Dick Kooistra
Dick Kooistra, age 86, of Sumas peacefully met his Lord and Savior in his sleep early on Saturday morning, Dec. 30, 2006.
He was born on Feb. 22, 1920 in Rinsumageest, the Netherlands, to Auke and Gelske (Wymenga) Kooistra. He married Alice Kingma on July 21, 1948. In February 1949 they immigrated by boat to New York on their way to new opportunities in Canada.
Rynie Elsasser

Rynie Elsasser, age 88, formerly of Sedro Woolley, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006.
He was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, on Feb. 5, 1918. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the American Legion and the Wildcat Steelhead Club.
Rynie was predeceased by his wife, Audrey Lucille.
He left behind a daughter, Joyce; son-in-law Ray; granddaughter Wendy; three great-grandsons; and sisters Lillian Petersen and Edith Reynolds.
Phillip Gierman

Phillip Gierman, age 23, of Ferndale passed away on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006.
A memorial service was held at the Ferndale Senior Center on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007.
Arrangements were with Moles Greenacres Funeral Home, Cemetery, and On-site Crematory.
Dorothy Trull

Dorothy Mae Trull of Everson passed away on Monday, Dec. 25, 2006.
Dorothy was born on May 13, 1920 in Everson to George and Ruth Todd. She married Roy D. Trull on Nov. 7, 1938.
Dorothy was a homemaker and a devoted mother and grandmother. She had four sons, Roy (Sharon A.), Dennis (Adalgisa), Darrell (Jani) and Richard (Sharon K.). Dorothy was grandmother to eight granddaughters and four grandsons; great-grandmother to eight great-granddaughters and five great-grandsons; and she had one great-great-grandson.
Ervin Hanson

Ervin Arvid Hanson of Seaside, Ore., age 79, passed away at Seaside Hospital on Dec. 27, 2006.
He was born on March 9, 1927 in Ferndale to Edwin and Alma Hanson. Before entering the military service at age 17, he purchased the Salstrom place next to his parents' and grandparents' farm on Grandview Road.
Richard Dennis Matheis
Richard Dennis Matheis, age 55, was called by his Lord Jesus to his heavenly home on Jan. 19, 2007 at 4 p.m. He passed away at his Lynden home surrounded by his family after a 9-month valiant struggle with liver cancer.
Rick was born on Feb. 13, 1951 to Jack and Jean (Herwerden) Matheis in Grand Rapids, Mich. He was the middle child with three brothers and three sisters. His family moved to Everson when he was 4 years old and Rick attended Lynden Christian Grade School until their move to Hull, Iowa, and then to Edmonton, Canada, where he graduated in 1969 from McNally High School. He then moved with his family to Lynden where he began his construction career under the tutelage of contractor Hip Kok.
Sandra Lynn Tiemeyer
Sandra Lynn Tiemeyer, age 44, was promoted to glory through Jesus surrounded by her family at her Lynden-area home on Friday, Jan. 19, 2007.
Sandra was a daughter of William and Marilyn Sybesma, born in Artesia, Calif., on June 6, 1962. She grew up and graduated from high school there and received her certified medical assistant’s certificate from Cerritos College. She was married to Gordon Tiemeyer on Jan. 2, 1981 in Bellflower. Sandra and Gordon moved their family to Lynden in 1990 where they became members of Sonlight Community Christian Reformed Church.
Germaine Gagne
Germaine Gagne of Lynden passed away on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007. She was 90 years old.
One of 12 children, Gerry was known for her great sense of humor, which kept her going even through the hard times. Gerry appreciated the simple things of life. She was able to adapt to new situations, whether living on the East Coast, at Rosewood Villa of Bellingham, in Costa Rica with her missionary daughter and family, or for the past 11 years at the Christian Health Care Center of Lynden. The staff at the center appreciated Gerry’s humor and said it was an honor to be a part of her life.
Ida Mae Page-Buckley
Ida Mae Page-Buckley, age 91, of Bellingham died at the Shuksan Health Care Center on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007.
Born in Buffalo, Texas, on Nov. 2, 1915, Ida was a daughter of William and Elvia (Fergeson) Boykin. She grew up in Texas and was married to Burt G. Page in 1933. They moved with their family to the Lynden area in 1947. A homemaker, Ida enjoyed playing bingo and loved to fish, especially along the Skagit River.
Albert Steffan
Albert Steffan, age 81, of Blaine, a precious husband and loving father, has passed into the spiritual realm and into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007. His sudden death was a shock to all who knew and loved him.
He was born in Lipton, Saskatchewan, on April 23, 1925 and moved with his family to Whatcom County in 1962. Albert was employed for eight years at Uniflite of Bellingham. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where he volunteered his time with the recycling program and also did handyman work for many people in the community.
Ralph E. Wagner
Ralph E. Wagner, age 92, of Lynden passed away at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007.
No services will be conducted.

Mary Agnes “Mary Ann” McLeod Wilson
Mary Agnes “Mary Ann” McLeod Wilson passed away at home in Redlands, Calif., on Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, surrounded by family.
She was born on Dec. 4, 1924 in Bellingham, the third of five children of Elmer Carl McLeod and Beulah Odessa Scull McLeod. Upon graduating from Ferndale High School, Mary Ann received a scholarship to Western Washington College of Education and then transferred on a full scholarship to Westminster Choir College (now part of Rider University), Princeton, N.J., where she received a bachelor's degree in music with a performance emphasis in organ, cello, and choral conducting. She later also held teaching credentials for the State of California.
Alton Kulp

Alton Roger Kulp, born on June 11, 1917, died on Jan. 12, 2007.
Alton was born the ninth of 10 children to John and Mary Kulp in Albion, Wash. He developed a love of horses at an early age and learned a strong work ethic by assisting in harvest and working on a combine crew in the Palouse dryland farming area. His fondest childhood memory was driving a team of 27 horses pulling a combine during harvest at the age of 13.
Donald Alvin Roosendaal
Donald Alvin Roosendaal, age 75, of Lynden went to be with his Lord while surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, from complications due to severe idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
A son of Albert and Agnes Roosendaal, he was born in Lynden on Sept. 15, 1931 and graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in 1950. On July 28, 1955 he was married to Phyllis “Boots” Noteboom, and together they owned and operated a dairy farm north of Lynden which is now Edaleen Dairy. While on the dairy, Don and Phyllis and their four daughters were named the Washington State Dairy Family of the Year in 1973. Following the sale of the farm, Don worked for 13 years at Darigold in Lynden and then for 11 years at VanderGriend Lumber before retiring in 2004.
James Doyle DeJong
James Doyle DeJong, age 62, of Lynden went into the presence of his Lord at St. Joseph Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007.
Born in Deming, N.M., on March 3, 1944, Jim was a son of Doyle and Irene (VanderWerff) DeJong. He grew up in Lynden and graduated from Lynden High School in 1962 where he was active in sports and played for Lynden’s state championship basketball team that year. Following graduation, Jim served in the U.S. Army for three years. He was married to Ruth Schut on Oct. 1, 1965.
James A. Petty
James A. Petty, age 71, of Ferndale passed away on Feb. 1, 2007.
He was born on Aug. 19, 1935 in Durango, Colo., to James and Lorene (Boughan) Petty. James graduated from Ferndale High School in 1954 and spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He married Shirley Polinder on Jan. 5, 1957 in Bellingham. James worked lot maintenance for several car dealerships, eventually retiring from Bellingham Chrysler.
Benjamin Kenneth Hyink
Benjamin Kenneth Hyink, age 83, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 5, 2007.
A son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (VanRooyen) Hyink, he was born on May 23, 1923 in Newkirk, Iowa. He served in World War II from 1943 to 1945 in Burma and India.
Richard Kaiser
Richard Kaiser, age 61, went to be with his Lord while surrounded by his family at his Lynden-area home on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007.
A son of John and Eileen (Jensen) Kaiser, Dick was born in Chowchilla, Calif., on April 27, 1945. From California Dick’s family moved to Reno, Nev., and at the age of 14 to Ferndale where he graduated from Ferndale High School in 1963. On Dec. 6, 1963 he was married to Marilyn Smits in Lynden. Rich worked at Intalco for 12 years prior to becoming a cabinet and furniture maker, and then in 1983 began Kaiser Door & Trim that he and Marilyn operated until his illness.
V. Mae Kirkman
V. Mae Kirkman of Everson died peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007 in Bellingham.
Mae was 82, born on Sept. 1, 1924, in Melville, Saskatchewan, Canada to Thomas and Villa (Stratton) Simpson.
Margaret Jean Erickson
Margaret Jean Erickson was born on July 1, 1931 in Vancouver, B.C., to Agnes and Aubrey Blanchard, and passed away on Feb. 2, 2007.
She grew up as a teenager in Vernon, B.C., and at the age of 17 traveled to see friends in Abbotsford, B.C. Her return home was delayed by flooding along the Fraser River, so she remained in Abbotsford to work as a telephone operator. During this time she met her future husband, Alfred Allen Erickson, whom she married in March 1950.
Danny R. Martin
Danny R. Martin, age 69, died at his Lynden-area home on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007.
Born in Phoenix, Ariz., on Aug. 21, 1937, Dan was a son of Earl and Eleanor Stadtlander. From Arizona the family moved to southern California where he grew up and attended school. On Aug. 6, 1955 he married Shirley Marciniak and in March 1979 they moved with their family to Lynden where they have owned and operated the Lynden KOA the past 28 years. Dan enjoyed traveling, boating and riding dune buggies.
Carol J. Kean
Carol J. Kean passed away in Bellingham on Friday, Jan. 27, 2007.
She was 57, born on May 20, 1949 in Bellingham to Melvin and Alice (Johnson) Flotre. Carol graduated from high school in Blaine and completed beauty school in Bellingham. She was an active member of Custer Methodist Church where she sang in the choir.
Phyllis R. Barr
Phyllis R. Barr of Ferndale passed away on Jan. 29, 2007 at a Bellingham care facility. She was 84.
Phyllis was born in Bellingham on June 5, 1922 to Levi and Mary Axlund. She lived her entire life in Whatcom County. She married Cecil Barr on June 29, 1940, and together they raised two daughters.
Leo D. Groves
Leo D. Groves, age 73, of Everson, former Nooksack Valley School District Superintendent, died at a Bellingham care center on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007.
Leo was born in Iberia, Mo., on July 31, 1933 where he grew up and graduated from high school. He then attended Aurora University of Chicago where he received his bachelor’s degree and met Sumas resident Frances Gonser; they were married on July 29, 1955. Leo taught in central Illinois and received his administrative credentials from the University of Illinois and later his master’s degree from the University of Washington.
