Sylvia Balkan

May 20, 1915 -- July 1, 2002

Sylvia Balkan died of a heart attack in Sequim. She was 87.

Born in Buxton, N.D., to John Sylvester and Johanna (Runeberg) Hauge, she was a nurse's aide in Sequim for many years.

She collected dolls and angel figures and greatly enjoyed daily visits from her son, Mike.

She married Gus M. Balkan, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Mike and Linnea Balkan of Sequim and Terry and Barbara Balkan of Longview.

Survivors also include grandchildren Shelly Mez of Frieberg, Germany; Scott Balkan of Sequim; Beth ``Boo'' Balkan, Michelle Bammert and Paul Balkan, all of Seattle; Tony Balkan of Bellevue; Corey Balkan of Longview; Brian Merkeley of Covington; Nichole Balkan of Bellingham; and Tara Parcells of Illinois.

She also is survived by nine great-grandchildren.

Services: None. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Pamela J. Hammon

April 4, 1951 -- July 5, 2002

Pamela J. Hammon died of cancer at age 51 at her home in Sequim.

She was born in Yakima to Howard Lee and Marjorie (Kilgore) Meyer of Sequim.

Mrs. Hammon came to Sequim in 1981. She was an emergency medical technican with Olympic Ambulance and earlier owned and managed Burger Boys Restaurant and the Sequim Grill.

She enjoyed motor-home traveling with her husband, Robert D. Hammon, who she married in Seattle on Nov. 22, 1980. He died April 12, 1997.

Mrs. Hammon's survivors include her fiancé, Wayne Roberts, and son, Ben Cooper, both of Sequim; daughters Amber Burggarff of Seattle and Inez Calkins of Chugach, Alaska; brothers Jack Meyer of Wenatchee and Scott Meyer of Sequim; sisters Linda Steele of Kentucky and Renée Meyer of Sequim; and nine grandchildren.

Services: Private family graveside service in Gardiner Cemetery. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Charles `Kaye' Kelso

July 12, 1934 -- July 9, 2002

Lifelong Forks resident Charles ``Kaye'' Kelso died of heart failure in Forks Hospital at age 67.

The son of Roy and Elsie (Cline) Kelso, he was a logger nicknamed ``Killer'' (The Mighty Logger). Because of his knowledge and love of logging, he was once the subject of a week's filming by a TV crew from the ``Today'' show.

He married Barbara Ann Landry on Jan. 16, 1954, in Forks.

In his youth, he was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Kelso is survived by his wife, daughters Lori, Karen and LeAnne and two grandchildren, all of Forks.

Services: Friday, July 12, at 1 p.m., memorial in Forks Congregational Church, 280 S. Spartan Ave., with the Rev. David Weddington officiating. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd Donavan Neal

Nov. 30, 1929 -- July 5, 2002

After a long illness, Lloyd Donavan Neal of Sequim died in Overlake Hospital, Bellevue. He was 72.

He was born in The Dalles, Ore., to Wayne D. and Bertha (Robertson) Neal.

He served with the Marines during the Korean War and attended the University of Oregon.

On March 16, 1985, he married Trudi Griem.

In addition to his wife, survivors include son Robert; daughters Debb, Hillary and Tammie; stepdaughters Wendy Zentz, Cory Zentz and Traci Zentz; brother Lawrence Neal; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services: Thursday, July 11, at 10 a.m., visitation immediately preceding the 11 a.m. funeral in Bateman Funeral Home, 915 NE Yaquina Heights Drive, Newport, Ore.

Memorials: Charity of choice.

Lucretia H. `Sally' Nichols

June 26, 1930 -- July 7, 2002

Lucretia H. ``Sally'' Nichols died in her Sequim home after a long illness from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was 72.

She was born in Denver to Albert H. and Lucretia P. Heitzler.

She graduated from the University of Colorado, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

On Oct. 28, 1952, she married Frank L. Nichols in Lake Charles, La. The Nicholses lived in Denver for 38 years before moving to Sequim in 1996.

As well as being a homemaker and community volunteer, she enjoyed traveling, playing golf and participating in a variety of arts and crafts.

Mrs. Nichols is survived by her husband; sons Rod Nichols of Tacoma and Mark Nichols of Chandler, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Services: Friday, July 12, at 11 a.m., memorial in Gardiner Community Church. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Eldene Loyette Opferkew

April 27, 1925 -- July 5, 2002

Eldene Loyette Jensen Hurd Opferkew died in Port Angeles at age 77.

She was born to Henry Emanual and Helga Olivia (Grytvik) Jensen at the family homestead near Viborg, S.D., and graduated from Viborg High School in 1942.

During World War II, she was employed at an airfield in Los Angeles.

In 1945, she married John I. Hurd, who died in 1952 after their return to Viborg.

On Jan. 27, 1954, she married Leo Henry Opferkew of Wakonda, S.D.

In 1987, the Opferkews moved to Port Angeles, where she was a member of Olympic Lodge, Sons of Norway, for many years and a leader in the annual Lutefish Dinner.

She also was a member of Women into Scandinavian History, and the Hardanger Embroidery and Rosemalling Workshop.

In addition to her husband, survivors in Port Angeles include son Larry W. Hurd; grandson John M. Hurd; granddaughter Gretchen A. Souza; and great-grandchildren Chace and Ingrid Souza. Also surviving is her brother, Marlin Jensen of Wall, S.D.

Preceding her in death were her brother, Norman Jensen, and sister, Sophie Stevens, both of Viborg.

Services: July 26 at 5 p.m., Celebration of Life potluck at Sons of Norway Olympic Lodge, Fifth and Oak streets, Port Angeles. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Darwin Ray Sage

Feb. 4, 1918 -- July 5, 2002

Longtime Sequim resident Darwin Ray Sage died from congestive heart failure at age 84.

He was born in Rathdrum, Idaho, to Hugh Roscoe and Lorene Mae (Hollar) Sage and raised in Lester, Mont., Puyallup and Kent.

He graduated from Kent High School in 1935 and was editor-in-chief of the school's first hardback annual.

On May 28, 1938, he married Lovey Helen Waldeck in Seattle.

The Sages made their home in Kent, Auburn and Walla Walla before retiring to Sequim 20 years ago.

While in Kent, Mr. Sage was president of the Chamber of Commerce and helped start Cornucopia Days.

He was a Master Mason and a life member of the Kent Masonic Lodge. He was also a charter member of the Auburn Elks Lodge and received the Golden Acorn Award from the Walla Walla Parent Student Teachers Association.

He was an artist and a cartoonist.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law David Ray and Linda Sage of Tacoma; daughter Patricia Mae Sage-Givens of Auburn; brother and sister-in-law Roy Loren and Frances Sage of Sequim; sister Dorothy Sage Saxton Richter of Sequim; grandchildren Nancy Marie Bartholomew of Bonnie Lake, and Jeff and Michelle Sage, both of Tacoma.

Mr. Sage was preceded by his wife of 64 years, who died June 20, 2002, and by his brother, Kenneth Dean Sage.

Services: Saturday, July 13, at 1 p.m., Celebration of Life in Sequim Masonic Temple, 700 S. Fifth Ave. The lodge will officiate. Inurnment will be in Sequim View Cemetery. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Darlene Ione Barrett

Nov. 22, 1926 -- July 5, 2002

Devoted wife and mother Darlene Ione Barrett died of congestive heart failure in Kai Tai Care Center, Port Townsend, at age 75.

She was born to Raymond Felix and Hazel Bell (Bittner) Duhamel in Minot, N.D., where she attended Catholic school.

As a teen-ager, she moved to Ellensburg, where she later married James Orvall Barrett on Dec. 30, 1948.

Mrs. Barrett and her family lived in Buckley for 27 years. In 1983, she and her husband moved to Port Townsend to be near relatives.

Mrs. Barrett particularly enjoyed putting together photo albums for family members. She also liked to pick pine cones, camp, travel and sew.

She is survived by her husband; sons and daughters-in-law Jim and Dixie Davidson of Ellensburg and Tom and Les Barrett of Spanaway; daughter Pat Busby of Port Angeles, and daughters and sons-in-law Cindy and George Congdon of Buckley and Susan and Jerry Blais of Port Townsend.

She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: Saturday, July 20, at noon, Celebration of Life and potluck at 1104 Grant St., Port Townsend. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, was in charge of cremation.

Helen Joyce Hilliard

April 9, 1932 -- July 7, 2002

Longtime Port Angeles resident Helen Joyce Hilliard died of complications from a stroke at age 70.

She was born in North Loup, Neb., to Richard Melvin and Mae Evelyn (Griffith) Hinzpeter and graduated from Albion (Neb.) High School.

On Dec. 17, 1950, she married Kermit L. Hilliard in Albion.

After moving to Port Angeles, Mrs. Hilliard was a bookkeeper at several Port Angeles businesses, including 17 years with Swain's General Store.

She was a Seattle Mariners baseball fan and enjoyed motor home traveling, camping, rock hunting, singing in her church choir, and needlecrafts, such as quilting, crocheting, embroidering and sewing.

Mrs. Hilliard was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and the Port Angeles Senior Center.

In Port Angeles, she is survived by her husband, son and daughter-in-law Michael L. and Becky Hilliard, daughter and son-in-law Michelle M. ``Mitzi'' and Ron Schlemmer, and brother Richard ``Butch'' Hinzpeter.

She is also survived by her son and daughter-in-law Mark A. and Tracey Hilliard of Bellevue; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Friday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitation in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles; Saturday, July 13, at noon, funeral in St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 13th and Lincoln streets, Port Angeles, with the Rev. Shawn Hazel of Sequim officiating. Burial will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. A reception in the church will follow the interment service.

Memorials: St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 132 E. 13th St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Chester P. Powers

Oct. 27, 1910 -- July 7, 2002

Port Hadlock resident Chester P. Powers died in Port Townsend of a stroke at age 91.

He was born in Granville, N.D., to Clyde E. and Esther E. (Marrow) Powers.

He married Edythe Aline Rice in Blackduck, Minn., on Feb. 22, 1929.

After growing up in Minnesota, he moved to North Dakota in 1936, to Hoodsport in 1982 and to Port Hadlock six years ago.

Before retiring in 1980, he was a 22-year employee of the American Can Co.

Mr. Powers had a lifelong love of cars and was a journeyman auto and machine mechanic.

He was a member of the Machinists Union and the American Federation of Labor.

Survivors include his wife; sons David N. Powers of Port Hadlock and C. Allen Powers of Edmonds; brothers Edward, Paul and James Powers, all of Spokane; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services: None. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

Eula Bushnell

July 10, 1901 -- July 8, 2002

Eula Bushnell died from respiratory arrest in Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center in Sequim two days before her 101st birthday.

She was born in Preston, Texas, one of nine children of Jesse and Carrie (Downs) Turner.

From 1924 to 1927, she was a cafeteria worker in the Oklahoma State Capitol.

She married Harold Neil in Oklahoma City in 1927. They both worked for the Railway Express station before moving to California in 1952. He died in 1954.

She lived in Bakersfield, Calif., where she worked as a hospital aide.

In 1974, she married Charlie Bushnell in Medford, Ore. The Bushnells lived in Sequim until he died in 1985.

With the assistance of her nephew, Vince Vining, and his wife, Bette, Mrs. Bushnell remained in the family home until March 2000. She then moved into Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was a longtime member of the Church of Christ.

Mrs. Bushnell was an avid Seattle Mariners fan and was thrilled to receive a letter and autographed baseball from the team for her 100th birthday.

Survivors include son Troy Turner of Applegate, Ore.; brother Ira Turner of Delano, Calif.; sister Reba Campbell of Bakersfield, Calif.; brother-in-law George Stares of Sequim; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: None. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge.
