Leonard D. Oliphant

July 29, 1916 -- Jan. 5, 2002

Leonard D. Oliphant of Sequim died in Port Angeles at the age of 85.

He was born in Doniphan, Neb., to Albert and Katheryn (Flyr) Oliphant.

Services: None, at his request. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge.

ESTHER REBECCA ESTES

June 16, 1908 -- Jan. 5, 2002

Esther R. Estes passed away on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in Marysville, Wash., at the age of 93. She was the beloved wife of Norman, who pre-deceased her in December 1972, and loving mother to Robert of Lake Stevens, Wash., and Janet of Westlake Village, Calif.; mother-in-law to Marta and Michael; grandmother to Brian, Wendy, Robert, and John; and great-grandmother to Olivia, Cedric, Corryn, Madison, and Ethan. She loved her family dearly and celebrated life with them and through them.

She was born Esther Rebecca Carlson on June 16, 1908, in Everett, Wash., to Carl G. and Marie Helmine Carlson. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gubby, Rueben and Joseph Carlson. In 1946, she moved with her husband and children to Port Angeles, Wash., where she maintained a home until 1999.

Her remarkable unfaltering faith, sharpness of mind, sense of humor, and uncompromising dedication to duty blessed those who knew her. She enjoyed participating in the Port Angeles Community Choir, volunteering with the Brownies and Girl Scouts and working in her flowers.

There will be a private graveside service at a later date.

Donations may be made in her memory to the American Lung Association or to Hospice of Snohomish County.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Purdy and Walters at Floral Hills in Lynnwood, Wash.

Evans R. Cook

Feb. 12, 1912 -- Jan. 7, 2002

Evans R. Cook died of cancer at his home in Discovery Bay at the age of 89.

Mr. Evans was born to Seth and Jane (Smith) Cook in Castle Rock, where he graduated from high school.

He worked for Weyerhaueser Co. in the timber industry and then began a lifelong career in the aluminum industry, first with Reynolds Metals Co. in Longview, and last with Kaiser Aluminum in Louisiana, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge for over 60 years.

Mr. Evans was married to Mary Mills for 49 years. She preceded him in death in November 1991.

In 1994 he married LaVelle Majors, who survives him at home. He is also survived by four stepchildren: Earl, Janet, Bill and Carleen, and by several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Besides his first wife, he was also preceded in death by brother Leonard Cook in November 2001.

Services: Friday, Jan. 11, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. visitation at Hubbard Funeral Home, 46 A St., S.W., Castle Rock; followed by 2 p.m. graveside services at Whittle-Hubbard Cemetery in Castle Rock. The Rev. Rick Green will officiate.

Memorials: Jefferson General Hospital, Home Health and Hospice, 935 Sheridan, Port Townsend, WA 98368.

CHARLES W. PICKERING

June 3, 1911 -- Dec. 20, 2001

Charles W. Pickering, entrepre-neur, contractor, and independent investor, passed away on Dec. 20, 2001, in Sequim, Wash.

Mr. Pickering was born June 3, 1911 in St. Louis, Mo. He spent his early years in Dallas and later moved to Los Angeles. He was associated with Hydro Speed Equipment Co., Peralta Electric Co., and Inglewood Printing and Stationary.

Mr. Pickering was also a building contractor in San Marino, Calif. Mr. Pickering moved to Sequim, Wash., in 1980, where he and his wife owned and operated the Dungeness Bay Motel for 10 years.

Mr. Pickering is survived by his loving wife, Doris, and three children, Judy Frewing of La Canada Flintridge, Calif.; Donald Pickering of Bellevue, Wash.; and Charles Pickering Jr. of Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Martin Randolph `Randy' Dawson

March 7, 1914 -- Jan. 8, 2002

At age 87, Martin Randolph ``Randy" Dawson died in Crestwood Convalescent Center, Port Angeles.

He was born in Poulson, Mont., to Martin Luther and Wilmetta (Starrett) Dawson.

His education included study at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington State University and a mortuary school in Southern California.

For many years, Mr. Dawson was a funeral director at National City, Calif., and Kelso, after which he was a partner at Purdy & Dawson Funeral Home, Snohomish.

At retirement, he spent a brief time in his Hood Canal summer home before returning to Snohomish then, in 1995, moving to Parkview Villas, Port Angeles. After becoming ill, he relocated to Crestwood Convalescent Center.

Mr. Dawson belonged to Snohomish Chamber of Commerce, Eagles, Lions, Elks, Senior Kiwanas, Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge. In the early 1960s, he was selected citizen of the year in Snohomish and was active in Snohomish Methodist Church.

Mr. Dawson regularly supported local charities, such as Boy Scouts and Campfire, and enjoyed sports, including playing golf and football.

On July 14, 1935, he married Phyllis H. Rodenberger in Elma; she died Feb. 25, 1999.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Martin Allen and Maureen Dawson of Port Angeles; daughters and sons-in-law Charyl and Bernie Fuller of Suisun City, Calif., and Joan and John Ricketts of Marysville; 10 grandchilren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: Today, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon, visitation in Purdy & Walters with Cassidy, 1702 Pacific Ave., Everett; Saturday, Jan. 12, at 3 p.m., funeral in United Methodist Church, 6202 99th Ave. SE, Snohomish, with Pastor David Byles officiating. Cremation will follow. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, was in charge of local arrangements.

Willie Irvin Gluth

March 7, 1917 -- Jan. 9, 2002

Former Port Angeles resident Willie Irvin Gluth died in Portland, Ore., after a short illness. He was 84.

Born in Olympia to William Henry and Alvina Rose (Thiel) Gluth, he spent his late teens as a cowboy in Oregon and, in 1939, married Ella Mae Wetherald in Portland, Ore.

The Gluths first made their home in Portland, where be became a welding supervisor building warships for Henry Kaiser Shipyards during World War II. In 1945, they moved to Port Angeles, where he spent the next 20 years as a commercial fisherman and worked as a deckhand/engineer for Foss Tug until 1981.

When the Gluths retired to Scott Lake at Olympia, they particularly enjoyed the squirrels and caring for their lawn/garden.

Mr. Gluth is survived by his wife; sons William Irvin Gluth and James Robert Gluth; daughters Claire Murray and Jewel Renee Babcock; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services: To be announced at a later time. Mills and Mills Funeral Directors, Olympia, is in charge of arrangements.

Anne Marie Morgan

Nov. 3, 1927 -- Jan. 8, 2002

Former Port Angeles resident Anne Marie Morgan died in Stanwood at age 74.

She was born San Leandro, Calif., to Joseph and Anna (Estrilla) Williams and, in 1950, married Tom Morgan in Reno, Nev.

From 1978 to 1993, Mrs. Morgan made her home in Port Angeles, where she worked as a teacher's assistant, first at Roosevelt Junior High School then at Monroe Elementary School, from which she retired.

She was a gregarious person who loved to play bingo, loved gardening and served three years as a volunteer with Senior Information and Assistance.

Her 33-year marriage ended in 1983.

Survivors include sons William Thomas ``Tommy" Morgan of Tacoma, Daniel James ``Danny" Morgan of Oak Harbor and Michael Terrance ``Mike" Morgan of Mount Vernon; daughter Judith Anne Williams of Stanwood; sisters Emily Foust of San Leandro, Calif., and Isabella Prudencio of Salt Lake City; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brother Joseph Williams.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m., funeral in the chapel of Gilbertson Funeral Home, 27001 88th Ave. NW, Stanwood. Interment will be in Anderson Cemetery, Stanwood.

Marge E. Timmerman

Dec. 15, 1911 -- Jan. 9, 2002

Marge E. Timmerman died in Nordland at age 90.

She was born in Los Gatos, Calif., to Melvin and Flora Lee (Utt) Vannatta then raised on Indian Island in Jefferson County.

When the Navy purchased Indian Island, she moved to Marrowstone and worked as a nurse in St. John's Hospital at Port Townsend. After this, she was senior nutrition manager at Lower Hadlock and, later, at the Tri-Area Center in Chimacum.

Mrs. Timmerman liked to make wedding and birthday cakes as well as to knit, crochet and travel.

She belonged to First United Methodist Church in Port Hadlock and Eastern Star and was a life member of both Amaranth and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.

Widowed in each of her marriages which were, first on Sept. 16, 1932, to Arthur Nelson, then to Ivan Latta and Louie Timmerman, she is survived by daughter Lucille Lightbourne; brothers Alvin Johnson and Nels Johnson; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by sister Lucille Stienbrook.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 12, at 3 p.m., graveside service in Soundview Cemetery on Marrowstone Island. Pastor Mark Williams of Community United Methodist Church will officiate. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements. There will be a reception at a later time.

Twila Virginia Carter

Nov. 17, 1924 -- Jan. 8, 2002

Port Townsend resident Twila Virginia Carter died in her family home of natural causes at the age of 77.

Mrs. Carter was born in Elkins, W.Va., to Moody Sewell and Laura Mae (Poe) Channell.

On May 14, 1956, she married Earl Robert Carter in Clallam County. He died on Sept. 22, 1996.

Mr. and Mrs. Carter moved from Mechanicsburg, Pa., to Port Townsend on his retirement from the Navy 35 years ago.

Mrs. Carter's interests included animals. She loved her animal companions.

Survivors include sons Robert Lee Carter of Bellingham and Richard Lee Caricote of Salina, Kan., daughter Judith Elaine Laurent of Port Townsend, granddaughter Patricia Juarez, and great-grandson Donald E. Green.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by sister Mary Lou Robinson.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 19, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Roadhouse Cafe, 2152 Sims Way West, Port Townsend. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Animal Shelter, 112 Critter Lane, Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Kathleen Cuykendall Deits

Dec. 16, 1948 -- Jan. 9, 2002

Kathleen Cuykendall Deits of Bellevue died at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland after a long illness due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was 53.

Mrs. Deits was born to Ralph Dale and Breta Doris Cuykendall in Port Townsend where she graduated from High School in 1967. She married David H. Deits on Oct. 4, 1969,.

She earned her associate of arts degree from Grays Harbor College in 1972, with membership in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She also studied at Chemeketa Community College and Western Oregon University in Oregon.

Mrs. Deits worked at Smyth Van Line in Bellevue before becoming a parent.

She enjoyed reading, travel, contact with her friends and being a mother.

Survivors include husband and son Chris Deits of Bellevue; and sister Karen Jovag of Port Ludlow.

Services: Wednesday, Jan. 16, 10 a.m. to noon visitation at Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend, followed by 1 p.m. graveside service at Laurel Grove Cemetery on Discovery Road in Port Townsend, and a reception at Port Ludlow Beach Club, 121 Marina Drive, Port Ludlow.

Memorials: Evergreen Hospice Foundation, 12822 124th Lane NE, Kirkland, WA 98034.

Bobbie Brown

Jan. 10, 1939 -- Jan. 11, 2002

Bobbie Brown died of cancer in Port Angeles. She was 63.

Born in Oregon City, Ore., to Charles Henry and Willetta Zeltha (Marshall) Weldon, she grew up in Molalla, Ore., before moving to Albany, Ore., in 1953.

She attended accounting school in Texas, then returned to Albany where she married Earl Brown on Nov. 6, 1960.

The Browns moved to Alton, Ill., in 1983. They moved to Port Angeles in January 1990.

Flowers and gardening were among Mrs. Brown's special interests, which motivated her to attend floral design school. She owned and operated Bobbie's Flower Basket in Port Angeles from 1993 until last month.

She was member of Beta Sigma Phi and the First Church of God in Sequim.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Brown's survivors include son J. Alan Brown of Springfield, Ore.; daughter JoAnne Molinari of Tacoma; grandchildren Victoria, Lindsey, Nicholas and Holly; and her parents, who live in Salem, Ore.

She was preceded in death by brother Lyle Weldon.

Services: Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m., funeral in First Church of God, 503 N. Brown Road, Sequim, with the Revs. Dennis Ackley and Chuck Milliman officiating. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Evans R. Cook

Feb. 12, 1912 -- Jan. 7, 2002

Evans R. Cook of Port Townsend died of cancer in his Discovery Bay home. He was 89.

Mr. Cook was born in Castle Rock to Seth C. and Jane (Smith) Cook and graduated from Castle Rock High School.

After starting employment in the timber industry with Weyerhaeuser, he moved to a career in the aluminum industry, first with Reynolds in Longview, then with Kaiser in Louisiana, where he retired as plant manager in 1977.

Mr. Cook was a 60-year member of the Eagles.

In 1942, he married Mary Mills, who died in November 1991. On Sept. 3, 1994, he married LaVelle (Majors) Dukes in Reno, Nev.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Cook's survivors include stepsons Earl Fowlkes of Mount Holly, N.C., and Bill Magart of White Hall, Mont.; stepdaughters Janet Goldbecker of Tacoma and Carleen Garret of Gig Harbor; and numerous grandchildren. His brother, Leonard Cook, died in November 2001.

Services: Graveside service was Jan. 11, with the Rev. Rick Green officiating in Whittle-Hubbard Cemetery, Castle Rock, where Hubbard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Jefferson General Hospital, Home Health and Hospice, 935 Sheridan St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.
