LAURENCE GEORGE BUNN
Nov. 30, 1921-March 15, 2001
Laurence G. Bunn, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away unexpectedly Friday, March 15, 2002, at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles, Wash.
Mr. Bunn was born in Butte Falls, Ore., to Rosemary Gabrio and Charles Cobb Bunn on Nov. 30, 1921. He grew up in the Sekiu and Clallam Bay areas and attended school at the historic Sekiu School and later at Clallam Bay schools.
Laurence enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 13, 1943. He was in the 179th Infantry Division and saw action in northern France and Germany. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal in November 1944. He was honorably discharged with a Certificate of Medical Disability. Mr. Bunn remained a hero, friend, and beloved family man.
Laurence married Verna Rosella Bowechop May 29, 1953, at the Neah Bay Presbyterian Church. The Bunns made their home in Neah Bay where they had raised their family.
Mr. Bunn started his construction company in 1955. He formed a partnership with Jess Richards in 1979 and they incorporated Bunn Construction in 1988. Their work is renown for quality workmanship. Mr. Bunn has volunteered numerous hours to the Makah Tribe with his heavy equipment. He always donated to the community and many clubs and organizations when asked.
Laurence was a member of the Makah Cattlemen's Association and was an avid sportsman. He loved fly fishing, hunting elk and deer, at times riding his horse to do so. He had a deep love for the Neah Bay community.
He also loved to spend time with his grandchildren and many special friends throughout the Olympic Peninsula.
Mr. Bunn was a pillar in the village and will be deeply missed.
Survivors: Wife Verna Rosella Bunn; daughter Laurette M. Venske of Seattle, Wash., son-in-law Leon Venske, Sr.; daughter-in-law Carol Forgey; grandchildren, Leon Jr., Ramona and Roxanne Venske, Marlina Figueroa, Cheyenne and Jon Winterhawk, Jr.; cousins Bob Gabrio of Cougar, Ore., Joe Gabrio of Eugene, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Rosemary Cooper, brother Russell Bunn and son Jon Winterhawk.

JEAN B. SHOLD
March 1, 1920 -- March 25, 2002
At age 82, Jean B. Shold died of a heart attack at her Sequim home. Mrs. Shold was born on March 1, 1920, in Quilcene, to Henry and Katherine (Schauer) Link.
On Dec. 16, 1939, she was married in Chimacum to Thomas Shold. Mr. Shold preceded her in death May 23, 1996.
Jean was a housewife who resided in Irondale, Chimacum and Sequim.
Her greatest joy in life was taking care of and being with her family. She was a champion pie baker. Her other interests included picking blackberries, cones, fishing in earlier years, bingo and traveling. She was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary.
Spare moments were used making beautifully crocheted work, which we all loved to receive as gifts. Her energy and spirit were amazing and a wonder to all who knew her.
Survivors include sons Jeff Shold and wife Linda of Sequim; daughter Gail I. Neske of Sequim; brother Charles Link of Olympia; sisters Hazel Fluckinger of Shelton, Francis Shuler and husband Jerry of Northport, Fla., and Clara Newsted of Portland, Ore., great-grandchildren Tony Neske, Joe Neske, Alexis Neske, Kyle Shold, Kirsten Shold Gorr, Kristopher Shold and Kent Shold, and great-great-grandchildren Teana Neske, Curtis Gorr and Bailey Gorr.
Jean was preceded in death by sisters Mae, Adeline, Anne and Mary; brothers Andy, Leslie, Allen and Henry.
Saturday, March 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. there will be an open house at Mrs. Shold's residence at Spruce West Mobile Park #120, Sequim.

Virginia Mae Cooke
Oct. 13, 1909 -- March 26, 2002
Longtime former Port Angeles resident Virginia Mae Cooke died in McKay Healthcare, Ephrata, at age 92.
She was born in Malaga to James Melvin and Iva (Gulick) Derting.
On Oct. 10, 1927, she married Gordon S. Cooke in Wenatchee; he died in 1987.
The Cookes came to Port Angeles in 1951. He worked for Olympic National Park and she was a stay-at-home mom who practiced her faith by praying daily for their children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Cooke was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Port Angeles.
Her pastimes included Bible reading and enjoying nature.
Survivors include sons Gordon Dale Cooke of Coquille, Ore., and Lloyd Dean Cooke of Aumsville, Ore.; daughters Virginia Mae Graham of Ephrata, Vivian Louise McKeen of Wenatchee, Marilyn Lucille Cooke of Sequim and Rosalie Kay Esham of Olympia; brother and sister-in-law Harold and Helen Derting of Hayden Lake, Idaho; sister Mable Lynn and sister-in-law Dorothy Derting, both of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; 18 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Services: Tuesday, April 2, at 11 a.m., visitation and funeral in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles. Pastor Kurt Johnson of the Seventh-day Adventist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, 312 W. 18th St., Port Angeles.
On April 6 at 3 p.m., there will be a memorial in the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Ephrata. Stevens Funeral Chapel, Othello, is in charge of arrangements.
Lenora Dawes
Jan. 31, 1914 -- March 27, 2002
Sequim resident Lenora Dawes died at age 88.
She was born in Arroyo Grande, Calif., to Walter R. and Alice (Mosier) Dodge and received her education, through high school, in Chico, Calif., before training and then practicing at Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco, from 1932 to 1938, as a registered nurse.
On June 2, 1938, she married James W. Dawes in Trinity Methodist Church at San Francisco.
Mrs. Dawes lived in the San Francisco Bay Area until 1945, after which she lived in Chico for 42 years, serving at Enloe Hospital. In 1987, she and her husband relocated to Sequim.
Mrs. Dawes was also a homemaker and loving mother who, in addition to traveling, camping and gardening, enjoyed the traditional arts of sewing, embroidery and cooking.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years; son James G. Dawes of Oroville, Calif.; daughter Jeannine Dawes of Federal Way; sister Maxine Wright of Bethel, Maine; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her brother Russell and sister Wendy.

Dallas Ray Gardner
Nov. 16, 1929 -- March 17, 2002
Former Lake Sutherland resident Dallas Ray Gardner died in Montesano at age 72.
He was born in Jenkins, Ky., to James Albert and Ora Grace (Phipps) Gardner.
On June 29, 1952, he married Barbra Ernestine Sanders in Montesano; they divorced
in April 1968, and he never remarried.
Mr. Gardner lived with his family in Raymond until his marriage, then relocated to Lake Sutherland, where he lived until he moved to Port Angeles in 1961. In 1968, he went to Aberdeen, where he worked in the woods until his retirement in 1989. He then moved to Montesano.
Mr. Gardner was employed in the timber industry as a logger.
His favorite pastimes included spending time with his brothers and sisters, gardening and yard maintenance.
Mr. Gardner is survived by his sons Bobbie Ray, Michael Dallas, Wendell ``Doc" Ernest and Shawn René; daughters Susan Inez Estep and Lisa Shope; brothers Cossie of Aberdeen, Tommy of Florence, Ore., Ronald of Port Angeles, Charles of Tokeland and Kenny of Lebam; sisters Alma Harmon of Silverton, Ore., Katy Parries of Raymond; 13 grandchildren and one granddaughter.
Services: At a later time, there will be a memorial at Lake Sutherland. Coleman Mortuary, Hoquiam, is in charge of arrangements.

Marilynn May Hagen
Feb. 8, 1948 -- March 24, 2002
Former Sequim resident Marilynn May Hagen of Sumner died of cancer in Puyallup. She was 54.
Mrs. Hagen was born in Seattle, to James B. and Deloris May (Karfstedt) Carter and, on April 29, 1967, married Ronnie Gene Hagen in St. Mathews Catholic Church, Seattle.
She was a beautician who owned and operated Shylock's Hair Design in Seattle before moving to Sequim, where she was golf administrative assistant to her husband, who was the golf pro and a partner at Dungeness Golf Course. After this, the Hagens moved to Sumner.
She is survived by her husband; daughters Lisa M. Hagen-Lyle of Monroe and Tamara A. Sofie of Port Angeles; father James B. Carter of Chehalis and mother Deloris Karfstedt of Kenmore; five brothers and sisters; and six grandchildren.
Services: Monday, April 1, from 4-7 p.m. visitation in Hoffner, Fisher & Harvey, 508 N. 36th St., Seattle; Tuesday, April 2, at 1 p.m., funeral Mass in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 8900 35th Ave. NE, Seattle, with the Rev. Tim Clark celebrating. Burial will follow in Holyrood Cemetery, 205 NE 205th St., Edmonds, after which there will be a reception at Harbor Inn, 110 W. Dayton St., Edmonds.

Richard I. Halliday
March 27, 1929 -- March 26, 2002
Lifelong Port Townsend resident Richard I. Halliday died from diabetes the day before his 73rd birthday.
The son of Richard and Ellen (Watmough) Halliday, he attended Chimacum and Port Townsend schools before going to work at Crown Zellerbach Co. in Port Townsend at age 18.
From 1951 1953, while on active duty with the Army, he was stationed in Germany, where he served as a corporal.
After this, Mr. Halliday returned to employment with Crown Zellerbach, from which he retired at age 62.
He married Jacquelin Lee Asbell on Nov. 6, 1958, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
In addition to being a member of the American Legion, he enjoyed family get-togethers and spending time fishing and camping.
Mr. Halliday is survived by his wife, daughter Diane Brolliar and son David Halliday, all of Port Townsend, as well as son Mike Kelly of Port Hadlock and stepsons Edwin Smith of Seattle and Danny Rude; brother James Halliday of Port Townsend; and 13 grandchildren. His son Richard L. Halliday died in 1991; grandson K.C. Halliday died in 2000.
Services: Saturday, March 30, visitation from noon in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend, where the funeral will follow at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dan McMillen of San Jaun Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Grove Cemetery.

Paul W. Kilmer
Sept. 10, 1917 -- March 25, 2002
Forks resident Paul W. Kilmer died at age 84.
He was born in Kennewick to John P. and Hattie E. (McKelvey) Kilmer.
He lived most of his life in Forks, Port Angeles and Bellingham, although much of the last five years was spent in Olympia.
Mr. Kilmer was a logger, felling trees on the North Olympic Peninsula.
He enjoyed observing nature and liked spending time with his family or fishing.
Mr. Kilmer was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Forks.
On March 29, 1937, he married Carol L. Pyke. She preceded him in death.
He is survived by sons Robert Kilmer and Kenneth Kilmer, both of Forks, Ronald Kilmer of Blaine and James Kilmer of Spangle; daughter Judith Kittle of Olympia; brothers John Kilmer of Rochester and Gary Kilmer of Forks; sisters Margaret Osborn of Porterville, Calif., Nellie Loven of Tacoma, Pauline Hoptowit of Seattle; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, those preceding Mr. Kilmer in death included brothers Tim and Frank and sister Florence.
Services: Monday, April 1, from noon to 1 p.m., visitation in Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles, immediately preceding the 1 p.m. funeral at which the Rev. Rod Scherencel will officiate. Burial will be in Greenacres Cemetery, Ferndale.
Wendy Quebral
June 5, 1949 -- March 23, 2002
At age 42, Wendy Quebral of Sequim died in Virginia Mason Hospital, Seattle, of pancreatic cancer.
She was born in Cardiff, South Wales, to George and Freda (Bunn) Brelsford and came to the United States from England in 1957.
She graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1967 before going on to train as a stylist and beautician at Mr. Lee's Beauty School in Seattle.
In 1982, she became co-owner, with her mother, of Freda's Quality Draperies in Sequim and was a member of Soroptomist.
Mrs. Quebral greatly enjoyed her daily English tea and was dedicated to her family and assisting others, especially the ill and those in need with children.
In 1978, she married Phillip Sutch in Sequim; they divorced
in 1980.
On Aug. 14, 1991, she married Dan A. Quebral in Port Angeles.
In addition to her husband, Dan, survivors include son Justin George Sutch of Anchorage, Alaska; mother; sister and brother-in-law Pat and Dick Elmer of Port Angeles; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her father.
Services: April 13, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Celebration of Life will be held in Dungeness Meadows Clubhouse. 461 Dungeness Meadows, Sequim. Bleitz Funeral Home, Seattle, was in charge of cremation; cremains will be spread in the Olympic Mountains and on the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Emanuel `Manny' Vasiliou
Oct. 31, 1913 -- March 26, 2002
Korean War veteran Emanuel ``Manny" Vasiliou of Port Townsend died in Harrison Hospital, Bremerton, at age 88, after a four-year struggle with heart disease and a series of strokes.
Mr. Vasiliou was born in Cardiff, Wales, to Costa and Lucy (Dumas) Vasiliou and, as a child, emigrated from Greece to America with his mother and brothers.
Entering the country through Ellis Island and being raised in the Hell's Kitchen part of New York City, he survived robberies, violence connected with the forming of labor unions and a brief stint as a boxer before becoming a chef and, later, a restaurant owner in Seattle.
On April 15, 1944, Mr. Vasiliou married Esther Eleanor Tvedt in Gardinesville, Nev. Together, they raised six children.
The Vasilious, who moved to Port Townsend, in 1989, following retirement, traveled extensively throughout the United States before failing health slowed him.
Mr. Vasiliou lived far beyond the original six months doctors had given him.
In addition to being a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, Mr. Vasiliou was a member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and Elks.
Survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law John and Lisa Vasiliou of Arlington; daughters and sons-in-law Audrey and John Delmore of Port Ludlow, Georgia and Eric Iverson of Port Townsend, Raeann and John Berge of Marysville; daughter Jann Vasiliou and partner Ron VanBuskirk and daughter Stephania Vasiliou of Las Vegas; brother Basil Constant of New York City; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
Services: Saturday, March 30, at 2 p.m., memorial in Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Chimacum, 45 Redeemer Way, Port Hadlock, with Pastor Don Pieper officiating. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.
