Joseph Earley
Joseph Earley, 31, died May 10, 2002 in Omak.
He was born March 21, 1971, in Modesto, Calif., to Gerald Earley and Vera McCuan. He he grew up in Washington and spent nearly all his life in the state. He loved cars, especially low-riders, and he was a master at stereo installation, according to his family.
A memorial service was May 20 in East Side Park, Omak. Memorial donations are suggested to Steve's Discount Stereo, Okanogan.

Betty Nichols
Betty Nichols, 78, Omak, died May 25, 2002 at home following a lengthy illness.
She was born near Edmore, N.D., Dec. 8, 1923, to William and Vera Stevens. Although christened Jessie Elizabeth, she was known as Betty all her life.
A memorial service was May 29 at the Omak Presbyterian Church. Memorials are suggested to the Okanogan Regional Home Health Care and Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Stella Cole
Stella Cole, 75, died May 23, 2002 in Okanogan.
She was born in Utah Jan. 25, 1927. She was a resident of Okanogan for 10 years.
Funeral services were May 30 at Our Lady of the Valley.

Gordon Welch Sr.
TWISP - Early Winters pioneer Gordon Darvin Welch Sr., 90, Twisp, died May 23, 2002 in Okanogan.
He was born in Seattle Aug. 19, 1911. The following spring the family left Ballard by horse and wagon and traveled to their homestead at Early Winters. His father, a carpenter, had traded a home he built in Ballard for the 160-acre homestead at Early Winters.
Funeral services were May 29 at Precht's Methow Valley Chapel with the Rev. Greg Oliver officiating. Interment was in the Beaver Creek Cemetery.
Arrangements were under direction of Precht's Methow Valley Chapel.
Al Oliver Jr.
Al Oliver Jr., 48, Okanogan, died in his sleep May 23, 2002.
He will be remembered for his music, fast old cars, charity work and extreme fishing and camping trips, said his family.
A remembrance will be held at Leader Lake on a day and time to be announced.
Bud Spence
Raymond C. (Bud) Spence, 84, Duley Lake, died June 2, 2002.

George Alfred Walters
George Alfred Walters, 68, Omak, died May 28, 2002 at home after a long illness.
He was born Dec. 16, 1933, in Okanogan, the first of five children to William E. and Cora (Long) Walters. His first few years of life were on the Colville Indian Reservation.
Graveside services were June 3 at the Okanogan Valley Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Alex Pfitzer officiating. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Verna L. Paterson
DAYTON - Verna L. (Barker) Paterson, 61, Dayton, died at her home on May 30, 2002.
She was born Sept. 2, 1940, in Oregon City, Ore., to Donald and Alberta Barker. She spent her early years in Okanogan, graduating from Okanogan High School in 1959.
Funeral services were June 4 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dayton. Interment will be at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center, Dayton Depot Historical Society or any charity through the Hubbard-Rogg Funeral Home, 111 S. Second St., Dayton, WA 99328.
Agnes Agatha Sloan
Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Okanogan, for Agnes Agatha Sloan, 91, Omak. She died May 30. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. June 6 at Precht-Harrison Nearents Chapel, Okanogan.

Loretta A. Northrup, 86, Tonasket, died May 10, 2002 at North Valley Assisted Living Center, Tonasket. No services are planned.
Helen (Jones) Allen
Longtime Omak resident Helen M. (Jones) Allen, 89, died June 16, 2002 at Islands Convalescent Center in Friday Harbor.
She was born May 5, 1913, in Covington, Wash. (now Kent), to Hugo and Jennie Bereiter. She grew up in the Seattle area and married Herman Robert Jones, a machinist in the U.S. Navy, in 1929.
A small family memorial service will be held in Omak at a later date.
Margaret Cornell
Margaret Davis Cornell, 85, died in her sleep at home in Gig Harbor July 14, 2002, with her husband, Paul, at her side.
She was born Oct. 23, 1916, and was the eldest daughter of George and Edna Davis. She grew up on the family's ranch south of Malott, graduated from the eighth grade at Malott School, Okanogan High School and Central Washington College of Education, Cheney.
Services were July 25 in Gig Harbor. Memorials are suggested to the Okanogan County Historical Society.
Howard Washburn
A memorial for Howard Washburn will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Omak Senior Center, 214 N. Juniper.

Alice L. Carpenter
Alice L. Carpenter, 91, Okanogan, died July 22, 2002 at Park Place, Omak.
She was born in Tacoma Feb. 28, 1911, to Nathan J. and Mary Seeley Bortle.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Precht-Harrison Nearents Chapel, Okanogan. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, in the same location.
Interment will be at the Clover Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested in her name to the William and Clara Carpenter Scholarship Fund at Okanogan High School.

James Earl Demarest
James Earl Demarest, 75, died at his home in Omak July 18, 2002.
He was born in Wenatchee Jan. 23, 1927, and attended grade school, middle school and high school in Wenatchee, then Pasadena City College for one year.
Graveside funeral services were July 26 at the Omak Memorial Cemetery.

Ward Milton Clark
Ward Milton Clark, 74, Omak, died July 20, 2002 at Central Washington Hospital, Wenatchee.
He was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Trenton, Neb., and had lived in the Omak area since 1986.
A memorial service was July 24 at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Omak. Memorials are suggested to the cancer care facility Our House, 1708 Castlerock, Wenatchee 98801.
Clarence S. Cook
SEATTLE - Clarence S. Cook, 74, died July 23, 2002 in Seattle.
He was born Oct. 26, 1927, in Okanogan County to John and Naomi Cook. He had lived in Tukwila for most of his life.
A memorial service will be held over the Labor Day weekend in Loomis.

James Waylan Gilkey
James Waylan Gilkey, 18, Okanogan, died July 23, 2002 of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was born in Phoenix, Ariz., May 26, 1984, to James Allen and Victoria Williams Gilkey. He grew up in Ajo, Nogalas and Tucson, all in Arizona.
A family rosary was held at Malott HUD housing with a public rosary July 26 at the Omak Longhouse. Mass was celebrated July 27 at the Omak Longhouse with the Rev. Bob Erickson officiating.

Arline Behrent
Arline Pansy Campbell Behrent, 79, Omak, died July 25, 2002 at Mid-Valley Hospital, Omak.
She was born May 28, 1923, in Shady Brook, Ore., to Thomas and Violet (Spencer) Campbell. She moved with her family to Okanogan County at age 15.
She married Charles W. Behrent April 29, 1942, and lived in Omak at the same address for 60 years.
Services were July 30 at Precht-Harrison Nearents Chapel, Okanogan, with the Rev. Jerry Atchison officiating. Interment was in the Omak Memorial Cemetery.

Mary Lou Lyons
Mary Lou Lyons, 66, Omak, died July 28, 2002 at her home.
She was born June 14, 1936, in Okanogan to Clair and Dorthea (Fleisher) Greely, and graduated from Okanogan High School in 1954.
