Nikki Fink
March 14, 1982 - October 17, 2010
Nikki Fink, 28, of Friday Harbor, WA, died of Cystic Fibrosis at University of Washington Medical Center after an extended stay while awaiting a lung transplant.
Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary disease affecting multiple systems of the body, primarily the respiratory and digestive systems. She was born in Lansing, Michigan, living there surrounded by her father's extended family for her first few years, then moved with her parents to El Paso, Texas living with her mother's extended family until she was seven-years old when she and her family moved to San Juan Island and has lived in the Puget Sound area ever since.
Nikki lived her life joyfully. Her health care needs were considerable, but she took care of them with such diligence and grace it was easy for those around her to be unaware of the magnitude of the burden that it imposed on her life.
Unlike most children, Nikki was in no hurry to grow up. She always said that life went too fast and she wanted more time to enjoy being a kid. Throughout her life she remained a kid at heart with maturity beyond her years. She filled her life with music and sang beautifully. During high school, she was second alternate in the statewide singing competition for two years in a row and was active in other high school performances and community events.
She sang with the San Juan Singers, was awarded a singing scholarship to Western Washington University, and sang in Cystic Fibrosis fundraisers. She was artistic and loved scrapbooking, arts and crafts. She was an avid reader and loved scary movies. When she was well enough, she snowboarded.
During her last stay in the hospital she was learning to knit. Nikki joked that she must be solar powered because she loved the sun so much and spent many long days at the beach playing and collecting beach glass with her son Xander and sweetheart Adam. Her son, extended family and friends were the heart of her life.
Nikki is survived by many loved family members in Washington, Michigan and Texas including: her grandparents, Hortencia Lopez, Jody Jones, Raymond Fink, and Marian Bowman; her mom and stepfather, Yvonne and Gary Bowman; her dad and stepmother, Eric Fink and Lesa Johnson and stepbrother, Nick Johnson; her sister, dearest friend and confidant, Loni Fink and her fiance Darren Jameson; her sweetheart and best friend, Adam D'Errico; and her beloved son, Xander Combs.
We will always remember Nikki's quick laughter, terrific funny faces and sense of humor, her love of music and wicked toe wrestling.
Recently Nikki wrote, "I really know just how much each small moment is worth and I treasure everyone."
We who shared life with Nikki, who loved her and were loved by her in turn, bear witness to her remarkable life. Our lives have been changed; made sweeter and richer by her presence.
In lieu of flowers please consider a tax-deductible donation to Nikki's Medical Fund, New Horizons Foundation 4570 Hilton Parkway, Suite 203 Colorado Springs, CO 80907, note on the memo line: Nikki Fink Medical Fund.

Their collection of Native American art includes ceremonial masks, boxes, tools, and prints by artists that the Herndon family are proud to count as friends.
From 2007 until the month before his last illness, Dr. Herndon maintained a busy schedule and vigorous practice in Seattle Children’s clinics throughout Central Washington.
Dr. Herndon was a loving, devoted husband, a dear and honored father, a jovial grandfather, and a warm, respected friend. James Russell Corrie
July 17, 1926 ~ February 21st 2011
Jim was born July 17, 1926 to Vivian (“Jack”) and Louise Corrie in Tacoma, Washington and passed quietly away February 21st 2011 in Friday Harbor after a brief illness. Jim was raised in Pacific Northwest lighthouses where he learned his love of the sea. His parents moved to Dungeness Light when he was 18 months old. He, along with his brother and two sisters moved to Mukilteo Light, back to Dungeness for a time, and then to Marrowstone Island, during the war. Jim entered the Navy in 1944 at the age of 17, and served as quartermaster aboard the troop ship USS General R.M. Blatchford. One of his assignments brought him to Nagasaki immediately after the atomic bomb was dropped on that city.
Upon leaving the Navy in 1946 he went commercial fishing and worked for Black Ball Line, which soon became Washington State Ferries. He served 38 years, most of that time as Captain on the San Juan Island run where he retired as the highly respected senior Master of the ferry system. In the early 1950’s he competed in limited hydroplane racing, medaling in the national championship in Florida in 1952. He married Maya Jean Edgerton in 1955, moving to Friday Harbor in 1957 where his three children were born into the Island life. The family are avid boaters and many of their friends remember all the great trips aboard the Pacific Sunrise, a converted herring seiner with lots of room for guests, fun and laughs. He and Maya are still fondly called Mom & Pops by all the ‘kids’ who were part of the crew.
Jim was a Mr. Fix-it in his hobby shop and his generous nature was known throughout the communities. You name it - he fixed it, or made a replacement part. His beautiful custom-made ship steering wheels are on yachts throughout the world. The Port of Seattle presented two of his crafted wheels to it’s sister city, Kobe, Japan. Locally, his backhoe, log splitter and tractor were fixtures in the neighborhood and he took great joy in sharing his “homegrown” applesauce, cider and corn.
Jim is survived by his wife Maya, sister Lou and husband Milton Johnson, son David and wife Marianne, daughters Marilyn Corrie and Susan Smith . Granddaughters Corrie and Lacey Smith, grandsons Riley and Tanner Corrie, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim loved all animals, and never met a dog who didn’t love his pocket full of biscuits. In lieu of flowers his wishes were for donations to the Friday Harbor Animal Protection Society, PO Box 1355, Friday Harbor, WA 98250.
He will be missed by his friends, neighbors and all who loved him. A private graveside service is planned at San Juan Valley Cemetery, with a Celebration of his Life event to be held later this Spring.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands. To share memories of Jim, please sign the online guest register at https://www.evanschapel.com/index.cfm

Roy Vincent Franklin
May 1, 1924 ~ February 3, 2011
Roy Vincent Franklin passed away at his home in Friday Harbor February 3, 2011 at the age of 86. The second of four children born to Roy (Sr.) and Alice Franklin, Roy was born on the family farm in Ferndale Washington May 1, 1924. Roy grew up in an era of difficult times, hard work, few amenities and fierce independence. It would shape the character of his life. The beginning of WWII found Roy a High School junior determined to join the Army. His father, a WW1 veteran refused to sign a permission slip required for those less than 18 years old. This was a bitter pill for Roy and there were hard feelings, however, his Father’s action set Roy on a new course that would define his life’s work. Fascinated with airplanes, Roy took advantage of the time until graduation from High School to gain acceptance into the Naval Flight program.
Flight school was no picnic. In the last stages of the war effort, upwards of 80% of flight Cadets were being washed out. Roy excelled and out of roughly 200 pilots in his squadron only 6 were given fighter slots. As a carrier pilot, Roy flew Wild Cats, Hell Cats, Corsairs and Bear Cats. The fastest fighters of the day; He was the cream of the crop.
While on leave Roy met a beautiful young girl named Margaret Ann Skinner and they were soon married. After the war, Roy accepted a job flying for a small start up air taxi in the San Juan Islands. That little air taxi, operating out of a cow pasture, had just one airplane and one pilot (Roy). In 1948, 23 old Roy, his 19 year old bride Margaret Ann and their one year old son moved to the islands.
The history of Roy and Margaret’s life of over 30 years building a reliable and safe air transportation service within the San Juan’s has been well chronicled in various articles, the book “Commuter Airlines of the United States” Smithsonian and a book Roy published in 2006 “Island Bush Pilot”. In 2000 Roy was inducted into the Washington Aviation Hall of Fame. As quoted in Commuter Airlines of the United States, Smithsonian Institution Press. “Roy Franklin has captured the spirit of the true pioneer and epitomized the attitudes of those commuter airline promoters whose instincts were true and whose convictions were strong as they created the nucleus of this definitive segment of the U.S. air transport industry. Franklin’s words are an inspired tribute to a special breed of aviator.”
Roy had a variety of interests. He was an avid scuba diver, hunter and photographer. Roy took hundreds of stills and thousands of feet of motion picture film. Much of this film was taken in the Cascade and Olympic mountains during his 25 years of dropping supplies for the Forest Service during the summer fire seasons.
After Roy and Margaret retired they purchased a motor home and spent much of the winters traveling the country and visiting old friends and relatives. On December 7, 2001 Margaret Ann passed away. Roy dedicated his book “Island Bush Pilot to her, “To my wife Margaret Ann. You have been gone 4 years, my love. 56 years together, 5 children, 9 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a commuter airline. I will love you forever.”
Four years ago Roy ran into an old friend name Jean Kiel. Jean and her family had lived next door to the Franklin farm in Ferndale so Jean and Roy had literally grownup together. Jean had lost her husband a number of years previous thus a renewed friendship was born.
Roy is survived by Steve Franklin (Holly); children Marc, Jamin, Aleesha; Susan Jarman (Bob); children Joan, Matt, Sarah, Katie; Janet Franklin; Nancy Franklin; children Ashia, Matias; Ken Franklin (Suzanne); children Cole, Rhiana; and six great grandchildren.
Dad will always be remembered as a true American Patriot, an amazing pilot, fearless and highly skilled. Roy was our Hero, a natural leader and a man that had a limitless capacity for giving.
Memorial services will be held for Roy Franklin at 1:30pm Saturday February 26, 2011 at the Friday Harbor Airport in the “Island Air” hanger (airport circle drive). The family welcomes all who wish to share in the celebration of Roy’s life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
