Toni M. Shaw

WENATCHEE - Toni M. Shaw 58, 40-year resident of Wenatchee, died Aug. 12 in Wenatchee.
She had owned a children's day care and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, David Shaw of Wenatchee; daughter Teresa Travis of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sons Chris Shaw and Dan Shaw, both of Malaga; parents John and Nona Guthrie of Dryden; a sister, Brenda Dahl, East Wenatchee; and brother, Phil Guthrie, Dryden.

Walter R. Pumm

MALOTT - Walter R. Pumm, 77 died Aug. 11 after an extended illness.
Survivors include his wife, Anne, Malott; a brother, Charles Pumm of Griffin, Ga.; his two daughters, Debra Ann Yates of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Gail Gallo of Berlin, N.J.; his grandchildren, Dawn, James and Nicole; numerous great-grandchildren; a niece and four nephews, and many friends and neighbors.
At his request, no services are planned at this time.
Memorials are suggested to any charity.
The Okanogan County Crematory and the Precht-Harrison Nearents Chapel, both in Okanogan, were in charge of arrangements.

Jackie Wheeler

REPUBLIC - Jackie Wheeler, 57, Republic, died July 29 in Spokane.
After living in Cucamonga, Calif., where she grew up and attended school, she lived in Tonasket, the Kettle River Valley and Republic.
She is survived by a sister, Debra Anderson; a brother, Dan Kraft of Los Angeles, Calif.; sons Robert Kavanaugh of Albany, Ore., and Tyson Wheeler of Republic; a daughter, Aurora Dawn Bernard of Republic; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, in Stotts RV Park, Curlew.

Kenneth V. Baker
September 20, 1939 - July 24, 2010

Kenneth Baker is survived by his wife, Mary Baker; two sons, Kenneth Baker, Junior, and Scott Baker; 11 brothers and sisters; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
A memorial service will be held Aug. 14, 2010, at the Okanogan Eagles at 1 p.m. A potluck will follow.

Eric Biebesheimer

Eric Biebesheimer was born June 13, 1947, in Napa, Calif., to Howard and Marian Biebesheimer.
On the early morning of August 3rd, 2010, Eric Biebesheimer passed away due to an unexpected condition after hospitalization on August 1st.
A craftsman, engineer, aspiring artist, and vocal community activist, Eric was most importantly a father to his two sons, Fred and Dave, and grandfather to his grandkids Olivia, Ruthie, and Willy. To his family, he taught ethics, the importance of “doing it right,” and spending time with his family. He leaves behind this legacy, and his partner Raylene Lange.
For as long as we can remember, his real home was in the Chiliwist Valley, of rural Okanogan County. A celebration of his life will be held on August 21, 2010, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grange in Malott, Washington.

William Hahn

William Hahn, born Jan. 4, 1956 thru July 31, 2010. Bill passed away at Central Washington Hospital at 12:50 p.m., on Saturday, July 31, 2010, and was surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Linda Hahn and mother-in-law, Bonnie Sowell, both from Okanogan; his two sweet sisters, Linda and her husband, Kevin and his other sweet sister, Tonya, both from Arizona; seven children, Kenny Hahn, Rrichard Hahn and Danny Hahn, all from California, Steven Hahn and Allen Hahn, both from Oregon, Wendy Hahn from Brewster and Micheal Hahn from Idaho; he was a very proud gran-pa of eight grandchildren and was proud to be an uncle to four nephews and two nieces; and extra proud to be allowed the title of great-uncle to two great-nephews. He treasured having so many children in his life and loved each one very dearly!! He will be so greatly missed by everyone. There will be a private celebration of his life for him, with family and very close friends, who ended up becoming a part of our family! Ruth Ann Helms

Ruth Ann Helms was born December 10th, 1946, at Omak, Wash., to parents, Robert Merton and Mary Elizabeth (Brackett) Spaulding. She died Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington at the age of 63.
Ruth was raised in Omak and graduated from Omak High School in 1965. After high school she moved to Alaska and worked for the state of Alaska. She married Gary Ramsey and they later divorced. She moved to Moses Lake, Wash. and then moved to Hermiston in 1990. On November 8, 1991, she married Charles Albert Helms in Boise, Idaho. Ruth worked for Columbia Sun, Maytag Laundromat, and for Wal-Mart as a cashier, in their deli and as a greeter.Ruth and her husband Charles worked for Davis Amusement Company for several years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Umatilla, the Hermiston Eagles Lodge and a past member of the Moses Lake and Irrigon Moose Lodges. Ruth enjoyed bingo, crocheting, fishing, camping, reading, traveling, and her grandchildren.
She is survived by husband, Charles Helms of Irrigon, Ore.; mother, Mary E. Spaulding-Holeman of Okanogan, Wash.; children, Leeann Baldwin of Hermiston, Ore., Eric Ramsey of Irrigon, Ore., Jody Ramsey of Moses Lake, Wash., and Brian Helms of Umatilla, Ore.; brother, Robert Spaulding of Chandler, Indiana; sisters, Lois Lange of Riverside, Wash., and Fae Baker of Omak, Wash.; aunt, Anna Frazier of Okanogan, Wash.; and many loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Spaulding; stepson, Robert Helms; and grandson, Ezekiel Ramsey.
A Celebration of Life Service was held on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at the Hermiston Eagles Lodge, 160 NW 2nd Street, Hermiston, Ore. 97838. Disposition was by cremation.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Portland Office, 380 SE Spokane #110, Portland, OR 97202.

Raquell Kae Palagi

Raquell K. Palagi, was born April 21, 1953, to Kenneth Palagi and Darhl Miller, in Great Falls, Mont. She passed away at home, surrounded by her family on Aug. 4, 2010, in Farger Lake, Wash., after an eight year courageous battle with breast cancer. Raquell’s life was dedicated to her children and her grandchildren (as well as several neighborhood kids she raised as her own).
She worked 11 years at Okanogan Lumber Co., in Okanagan, Wash., until they closed in 2003. She was a creative genius and much of her spare time was devoted to creating fantastic Christmas decorations. She loved to bake with her grandchildren (she made a mean cinnamon roll), can fresh veggies from the garden and putter around the house and yard. She loved her animals or babies as she called them and was never one to turn away a stray. She loved to read and one of her goals in life was to remain a perpetual student as she loved to learn and had an impressive knowledge of many varied subjects.
As she drew closer to the end of her life, she renewed her relationship with God and found comfort in his word. She had a special affinity for Matthew 7:7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” and wrote in her bible that this was her “life passage”. In the last years of her life she moved to Vancouver, Wash., to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother and will be greatly missed.
Raquell was preceded in death by her mother ,Darhl; brother, Brad; and daughter, Heather. She is survived by her husband, Wes Anderson, of Okanogan; father, Kenneth Palagi; her sons, Nate Mower of Omak, Josh Palagi of Omak and Seth Harris of Omak; her daughters, Autumn Harris and husband, Kenneth Harris, of Farger Lake, Amber Ney and husband, Ira Ney, of Vancouver; nine grandchildren; and her close friends, Steven Harris of Vancouver and Corrie Engesath of Vancouver.
Services were held Aug. 10, 2010, at 10:30 a.m., at Liberty Bible Church of the Nazarene, with Larry Rounsley officiating. 12401 Northeast Salmon Creek Avenue, Vancouver, WA 98686-3346

Charles M. Ferren

OMAK — Charles M. Ferren, 76, Omak, died July 30, 2010 at Valley Care Center, Okanogan.
Services were Aug. 10 at the Okanogan City Cemetery.

Juanita Gielarowski

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Juanita Viola Gielarowski, 76, died July 30, 2010 at Holy Family Assisted Living Home, Anchorage.
She was born Aug. 21, 1933, in Omak to Russell and Edith Carpenter.
A graveside service was Aug. 3. Arrangements were by Legacy Funeral Home-Bragaw Chapel.

Leonard E. Todd

OKANOGAN — Leonard E. Todd, 81, died Aug. 7, 2010.
Arrangements are by Legacy Memorial Funeral Home, Omak.

Rose Etta Turner

OKANOGAN — Tonasket native Rose Etta Turner, 61, died Aug. 3, 2010 at her Okanogan home.
She was born Oct. 27, 1948.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Okanogan. Arrangements are by the Okanogan County Crematory, Okanogan.

Randy D. Welborn

OMAK — Randy D. Welborn, 52, died Aug. 5, 2010.
Arrangements are by Legacy Memorial Funeral Home, Omak.

Evelyn Ann Dickson

Evelyn Ann Dickson, 85, passed away peacefully at her home in Port Townsend, Wash., on Aug. 5, 2010.
Evie was born on Feb. 25, 1925, to Lucy and S.D. Cates in Toledo, Ohio. Her family moved to Omak in 1940, when Evie was 15. She attended Omak High School, where she was a cheer leader and prom queen, graduating in 1943. Following graduation, she attended Central Washington State College in Ellensburg.
On Feb. 28, 1946, Evie married her husband, and love of her life, Wesley B. Dickson, of Okanogan.
Wes and Evie lived in many cities throughout Washington, where three of their four children, Lynne, Scott and Bryan, were born. In 1957, they founded their family business, Advanced Equipment Corporation, and opened their first manufacturing plant in Kirkland. Evie worked many years along side Wes, serving as the corporate Secretary-Treasurer.
In 1959, the family, and business, moved to Orange County, Calif., where their fourth child, Paula, was born. Evie and Wes lived in California for 30 years, returning to Washington, and their new home in Port Townsend, in 1989. The move to Port Townsend was the realization of a dream for Evie. She thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent view from their home and loved talking about the ever-changing weather and scenery it afforded.
Evie was a devoted wife, loving mother, talented seamstress, artist, dancer and meticulous home maker, taking great pride in her beautiful surroundings. She and Wes enjoyed traveling and, in addition to visiting Hong Kong and the Middle East, they also experienced numerous trips to various European countries over the years.
Evie leaves behind Wes, her adoring husband of 64 years; her children, Lynne Stanko (David), Scott Dickson (Debby), Bryan Dickson and Paula Spurr (Mike); 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister, Bonnie Strickland and brother, Charles Cates.
Services for Evelyn will be held Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at 1 p.m. in the Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel. Visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the chapel. Graveside services will follow at the Okanogan City Cemetery.

Christl Renate Edith Gassner

Christl Renate Edith Gassner was born in Innsbruck, Austria on Aug. 3, 1940, the daughter of Hans and Edith (Rauch) Gassner.
Christl was known here in Okanogan County as Carmen Fisher.
She had married the son of Loren and Eduth Combs in 1962 while he (Clyde Ellis Combs) was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He was their eldest son. Carmen and Clyde had one son while there in Germany, Mark Anthony Combs. The Army moved them to the base in Junction City, Kansas, where their daughter was born, Tammy Sucette Combs (Hagerup).
She divorced and remarried William Fisher, relocating to Oakland, Calif. They had property here in Okanogan where she lived after her divorced from Bill.
She was preceded in death by her family and both her husbands. She had lived in the states from 1964 until 1994 when her aunt Trudy and mother’s health became an issue and they called upon her to return to her homeland. She took very good care of them until their passing in the early part of 2005. Meanwhile, her own good health had been put on hold. As it turned out, she had fallen ill with cancer. She put up a heck of a fight. She passed Aug. 14, 2010.
In short, she was lively and made friends everywhere she went.
Surviving her are Mark (Jennifer Stone, Shane and Bailey), Tammy and Mike Hagerup, Jason, Jesse and Jacob as well as extended family, Combs and Hagerups.
She will be missed EVERYDAY.

Stanley ‘Stan’ P. Holt

Stanley (Stan) P. Holt, 80, of Omak, Wash., passed away Aug. 12, 2010, peacefully at home after an extended illness.
He was born to Louie and Ester Holt on April 7, 1930. After graduating from Omak High School in 1948, he attended the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in forestry. He returned to Omak and partnered with his brother, Roger, with the family orchard, business, which became Holt Brothers.
On Sept. 25, 1966, in Okanogan he married the love of his life, Shirley, and became the father of her three children, joining them with his four children and became a family.
He remained in the apple production business for 55 years, during which time he became involved with the irrigation district and served on the board for 25 years. He was instrumental in the formation of the Farm Workers’ Clinic, serving as the first chairman of the board.
He is a past member of the Omak Elks, Okanogan Eagles, and is a member of the Omak Presbyterian Church.
He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, fishing, hunting and motorcycling in the hills of Conconully.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Bob (Pam) Anderson, Omak; daughter, Kate (Jeff) Mallett; and daughter, Cindy Anderson (Roattaeberle), Okanogan; sons, John, Doug and Ed; daughter, Lindy; grandchildren, Nathan, Troy, Keegan, Greg, Randy, Tiffany, Ronni and numerous great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded n death by his parents, Louie and Ester Holt; his brothers, Clayton and Roger Holt; grandson, Dexter Barr; and granddaughter, Sheena Anderson.
Stan was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed.
Memorial services for Stan will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel.
Following the memorial service there will be a potluck at the Eagles in Okanogan to celebrate Stan’s life. All are welcome.

Charles Owen Mansfield

Charles Owen Mansfield, a resident of Tigard, Ore. passed away at Meridian Park Hospital on Aug. 7, 2010 with his five children, two daughters-in-law and one grandchild in attendance. He would have been 94 years of age on August 25.
Charles was born in 1916 in Pateros, Wash. His parents were J.W. and Florence Mansfield, who pioneered in the area of Dyer Hill and later moved to Pateros to grow apples. His two brothers, Rhesa and Richard, and sisters, Ruth and Ruby preceded him in death. Stories of his childhood in Pateros will be published in the spring of 2011 by the Okanogan County Historical Society.
He met his wife, Naomi “Becky” Simmons Mansfield, while he was in medical school at OHSU in 1943. They were devoted to each other for 64 years, until her death in August of 2007.
Dr. Mansfield practiced medicine in Okanogan County after he returned from military service as a psychiatric specialist in the Pacific during WWII. In those early days he did his own lab work, made home visits and delivered many babies. He was a compassionate and creative physician in Okanogan and then in Sherwood and Tigard in Oregon. He was on the staff of Meridian Park Hospital when it opened. He retired in 1984.
He is survived by Dick and his wife, Candy, of Tacoma, Wash.; Marilee and her husband, Michael, Cowan of Mosier, Ore.; Anne Mansfield of Portland Ore., Peggy Mansfield and her husband, Roger, Applegate of Keizer Ore., and David and his wife Debbie Mansfield of Tigard, Ore. He loved his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Charles was an avid gardener and loved to study about geology, history, scientific discoveries, and theology. He was fervently interested in peaceful resolution of conflict and care and love of the Earth. He and Becky were charter members of Calvin Presbyterian Church 10445 SW Canterbury Lane, Tigard, OR., where a service of celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2010.

Leonard E. Todd

Leonard E. Todd, “The Wood Man,” completed life’s journey on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010.
Leonard was born on May 18, 1929, in Oklahoma. He served three years in the Navy.
He married Virgie C. Arndt and they moved from Oklahoma to California. Then they settled in the Okanogan Valley. He worked at Keystone Wadell Appleseed Orchards. After he left the orchard, he made a living recycling almost anything and selling firewood.
Leonard was known all over Okanogan and Omak as “The Wood Man.”
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Virgie; his younger brother, Naymond; and both his parents.
He is survived by three sons, Leroy, Joe and Alan Todd, all of Okanogan; and one daughter, Elaine Todd of Omak; five grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; and one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Helen of Oklahoma; and two brothers, Bob Todd, “The Can Man” of Okanogan, and Gary of Oregon.
A potluck memorial service is planned for both Leonard and Virgie on Aug. 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Alan’s home on the Cameron Lake Loop Road. Call 826-2105 for more information.
Arrangements were by Legacy Memorial.

Robert Neal Jr.

KELLER — Robert "Ed" Neal Jr., 65, Keller, died Aug. 6, 2010 at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane.
He was born June 23, 1945, in Omak to Ruth (Gravin) and Robert E. Neal Sr.
Services were Aug. 14 at the Keller Community Center.
Arrangements were by Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel and Okanogan County Crematory, both Okanogan.

Geneva Riibe

Geneva Riibe, age 83, passed away at her home in Wenatchee on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, after an extended illness. She was born to Edward and Nola Shipman, Oct. 4, 1926, in Twila, Ky. She grew up in Habersham, Tenn. In 1942 she moved with her family to Peshastin and then to Omak in 1945, where she met and married Charles H. Riibe on June 8, 1946. Shortly after their union, they moved to Hartington, Neb., to farm. Hardship led them back to Washington in 1953. The family resided in the Omak and Okanogan area until 1969, when they moved to Wenatchee. They moved to Spokane in 1976. Geneva was widowed in 1992. In 2000, she moved back to Wenatchee, close to her children and grandchildren. She loved gardening and the outdoors. She had many stories to tell and loved to share them. Visiting was her favorite pastime.
She was preceded in death by husband, Charles; four daughters; four grandsons; and one great-grandson. She is survived by three daughters; and two sons, Ruby Jenkins of Wenatchee, Bonita Besel of Dryden, Ida Gooch of Waterville, Charles Riibe Jr. and Lincoln Riibe of East Wenatchee. Survivors also include ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She departed here to join our Lord and her late husband.
Memorials are suggested to the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Services will by held Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel.
