadron came under attack. He later attained the rank of captain in the Air Force Reserve.

He married Vivian Leder, also a schoolteacher from North Dakota, in Seattle on April 18, 1942.

After his military duty, the Kellers made their home in Seattle, where he owned and operated an independent insurance agency for more than 50 years.

He was active in Kiwanis and St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Seattle.

Mr. Keller moved to Port Angeles in 2001 to be near his daughter.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Lewis and Maija Keller Jr. of Lacey and Bruce and Barbara Keller of Seattle; daughter and partner Karen Keller and Frances Sisson of Port Angeles; daughters and sons-in-law Marilyn and Doug Curtis of Alaska, Vivian Keller and Charles Bobinchuck of Florida, and Angie and Tom Ferrato of Arizona; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years who died Sept. 16, 1998.

Services: Monday, Sept. 16, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., visitation in Bleitz Funeral Home, 316 Florentia St., Seattle, with Rosary at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m., funeral Mass in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 5816 15th Ave. NW, Seattle.

Memorials: Laurel Park Assisted Living Activities Program, 1133 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles, WA 98362; or Olympic Medical Home Health, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Joel Dean Percy

May 31, 1958 -- Aug. 19, 2002

Former Port Angeles resident Joel Dean Percy died in Lacey at age 44.

He was born in Winner, S.D., to Donald and Sandra (Hartsell) Percy and graduated from high school in Port Angeles.

Mr. Percy, who was divorced, is survived by companion Kristine Ouw; son Joshua Percy; daughters Alisha Percy and Bobbi-Jean Sudderth; mother Sandra; brothers Todd and Duane Ruzicka; grandmother Marguerite Ayers of Sequim; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald, stepfather Willard ``Bill'' Ruzicka, and brother Michael.

Services: Memorial was held in Lacey on Aug. 23. There was cremation. Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Frank W. Dakan

Aug. 21, 1916 -- Sept. 9, 2002

Frank W. Dakan of Sequim died in Olympic Memorial Hospital follow a long battle with heart and lung problems. He was 86.

He was born to Frank William and Mary (Blunt) Dakan Sr. near Castle Rock, Colo., where he attended school before majoring in electrical engineering at then-Colorado State College.

He served two years in the Air Force.

After retiring from Continental Air Lines, he moved to Canon City, Colo., where he managed a Western Auto store.

Mr. Dakan also owned a repair shop in which he took great satisfaction in helping low-income people. In other endeavors, he operated a travel agency and worked in real estate.

His pastimes included fishing, hunting and horses. While with Continental Air Lines, he earned his commercial pilot's license.

In Sequim, Mr. Dakan was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Newcomers Club.

His first marriage, to Beth Kirkpatrick, in Georgetown, Colo., ended with her death in 1974.

In 1977, he married Ruth McKown, who survives him. Other survivors include son Charles Dakan of Peyton, Colo.; daughter Dorothy Olsen of Canon City, Colo.; sister Lois Reid of Elkhorn, Neb.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sister Louise Christianson.

Services: Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m., memorial in Holt Funeral Home, Canyon City, Colo. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Memorials: Charity of choice. No flowers, please.

Etha M. Holbrook

June 6, 1912 -- Sept. 9, 2002

Etha M. Holbrook died of ovarian cancer at Sherwood Assisted Living Center in Sequim at age 89.

Mrs. Holbrook was born to Orphy and Oka (Rector) Pulis in Manhattan, Kan.

She married Robert R. Holbrook in Port Townsend on Aug. 13, 1977.

Survivors include her husband of Sequim; stepson Robert S. Holbrook of Louisville, Colo.; daughters and sons-in-law Ina and Richard Lukens of Incline Village, Nev., and Pennie and Patrick LeFehvre of Portland, Ore.; stepdaughters Charlene Ackerman of Tuckerton, N.J., and Marilyn Davis of Reno, Nev.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: No services. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 861, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Dayna Lynn Kelly

Sept. 9, 1963 -- Sept. 4, 2002

Former Sequim resident Dayna Lynn Kelly died of coronary artery disease in Fort Worth, Texas, at age 38.

She was born in Elk City, Okla., to Joseph M. and Maureen E. (McCabe) Kelly.

She earned her associate degree from Peninsula College in Port Angeles and her bachelor's degree at Central Washington University.

She was a personnel recruiter in Washington, California, Kansas, Kentucky and Texas.

Ms. Kelly is survived by close friend Ray Ward of Fort Worth, Texas; her mother; and sisters Kerry Kelly of Tacoma, Coleen Tanner of Fort Worth, Texas, and Patrice Shepherd of Port Angeles.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Services: Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. memorial in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. The Rev. Thomas W. Beattie will preside. Greenwood Funeral Home, Fort Worth, Texas, was in charge.

H. Roberta Oakes

April 7, 1911 -- Sept. 12, 2002

Port Angeles resident H. Roberta Oakes died at age 91.

Her obituary will be published later.

Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT EUGENE SINDARS

June 27, 1931- Sept. 13, 2002

Robert Eugene Sindars died in Port Angeles from a broken blood vessel. He was 71.

Born in Sequim to Guy Fredrick and Myrtle (Wheeler) Sindars, he lived on the North Olympic Peninsula much of his life and attended Sequim schools.

From March 1951 to March 1955, he was on active duty with the Navy aboard USS Suisun.

After his discharge, Mr. Sindars was a meatcutter with Tradewell in Port Angeles until the store closed. He then transferred to Aberdeen and Seattle, before returning to Port Angeles to work at Haguewood's Restaurant in 1988. He retired in 1993.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and of National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. His favorite pastimes were fishing at various lakes and rivers with his family and friends and playing cards. Some of his best times and biggest fish stories were with is coffee buddies. Bob was also known for his terrible jokes, which we will miss greatly.

His biggest joy in life was raising his grandson Michael with Wanda.

On Sept. 2, 1951, Mr. Sindars married Wanda Luttrell in Port Angeles. In addition to his wife, survivors include his sons Ricky L., Robin K., and Rocky G. Sindars, all of Port Angeles; sister Dorthea Larson of Arizona; and brother Ray Riefenstahl of Marysville.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Andrew Sindars, in 2001, and by his half-brother, Fred Sindars, in 1992.

Services will be Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m., graveside at Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Omer Vigoren will officiate. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
