Peyton Joy Egger
Peyton Joy Egger, age 3, died on Friday, July 18, 2008, from an accidental drowning at her home in Sumas.
She was born on March 3, 2005, in Colville, Wash., to Greg and Jill (Mumau) Egger and later that year the family moved to the Sumas area. A bright and energetic 3-year-old, Peyton’s precocious nature captured the hearts of family, friends and everyone she met. Whether outdoors with playmates, swinging in her swing or playing in the water, Peyton’s voice was continually raised in song.
Roy E. Spencer
Roy E. Spencer died at his home on July 24, 2008. He was known by all as a true “southern gentleman.”
Roy was born in Pittsburg, Texas, on April 12, 1920. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Army Air Corp (which later became the Air Force) as a nosegunner in B-24’s.
Darlene Otter
Darlene Otter, age 81, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 21, 2008.
Born on July 30, 1926, in Orange City, Iowa, to John and Christine (Roghair) Bylsma, she moved with her family to Lynden at the age of 18. Darlene graduated from beauty school in Bellingham, where she operated a hair salon until her marriage to Johan “Joe” Otter on March 14, 1951. She used her musical gifts and talents as organist at First Baptist Church in Lynden, was staff organist at Gillies Funeral Home for a number of years and sang with the women’s Nonette choral group. Darlene ministered to many as a fervent prayer warrior and was president of Women’s Aglow. Her hobbies included needlework and sewing.
Darlene Otter
Lynden resident Darlene Otter died on Monday, July 21, 2008, at the age of 81.
Visitation hours will be on Thursday, July 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Gillies Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, July 25, at 10:15 a.m. at Monumenta Cemetery, followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service in the multi-purpose room at North County Christ the King Church (entrance on 18th Street) in Lynden.
W. Ross Massey
Life-time Everson area resident, W. Ross Massey, age 88, was taken to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, July 28, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital.
A son of Floyd and Jessie (Morgan) Massey, Ross was born on June 16, 1920. He was married to Evelyn Killam in Sumas on Nov. 9, 1941, and together they operated the dairy where he lived his entire life. He was also employed at the Columbia Cement quarry for 37 years. Floyd was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Sumas and also volunteered at the Everson Food bank for more than 20 years.
Katherine Ling
Katherine Ling, born on April 1, 1923, passed away on July 19, 2008, after numerous health issues.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; parents La Verne and Herb Childers; brother Herb Childers Jr.; and sister Dorothy Bernard.
Katherine is survived by sons Doug (Dianna) and John Ling; daughters Sandra (Bill) Lloyd and Susan (Bill) Real; and seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Alois Halwachs
Alois Halwachs, of Ferndale, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2008. He was 88 years old.
A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Paul C. Eickmeyer
Paul C. Eickmeyer died at his home surrounded by family on July 10, 2008, of non-smokers lung cancer. He was born in Eugene, Ore., on Sept. 20, 1943.
He retired from Horizon Bank’s Whatcom Commercial Center in April 2007 after a long career in banking, with short times as a deli owner and a real estate agent.
Paul met his wife, Carol, at church while both were going to the University of Oregon. They were married on Sept. 2, 1967. They had three children: Jill, deceased; Kristen, married to Matthew Robinson; and Beth, married to “Matt” Edward Matthews. His grandchildren are Paul and Zoe Robinson and Alyssa and Clayton Matthews.
Marilyn R. Bushey
Marilyn R. Bushey, age 50, walked into the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, Aug. 10, at her home in Blaine.
Marilyn was a daughter of Rev. Douglas and Frances (Barton) Neff of Lynden.
Marilyn was born on Sept. 15, 1957, and raised in San Jose, Calif. She was married to Paul E. Bushey on Oct. 11, 1980. Paul, Marilyn and daughter Alicia moved to Lynden in June 1988.
Raymond J. MacDonald, D.C.
Raymond J. MacDonald, D.C., of Bellingham, passed away on Aug. 3, 2008, after a three-year battle with brain cancer. He was 69. He was born in Seattle on April 10, 1939, to Marie (Hoover) and Raymond I. MacDonald.
Ray graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle in 1957 and served with the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1961. He married Rosalee VanderYacht in Ferndale in 1964 and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, in 1973. Ray owned Ferndale Chiropractic Center, where he practiced for 30 years. In addition to love of his family and chiropractic, his greatest joy was flying airplanes. He was past president of the Washington State Chiropractic Association and the Puget Sound Chiropractors Resource Group, where he was voted Chiropractor of the Year in 1983.
Bev Habib
Bev Habib, our beloved mom, wife and grandma, went home to be with her Heavenly Father early on Friday morning, Aug. 8, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was at home surrounded by her loved ones.
Bev was born in Huntington, Penn., on Aug. 14, 1957, to Norman and Ethel Hardy, and was raised in Middletown, N.Y., by grandmother Pauline Yoakum and Aunt Gloria Jean Bowman. Bev moved to Lynden in October 1987 after marrying her husband Mike, and has been a resident since.
Manuel (Manny) Louis Parriera
After a long, courageous battle with cancer, Manuel (Manny) Louis Parriera, age 85, was taken to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday morning, Aug. 5, 2008.
Manny was born in Tipton, Calif., on March 20, 1923, and worked in the dairy industry his entire life. On Nov. 18, 1943, he married Lena Silva in Artesia, Calif., where they raised five children. They moved to Chino in 1968, and in April 1979 Lena passed away. Manuel met Dixie Turner and they married on Oct. 26, 1980. The couple later moved to Lynden and became members of First Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed woodworking and entertaining his family by playing the accordion.
Jens Overland
Jens Overland, of Bellingham, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008. He was 95 and will be missed by his children Jan-Erik and Inger Overland.

Robert E. “Bud” Zettle
Robert E. “Bud” Zettle, age 85, died on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Alderwood Park Convalescent Center.
Born on Oct. 16, 1922, in Bellingham to Joseph and Bertha (Jones) Zettle, he lived his entire life in the Laurel area where he operated a poultry farm with his brother and father. He attended Meridian schools and served during World War II with the U.S. Army’s 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper in the Pacific Theater. On Nov. 29, 1946, Bud married Mildred Jacobson in Lynden. For 13 years, he was employed by Temco at the ARCO refinery. A member of VFW Post #1585, Bud’s favorite activities were family gatherings, dancing, taking care of his yard and camping.
Martin “Marty” Peter Visser
Martin “Marty” Peter Visser, of Lynden, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2008. He was 77 years old. Marty lived most of his life in Lynden and was in the first class that graduated from Lynden Christian School.
Marty could be stubborn, but he loved his family and the outdoors. He could think of nothing better than to be with his grandkids and other family members while hunting, fishing and camping. He enjoyed basketball, softball (as coach) and swimming.
Jacob Blok
Jacob Blok, age 82, was taken to be with his Heavenly Father at his Lynden-area home on Saturday, Aug. 2.
Jake was a son of Leendert and Maria (Olemans) Blok and was born in Zegveld, the Netherlands, on Jan. 30, 1926. When he was 23, Jake moved to Conrad, Mont., where he worked on a wheat farm and married Margaret VanDyke on May 22, 1952. Jake was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and served until 1953. In 1961, the family moved for a short time to California and then to Monroe, Wash., where they farmed until moving to Lynden in 1972, where they operated a dairy farm on the Beebe Road.
Paul Chilton
Dr. Paul E. Chilton, born on Jan. 2, 1921, went to the Lord on July 27, 2008.
The Arvil and Beth Chilton family came from Missouri to Lynden in 1937 with son Paul and daughters, Doris, Susie and Jeanne.
Paul graduated from Lynden High School in 1939. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Washington and finished dental school in 1946 at the University of Oregon. His first dental practice was in Lynden before moving to Seattle, where he practiced for most of the rest of his years.
Zachary Jake VanderGriend
A gift from God, Zachary Jake VanderGriend, was born to us on June 1, 1983, and flew into the arms of Jesus on Sept. 1, 2008, during takeoff aboard a Neptune P2V-7 fire tanker 09 at Stead airport in Nevada. He and his fellow crew members were on their way to drop retardant on a fire in another location.
