Betty A. Gaines

Betty A. Gaines, 86, a former longtime Ellensburg resident, died Thursday at Highline Convalescent Center in East Wenatchee. Mrs. Gaines was born in Wheelock, N.D., and came to Ellensburg from Monroe, Wash., in 1950.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Gregory of East Wenatchee and Barbara Gaines of West Yellowstone, Mont.; three sons, Chuck Gaines of Camano Island, Wash., Mike Gaines of Ellensburg and Robert Gaines of Yankton, S.D.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial celebration of life with inurnment in High Valley Cemetery will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Affordable Funeral Care of Ellensburg.
Deon F. Lewis

Deon Fay Lewis, 66, of Yakima died Tuesday in Seattle. Mrs. Lewis was born in Yakima. She worked as a housekeeper for local nursing homes.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Lewis and Kent Reed, both of Yakima; a sister, Beverly Penuel of Yakima; and 10 grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.
Gene Mullen

Gene Mullen, 80, of Selah died Monday at his home. Mr. Mullen was born in Clay Center, Kan., and had been a resident of the Yakima area most of his life. He worked at Boise Cascade for 25 years, in Alaska at a mill and cannery for 10 years, at Jeld-Wen for 12 years and at Tree Top for five years.
Survivors include two sons, David Mullen of Selah and Jim Mullen of Spokane; a daughter, Jennifer Waida of Colorado; a sister, Margie Kuzmak of Yakima; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Selah Church of the Nazarene. Arrangements are by Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors.
Evan M. Sanchey

Marine Corps L. Cpl. Evan Matthew Sanchey, 23, of Union Gap died Wednesday in Irving, Texas. He was born in Yakima. He joined the Marine Corps in August 2007 and had been serving in Afghanistan since March 2010.
Survivors include his parents, Jacqueline and David Phillips of Union Gap; two brothers, Jared Sanchey and Ivan Sanchey, both of Union Gap; and his grandmothers, Alice Durant of Toppenish and Vivian Adams of Wapato.
Services are pending. Arrangements are by Merritt Funeral Home.
Carrol L. Baxter Sr.

Carroll Lee Baxter Sr., 71, of Yakima died Thursday at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center. Mr. Baxter was born in Douglas County, Mo., and served in the Navy. He worked as a policeman and fireman in Clarkston, Wash., and later at Southwest Gas in Phoenix as a line locator.
Survivors include his step-father, Donald Bunten of Yakima; three sons, Clifford Baxter, Douglas Baxter and Carroll Baxter Jr., all of Yakima; a brother, Daimond Baxter of Wenatchee; and a sister, Betty Workman of Missouri.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.
Rande VanLuven

Rande VanLuven, 50, of Union Gap died Thursday. Mr. VanLuven was born in Australia and lived in the Lower Yakima Valley for eight years before moving to Union Gap, where he lived for 36 years. He worked for Gama Foods in Harrah and Johnstone Supply in Yakima as an HVAC technician.
Survivors include his wife, Annette VanLuven of Union Gap; his mother, Patricia Sisson of Yakima; a son, Ryan Whorly of Texas; and a stepson, Cory Michael of Naches.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.
Larry M. Wirta

Larry Michael Wirta, 71, of White Swan died Wednesday. Mr. Wirta was born in Santa Rosa, Calif., and worked in the logging and trucking industries. He was self-employed and had lived in White Swan since 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Ina Ray Wirta of White Swan; two sons, Mike Wirta of California and Ray Wirta of White Swan; two daughters, Terry Ramacca and Tracy McLaughlin, both of Florida; a sister, Sandra Bacon of Central Point, Ore.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be June 5 at 1 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home of Yakima.
Ben A. Sills

Ben Allen Sills, 77, died May 15 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Sills was born in Salem, Ore. He served in the Army from 1947 to 1951. He managed a drug store for a number of years.

Alfred Floyd Emery Button, 81, of Yakima died Thursday at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Yakima.
Mr. Button was born in Prince George, British Columbia. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked as a pressman for the Yakima Herald-Republic for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane Bales Button of Yakima; three sons, Douglas Button of Yakima, Daniel Button of Benton City and Jon Button of East Wenatchee; four stepsons, Larry Bales of Des Moines, Wash., Richard Bales of Bellevue, Wash., James Bales of Yakima and Don Bales of Olympia; 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Keith and Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel in Yakima, and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday at at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 705 S. 38th Ave. in Yakima. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, also at the church.
Burial will be at the Terrace Heights Memorial Park, with full military honors by the William Wharton Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Washington National Guard.
Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home of Yakima.

Homer Dean Haws, 76, of Yakima died Friday at Willow Springs Care.
Mr. Haws was born and raised in Cordell, Okla., moving to Yakima in 1950. He worked for Snokist and then Marq Packaging Systems for more than 30 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Cherie Ostriem of Yakima and Vicki Bronson of Gleed; two sisters, Betty Nichols and Norma Hickman of Yakima; a stepdaughter, Leslie Baker of Albuquerque, N.M., a stepson, Mark Darnell of New Mexico; a stepbrother Danny Loveall of Keller, Texas; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside inurnment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Naches Cemetery.

Mrs. Grundy was born in Rapid City, S.D., moved to Ellensburg in 1942 and then to Yakima in 1953. She worked as a mixologist.
Survivors include five sons, Jack R. Grundy of Port Orchard, Wash., Joshua R. Grundy of Kennewick, and John R., James R. and Jeffery R. Grundy, all of Yakima; two daughters, Sheryl D. Miller and Amelia L. Henderson of Yakima; a sister, Billie Rhodes of Salina, Kan.; 22 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Connie Mendez, 63, of Yakima died Friday at home.
She was born in Hanford, Calif., and worked as a medical receptionist.
Survivors include three sisters, Dora Cantu, Lydia Cantu and Lori Gonzalez, all of California; and three brothers, Florencio Hernandez Jr., Lenard Hernandez of Michigan and Perfecto Hernandez of California.
A memorial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Yakima.

Mrs. Taylor was born in Oregon City, Ore., and worked as a payroll clerk for Tree Top.
Survivors include her husband, Robert O. Taylor of Selah; a daughter, Stephanie Welniak of Selah; a son, Geoff Mitchell of Portland; her stepmother, Lucille Marion McGarry of Portland; many siblings and three grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Keith & Keith Terrace Heights Chapel, 2807 Terrace Heights Drive.

Elizabeth "Liz" (Rapp) McVey, 76, of Yakima died Sunday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. McVey was born in Tulsa, Okla. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Gail Rapp of Kennewick, Bonnie Mertz of Yakima and Barbara Rapp of Waldport, Ore.; a brother, Kenneth Hampton of Broken Arrow, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Jane Schmelzer, 70, of South Cle Elum died Monday at Royal Vista Care Center.
Mrs. Schmelzer was born in Lincolnton, N.C. She was a secretary and worked at the Everett Clinic and then as an attendance secretary at Meadowdale High School in Bothell, Wash. In 2003 she moved to Cle Elum.
Survivors include her husband, Merlyn Schmelzer of South Cle Elum; a son, David Williams of Bothell; three daughters, Cathy Alfson of Elk Grove, Calif., Sandy Lindelof of Cle Elum and Claudine Mikesell of Hoquiam, Wash.; three brothers, one sister and eight grandchildren.
Memorial celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Cle Elum Community Church, with a reception following. Inurnment will be at a later time in Floral Hills Cemetery in Seattle. Arrangements are by Affordable Funeral Care of Ellensburg.

Jorge Cuevas, 29, of Yakima was found dead Friday in Granger.
Mr. Cuevas was born in Santa Maria, Calif. He worked as a laborer in agriculture.
Survivors include his wife, Guadalupe Moreno; a son, Jorge Omar Cuevas of Yakima; a daughter, Erikah Florencia Cuevas of Yakima; his father, Efren Cuevas of Toppenish; his mother, Maria Cuevas of Santa Maria; and two sisters, Esmeralda Cuevas and Veronica Cuevas, both of Santa Maria.
Recitation of the rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Aloysius Church in Toppenish. Burial will follow in Toppenish Elmwood Cemetery.
Amalia Mendoza Carrasco

Amalia Mendoza Carrasco, 90, of Prosser died Saturday at Prosser Memorial Long Term Care.
Mrs. Mendoza was born in M. Pio Coalcoman, Mexico. She moved to Washington in 1977 and lived in Granger and Prosser. She worked in the agricultural industry and was also a homemaker.
Survivors include five sons, Ignacio Carrasco, Antonio Carrasco and Francisco Carrasco, all of Prosser, Pedro Carrasco of Toppenish and Ramon Carrasco of Mesa, Ariz.; two daughters, Adela Carrasco of Sunnyside and Consuelo Carrasco of Yakima; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday. Arrangements are by Prosser Funeral Home.

Richard R. Hayword, 82, of Yakima died Tuesday at Willow Springs.
Mr. Hayword was born in Madison, N.D. He worked as a cowboy for Rehule & Arstein until an injury forced his early retirement.
Survivors include three sons, William Hayword of Athol, Idaho, Daniel Hayword of Yakima and Donald Hayword of Moxee; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Private inurnment will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Moxee. Arrangements are by Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Outlook. She was employed as a bookkeeper for 20 years at Sundown M Ranch.
Survivors include three sons, Steve Wilson of Seattle, Curtis Wilson of Yakima and David Wilson of Prosser; two brothers, Donald E. Stoll of Yakima and Harold Stoll of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Judy Beezley of Long Beach, Wash.; and three grandchildren.
