Andrew S. Gallo
March 13, 1948 -- July 26, 2002
Sunny Farms Country Store grocery manager Andrew S. Gallo died of pancreatic cancer in his Port Angeles home at age 54.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Salvatore J. and Nordine ``Nettie" (Liccota) Gallo Sr., and was a professional musician for 20 years.
Mr. Gallo was a member of Provinder Alliance Organization and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He also lived in California and Nevada. He was grocery manager of the store at 261461 Highway 101 in Carlsborg.
In addition to his wife, the former Annette Myers, he is survived by sons Giovanni Gallo and Joseph Gallo; daughters Gina Gallo, Robin Gallo, Sasheen Gallo, Jamine Gallo and Ariana Gallo; mother; brothers Charles Gallo and Salvatore Gallo; sister Pauline Gallo; and five grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m., memorial in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 815 W. Highway 101, Sequim, with Glade Birch and Scott Dickson officiating. Cremains will be buried in Sequim View Cemetery. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Martha Kavanagh
Sept. 7, 1908 -- July 28, 2002
Homemaker Martha Kavanagh died in Port Angeles Care Center at age 93.
She was one of 11 children born to John Jacob and Christina Elizabeth (Fuches) Weinmeister in Rhein, Saskatchewan, where her family homesteaded in the late 1800s.
She graduated from Saskatchewan Teachers College in 1929 and was a teacher in Rhein from 1929 to 1933.
She was a homemaker -- living in Shelby, Mont., in 1938-83; Arizona City, Ariz., in 1983-98; and Port Angeles since 1998.
Her first marriage was to Stuart W. Hannah in Shelby, Mont., in 1938.
In 1951, also in Montana, she married William Carroll Kavanagh. He died in 1984.
Mrs. Kavanagh was an avid golfer for more than 60 years -- until she was age 90 -- and recorded holes-in-one on three occasions. She also loved to take care of her flower gardens, sing, play the piano, and play cards.
Survivors include sons Mark Hannah of Port Angeles and Harvey Hannah of Seminole, Texas; stepson John Kavanagh of Whitefish, Mont.; stepdaughters Margaret Thompson of Missoula, Mont., and Carolyn Kavanagh of Des Plaines, Ill.; brother Edward Weinmeister of Kelowna, British Columbia; sisters Leah Browning of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Sarah Mang of Regina, Saskatchewan; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services: Sunday, Aug. 4, at 3 p.m., memorial in St. Andrew's Place, 520 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles, where a reception will follow. Cremains will be scattered in Arizona. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Gross Parker
May 21, 1924 -- July 28, 2002
Helen Gross Parker died of congestive heart failure at Crestwood Convalescent Center, Port Angeles, at age 78.
She was born the third of four children to Myron W. and Charlotte (Macomber) Gross in Walla Walla, where she graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1942.
After high school she worked at Boeing Aircraft Co. as a rivet bucker. Boeing sent her to school to learn drafting. She also worked at the Army depot in Auburn.
On Oct. 14, 1945, she married James C. Parker in the First Christian Church, Seattle. That marriage was later sealed in the Salt Lake City temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in June 1958. They were married for 48 years.
Mrs. Parker was active in the Skyway Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars for many years, including service as district president.
While serving in many church positions over the years in the Seattle and Sequim areas, she completed five full-time missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints between 1988 and 1997. Two of those missions were at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City.
Her hobbies were genealogy and quilting.
Mrs. Parker also served as a volunteer at the Serenity House Thrift Store in Sequim.
Survivors include son Warin J. Parker of Santa Rosa, Calif; daughters Charlotte Edwards of Annapolis, Md., and Mary Ann Fawcett of Heber, Utah; foster son Jerry Cox of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; brother Dr W. Alvin Gross of Port Angeles; sister Shirley Marchbanks of Sequim; 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son Myron C. Parker; grandson W. Jared Parker; and brother, Warin L. Gross.
Services: Friday, Aug. 2, 11 a.m. graveside services and interment, at Greenwood Memorial Park, 350 Monroe Ave. NE, Renton. On the same day a memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Second Ward chapel, 815 W. Washington St., Sequim.

Dennis David Ditzenberger
March 26, 1939 -- July 26, 2002
Former Port Angeles resident Dennis David Ditzenberger died in his Grants Pass, Ore., home at age 63.
He was born in Kearny, N.J., to George L. and Veronica F. (McCrosson) Ditzenberger.
Following naval service and work as a master printer in Chicago, he worked 22 years for City Light and was head groundsman for the city of Port Angeles.
On July 16, 2000, he married the former Shellie Smack; they moved to Grants Pass on May 1, 2002.
In Port Angeles, Mr. Ditzenberger was a 20-year member of the Masonic Lodge and served as exalted ruler of Elks Naval Lodge. He was also a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 20 years.
He enjoyed motorcycle riding, jewelry making, opera and reading.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Ditzenberger is survived by sons David of Florida, Nathan Zuanich of Grants Pass, Ore., and August Zuanich of Scofield Barr, Hawaii; daughters Sharon and Janice Eileen, both of Las Vegas, Jarlyn Warren of Peoria, Ariz., and Jessica Turnbough of Fort Bragg, N.C.; brother John A. Ditzenberger of Somerville, N.J.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Ditzenberger.
Services: Aug. 10 at 11 a.m., memorial at the Masonic Temple, 622 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles. Southern Oregon Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
Richard Irving Franklin
Jan. 7, 1930 -- July 29, 2002
Richard Irving Franklin died in his Kala Point home from lung cancer. He was 72.
Born in Seattle to Edward W. and Nina Eileen (Lightiger) Franklin, he grew up in Port Townsend, where he graduated high school in 1948 before earning his degree in mechanical engineering from Washington State College in 1954.
He was a member of the Naval Reserve in Port Townsend from 1947 to 1951.
On Sept. 9, 1951, he married Eunice Shirley King in Winlock.
After graduation from college, Mr. Franklin was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Force and before he retired as an Air Force Reserve captain in 1966, he spent two years at Wheelus Air Base in Tripoli, Libya, as well as stateside assignments at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois and Everett's Paine Field.
He was employed as a plant engineer for Scott Paper Co. in Everett and for Crown Zellerbach Corp. at Camas and City of Industry, Calif., as well as being division engineer for James River Corp. in Ypsilanti, Mich.
After retiring in 1995, Mr. Franklin moved to Kala Point at Port Townsend. He liked to travel, visiting all 50 states plus the Panama Canal and Australia. Also, he was interested in genealogical research.
In addition to his wife of 50 years, survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Richard and Barbara Franklin of Bellevue, Bradley and Linda Franklin of Chino Hills, Calif., and Douglas and Summeranne Franklin of Palm Desert, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Stacey Franklin Morgan and Bill of Los Angeles and Memphis, Tenn.; sister and brother-in-law Lael Franklin Harris and Robert of Kala Point; and eight grandchildren.
Services: At his request, none. Kosec Funeral Home was in charge of cremation.
FRED JOSEPH HEINY
April 24, 1949 - Sept. 5, 2002
Fred died peacefully on the morning of Sept. 5 after a long battle with diabetes.
Fred is survived by his mother, Kathryn Heiny, sister, Mary Heiny, both of Seattle; his former wife, Susan Heiny, of Clallam Bay; his daughter, Sarah Grafstrom, and grandson, Colton, of Beaver; and his son, Matt Winters, of Louisiana.
Fred was a longtime resident of Clallam Bay, Wash. He loved the area and was drawn to the natural beauty and the friendships of the community.
Music was the center of Fred's life. Many on the Peninsula knew him as a solo performer and member of Trillium. Despite Fred's long illness, he never lost his indomitable enthusiasm, optimism and humor. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial celebration of Fred's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at the park in Clallam Bay. A reception will follow at his home (43 E. Kellogg).

Darleen Bennett
April 18, 1930 -- Sept. 7, 2002
Darleen Bennett of Port Angeles died in Kindred Hospital, Seattle, from complications following heart surgery. She was 72.
She was born to Howard and Edith (Brauer) Kirby in Port Angeles and lived on the Peninsula for most of her life.
She married Raymond R. ``Ralph" Bennett on July 30, 1949.
She and her mother ran a small cafe, called C Street Grill, for many years, and she worked at several other local restaurants.
Mrs. Bennett was an active member of Olympic Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for 22 years, helping to organize the annual Christmas Fair up to last Christmas and making floral arrangements for the gift shop.
Her pastimes included camping and digging razor clams at ocean beaches as well as cooking and canning.
Mrs. Bennett was a member of Lighthouse Christian Center.
In addition to her husband and son, Larry Bennett, both of Port Angeles, survivors include daughter Marlene Bennett of Olympia and four grandchildren.
Services: Today, Sept. 11, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., visitation in Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles; Thursday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m., funeral in Lighthouse Christian Center, 304 Viewcrest, with the Rev. Eldon Officer officiating. Graveside service immediately following in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Observances will conclude with a reception in the church.
Samuel Jennings Dustman
Jan. 8,1910 -- Sept. 6, 2002
Lifelong Port Angeles resident Samuel Jennings Dustman died at age 92.
He was the son of Frank and Nettie Dustman, and he married Merle (Sparks) Jagger Mariacher in Tacoma in 1962.
During World War II, he served in the European Theater as an engineer with the Third Armored Division.
During the 1950s, he owned and operated Dusty's Flowers in Port Angeles.
Mr. Dustman also worked for Rayonier Inc. until his retirement in 1975.
He is survived by sons John and Sam Dustman, both of California, and Jerry, Don, Bud and Clifford Jagger, all of Washington; daughters Norma Halle of Washington and Pat Sharp of Oregon; 26 grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
His wife died July 25, 1997. He was also preceded in death by his adopted daughter, Sherry Dustman.
Services: Friday, Sept. 13, at 3 p.m., funeral in Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Tom Bryant will officiate. Private burial will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, Monroe Road and U.S. Highway 101.

Helen L. Johnson
Aug. 11, 1922 -- Sept. 9, 2002
Sequim resident Helen L. Johnson died of cancer in Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center at age 80.
She was born in Louisville, Ky., to Jack and Hazel (Graily) Poynter.
She married Lloyd E. Johnson in Silverlake on July 13, 1956.
Survivors include her husband of Sequim; son Lloyd E. Johnson III of Bonney Lake; daughters Diane Krouse of Everett, Helen Willey of Salkum, Sharon Kennedy of Lake Stevens and Cheryl Ross of Sequim; and nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sons Brian Klukas and Dennis Remental.
Services: Thursday, Sept. 12, 3 p.m. memorial at Sequim Valley Chapel, 108 W. Alder St., Sequim. Father Thomas Beattie will preside.

Jean D. Mitchel
Feb. 2, 1930 -- Aug. 31, 2002
Jean D. Mitchel died in her Port Angeles home from congestive heart failure. She was age 72.
She was born in Harvard, Ill., to Verner and Margaret (Masoni) Beauchamp.
She received a painting scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago.
From 1950 to 1957, she was an executive secretary in Chicago. From 1958 to 1978, she owned and operated a rental business in Glendale, Calif.
In addition to painting and home decorating, she enjoyed horses, supported animal rescue and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary,
Jean was employed at Clallam and Jefferson Community Action Council in Port Angeles for 12 years.
Mrs. Mitchel married John Michielutti in Chicago in 1952; they divorced in 1989.
She is survived by daughter JoAnna Lee Martin of Fairbanks, Alaska, and brothers Victor of Lake Carrol, Ill., and Ralph of Sun City, Calif. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Cleo.

Gertrude O. `Trude' Webert
Jan. 22, 1915 -- Sept. 5, 2002
Gertrude O ``Trude" Webert died in Port Angeles at age 87.
Born in Deer Park, Wis., she was one of 12 children of Fred J. and Bertha (Beese) Fauks.
She married Ellsworth J. Webert in Forest, Wis., on Aug. 24, 1935.
The Weberts farmed in Wisconsin until 1946, when they moved to Minnesota and owned and operated a hotel and restaurant.
In 1951, they relocated to Port Angeles, where they owned and operated Welcome Inn Trailer Park and, later, owned Garden Apartments.
Mrs. Webert, who was active in First United Methodist and Congregational Church, loved working in her flower gardens and watching birds.
Survivors include daughters Janet Johnson of Port Angeles and Dody Springer of Kingston; brother Otto Fauks of Milwaukee; sisters Clara Kunkel of Seattle, Edna Owen of St. Paul, Minn., and Dee Spendal of Salem, Ore.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, who died Aug. 7, 1986, Mrs. Webert was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, and two grandsons.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m., memorial in First United Methodist & Congregational Church, 110 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles. The Rev. John E. Maxwell will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
