Veda I. Painter died May 4, 2008, at Ferry County Memorial Hospital Nursing Home, Republic, with her daughter at her side.
Services were May 9, with burial at Curlew Cemetery and then a luncheon at Curlew Presbyterian Church. Donna Beal, lay pastor, officiated.

Virginia M. Groomes
Okanogan
Virginia M. Groomes passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 3, 1942, at Hulbert, Okla. to Richard and Doris Garman.
Virginia came to the Okanogan Valley as a small child. Virginia met and married Doyle Groomes.
Services were held Saturday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at the Okanogan Valley Memorial Gardens.
Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.
Roy Dean Webster
Roy's unexpected demise occurred at Wenatchee's Central Washington Hospital on April 16, 2008.
He was raised and went to school in Omak, Naches and Okanogan, Washington.
He enjoyed wrestling and football at Okanogan High School.
Interment of his remains was at the Okanogan Cemetery, Okanogan County, Washington.
Sandra L. O’Bryan

Sandra L. O’Bryan, 66, a 48 year Okanogan resident was taken on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at Mid-Valley Hospital in Omak. Sandy was born on April 24, 1942 in Tacoma to Arthur and Edna Gardner. She grew up in Randall, Wash.
Sandy married Jack O’Bryan in Okanogan on June 30, 1961.
Visitation for family and friends was held on Friday, May 9 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Legacy Memorial Funeral Home in Omak. A funeral service was held on Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m. at the Okanogan County Fair Agri-Plex.

JoAnn R. Lyon
JoAnn R. Lyon, 71, Malott, died June 2, 2008, in Malott.
She was born Sept. 20, 1936, to Frank and Rose Claughton, and married Norman Lyon Feb. 14, 1953.

Nola K. Huot, 63, died June 5, 2008, in Conconully. She had been a resident of Conconully for 12 years.

Patricia A. Belgarde, 66, Omak, died May 29, 2008, at Central Washington Hospital, Wenatchee.
She was born Nov. 13, 1941, in Orofino, Idaho, to Ralph and Ardella Scott.
No services will be held at this time. Precht-Harrison Nearents Chapel, Okanogan, was in charge of arrangements.
Kristen Hawkins-Birch
Bridgeport
Kristen Hawkins-Birch, 34, of Bridgeport, passed away May 16, 2008 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane from injuries suffered May 11.
Kristen was born Dec. 31, 1973 in Tucson, Ariz. She grew up in Boulder City, Nev. Kristen moved to Spokane with her mother in 2005 and then they moved to Bridgeport.
Kristen requested in lieu of flowers that family and friends spend time with each other and have a special day together. A memorial celebration of Kristen's life will be held in Bridgeport in June. Kristen's favorite saying was, "Have a nice day and make it count."
Paul H. Stout
Chiliwist
Paul Stout passed away May 31, 2008 at Central Washington Hospital at Wenatchee, Wash. He was born December 23, 1911 in the Chiliwist. He was the last pioneer of the Chiliwist. He was born, raised and worked his whole life on the ranch his parents, Don and Esther Stout, homesteaded in 1901.
There will be a memorial for both Paul and Eula Saturday, June 21 at 1 p.m at Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel in Okanogan, Wash. with a pot luck get-together afterward at the Malott Improvement Club in Malott.
Winifred L. Harper
Aeneas Valley, Wash.
Winifred L. Harper died suddenly on January 23, 2008 in a fire in her home in Aeneas Valley, Wash., at the age of 84. Her husband, Bill, was badly burned and is recovering at their son's home in Castro Valley, Calif.
Wini was born in Alvarado, Calif. which is now Union City. A service of memory will be held on Saturday, June 14 at 11 a.m. at the Senior Citizens Center in Tonasket. A light lunch will be served following the service. The address is 22 East 5th Street, Tonasket. Memorials may be made to the Tonasket Community Scholarship Fund c/o the US Bank in Tonasket. The family wishes to thank those who sent kind wishes and prayers during this difficult time.
William “Willie” Hudson Stapp III
Okanogan
William “Willie” Hudson Stapp III, 63, of Okanogan passed away on May 31, 2008 at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, following a brief illness.
William was born on November 28, 1944 in Fannon County Texas to William Stapp Jr. and Betty Jo Downing-Stapp.Mr. Stapp was a welder and fabricator in steel construction until an eye injury forced him to other lines of work. In 1980 he came to Pateros to stay after visiting the area on numerous occasions during the 1970’s.
A visitation for family and friends was held Monday, June 9 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Legacy Memorial Funeral Home in Omak. Graveside services, with military honors, were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10 at the Locust Grove Cemetery in Brewster. Legacy Memorial Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
Robert (Bob) Patrick Timm
Okanogan
Bob Timm passed away May 30, 2008 at his home on the family ranch. Bob was born August 14, 1950 to Fred and Sally Mary Timm of Okanogan. He attended school in Okanogan, graduating in 1968. Bob went on to college at WSU. While in Pullman he met and married Nita Wood. After he graduated they moved back to the family ranch on the Columbia River. Bob lived and worked on the ranch the rest of his life.
There was a private gathering held at the ranch over the weekend. Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel and the Okanogan Co. Crematory were entrusted with the arrangements.
Patricia A. Libby
Tonasket
She will never be forgotten.
Patricia A. Libby, much loved daughter, sister and friend of many, passed away peacefully at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash. on May 18, 2008.
Patricia was born on August 18, 1939, in West Buxton, Maine. She moved to California with her family in 1956, then up to the Tonasket area in 1973 and lived there with her father until the time of her death.
The memorial service was held on Sunday, June 1 at the Oroville Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah Witnesses, officiated by Jim Walker, a very special friend of Patty’s. A reception was held at the family home after the service for all her many friends and family. The sun was out the whole time.
Delmar Neal Fowler
Okanogan
Delmar Neal Fowler, 84, of Okanogan, Wash. passed away at his home on May 30, 2008.
Delmar was born March 18, 1924 to Willard and Fern Fowler in Republic, Wash. The family moved to Okanogan in 1929 where Delmar attended high school.
Delmar's family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate his life on Saturday, June 14, at 11 a.m. in the Okanogan Masonic Lodge. Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel and the Okanogan Co. Crematory are entrusted with the arrangements. Donations, in Delmar's memory, can be made to Okanogan Regional Home Health & Hospice.
Hugh Allen Lewis
Okanogan
Hugh Allen Lewis, 84, went home to be with the Lord on July 3, 2008. He passed away in Okanogan at Valley Care Nursing Home. He was born on February 27, 1924 to Edwin and Isabelle Lewis in Laurel, Mont.
He joined the Navy in November, 1942. During World War II, he served on LST 1 in Africa, Italy, Salerno and Anzio. After he returned, he married Carolyn Joyce Cook on March 26, 1948 in Polson, Mont.
They came to Okanogan in June of 1971 and started Country Boys Mobile Home Sales, which they owned until 1993 when they retired.
He loved building things and most of all loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Jo) of 60 years; his daughter, Sharon and Roy Atwood of Alpine, Utah; daughter, Barbara Skeen of Okanogan; and son, David and Susan Lewis of Spanaway, Wash. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Amanda Sanders, Eric and Adam Lewis, Lisa Looney and Doug Atwood; and five great-grandchildren, Roxanne Sanders, Robyn, Shannon, and Devin Looney and Nathan Lewis. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters.
There will be a graveside service on Friday, August 15 at 11 a.m. at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash. Legacy Memorial Funeral Home of Omak, Wash. has been entrusted with the final arrangements.
Gordon Sylvester
Oroville
Gordon Sylvester, 80, passed away at his home in Oroville on July 9, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 26, 1928 in Lewistown, Mont. to Arthur and Zelma Sylvester. He moved with his family to Oroville at age three.
Gordon graduated from Oroville High School in 1946, where he enjoyed both sports and music. Following high school, Gordon attended Central Washington University for two years then transferred to Washington State University where he received his degree in Horticulture in 1951. During his years at WSU Gordon was a member of the Acacia Fraternity. This created long-lasting friendships and wonderful memories that were enjoyed at several reunions. Following graduation Gordon attended Boise Links School of Business. Gordon began a career spanning over 50 years in agriculture, first working as a fieldsman for Niagara Chemical Company in Wenatchee. He returned to Oroville to help operate the family apple orchard. Gordon married DeeLoris Semprimoznik on August 11, 1956 at the Tonasket Community Church. Together they purchased the apple orchard where they made their home, raised their four children and were blessed with 52 happy years of marriage. Gordon continued his work as an orchardist until three years ago.
He was a charter member of the Oroville Jaycees and a member of Acacia Fraternity, Washington State Horticulture Association, United Methodist Church, WSU Alumni Association and the Okanogan County Historical Society.
Gordon took pride in his orchard. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, history, playing tennis, baseball, basketball and spending time with his family. He was very musical, playing the trombone in the college band and in a local dance band in Canada. He also sang for many years in the church choir. He volunteered his time helping coach tennis and basketball. Gordon took a personal interest in the lives of his children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was well respected and often described as a “true gentleman.” He had integrity, a strong faith in God and was a loyal Cougar fan.
Gordon was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. He will be missed but we will cherish the many special memories that remain in our hearts.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 52 years, DeeLoris, at home; his daughters, Jodi Lawson, Jina (Jerry) Nelson of Oroville and Lisa Weech of Spokane; his son, John (Anna) Sylvester of Oroville; grandchildren, Taylor and Ryan Weech, Adeline, Isaac and Eliza Sylvester; brother, Jim (Shirley) Sylvester of Kennewick; and many special nieces and nephews.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marylou Montgomery and Joan McAlister; and an infant brother, Grant.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 14, 2008, 11 a.m. at the Oroville United Methodist Church with interment at the Oroville Riverview Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Oroville United Methodist Church or charity of one’s choice.

David H. Schwilke
Riverside
David Harold "Pinky" Schwilke was born in Omak, Wash. on September 13, 1944 to Lois L. and Harold E. Schwilke. He went to the great hunting grounds in heaven while he was sleeping on July 7, 2008.
David attended Omak High School and then immediately joined the U.S. Army in 1963, serving until 1965 at which point he returned back home with an honorable discharge. From 1965 until 1966 he worked on Wells Dam and Little Goose Dam as a carpenter. He married Donna Gustin in 1966 and had three beautiful daughters. That same year he went to work for the U.S. Forest Service in the Tonasket District doing many different jobs until 1973 at which point he began a small gun shop in Riverside, Wash. He worked the business for three years and then hung up his hat to go work for Schwilke Construction in Omak until 1984 and then for Paul's Engines and Machine Works in Oroville from 1984 to 1985. He began working at Crown Zellerbach in 1985. He was mayor of Riverside from 1987-1996 becoming well known for passing an ordinance requiring all residents of Riverside to maintain a firearm and ammunition, exempting convicted felons and anyone who objects to owning a gun for any reason. In 1989 he began courting Jan Knapp and married her on January 28, 1994. While still working for Crown Zellerbach, he started his own business, "Dave's Gun and Pawn" in 1990 located in Riverside, making it a very successful small business. In 1995, failing health forced him into retirement.
During his retirement he spent many days and nights in the mountains hunting and in his cabin (hand built by him and his grandchildren) on Wooloomooloo Creek. A cabin known to many as "The Chicken Ranch." He went on walk-a-bouts with his friends to get out and see the world and in search of "good, fine junk." He was a member of the American Legion, Okanogan County Historical Society, and NRA. He also took an interest in old cars, becoming a member of the Friendly O.K. Car Club, Dodge Brothers Car Club, Model A Ford Club, and then, along with a few very dear friends, started a club in Riverside called The Rust Bunch Car Club.
He is survived by his wife at home in Riverside, Jan Schwilke; his daughters, Deana (Don) Abel of Selah, Wash., Lena (Scott) Daniel of Riverside, Karen Sanders of E. Wenatchee, Wash., Kim Dickinson of Omak, Melony Edwards of Riverside; and a son, Terry (Laurie) Knapp of Tonasket; 15 grandchildren, Tristan Drum, Teala Drum, Nicole Miller, Courtney Daniel, Kaitlynne Daniel, Kaytee Gustin, Little David Sanders, Jessica Dickinson, Ethan Dickinson, Daniel (Kati) Edwards, Cody Herman, Yvonne Hart, Sarah Hall, Trenton Knapp and Tyson Knapp; three great-grand children, Jeremiah, Tayden, and Keagan; three sisters, Linda (Jim) Vance of Pasco, Wash., Vonna Shatto of Oregon, and Verna Schwilke-Boulton of Benton City, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Earl Schwilke; his mother, Lois Leota Schwilke; and a brother, Fredrick C. Schwilke.
At Dave's request, public funeral services will not be held. In celebration of his life, a potluck-barbeque will be held on Friday, July 18, 2008 at the Conconully State Park beginning at 2 p.m. All friends and family are welcome to come "EAT, drink, and be merry" as Dave wished.
Dave was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa, uncle, brother, and friend. He will be extremely missed by all.

KENNETH "KEN' BURT GILMAN
Seattle, WA
Dec 1942 to March 1, 2008
Ken passed away quietly with his wife, daughters and family by his side. He was born Dec. 1942 in Wenatchee, Wash. and grew up in Okanogan Wash. He moved to TriCities and worked for what was formerly known as Thriftway, Mark & Pak and Price Chopper grocery stores. He was in charge of Labor Relations and Management for more than 20 years. Ken relocated to Seattle to manage Food Giant Grocery Chain and later going into business for himself until his retirement.
Dad always enjoyed life to the fullest and loved the outdoors, never giving up the chance to go hunting, fishing, boating, and camping with family and friends.
Ken is survived by wife Connie of Renton, daughter Toni (Mata) husband Andy of Tri-Cities, daughter Chelsea Gilman of Seattle, grandsons Eric and Anthony Mata of TriCities, brothers Wayne (Chris) of Wenatchee, Ray (Helen) Coulee Dam, Harold (Joyce) of Omak, Jim (Mary) of Spokane, Sister Evelyn (Rod) of Spokane. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by has parents, Howard and Edna.
At Dads request there will be no memorial service, but the family will have a Celebration of Life at a later date.
Kenneth "Ken" Burt Gilman
Ken Gilman joined the Lord on March 1, 2008, at Renton, WA. He passed away with his family at his side. He was born in Wenatchee, WA in 1942, to Howard and Edna (Lamb) Gilman. He grew up in Okanogan, WA, graduating from Okanogan High School in 1961. Ken entered the grocery business, working in Omak, Brewster, Tri-Cities and the Seattle areas. Later, Ken went into business for himself before retiring. Ken loved being outdoors and enjoyed going fishing, hunting and camping with family members and friends. Ken is survived by his wife, Connie of the home; daughters, Toni (Andy) Mata of Pasco and Chelsea Gilman of Seattle; grandsons, Eric and Anthony Mata of Pasco; brothers, Wayne (Chris) of Wenatchee, Raymond (Helen) of Coulee Dam, Harold (Joyce) of Omak and Jim (Mary) of Spokane; and his sister, Evelyn (Rod) Schmidt of Spokane. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. At his request, there will be no funeral service, but a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Steve George McCracken
Steven George McCracken, 59 years old, passed away at home on Sept. 27, 2008.
He was born in 1949 to George and Billy Jo McCracken, Omak, Wash. Steve graduated from Omak High School in 1967, then attended Eastern Washington State College.
A remembrance of life, with a potluck following, will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at the Grange Hall in Riverside, Wash.
