Betty Mae Ozmun

May 8, 1921 -- Dec. 28, 2001

Port Townsend resident Betty Mae Ozmun died at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton at the age of 80.

She was born to John and Edna I. (Sorgatz) Krozser in Cleveland, where she was raised and on Jan. 18, 1947, married William R. Ozmun.

In 1952, she moved to San Diego and in 1958, went to work part time for Security Bank, later Bank of America, and retired in 1983 as assistant manager/loan officer.

In 1990, she moved to Kitsap County and in 1992 to Port Townsend.

Mrs. Ozmun enjoyed quilting and reading. She belonged to the Cabin Fever Quilters of Chimacum.

Survivors include daughter Nancy J. Hafner of Port Townsend and grandson Richard Penuelas Jr.

Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1988.

Services: At her request, none. Her cremains will be inurned with her husband's in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at San Diego.

Memorials: Habitat for Humanity, 385 Benedict St., Port Townsend, WA 98368; or veterans organization of choice.

Doris P. Pearman

July 16, 1917 -- Dec. 21, 2001

Port Angeles resident Doris P. Pearman died at the age of 84.

Mrs. Pearman was born to Fred Earl and Adith Ellen (Bridge) Geer in Seattle, where she married Jonny Arnold.

She was a sales clerk at Bon Marché.

Her sons Leon and Richard Arnold preceded her in death.

Services: No services. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Elizabeth `Libby' Leichliter Yommer

March 25, 1912 -- Jan. 1, 2002

Retired educator Alice Elizabeth ``Libby" Leichliter Yommer died in Sequim at the age of 89.

Mrs. Yommer was born in Youngwood, Pa., to Harry and Mary Rosella Clementina (Demoise) Leichliter.

Her father died in a railroad accident when she was age 2; after her mother's remarriage in 1920, she was also raised by David Jacob Coughenour.

As a youth, she was a baptized and confirmed member of United Brethren in Christ Church and, in 1929, graduated from Youngwood High School.

She attended Indiana Normal School in Indiana, Pa., where she finished a two-year course for teaching English and later returned to the school, now renamed Indiana State Teachers College, graduating in 1932 with a four-year degree.

She taught at Youngwood Elementary School until World War II. During World War II, she held a position in the elementary school system of Euclid, Ohio.

While working in Cumberland, Md., she met Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. employee Walter George Yommer. Later, they were co-workers at U.S. Steel Cuyahoga Works. After a lengthy courtship, they married on May 27, 1950, in Kirkland, Ohio.

She earned a master of education degree at Western Reserve University and was a member of the honorary education sorority Kappa Gamma Phi.

Mrs. Yommer continued to hold a position in the elementary school system of Euclid, Ohio, where she taught until retirement at Upson School. Throughout her career, the excellence of her performance was recignized with various honors.

The Yommers moved to Sequim in 1974.

Mrs. Yommer was active in Grange and was bookkeeper for her husband's land development investments. She enjoyed gardening and playing bridge.

Mrs. Yommer is survived by her husband, who celebrated his 99th birthday on Dec. 16, and brothers David Coughenour of Florida, Donald Coughenour of Midland, Texas, and Robert Coughenour of Newport Richey, Florida.

Services: No services are planned at this time. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge.

Memorials: Charity of choice.

Lawrence Alan `Larry' Konopaski

May 30, 1940 -- Jan. 1, 2002

Clallam County resident Lawrence Alan ``Larry" Konopaski died of cancer at age 61.

He was born to August Raleigh and Joy Carolyn (Robb) Konopaski in Port Angeles, where he attended Queen of Angels Elementary School before graduating from St. Martin's High School at Olympia in 1958.

On Feb. 17, 1959, he and his twin brother, Terry, enlisted in the Air Force and spent time in Texas, New Mexico and Montana before their active duty ended on Dec. 3, 1962.

Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Konopaski also made his home in Sekiu and Clallam Bay on the West End of the North Olympic Peninsula and worked in different areas of Clallam County. His ventures included owning a gas station and operating heavy equipment, often accompanied by his beloved dog Snuggles, who also wore a bright orange worker's vest. The last few years, Mr. Konopaski drove truck in other parts of the state.

He loved flying and had a passion for building airplanes, which started when he was a young child making models and continued to his being in the process of building a 2/3-scale P-51 Mustang.

He was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Port Angeles.

Survivors include sons Jeffrey and Larry Jr., both of Pennsylvania, and Brett of Port Angeles; daughters Gina Konopaski of Florida and Deborah Schussler of Pennsylvania; brothers Reggie of Albany, Ore., and Kim and Terry, as well as sister Sheri Bedford, all of Port Angeles; and eight grandchildren.

Services: Sunday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m., rosary in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles. Monday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m., memorial Mass, also in Queen of Angels, with the Rev. Kurt Nagel celebrating; inurnment in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles; then a reception in O'Donnell Hall, next to the church. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

OPAL S. MCLAUGHLIN-RALSTON

Dec. 4, 1908 -- Dec. 7, 2001

At age 93, Opal S. McLaughlin-Ralston died at Crestwood Convalescent Center in Port Angeles.

She was born in Maxwelton on Whidbey Island to Adelbert Eager and Hazel Mildred (DeWitt) Smith.

On Jan. 27, 1929, she married Lionel J. McLaughlin; he died Jan. 30, 1967.

She became the wife of Graham W. Ralston on July 7, 1979 in Port Angeles; he died in May 1995.

In addition to being co-owner of Mac's Laundromat and Washington Apartments, she was owner of Carroll Realty until retirement.

Mrs. McLaughlin-Ralston was the second woman to be named as a Washington state Real Estate Commissioner and, in 1969, was named Woman of the Year for the state of Washington by the National Association of Real Estate Brokers.

A lifetime member of Soroptimist, she served as president in 1960-61 and was honored as a Soroptimist Woman of Distinction in 1989; served two four-year terms on the Governor's Council on Aging; and was grand marshal of Derby Days.

Mrs. McLaughlin-Ralston belonged to First Baptist Church, Eastern Star, the Historical Society of Clallam County, Variety Club and the Gerald M. Lauridsen Foundation.

Survivors include daughter-in-law Doris McLaughlin of Bullhead City, Ariz.; a sister, Dorothy Smith of Port Angeles; and grandchildren Pamela Morrison of Olympia and Jerry McLaughlin of Wilbur; four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers Carroll, Keith and Gerald Smith and by a son, L. Rodney McLaughlin, who died in January 1996.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1:30 p.m., memorial in First Baptist Church, 106 W. Sixth St., Port Angeles, with the Rev. George Boudet officiating. A reception will follow. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Clallam County Historical Society, 926 W. Eighth St., Port Angeles, WA.

Helen Crampton

June 12, 1928 -- Jan. 4, 2002

Port Angeles resident Helen Crampton died of a stroke at Olympic Medical Center, at the age of 73.

Mrs. Crampton was born in Pomona, Calif., to Rex Carlton and Grace Evelyn (Secord) Keller.

She attended Riverside College and University of Southern California.

On Oct. 8, 1949, she married Charles Crampton in Redlands, Calif.

Mrs. Crampton was a housewife and resided in Maryland, London, England, Virginia and Garden Grove, Calif., during her husband's military enlistment. Later she resided in Lancaster, Calif., and Port Angeles.

She belonged to the Church of Christ.

Mrs. Crampton enjoyed mysteries and corresponding with friends, meeting people and seeing new places. She traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States and particularly appreciated the climate and scenery of the Northwest and liked to visit Canada often.

Mrs. Crampton is remembered by her family for her love of life, of her family and for her sense of humor. Mr. Crampton considered her his best friend.

Survivors include husband of Port Angeles; son Dana Crampton of Santa Barbara, Calif.; daughter Michele Dilbeck of Grapevine, Texas; brother Norman Keller of Ventura, Calif.; granddaughters Felicity Crampton of Studio City, Calif., and Victoria Dilbeck of Grapevine, Texas.

She was preceded in death by son Sean Crampton and brother Ernest Keller.

Services: Wednesday, Jan. 9, 6 p.m. in the Church of Christ, 1233 E. Front St., Port Angeles. A reception will follow. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Walter Bert Anderson

Aug. 25, 1911 -- Jan. 2, 2002

Walter Bert Anderson died of a heart attack at his home in Joyce at the age of 90.

He was born in Saguache, Colo., to Swan and Ida (Berg) Anderson and moved to Joyce with his family at the age of 8.

He attended the old Ramapo school in Joyce and graduated from Crescent High School in 1931.

Mr. Anderson was a resident of Joyce all his life, except for five years spent working in the Alaska woods and two years in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked as a logger on the North Olympic Peninsula, for the Washington State Highway Department for 18 years, and on a family farm in Joyce until recently raising Black Angus cattle.

In 1958, he married Mary Jacqueline Williams in Port Angeles.

Mr. Anderson was a member of several unions, most recently the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. He was also a member of Queen of Angels Church.

Survivors include his wife Mary in Joyce; sons Stuart Anderson of Seattle, Steven Anderson of Bremerton and John Anderson of Eindhoven, The Netherlands; sisters Myrtle Hedin of Kent and Florence Anderson of Seattle; a brother, Ray Anderson of Joyce; and one granddaughter, Anika, in The Netherlands. He was preceded in death by a brother, Art Anderson.

Services: Wednesday, Jan. 9, 10 a.m., memorial Mass, Queen of Angels Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles, followed by a reception in the parish social hall. The Rev. Kurt Nagel will officiate. Burial will be in Crescent Cemetery, Joyce. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge.

Marilyn Kay Hicks

Nov. 10, 1942 -- Jan. 5, 2002

Cancer took the life of Marilyn Kay Hicks of Port Angeles at the age of 59.

She was born in Toppenish to Harold and Fern Lucille (Ferris) Austin. She married Bob R. Hicks on May 2, 1964, in Seattle.

Mrs. Hicks was the owner and operator of Evergreen Tax Inc. for the past 30 years. She also was a gourmet cook and enjoyed gardening.

She was a member of the Eagles and Moose lodges, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Turzah Club, Daughters of the Nile.

Survivors include her husband, Bob, in Port Angeles; a son, Todd Hicks of Portland, Ore.; brothers Harold Austin of Selah and Michael Austin of Brussels, Belgium; and sisters Janice Schuellar of Yakima, Phyllis Stencil of Mossyrock and Brenda Dryer of Goldendale. She was preceded in death by a sister, Roseanne Boardman.

Services: A private service will be scheduled at a later date. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge.

Zada Alene Bowlby

Dec. 24, 1924 -- Dec. 23, 2001

Longtime Port Angeles resident Zada Alene Bowlby died one day before her 77th birthday.

Mrs. Bowlby was born in Ashland, Okla., and moved to Port Angeles 42 years ago.

Burial was at Mount Angeles Memorial Park Cemetery.

Esther Rebecca Estes

June 16, 1908 -- Jan. 5, 2002

Former Port Angeles resident Esther Rebecca Estes died in Marysville at the age of 93.

Mrs. Estes was born in Everett to Carl G. and Marie Helmine Carlson.

She married Norman Estes on June 9, 1934, in Everett. He preceded her in death in December 1972.

In 1946, she moved with her husband and children to Port Angeles, where she maintained a home until 1999.

Mrs. Estes is remembered for her sharp mind, sense of humor and dedication to duty.

She was a member of the Port Angeles Community Choir, volunteered with the Brownies and Girl Scouts, and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Robert and Marta Estes of Lake Stevens; daughter and son-in-law Janet and Michael Douglas of Westlake Village, Calif.; grandchildren Brian Estes, Wendy Keneipp and Robert and John Douglas; and great-grandchildren Olivia, Cedric, Corryn, Madison and Ethan.

Services: Private graveside service at a later date. Purdy and Walters at Floral Hills in Lynnwood is in charge of arrangements.

Ida Mae Jabs

June 14, 1939 -- Jan. 5, 2002

Port Angeles resident Ida Mae Jabs died at Olympic Medical Center at the age of 62.

Mrs. Jabs was born to Carl Hugo and Dorothy (Hinze-Bruns) Bischoff in Perham, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1957.

She grew up in Vergas, Minn., and lived and worked in the Perham area until 1976, when she relocated to Port Angeles.

She married Elmer Eric Jabs on June 23, 1957, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Vergas.

Mrs. Jabs enjoyed needlework and flowers.

Survivors include husband and daughter Karla Chamberlin, both of Port Angeles; brothers Kurt Bischoff of Texas and Ernest Bischoff of Minnesota; sister Judy of North Dakota; and granddaughters Jodi and Jena Chamberlin.

She was preceded in death by son Rick Jabs and by a baby brother.

Services: Friday, Jan. 11, 1 p.m. funeral at Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Pastor Philip Ritter of St. Matthew Lutheran Church will officiate. A potluck will be held after the service at 4005 S. Tiller Road, Port Angeles. Burial at Ocean View Cemetery.
