Margaret Helen Fischer

May 16, 1901 -- Jan. 13, 2002

Centenarian and former Port Townsend resident Margaret Helen Fischer died in Martha and Mary Health Service in Poulsbo.

She was born to August and Marie (VanWatermeulin) Vanderbeke in Detroit, where she married Lester A. Fischer on May 18, 1927.

Mrs. Fischer made her home in the Detroit area until she moved to Port Townsend in October 1992, after which she lived in Discovery View Apartments until November 1998. She then relocated to Victoria House until Nov. 1, 2001.

She enjoyed playing bridge.

Survivors include son Richard Fischer of Ann Arbor, Mich.; daughters Lois Daley of Brookings, Ore., and Peggy Johnston of Port Ludlow; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, who died June 10, 1962, in Detroit, Mrs. Fischer was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Services: Services and burial will be held later in Detroit. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge.

Clarence P. `Shorty' Kellen

July 6, 1911 -- Jan. 11, 2002

Clarence P. ``Shorty" Kellen died in his Port Angeles home at age 90.

He was born in Minnesota to John and Rose Hellen (Faver) Kellen.

On Sept. 30, 1936, he married Katherine Anna Faber in Sherburn, Minn.

In 1945, he moved to Port Angeles and was a commercial fisherman from 1949 to 1982.

Mr. Kellen's primary hobbies were hunting and fishing and, until his eyes started failing, small-motor repair.

He was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church and Dry Creek Grange.

Survivors include sons Patrick J., Michael C. and Ronald P. Kellen, all of Port Angeles; daughters Kora M. Nelson of Port Angeles and Patricia J. Cooper of Sequim; sister Lucille Schwager of Minnesota; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. His wife died Oct. 8, 1986.

Services: Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 6 p.m., the Rosary will be recited in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles; Thursday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. funeral Mass, also in Queen of Angels Church, celebrated by the Rev. Yu and followed by a reception in the church social hall. Burial will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Dorothy Jensen Larison

July 16, 1908 -- Jan. 12, 2002

Sequim resident Dorothy Jensen Larison died at age 93.

She was born in Logan, Utah, to Joseph W. and Iola (Thompson) Jensen and moved to Roy, Utah, in 1913.

In 1926, she received her degree in education from the University of Utah. Mrs. Larison went on to earn her master's degree from Utah State University in 1942.

On March 9, 1935, she married James M. Larison in Carson City, Nev.

With a lifetime Nevada teacher's certificate, she taught grades 4, 5 and 6 in Davis County, Utah, schools for 12 years before becoming the supervisor of intermediate education for Davis County School District.

She retired in 1971.

Mrs. Larison was a member of the National Education Association, Retired Teacher's Association, National Audubon Society and Aprender Guild.

Her survivors include son and daughter-in-law Jim and Lynda Larison of Sequim; brother Bryce R. Jensen of Roy, Utah; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Larison was preceded in death by her husband on April 7, 1974; daughters Sharon L. Wills of San Diego and JoAnn L. Jay of New Orleans; and grandson Jeffrey Jay of Miami.

Services: At her request, none. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge.

Joy `John' E. Storm

July 23, 1907 -- Jan. 4, 2002

Joy ``John" E. Storm of Sequim died in Port Angeles at age 94.

He was born to Sanford C. and Beryl (McMillan) Storm in Burchard, Neb., and attended the University of Nebraska.

Mr. Storm was a radio and television announcer for NBC and KNBC in Hollywood and Burbank, Calif., and lived in Manhattan Beach, Calif., for many years.

In 1996, he came to Sequim with longtime companion Mildred Gramm.

He was a member of the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists and Screen Actors Guild and had a passionate interest in salmon fishing.

In 1934, he married Clare Siegner in Portland, Ore.; she died in 1986.

Mr. Storm is survived by sons Anthony J. Storm of Sequim and Thomas L. Storm of Torrance, Calif.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services: None. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Charles Wilbur Carrick Sr.

Jan. 14, 1929 -- Jan. 16, 2002

Charles Wilbur Carrick Sr. died in Sequim at age 73.

He was born in Bucyrus, Ohio, to Charles Verne and Carmi Albertie (Diesler) Carrick.

During the Korean War, he was on active duty with the Army between 1951-54, and was discharged with the rate of corporal.

On Aug. 30, 1957, he married Doris Jean ``Feetie" Colosimo in Renton.

Mr. Carrick worked at Boeing Co. for 33 years and made his home on East Hill in Kent for 31 years. Following retirement, he and his wife traveled the world for 10 years, including stops at the Panama Canal and in Australia and New Zealand, before moving to Sequim last year.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Carrick's survivors include son Charles W. Jr. of Utah; daughters Kathleen E. Hernandez and Jessica A. Sumpter, both of Washington; brothers Earl and Al Carrick, both of Ohio; sister Myrtle Elliott of Washington; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services: At his request, none. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Harriet Marie Cruff

Nov. 11, 1945 -- Jan. 12, 2002

Lifelong Port Angeles resident Harriet Marie Cruff died at the age of 56.

Mrs. Cruff was born to Harry Otis and Ella Mae (Hale) Sutton, graduated from high school and, on April 30, 1976, married Ellis Ray Cruff in the Queen of Angels Catholic Church. He died on May 14, 1991, also in Port Angeles.

For about 15 years, from 1983 to 2000, Mrs. Cruff owned and operated a child daycare center.

She enjoyed bowling and was a member of a bowling league some years ago.

Mrs. Cruff was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Survivors include son Jeffrey Cruff of Federal Way; daughter Ellisa Cruff and sister Alice Moore both of Port Angeles.

Services: Friday, Jan. 18, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. visitation at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles, followed by a rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St.; Saturday, Jan. 19, 11:30 a.m. funeral Mass also at Queen of Angels; the Rev. Kurt Nagel officiant. Burial at Mount Angeles Memorial Park.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 861, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Edith Baker Louk

June 2, 1914 -- Jan. 8, 2002

Sequim resident Edith Baker Louk died at age 87.

She was born in Santa Ana, Calif., where she married Loris Louk.

Mrs. Louk earned a bachelor's degree, worked as a school teacher and was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Lynn Louk, who died in 1948, and her husband, who died March 17, 1993.

Services: At a later time, memorial will be officiated by Chaplain Winston DeHaven. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Ashton

March 3, 1923 -- Jan. 16, 2002

Sequim resident Jack Ashton died in Port Angeles at the age of 78.

Mr. Ashton was born in Leyland, England.

He had been a resident of Clallam County for 40 years.

Services: No services planned. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Wayne Engelbert

Jan. 16, 1929 -- Jan. 15, 2002

Wayne Engelbert of Joyce died just one day before his 73rd birthday.

He was born in Taft, Calif., to Frank and Florence (Perryman) Engelbert. He entered the Navy in 1947, and served for four years, then enlisted in the Air Force, retiring in 1970 as a staff sergeant. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Mr. Engelbert moved to Joyce in 1988, from the Central Coast area of California, and he was very active in the Joyce Bible Church. He was a member of Crescent Grange, the Shriners and a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite.

He had volunteered for 38 years with the Boy Scouts of America and recently was awarded the Boy Scout Silver Beaver Award. All three of his sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout under his leadership.

He also volunteered with the Crescent School auto shop, and he enjoyed doing leatherwork and barbecuing for any occasion, including civic, church and family events.

After the death of his first wife, Noreen, Mr. Engelbert married Gretchen Beuttler on Sept. 4, 1995, in Joyce. She survives, along with son Wayne P. Engelbert of San Luis Obispo, Calif., son John J. Engelbert and son and daughter-in-law Frank S. and Bette Engelbert, all of Napa, Calif.; a stepson, Tony Lewis of Sand Point, Idaho; daughter, Elizabeth M. Engelbert of San Luis Obispo; and stepdaughters Michele Pfeffer and Renee McDonald, both of Seattle. He also leaves four grandchildren, Maureen, Joseph, Geoffrey and James Ian, and six step-grandchildren, Thomas, Frances, Alice, Sarah, Baker and Martine.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Hope Hampton.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 19, 11 a.m. funeral at Joyce Bible Church, 50470 Highway 112, Joyce, with the Rev. Mel Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Crescent Beach Cemetery. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge.

Maxine Evelyn Morello

Sept. 23, 1907 -- Jan. 15, 2002

Longtime Port Townsend resident Maxine Evelyn Morello died at the age of 94.

She was born in Getchell to Elda Evelyth and Sarah Mildred (Brost) Lewis and was reared in Sequim. She married Joseph Carl Morello on Sept. 7, 1926, in Port Angeles; he died March 30, 1975.

Between 1926 and 1950, Mrs. Morello lived in Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Seattle. She has lived in the family home in Port Townsend since her husband's retirement in 1950.

She was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening, needlework and painting.

Survivors include a son, James Michael Morello of Bothell; daughters Mary Ernestine Krieger, Josephine Morello and Patricia A. Morello, all of Port Townsend, and Jean Kathleen Helton of Molino, Fla.; 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Morello, and a brother, Ernest Lewis.

Services: Sunday, Jan. 20, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. visitation at Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend, followed by a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. in St. Mary Star of the Sea, 1335 Blaine St., Port Townsend.

Monday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary, with the Rev. David Linehan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall.

Laurel N. Oppelt

Sept. 21, 1922 -- Jan. 15, 2002

Port Angeles resident Laurel N. Oppelt died of natural causes at the age of 79.

Mrs. Oppelt was born in Scotch Grove, Iowa, to Raymond Alfred and Fanny Pearl (Anway) Naylor.

Mrs. Oppelt and her two sons moved to Port Angeles from Olympia in 1955.

She worked for Dr. Kingsley Morrison, the Methodist Church and Dr. Vance Bingham before returning to nursing school in Independence, Mo., in 1967. She received her nursing degree in 1972, and returned to Port Angeles to work at Olympic Memorial Hospital.

In 1976 Mrs. Oppelt traveled to Honduras with a church-sponsored medical-missionary team.

Church activities were very important to her and she served as a priest in her church, Community of Christ.

Mrs. Oppelt was very involved in her community and her special focus was Hospice of Clallam County. She was known as a prolific contributor to the Letters to the Editor section of the Peninsula Daily News.

Upon retirement in 1982 her major focus became caring for her three youngest grandchildren, Angela, Jacob and Lucas Oppelt.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Curt and Lesa Oppelt of Port Angeles and Lane and Carol Oppelt of Olympia; brothers Raymond Naylor of Applegate, Calif., Jack Naylor of Burlington, Iowa, and Jerry Naylor of Scotch Grove, Iowa; sisters Carol Stafford of Bloomington, Utah, Connie Stephens of Victorville, Calif., and Lois Butters of Paradise, Calif.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 19, 2 p.m. memorial at Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles; William Hancock officiant.

Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Douglas L. York Sr. Baublits

Dec. 13, 1951 -- Jan. 14, 2002

Port Angeles native Douglas L. York Sr. Baublits, died following an extended illness. He was 50.

Mr. Baublits was born to Clarence Edward and Karleen Lewise (Kirk) York. He was later adopted by his stepfather, Robert Baublits.

His early years were spent boxing -- one of his most spectacular matches was with ``Sugar Ray Seals" who later became a famous boxer.

After his boxing, he went into the logging industry and later became a professional hair dresser, owning and operating ``Unique Creations by Doug" in Marysville until he became ill in 1997.

Mr. Baublits loved hunting and, most of all, fishing. He also cared for his dog, Squiggles.

He belonged to the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include son Doug York Jr. of Sequim; daughters Gwen Rudzinski and Sara York, both of Port Angeles; stepfather Robert Baublits of Alaska; brother Bobby Baublits of Port Angeles and brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Kerry York of Naselle; sisters and brothers-in-law Mary and Daren Konopaski of Centralia, and Diane and Ed Bell and Chris and Shane Morrison all of Port Angeles; and three grandchildren.

Services: Monday, Jan. 21, 1 p.m. graveside service at Ocean View Cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. The Rev. David Moffitt will officiate. A reception will follow at the Eagles Lodge, 110 S. Penn St., Port Angeles. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
