Arlene C. Grapes, 68, of Ellensburg died Sunday at home.

Mrs. Grapes was born in Engelwood, Ore., and was raised and educated in Bandon, Ore. She lived in south King County while raising her family, working for N.C. Machinery, The Plumbing Joint in Renton, Wash., and The Boeing Co. until retirement. She moved to Ellensburg 10 years ago.

Survivors include her husband, Dee Grapes of Ellensburg; her mother, Winnie Lambert of Ellensburg; two sons, James Grapes of Spokane and Nathan Grapes of Newcastle, Wash.; one daughter, Leah Palmer of Ellensburg; one brother, Harold Steward of Medford, Ore.; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Affordable Funeral Care in Ellensburg. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Family Christian Center in Ellensburg. Burial will follow at High Valley Cemetery.

Affordable Funeral Care, Ellensburg, is in charge of arrangements.

John Joe Garcia

John Joe Garcia, 78, of Burien, Wash., died Friday.

Mr. Garcia was born in Worland, Wyo., and lived in Ohio, California, Tacoma, Wapato, Burien, Wash., and Yakima for 15 years. He served in the Army during World War II and later worked as a die caster making auto parts for Doehler-Jarvis Co.

Survivors include 10 sons, David Garcia, Dennis Garcia, John Garcia Jr., Michael Garcia, Joe Garcia, Anthony Garcia, Charles Garcia, Albert Garcia, John P. Garcia and Matthew Garcia; two daughters, Patty Ann Garcia and Diana May Garcia; four brothers, Joe Garcia, Albert Garcia, Alex Garcia and Moses Garcia; two sisters, Mary Rodriquez and Roberta Garcia; and numerous grandchildren.

Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at Merritt Funeral Home. Tribute service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Merritt Funeral Home. Concluding burial will be at Reservation Community Memorial Park.

Merritt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey G. Decoto

Jeffrey G. Decoto, 42, of Selah died Sunday at home after a recent surgery.

Mr. Decoto was born in Yakima. He had worked at The Boeing Co. for the past several years.

Survivors include four children, Jake Decoto and Zack Decoto of Seattle, Joe Decoto of Selah and Wayne Dixon of Phoenix; his mother, Leone Decoto of Yakima; two brothers, Jack Decoto of Seattle and Jim Decoto of Yakima; and two sisters, Denie Carter of Yakima and Connie Hache of Richland.

Services are pending.

Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

W. Ronald "Ron" Jenkins

YAKIMA - W. Ronald "Ron" Jenkins, age 92, of Yakima, died January 4, 2004 at Renaissance Care Center. Ron was born August 17, 1911 in Yakima where he has been a lifetime resident.

Ron attended Yakima Senior High School and graduated in 1931. He later met and married his wife, Dorothy and had been married for 55 years. Ron worked for City Peerless and Crest Company for twenty-six years; Dorothy worked for Sea First Bank for thirty-nine years. They had three boys.

Ron's past hobbies included fishing and dancing. He was a longtime active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church; was a charter member of the West Valley Lions Club and had been involved with Toastmasters of Yakima.

He leaves his wife, Dorothy, at home; son, Robert Andrew Jenkins, Chehalis; and a sister, Betty Heinl, of Portland, Ore. He was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald F. Jenkins and Rodney Jenkins; brothers, Tom Jenkins and Frederick Jenkins.

Graveside Services will be held at 11:30 AM, Saturday, January 10, 2003 at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Memorial Services will follow at 12 Noon at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 801 Tieton Drive, Yakima. Visitation will be Thursday and Friday from 4-8 PM at Keith and Keith Funeral Home on Ninth Avenue. Memorial contributions are suggested to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Oliver Kenneth Gifford

YAKIMA - Oliver Kenneth Gifford, 82, died at home Saturday, January 31, 2004. He was born September 14, 1921 in Buena, WA to Mathew J. and Dorothy A. (Rogers) Gifford. He was raised in the Selah/Yakima area, at age 20 he entered the U.S. Air Force and served from 1942 to 1945. He met his future wife Dorothy Mayor in England. After World War II, he moved her and their son, Ken to Yakima. He worked for Yakima Cement for 13 years and then worked for Hi Country Foods for 17 years before retiring.

He was a member of the Toastmaster's, a former Commander of the American Legion; he enjoyed fishing, especially in Alaska, and playing the ponies! He was actively involved in scouting serving as a scoutmaster. He will be greatly missed by his special friends from Hill's Café, the Golden Wheel and Mel's Diner and will be remembered for never meeting a stranger.

He is survived by one son, Kenneth (Susanne) Gifford of Naches, WA; three daughters Paulette Stinson of Battleground, WA, Catherine (Pete) Mauro of Anchorage, AK and Barbara (Steve) Danberg of Everett, WA; several grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy of 54 years, son-in-law Bill Stinson, granddaughter Heidi and three brothers.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 5 S. Naches Ave., Yakima. Private burial services will follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Research in Oliver's memory. Arrangements in care of Shaw & Sons Funeral Directors, Yakima.

Alice L. McKinney

Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home

YAKIMA - Alice L. Mayenshein Wagner McKinney, 85, of Yakima, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Yakima Regional Medical Center.

Alice was born May 4, 1919, in Grandview, the daughter of Dr. O. L. and Bessie (Cranson) Mayenshein. She was the youngest and last surviving of five brothers and sisters.

Alice spent her childhood in Grandview. She then moved to Seattle, where she lived most of her life. During World War II, Alice worked as a policewoman at Mare Island Naval Base in California. She returned to Seattle and worked as a cook at the Good Shepherd Home and at various restaurants. After her children were grown, she moved to Walla Walla and then to Yakima with her daughter, Barbara and Roy Garza, who cared for her the last four years.

Her entire life was devoted to her children. She was a very loving and giving person, who to the end worried more for others than herself. She was much loved and treasured and will be sorely missed by all those who knew her.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara L. McKinney and her companion, Roy Garza of Yakima and Margaret C. Mazeski of Moses Lake; three grandchildren, Mark Hooper of Seattle, Heather Hanson of Lynnwood and Jennifer Johnson of Everett; three great-grandchildren, Kevin, Christopher and Brayden, with a fourth on the way and seven nieces and nephews.

A Vigil Service will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 Noon, Thursday, June 3, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Norman J. Melberg

Einan's Funeral Home

RICHLAND - Norman J. Melberg, 92 of Richland went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 31st, 2004. Norman was born in Auburn, Washington on December 17th, 1911 to Julius and Ella Melberg. His childhood was spent in Ada, Minnesota and Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.

Norman was proud to have served in WWII, enlisting December 8th, 1941. He served in the 814th U.S. Army Aviation Engineers in North Africa and Europe. After the war he became a carpenter working out of Carpenters Local No 770. He primarily worked on large construction projects including dams, bridges and the Hanford N Reactor.

He met Alice E. Davis while on a working vacation at the Double K Ranch near Goose Prairie, Washington in 1953. They were married later that same year and lived in the Yakima area for over forty years.

Norman enjoyed the mountains and being in the outdoors. He was active as a scoutmaster for Boy Scouts while his boys were young. He also enjoyed raising cattle and Percheron draft horses on his ranch outside of Yakima.

He is survived by two sons, Bill and daughter-in-law, Cathy of Richland, Washington, and Ted of Salmon, Idaho. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Christopher Melberg, Megan Melberg, Tyler Melberg, Hannah Melberg and Brittney Melberg, all of Richland.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alice in 1996.

Norman is the last of his generation having outlived three brothers and three sisters. He will be missed, especially at extended family functions, for his Dutch oven cooking, and for his sense of humor and many interesting stories.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Lydie L. Spanick

Kramer Funeral Home, Palouse, WA

PULLMAN, WA - Lydie L. Spanick, 88, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005 at her home in Pullman. Lydie was born October 27, 1915 at Auburn, WA to Joseph and Altie (Schultz) Albert. She married Alphonse Spanick on July 9, 1953.

She attended the Presbyterian Church in Pullman and Auburn, WA, and the Selah Covenant Church in Selah, WA. She was a member of the Cyclaman #65, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Damascus #3 White Shrine at Auburn. She loved children, cooking, her pets, music and dancing.

Survivors include. her son. James Fletcher and wife, Ruth Ann of Auburn; two daughters, Norma J. Smith and husband, Gerald of Selah, Nancy L. Flechsig and husband, Alfred of Pullman; 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alphonse in 1989.

Visitation will be held October 6 to October 8, from 9am to 9pm at Kramer Funeral Home, Palouse, WA, 509-878-1221. A memorial graveside inurnment service will be held Saturday, October 16, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery at Auburn, WA. A reception will follow the graveside service at the White River Presbyterian Church, 526 12th Street S.E., Auburn, WA. Memorials may be given to The Friends of Hospice, 1256 S.E. Bishop Blvd, Suite J, Pullman, WA 99163 or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, P.O. Box 2472, Spokane, WA 99210-2472.

Armando Benavides Sr.

YAKIMA - Armando Benavides, Sr., 46, of Toppenish died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Yakima Regional Medical & Cardiac Center.

Mr. Benavides was born Sept. 17, 1958, to Carmen (Alejandro) and Melquin Benavides in Tempe, Ariz. and worked as a truck driver for Riojas Trucking.

Survivors include his wife, Maria Rosa Benavides of Toppenish; two sons, Juan Benavides and Armando Benavides, Jr. both of Toppenish; four daughters, Esmeralda Benavides, Nancy Benavides, Veronica Benavides and Vanessa Benavides all of Toppenish; his mother, Carmen Sanchez; three grandchildren; four brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a Vigil Service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Colonial Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Aloysius Parish with burial following at Elmwood Cemetery. Colonial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jesus Aguilar

Jesus Aguilar, 72, of Yakima died Wednesday.

Mr. Aguilar was born in Michoacan, Mexico. He was a farm worker.

Survivors include his wife, Vinidita Aguilar of Yakima; a son, Rosendo Aguilar of Yakima; six daughters, Maria Jesus Chavez and Guadalupe Aguilar of California, Mireya Aguilar, Sandra Aguilar, Gabriela Aguilar and Elvia Aguilar of Yakima; four brothers, Tiodomiro Aguilar of Oregon, Salvador Aguilar, Rosendo Aguilar and Cipriano Aguilar of Mexico; five sisters, Leonor Aguilar of Oregon, Francisca Aguilar and Clara Aguilar of California, and Maria Aguilar and Rosario Aguilar of Mexico; and 14 grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a rosary at 6 p.m., at Valley Hills Funeral Home Chapel, Yakima. Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Yakima. Burial will be in Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

Lavina Logie Cloud

Lavina Logie Cloud, 69, of Wishram died Thursday at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center.

She was born in Brownstown and lived in the Yakima Valley and along the Columbia River. She was an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation.

Survivors include her husband, Willard Cloud Sr. of Wishram; nine children, Jacquelyn Cloud, Willa Cloud and Leila Cloud of Wishram, Muriel Cloud of Stevenson, Wash., Brenda Cloud of Warm Springs, Ore., Martha Cloud of Toppenish, Arthur Cloud, Willard Cloud Jr. and Walter Cloud, all of Wishram; three sisters, Mina Azure of Tacoma, Tucelia James of Wapato and Susie Sutterlict of White Swan; a brother, Daniel Logie of White Swan; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Dressing services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Toppenish Longhouse, followed by overnight services. Burial will be at sunrise Saturday at Wish'xam Cemetery in Dallesport, Wash.

Robert I. Parsons

Robert I. Parsons, 89, of Ellensburg died March 13 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Yakima.

Mr. Parsons was born in Alberta, Canada, and for 44 years made his home in the Manastash Canyon in the Kittitas Valley. He was a truck driver in the logging industry and for the state Department of Transportation.

Survivors include three daughters, Connie Bennett, Gerry Kinnan and Ginger Sutton, all of Ellensburg; and two stepsons, Zane and Don Parsons, both of Canada.

A memorial gathering will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Club, 1101 Craig Ave. Inurnment will be at High Valley Cemetery at a later date.

Affordable Funeral Care, Ellensburg, is handling arrangements.

R. Clayton Udell

R. Clayton Udell, 71, of Yakima died Wednesday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Udell was born in Yakima. He was a longtime apple orchardist and also had a long career with Hanson Fruit and Strand Apples. He served as apple commissioner for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Julie; a son, Robert of Yakima; two daughters, Suzanne Ota of Federal Way, Wash., and Jennifer Fisher of Portland; two sisters, Esther Cox of Elk, Wash., and Nancy Hopf of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and 12 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Latter-day Saints, Yakima Stake Center on 38th Avenue.

Keith and Keith Funeral Home is in charge ofarrangements.

Maureen Anne Deschampe

Maureen Anne Deschampe, 65, of Selah died Monday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Deschampe was born in Kettering, England. She lived and worked in Madrid, Spain, for one year before moving to Merritt Island, Fla. She returned to England and lived in Northhampton from 1968 until moving to Selah in 1980. She worked for the Selah School District for 23 years, until Jan. 1, 2008, when she was forced to retire due to illness.

Survivors include her husband, Marvin Deschampe; a daughter, Shari Shaw of Selah; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.

Edward Bates

Edward Bates, 87, of Yakima died Monday at Heritage Grove.

Mr. Bates was born in Walla Walla, and was a veteran. He worked as a correctional officer.

Survivors include a son, Stanley Bates of Phoenix; a brother, Gene L. Bates of Clarkston, Wash.; three sisters, Joan McRae of Milton-Freewater, Ore., Elaine Bates of Portland and Shirley Fuller of Walla Walla; two stepdaughters, Shirley Harp and Patricia Anderson; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no services.

Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory, Yakima, is in charge of arrangements.

Mario Carranza, 29, of Mattawa died Wednesday. Mr. Carranza was born in Sunnyside and educated in Mattawa. He worked for several wineries in Paterson.

Survivors include his parents, Jose and Soledad Carranza; three brothers, Jose of Texas and Javier and Carlos of Mattawa; five sisters, Celia of Mexico, Elena of Sunnyside and Patty, Maria and Silvia, all of Mattawa.

Viewing will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, with a rosary service at 6 p.m., at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow in the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens.

Eduardo Guerrero

Eduardo Guerrero, 21, of Mattawa died Wednesday due to injuries sustained in an auto accident. Mr. Guerrero was born in Sunnyside. He was working at his mother's day care in Mattawa.

Survivors include his parents, Rafael and Rosa Guerrero of Mattawa; two brothers, Juan Guerrero of Mexico and Rafael Guerrero Jr. of Grandview; a sister, Ana Laura Alvares of Grandview; and his companion, Rosaura Morfin.

Viewing will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, with a rosary service at 6 p.m., at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow in the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens.
