Charles W. Smith
Charles W. Smith, age 94, of Lynden, died at Lynden Manor on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008.
A son of Albert and Maude Smith, he was born in Blooming Grove, N.Y., on Feb. 7, 1914. He grew up in New York state and married Ila Jones on Oct. 19, 1940, in Highland Mills, N.Y., and from 1943 to 1945 served with the 717 Tank Battalion in Europe. Following his discharge, Charles was employed by R.A. VanEtten Excavation Company and later operated his own excavation business until his retirement. He and Ila moved to Lynden in 1993.
Dorothy M. (Visser) Posthuma
Dorothy M. (Visser) Posthuma, age 88, went home to her loving Savior on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Rest Haven Homes in Grand Rapids, Mich.
She was born in Downs, Kan., on June 21, 1920, to Peter and Martha (Wichers) Visser, the eldest of eight children. When she was a child, her family moved to Lynden, where she received her elementary education. She put herself through high school in Chicago, graduating in 1946. She then earned a degree to teach elementary education from Calvin College, graduating in 1950, and that same year married Rev. Roger D. Posthuma, who, after 53 years of marriage, preceded her in death in 2003.
Addie Geraldine Rosenbaum
Addie Geraldine Rosenbaum was born on Sept. 27, 1918, and passed away on Aug. 4, 2008.
Addie was the first of three daughters born to Joel and Anna Rosenbaum on their homestead in Box Elder, Mont. Addie’s family then moved to Yakima, where she graduated from Yakima High School.
Minnie P. Wagter
Minnie P. Wagter, age 96, went home to her Lord and Savior on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008.
A lifetime Lynden resident, she was born on Aug. 6, 1912, to Frank and Lena (Van Overn) Oordt. As a young girl, she attended Lynden Christian Schools. On March 21, 1941, she married Jake Wagter, and together they farmed in the Lynden area. She loved farm life, enjoying the animals and many hours of gardening. Minnie was a member of the Lynden Garden Club and Second Christian Reformed Church.
Verle A. Bruland Petrie
Verle A. Bruland Petrie, of Veneta, Ore., passed away on Aug. 27, 2008. She was born on April 9, 1930, and was a former Ferndale resident.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Norman Bruland and her parents, William and Iris Handy.
Jean Adams
Jean Elizabeth Adams died on Aug. 14, 2008, in Corvallis, Ore. She was born on April 24, 1922.
She was a daughter of D. H. Vander Stoep and Marion Vander Stoep, long-time Lyndenites. She graduated from Lynden High School in 1939.
Jean and her brother, Jim, joined the U. S. Navy on the same day in June 1943. She served in the WAVES. After the war, she married Rex Smith and they had four children Becky, Greg, Grant and Corey. Rex is deceased.
Barbara Wilson
Barbara Wilson, of Bellingham, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008. She was 85 years old.

Susan Rongner
Susan Rongner, of Maple Falls, passed away on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008. She was 57 years old. “Susie, I’ll see you in the morning.”

Dr. William Alfred Gregory
Dr. William Alfred Gregory, age 85, died surrounded by his family and dear friends on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham.
He was born on Aug. 20, 1923, to Erna May and William Alfred Gregory. He grew up in Michigan, where his father worked as a Methodist minister and his mother was the church organist. William Jr., known as Bill, was the second youngest of six children, with three older sisters and two brothers. Bill’s early life was changed forever when he was hit by a car at the age of four while crossing the street. He was put into a body cast and it is thought that he contracted polio while in the hospital, thereafter limiting the use of his right leg. However, this never stopped Bill from doing what he wanted to. He hunted and fished as a child, went iceboating with his brother and friends on Lake Huron, and as a young man signed on as a ship hand and dishwasher on an ore boat that traveled the Great Lakes.
Eugene Richard Hoekema
Eugene Richard Hoekema entered the glorious presence of his Lord on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008.
He was born on July 19, 1934, in Lynden to Peter and Sadie Hoekema. After high school, he graduated with an educational degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and a guidance and counseling master’s degree from Michigan State University. He spent two years in the United States Marine Corps.
John Straka
John Straka passed away on Aug. 18, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. Like all aspects of his life, he took the bull by the horns and put up a good fight.
John was born on Feb. 5, 1934, in Bellingham. John moved to Spokane in 1979 with his wife, daughter and son. There he worked for Northwest Pipeline for 18 years. John was loved by all who knew him. Those who knew him well appreciated his “Johnisms” and one-liners.
Galen Royce Van Boven
Galen Royce Van Boven, age 45, died on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at his Everson residence.
Born in Bellingham on June 25, 1963, to Lloyd and Evelyn (Hollaar) Van Boven, Galen grew up in the Everson area where he attended Everson Christian Reformed Church and Lynden Christian Schools. During his adult life, Galen was employed at several companies using his mechanical/equipment operator skills.
Sophie Green
Sophie Green, age 84, of Lynden, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008.
She was born on Dec. 19, 1923, in Windsor, Ontario, to William and Annie (Elchesan) Batiuk. Sophie married Elmer Green on July 28, 1945.
Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, in 1991; brother Paul; and sister Virginia.
She is survived by her sons, Fred “Rick” (Lynne) Green and Blake (Lee) Green; daughters Gail Ruthven and Darcy (Richard “Pete”) Peterson; grandchildren Stacey and Darren, Erin and Neil, Elizabeth and Ryan and Ross; great-grandchildren Chase, Brynn and Alec; and special niece Irene (Bill) Hodges.
Leslie Dack
Leslie Stanley Dack, of Lynden, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at the age of 89. Leslie will be greatly missed.

Arie Van Weerdhuizen
Arie Van Weerdhuizen, age 60, died unexpectedly at his home in Lynden on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008.
Known as “The Voice of the Northwest Washington Fair” for over three decades, he will be deeply missed by the Lynden community.
Albert J. Hernandez
Albert J. Hernandez, of Ferndale, entered the gates of Heaven on Sept. 26, 2008.
He was born on Dec. 19, 1927, in Carnegie, Okla., to Ben and Anna (Christmas) Hernandez. Al farmed with his father until he entered military service during World War II. He served in the newly formed U.S. Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He proudly tested the original F89 fighter plane and the still-flying C130 cargo plane at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. He served in Germany as crew leader, repairing military aircraft, until his discharge. In 1952, Al trained for an auto body repair career and owned Al’s Body and Radiator Repair in Bellingham. In 1960, he began raising beef cattle. In 1973, he enjoyed Campground Membership Sales as a successful career, retiring in 1993. Until recently, Al and wife Barb traveled the U.S. as members of NACO/Thousand Trails. He is a member of Ferndale Heritage Society and American Legion. Al’s latest enjoyment was spending summers on his tractor and winters at his home in Mission, Texas.
Eugene Clark Luxon
Eugene Clark Luxon, 73, passed peacefully at his home in Birch Bay to his eternal home with the Lord on Oct. 2, 2008, surrounded by dear friends and family.
He was born on June 30, 1935, in Wenatchee, to James and Marie Luxon. Following two years of service in the U.S. Army, Gene attended Western Washington University, where he met and married his beloved wife of 50 years, Grace Manary, of Vancouver, B.C., on Oct. 24, 1957. He received degrees in child psychology and education from Central Washington University and the University of Oregon. After serving as a teacher and school psychologist, Gene became the director of special education for the Northwest Washington Educational Service District in Bellingham. He also served the Merced County Office of Education in California and the Cascade Educational Service District in Leavenworth.
Ada Jacoba DeJong
Ada Jacoba DeJong went home to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 90 on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008.
Born on May 16, 1918, to Elzo and Judith Gelms in Lynden, she attended Ebenezer Christian School. On Jan. 16, 1941, she married Charles Y. DeJong, and they lived in Lynden throughout their lives. He preceded her to eternal life in 1993.
Gilles De Hoog Jr.
Gilles De Hoog Jr. went home to his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at the age of 61 following a short, courageous battle with lymphocytic leukemia.
Born on March 7, 1947, to Gilles and Anna (Vandenberg) De Hoog in Zuidland, Holland, he and his family emigrated from Holland to California in September 1947. In 1954, the family moved to Lynden, and in 1960 they settled in Everson. Gilles attended Lynden Christian schools and the First Christian Reformed Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era from November 1966 to November 1968. His employment included Mt. Baker Plywood, Bode’s Ready-Mix, various other jobs and in 1973 he began farming in the Lynden area.
Delbert E. Lake
Delbert E. Lake, of Bellingham, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008. He was 79 years old.
Delbert was born on Oct. 21, 1928, in Grant Town, W.Va., to Henry D. and Sarah (McCann) Lake. After high school, he joined the Army in 1951, so that he could take care of his mom. He served for 24 years in the Army RA Artillery as master sergeant, and attended Army Jump School. He was stationed in Germany; Korea; El Paso, Texas, and Fort Devens, Mass., where he married Margaret (Peggy) Doherty on June 7, 1957.
Mildred “Millie” (Kroontje) Washburn
Mildred “Millie” (Kroontje) Washburn, 89, of Lopez Island, passed away at Fidalgo Care Center in Anacortes on Oct. 2, 2008.
She was born on Sept. 30, 1919, in Lynden, to John and Effie (Radder) Kroontje and was a 1936 graduate of Mount Baker High School.
