Gretta “Jean” Assink
Gretta “Jean” Assink, age 84, entered the presence of the Lord on Feb. 28, 2009, finishing her battle with cancer.
She had been a resident of Lynden Manor for three years. Jean was born on Sept. 4, 1924, to Clara (Johnson) and Casper Anderson in Oregon. She married Raymond Lawrence Mullenix in May 1941. During Ray’s Army career, they lived in a number of locations including Washington, Wyoming, Colorado and Georgia. When he retired in 1950, they settled in Bellingham, where they lived until his death in 1963.
Caroline (Carol) Frances Blake Bostrom
Caroline (Carol) Frances Blake Bostrom, 84, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham.
Mrs. Bostrom was born Oct. 9, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, the youngest of four daughters.
She graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. While in college during World War II, she served in the Women’s Land Army, working in agriculture.
Mr. Jake S. Starkenburg
Mr. Jake S. Starkenburg, of Lynden, was taken to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at a Bellingham care facility. He was 88 years old.
Born in Lynden on May 16, 1920, he was a son of Sherman and Gertie (VanWeerdhuizen) Starkenburg. He attended Ebenezer Christian School and was married to Dorothy Sebens in Sumas on Nov. 20, 1939. Together they raised their family and operated a dairy farm on H Street Road, retiring in 1980. Jake was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church in Lynden and loved to build wheelbarrows from scraps of wood for his grandchildren and others in the community.
Thelma Fredlund
A gifted and accomplished pianist and organist, Thelma Marie Shorkley Fredlund was immersed in music her entire life. She was generous with her talent, sharing her abilities as director of music for several local churches and synagogues, as well as giving piano instruction to countless and appreciative young people and adults.
Mother was born in Camden, Maine, on April 13, 1910, to Grace Tiffany Shorkley and Dr. George Shorkley. In 1913, the family moved from Maine to Mount Vernon, Wash., where her father practiced medicine for many years. Her aptitude for music -- the piano and later on, the pipe organ -- was recognized and nurtured at an early age there. Mother attended Mount Vernon schools, Mills College in California and Bellingham Normal School (now WWU), earning a bachelor of arts degree in education. Hired by Burlington schools, she taught music until 1936, retiring from classroom work to marry Kenneth I. Fredlund of Mount Vernon. Mother and Dad had known each other from early childhood, since the Shorkley and Fredlund families were friends for over 40 years. On June 19, 2007, Mother and Dad celebrated 71 years of marriage.
Diane Carder
Diane Carder, age 61, of Bellingham, passed away at her home on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009.
Diane loved nature and music. She sang in the Handel’s "Messiah" and the Kulshan Chorus. Her kind and loving spirit will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Christ The Servant Lutheran Church, 2600 Lakeway Dr., Bellingham.
Steven Hall
Steven Hunter Hall, 54, of Bellingham, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2009. He was a good person and will be greatly missed.

Ian Allen McAlpine, of Bellingham, passed away on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009. He was 26 years old.

John R. “Dunki” Dunki-Jacobs
John R. “Dunki” Dunki-Jacobs peacefully entered the Kingdom of the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at 9:17 a.m. at his home in Lynden, surrounded by his family, relatives and close friends, after post-operative complications from aortic valve replacement surgery.
Leroy (Andy) Edward Anderson
Leroy (Andy) Edward Anderson left to be with our Heavenly Father on Feb. 17, 2009, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on Nov. 6, 1931, to Harley and Selma Anderson in Niobrara, Neb.
Dad loved the outdoors, especially working on property raising cattle or just puttering (or “dorking off” in Dad’s words). He also loved family barbecues, camping, hunting, fishing trips and going to the rodeos. Mom always said “Dad was her Cowboy,” and he truly was. Dad loved sports, but especially watching boxing. When he was younger, he was a Golden Glove boxer. He retired from ARCO in 1985 after 37 years.
Wallace R. “Wally” McClellan
Wallace R. “Wally” McClellan, age 84, of Bellingham, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, in Bellingham with his family by his side.
He was born on April 9, 1924, in Bellingham to Reed N. and Edith M. (Kelm) McClellan. Wally served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a life member of the William Matthew Post #1585, V.F.W. and member of the Albert J. Hamilton Post #7, American Legion, both of Bellingham. Wally retired in 1986 from the Whatcom County Road Department after 22 years of employment.
Bernice E. Huisman
Bernice E. Huisman, age 87, of Lynden, went to be with her loving Heavenly Father on Sunday, April 12, 2009.
Born in Milaca, Minn., on Jan. 3, 1922, Bernice was a daughter of Clifford and Agnes Love. In 1938, she moved to Lynden and graduated from Lynden High School in 1940. In June of that year, she married Jack Huisman and together they raised seven children; he preceded her in death in 1992.
Carmi H. King
Carmi H. King, age 83, of Lynden, went home to his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 8, 2009.
A lifelong Whatcom County resident, he was born on June 22, 1925, to Dean K. and Marie C. (Gerjets) King and graduated from Lynden High School in 1942. Carmi served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. On July 20, 1946, he married Jeannine Ogard at Laurel Baptist Church and enjoyed a lifelong career in wholesale electrical and plumbing sales. A man of faith, he attended Grace Baptist Fellowship for many years. He delighted in spending time with his family. Gifted with his hands, Carmi’s hobby was woodworking, crafting many treasured wood items for family and friends.
A. Brad Peterson
A. Brad Peterson, beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend, died peacefully at home on Monday, April 6, 2009, after a heroic two-year fight with leukemia. He was 55.
A highly respected physical therapist, Brad owned and operated Ferndale Physical Therapy for 19 years. He was a natural teacher who never lost his love of learning. Brad was an accomplished pilot, woodworker, boater and master gardener and he appreciated all things made of stone.
Douglas Stuart Bentley
Douglas Stuart Bentley, of Deming, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the age of 80.
His friends and family will attest to the fact that he was lots of fun, had a way with words and loved a good story!
Doug graduated from Mount Baker High School in 1946, joined the Marines, married Louise in 1949, worked for the PAF in Alaska and owned and operated the Standard Oil wholesale distributorship in Deming. He also was a Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts leader, and brought Little League to Deming.
Jeanette Van Leeuwen
Jeanette Van Leeuwen, age 96, of Lynden, was taken to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, April 7, 2009.
A daughter of Jacob and Susan (Reimersma) Adema, Jeanette was born in Carnes, Iowa, and later moved with her family to Lynden and graduated from Lynden High School in 1930.
John Moorlag
John Moorlag, of Lynden, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2009. He was 85 years old.
A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at 3 p.m. at First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden.

Reynold Ross
Reynold D. Ross, of Everson, was taken to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, April 13. He was 90.
A son of Val and Elsie (Sutton) Ross, he was born in Alton, Iowa, on Feb. 4, 1919, and married Eloyse Grossman in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1941. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy and was a radioman on an SBD2C dive-bomber aboard the USS Lexington in the Pacific; hewas discharged in 1945. He and Eloyse later moved to Snohomish County, where he worked as a quality control inspector at Evergreen Industries for 37 years. They moved to Everson in 1989.
Michael Tabak
Michael Karl Tabak, of Blaine, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. He was 55 years old.

Sen V. Tran, age 92, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2009, at his home in Ferndale. He will be greatly missed.

Julian G. Silva
Julian G. Silva, loving husband, father and adored grandfather, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham. He was 78 years old.
Julian was born on Feb. 16, 1931, in Santa Maria, Texas, and was best known everywhere as “the kind man with the cowboy hat.” He married Maria on Aug. 28, 1958, in Brownsville, Texas. His true joy was spending time with his wife and family. He enjoyed gathering for big events and always looked forward to the weekly family Sunday (lunch) social.
Raylene M. Timmer
Raylene M. Timmer, age 58, of Lynden, was taken to be with her Heavenly Father at her home on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, following a 10-year battle with cancer.
A daughter of Gilbert and Agnes (Vos) Willemsen, Raylene was born in Artesia, Calif., on May 7, 1951, and moved with her family to the Everson area in 1953. She graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in 1969 and on Nov. 8 of that year married Edwin Timmer. Together they operated the Lynden Auction Market for 15 years. Raylene was active in the music program and an organist while attending Nooksack Valley Reformed Church. She and Ed later became members of Sonlight Community Christian Reformed Church in Lynden.
Andrew G. Ingram
Andrew G. Ingram was born on Jan. 15, 1979, and passed away on Feb. 17, 2010.
Andrew was taken from us in a tragic plane crash. A brilliant and talented electrical engineer for Tesla Motors, Andrew was a graduate of Harvey Mudd College, class of 2001.
Patsy Bons
Lynden resident Patsy Bons went home to her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010.
A memorial service was held on Monday, March 1, 2010, at New Life Fellowship Church with private burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
