Marie A. Bakanen
A gathering will be held at a later date for family and friends of Port Angeles resident Marie A. Bakanen, who died April 22, 2006, at the age of 90. She was born March 15, 1916, in Astoria, Ore., to Dee R. and Hannah (Petersen) Starnes. Mrs. Bakanen enjoyed working with driftwood, bonsai arrangements, keeping her yard a showplace and beach walks. She always had homemade cookies on hand for company. She had made 8 dozen on the day of her first heart attack and offered some to the emergency medical technicians when they came for her. It gave her great joy to have all her family home for the holidays. Many containers of candy and cookies were prepared in advance. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday with more than 50 members of family and friends. Her hobbies included yardwork and crocheting in the fall and winter. She made countless afghans and finished one of the last afghans in just three weeks this spring. She was a member of the bonsai and rock clubs. She is survived by her daughters Barbara Priebe, of Port Angeles, and Charline Sonnabend, of Silverdale; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ludwig Bakanen; brothers Andrew, Mitch, Dee, Ray and Bill Starnes; and sister Christina Christiansen. William D. Boyles
A service has been held for Sequim resident William D. Boyles, who died April 23, 2006, at the age of 58. He was born April 21, 1948, in Presque Isle, Maine, to Ruben and Geraldine R. (Hughes) Boyles. He married Judy K. Walker in Kirkland on Aug. 14, 1970. He retired from the United States Navy as a senior chief off the U.S.S. Nimitz in 1986. He received the following: National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal (four awards); Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device; Humanitarian Service Medal; Navy Unit Commendation, Presidential Unit Citation; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; fifth Good Conduct Award, for the period ending 2/28/90, enlisted surface warfare specialist; and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. He worked for 11 years with McGuire Bearing Co., in Seattle. He loved selling for McGuire Bearing Co. He also loved playing golf with his brothers-in-law, Mike and Jerry Walker. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Sequim and Epiphany Lutheran Church in Kenmore. He is survived by his wife, Judy K. Boyles; daughter Angela M. Martin, of Bothell; brother Loren Boyles, of Portage, Maine; sisters Persis Mooers, of Eastport, Maine, and Janice Mitchell, of Unity, Maine; and one grandchild. Glenn Robert James
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Glenn Robert James, who died April 27, 2006, at the age of 84. He was born May 27, 1921, in Corning, N.Y. to Francis LeRoy and Eva Mae (Decker) James. He married Martha S. Templer on Feb. 2, 1946. He served in the United States Marine Corps from December 1941-September 1945. He earned an electrical engineering degree from Clarkson College of Technology. He worked for IBM for 35 years. He lived in New York, Connecticut, Alabama and California before retiring in 1988 and moving to Sequim. He is survived by his wife, Martha T. James, of Sequim; sons and daughters-in-law David R. and Jean James, of Massachusetts; Stephen W. and Vian James, of Washington; and Glenn C. and Lisa James, of California; daughter Melissa E. James and her partner Jenny, of California; sister Kathryn James of Florida; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Bryan Wendell Johnson
No service has been reported for Port Angeles resident Bryan Wendell Johnson, who died April 14, 2006, at the age of 65. He was born Oct. 6, 1940, in Point Roberts to Sigurd and Margaret (Tipping) Johnson. He served in the Navy as a machinist’s mate from 1957-61. He became a member of the International Association of Machinists and retired as a marine machinist. A former Seattle resident, he moved to the North Olympic Peninsula in 2001. He enjoyed watching cooking shows on television and fishing. He is survived by his brothers and sister-in-law Ivan D. and Rosina Johnson and Douglas Johnson; and sisters Chris Spirz and Shirley Tehan; two nephews and one niece. Hannah E. Johnson
A service has been held for Sequim resident Hannah E. Johnson, who died April 24, 2006, at the age of 77. She was born May 18, 1928, in Jamestown to Nelson and Lydia (Fulton) Dick. She married Harold C. Johnson on March 19, 1949 and lived her entire married life at 1400 Jamestown Road. Mrs. Johnson worked as a housekeeper at Sequim View Nursing Home and Sherwood Manor. She loved dancing and music. She is survived by her husband, Harold C. Johnson of Sequim; sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Megan Johnson and Terry and Sherry Johnson, and daughters Vickie L. Carroll; Sandy Johnson; Verna Johnson and Sue Johnson, all of Sequim; sister Annie Cobarruvias; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Stanley James McNeil
A private family service will be held for Port Angeles resident Stanley James McNeil, who died April 15, 2006, at the age of 76. He was born March 29, 1930, in Seattle to Alexander Sharpe and Sadie Gale (Siegmund) McNeil. He married Michelanne Richardson on March 27, 1982, in Tacoma. He served in the Air Force from 1948-52, as an airman first class. He worked in retail management in Seattle, Tacoma and Glendale, Ariz., before settling in Port Angeles. He was a member of the Elks. He is survived by his wife, Michelanne “Mickey” McNeil; son Mark McNeil of Whidbey Island; daughters Lorraine McNeil of Sumner and Gail McNeil of Tacoma; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.. Karen Lois Nansen
No service has been reported for Port Angeles resident Karen Lois Nansen, who died April 17, 2006, at the age of 66. She was born Jan. 30, 1940, to James Warren and Lois (Gordon) Culver in Casper, Wyo. She married Richard “Dick” Nansen in Rawlins, Wyo., on Dec. 16, 1955. Her lifelong occupation was being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She lived in Casper, Wyo.; Jackson, Wyo.; and in Port Angeles since January of 2000. Christine Candelaria Pruitt
A funeral Mass has been celebrated for Port Angeles resident Christine Candelaria Pruitt, who died April 21, 2006, at the age of 91. She was born Jan. 11, 1915, in Patigonia, Ariz. A loving homemaker, she enjoyed gardening; cooking, and spending time with her pets, especially her dog Sparky. She was a member of Queen of Angeles Catholic Church in Port Angeles. Gordon Randall
Burial with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery was held for former Carlsborg resident Gordon Randall, who died Feb. 18, 2006, at the age of 70. Growing up in Carlsborg, he loved telling stories of his youth, working on dairy farms in the Sequim area and playing baseball. A 1953 graduate of Sequim High School, he joined the Air Force at the age of 17. He spent the next 20 years at Air Force bases in several states as well as Japan and Vietnam. He retired from the military in 1973. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree in education and spent the next 20 years in special education, primarily with the several mentally disabled. After his second retirement, he continued to share his enthusiasm for life and learning by volunteering as a docent at Miami Metrozoo and as a ranger/starter at Calusa Country Club. Even though he lived at the opposite end of the country, he always attended the high school reunions, most recently the all-school reunion last August. He is survived by his wife Arlene; son and daughter-in-law William and Kirsi; brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Kay; sisters and brothers-in-law Sue Roberts and Dave Giles; Ken and Angie Roberts; and Michael and Kathy Roberts; and three grandchildren.
Mildred E. Wasankari
A service has been held for Port Angeles resident Mildred E. Wasankari, who died April 20, 2006, at the age of 92. She was born June 15, 1913, in Enterprise, Ore., to Hugh and Alice M. (Parks) Ford. She married Albert Wasankari in April 1933. He preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1985. She attended high school and beauty school in Oregon. She lived in Forks until 1986, when she moved to Port Angeles. She loved gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed fishing, clam-digging, politics, and working with the West End Democratic Club. She is survived by her sons Richard Wasankari, of Tacoma; David and Sue Wasankari, of Wasilla, Alaska; daughter Patricia Foster, of Port Angeles; daughter-in-law Caroline “Carol” Wasankari, of Sequim; sister and brother-in-law Beaula and Chuck Holland, of Olympia; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Steve Wasankari; son-in-law James Foster; brother Melvin Hugh; sister Frieda Velma; and a grandson. Bernice Pearson Wilhite
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Bernice Pearson Wilhite, who died April 13, 2006, at the age of 93. She was born July 3, 1912, in Seattle to Olof P. and Regina (Lindgren) Pearson. She married John F. Wilhite on May 23, 1936, in Seattle. He preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1985. She attended business college after graduation from Franklin High School in Seattle and was a secretary for several private companies. She also worked for the Mercer Island and Sequim school districts. She lived on Mercer Island from 1938-1969 and in Sequim since 1969. She enjoyed entertaining friends, especially with her homemade wild blackberry pies, which she picked the berries for herself. In addition, she enjoyed gardening, hiking and walking, and salmon fishing. She was an avid bridge player and square dancer for many years. She was a member of Mt. View Homemakers of Sequim and Druzea Club of Seattle. She is survived by her daughters Christy A. Ward, Nancy L. Powers, and Cathlyn G. Nelson; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter. In lieu of any contributions, the family requests that something that flowers be planted in the yard in her memory. Howard William Lerom
A memorial service for Sequim resident Howard William Lerom will be held at noon May 14 at Sherwood Assisted Living, 550 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. Mr. Lerom died May 7, 2006, at the age of 95. He was born Jan. 22, 1911, in Buxton, N.D. He developed an interest in things mechanical at an early age. A ride in a British-built SE-5 observation airplane when he was in grade school began what was to become decades of work in aviation. He became an aircraft and engine mechanic in 1934 and soloed an OX5 powered Travelaire 2000 that year. After servicing airmail planes in North Dakota, he moved to Seattle and obtained his private pilot's license in 1938. He inspected, repaired and rebuilt countless light aircraft and taught aircraft mechanics throughout Washington state until he retired in 1991 from Jefferson County International Airport at Port Townsend. He is survived by his wife, Guinevere Lerom of Sequim; children Randee Slehofer of Port Angeles; Toni Lynde of La Pine, Ore.; and Michael Lerom of Fairfield, La.; four granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and four great-grandsons. Gloria Irene Pinnell
A service has been held for Sequim resident Gloria Irene Pinnell, who died April 26, 2006, at the age of 82. She was born Jan. 27, 1924, in Gardiner to Donald Leo and Farrell Marie (Valentine) Schaeffer. She married Anvil "Sam" Pinnell on March 16, 1967, in Sequim. He preceded her in death in June 2001. She married Tommy G. Young in Gardiner in 1938, who also preceded her in death. She worked as a clam digger, berry picker, brush picker, and sold Avon products. She also worked in home health care. She loved crocheting, knitting, embroidering, playing cards and bingo. She also liked to travel and looked forward to visits from her granddaughter and great-granddaughters. She was a member of Gardiner Garden Club. She is survived by her son, George W. Young of Republic; daughters Ronda Chambers of Port Angeles and Irene Phillips of Kodiak, Alaska; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her daughter Farrell Ann Erickson. Gary M. Grose
Gary M. Grose, a decorated war veteran who served as undersheriff of San Juan County, died Dec. 30 in Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. He was 51.
He was born March 12, 1949 in Chewelah and raised on the family farm in Hunters. He moved to Spokane in 1966 and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1967. He married Chrystal Stokes in 1967 and they had two children, Michelle and Michael.
Grose completed three years of service and one tour of duty in Vietnam in Combat Intelligence LRRP, earning a Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and an expert rifle designation.
In 1974, he became a deputy with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department; he served as a deputy and detective there for eight years.
In 1982, he married Darla Copeland and became the father of two children, Bethany and Sharon.
In 1984, Grose became chief of police of St. Maries, Idaho, and in 1987 moved to Friday Harbor to become undersheriff. Retiring in 1990, he returned to Spokane to spend time with his family. He loved riding his motorcycle and competing in league bowling.
Grose was a member of the Spokane Rifle Club, National Rifle Association, Idaho Chiefs of Police Association, National Chiefs of Police Association, Inland Empire Police Officers Association, American Bowling Association, and Blue Knights Motorcycle Club.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Darla Copeland Grose, of the home; son, Michael Grose, Spokane; daughters, Michelle Starry of Spokane, Bethany Heath of Chattaroy, Sharon Copeland of Seattle; grandchildren, Ashley, Margaret, April, Michael and Kelly; brother, Eugene Grose of Wyoming; sisters, Hope Achenbach of Wilbur and Hollie Grose of Omak; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation is Jan. 4, noon to 8 p.m., in Ball & Dodd Funeral Home, 5100 W. Wellesley Ave., Spokane. Interment follows at Fairmount Memorial Park. Funeral is Jan. 5, 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of memorial contributions, the family prefers participating in the Organ Donor Program.
"He was my first undersheriff and he brought a lot of expertise to the department," said Bill Cumming, San Juan County sheriff. "He was a police professional and did a good job while he was here. "He was friendly and very dedicated to law enforcement. I enjoyed the years I worked with him. He suffered two heart attacks while he was here, and I was saddened to hear of his passing away."
Louise Kramer - Retired fashion store owner
Louise Kramer, who owned a women’s fashion store in Carmel, Calif., during the heyday there of writer John Steinbeck, died Dec. 24 in Friday Harbor.
She was born Helen Louise Gifford on Jan. 3, 1911 in Chalfant, Calif., near Bishop, and was the daughter of a miner and granddaughter of a Saratoga rancher. She lived most of her life on the Monterey Peninsula.
Louise and her husband, Lew, owned and operated Kramer’s, a women’s fashion store, in Carmel, Calif., from 1939 to 1967. She lived in Friday Harbor for the last three years.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Carla Kramer of Friday Harbor; granddaughter, Stefanie Bedard of Jonesborough, Tenn.; and her sister, Berna Kucin, of San Leandro, Calif.
Michael D. Galligan
Michael Donald Galligan, a longtime commercial fisherman, died Jan. 11, 2001, in his home in Friday Harbor, Wash. He was 68.
Mr. Galligan was born Aug. 8, 1932, in Seattle. He resided in Gig Harbor for most of his life.
He worked as a commercial fisherman on his purse seiner, the Margaret J., fishing in Puget Sound and Alaska. He was also employed by Manson Construction Co. in Seattle for many years, first as a pile buck and later as a tugboat skipper.
After retirement, Mr. Galligan lived in Friday Harbor. Fishing, tugboating, friends and family were his passions in life. He also enjoyed inventing and building things around his home and boat, puttering in his yard, cooking and entertaining.
Mr. Galligan was a member of Gig Harbor Eagles, Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association, Gig Harbor Fishermen’s Civic Club, and St. Francis Catholic Church.
Mr. Galligan was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Albe Galligan, and his twin sister, Pat Hansen.
He is survived by his brother, Boyd Galligan of Gig Harbor; his former wife, Beverly Galligan of Gig Harbor; daughters, Cindy Brown of Gig Harbor, Felecia Lange of Homer, and Monica Henderson of Fox Island; son, Michael H. Galligan of Friday Harbor; seven granddaughters and five grandsons.
He made friends wherever he went, and everyone will remember him for his kind heart, generosity, storytelling and terrific sense of humor.
Graveside services were Jan. 17, 10 a.m., at Haven of Rest. Memorial Mass will be celebrated Jan. 17, 11 a.m., in St. Nicholas Catholic Church.

Lee Whitney
Lee Whitney, a beloved husband and father, died peacefully Jan. 9 in Islands Convalescent Center in Friday Harbor, of complications from lung cancer. He was 80.
Mr. Whitney and his wife, Dorothy, were San Juan Island residents since 1971.
Mr. Whitney was born Oct. 31, 1920 in Cherokee, Iowa. In 1947, he married Doris M. Mitchell, who died in 1965. He married Dorothy M. Panther of Spokane, Wash., in 1967.
Mr. Whitney served 22 distinguished years in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. This included assignments during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters and during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Whitney traveled around the world as part of the Army’s Research and Development program. He retired in 1967.
Shortly thereafter, he and Dorothy relocated to San Juan Island where he enjoyed fishing, boating, traveling and operating ham radio station K7IRO.
Mr. Whitney was a member of the Masons, Shriners and the Retired Officers’ Association.
Mr. Whitney is survived by his wife, Dorothy; brother, Del, of Fort Atkinson, Wis.; son, Craig, of Columbia, Mo.; daughter, Kimberly Spring of Mukilteo, Wash.; stepsons, Terry and Dan Panther of Spokane, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Whitney was buried Jan. 13 at Fort Lawton Cemetery in Seattle with full military honors. Memorial gifts may be made to Islands Convalescent Center, 660 Spring St., Friday Harbor, WA. 98250 or the American Cancer Society.
Jeffrey Lee Patty - Volunteer firefighter, EMT
Jeffrey Lee Patty passed away Jan. 30 in his home on Orcas Island, Wash. He was 49.
Mr. Patty was born May 21, 1951 in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Duncan and Charlotte Patty.
He spent his childhood years in Oklahoma and California.
He graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1969.He later lived in the Eureka, Calif., area, where he received his degree in journalism and environmental science from Humboldt State University.
His lifelong interest in nature and the environment led him to pursue hiking, camping and photography everywhere he lived.
Mr. Patty moved to San Juan Island in 1992 to work at Westcott Bay Sea Farms, where he met his wife Rena Bangs. He was a volunteer firefighter and EMT for the San Juan and Orcas Island fire departments.
For the last three years, the Pattys operated Patty Family Farm on Orcas Island.
Mr. Patty is survived by his wife, Rena; sons, Nathan and Michael; stepson, Dylan Taffe; parents, Duncan and Charlotte Patty; brother, David; sisters, Pam Tweet and Liza Spates and their spouses; numerous nieces and nephews and many loving friends and neighbors.
