Richard David Boyle
Born December 9, 1929 in Tacoma, WA, passed away August 30, 2001 at Overlake Hospital, Bellevue. Dick attended and played football for Stadium High School in Tacoma, WSU and the University of Puget Sound. He worked for U.S. West and retired after 38 years. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sally; daughters Lou Anne Boyle, Colleen Boyle (Randy), Janet Scott (James); sons David (Elena), Patrick (Tracy) and Steven (Jayne) Boyle; seven grandchildren; brothers Don (Rainy) Boyle, Paul Boyle (Helen) and Joseph Boyle. Funeral service will be held 11:30 am Wednesday, September 5 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bellevue. Remembrances may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Research U.W., 1959 Pacific Street, Seattle, WA 98195. The family also asks that, if possible, please give blood to your local blood bank. George H. McNett
George H. McNett, age 81, was born May 14, 1920 in Rainier, WA to William Edward McNett and Lura Ellen Eddy. He served as a corporal in the US Army in WWII, receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart from action in the Philippines. After returning home he married Maxine Core. George worked 38 years for the Hooker Chemical Co. in Tacoma. George was on the Franklin Pierce County School Board for 17 years, and was active in the Boy Scouts where he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. After retiring, George and Maxine moved to Westport, WA, where he served 13 years as first councilor in the Westport Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood carving and being involved with his family. George is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maxine; four sons, Steven (Melinda) of Gresham, OR, Edward (Diane) of Bay City, WA, Grady (Karen) of Murray, UT, David (Kathy) of Elma, WA; 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; one sister, Kay Lou Benson of Olympia, WA; brother David J. McNett, Olympia, WA. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 12:30 PM at Mt. View Memorial Park. Glen Carmack
Glen Carmack, longtime watchmaker, Parkland jewelry store owner and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, died Aug. 31 at Madigan Army Medical Center. The son of Albert and Rennah Carmack, he was born in Blanchard, Okla., on April 15, 1912, the day The Titanic sank. The family moved to California, and in 1929, when he was 17, Mr. Carmack enlisted in the Navy. In 1986, after 53 years of marriage, his wife, Margaret, died. His two brothers, Robert and Kenneth, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Audrey and Russ Wallwork of Sumner, and Kathy and John McCulloch of Salem, Ore., and by his son and daughter-in-law, Russ and Pat Carmack of Tacoma. His family also includes 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was fortunate in his later years to find love and companionship with Verna Onufer of Lakewood. Glen’s children are grateful to Verna for being a part of their father’s life. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Mountain View Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. S.W., Lakewood. A funeral service with full military honors will be held at Mountain View’s Garden Chapel at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5. A private family interment will follow at Tacoma Mausoleum.

Kathryn Viola Vachal
Kathryn Vachal passed away Aug. 31, 2001 at age 88. Kathryn was born Feb. 16, 1913 in Salix, Iowa. Kathryn is survived by 4 children: daughter Doris McInnis and husband Jack, son Roger Larsen, son Larry Larsen and wife Jeanette, daughter Lineah Lester and husband Richard, who was Kathryn’s personal angel; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Kenneth Guy Chittick
Age 64, of Palm Springs, CA; Seattle and Tacoma, WA; passed away unexpectedly August 10, 2001 at his home in Palm Springs. Ken was born on April 30, 1937 in Carson, ND, son of the late Frederick and Mary Chittick of Tacoma, WA. Ken is survived by his life partner of 35 years, Gordon D. Clapp of Palm Springs; brother Larry Chittick and sister-in-law Marcia, nephew Greg and niece Vicki, all of Tacoma, WA; his extended family, David Talt, son Ryan, close friend James Souther, all of Palm Springs; Aimee and Mark Puetz, their sons Cole and Andrew, of Brier, WA; special business partner and dearest friend Sara Hoppin, dear friend Judy Williams, both of Seattle; and, of course, his beloved dog Kati. Memorial services will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood, WA on 9/8/01 at 1:00 PM in the Valley Chapel. Albert Kenneth Bonar
Albert Kenneth Bonar was born on Dec. 27, 1917 in Henryetta, OK to Frank and Ethel Bonar. He moved to Pierce County where he worked at Western Farmers Associates as a machine operator. He retired after 31 years. Albert was a strong supporter of World Vision Ministries and the Bethany Baptist retired men’s breakfast club. He was a veteran of WWII. He is preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, 1 sister, son Frank, and wife A. Maxine Hudson-Bonar. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Maxine Bonar; daughters Rosita (Harold) Collier, Joyce (Bill) Bowers, Janean (Floyd) Nearhood; sons Kurt (Elizabeth) Bonar, Dave (Veronica) Bonar; brother Guy Bonar; sister Martha Bonar; 20 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Frank W. (Wally) Farron
Born January 12, 1924 in Tacoma, WA, Wally Farron passed away peacefully at the family home at Adelaide Beach on August 29, 2001. The son of Ed and Rose Farron, he spent his childhood years in Harrah and Morton, then moved to Tacoma and attended Mason Jr. High, graduating from Stadium High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force after high school and, upon his return to Tacoma, attended the University of Washington. In 1949 he started Farron Insurance Agency, which merged with Tom Taylor Insurance Brokers in March of 2000. At one time he owned Tacoma Tug and Barge for about 10 years. Wally was involved in banking activities for over 30 years, beginning with Bank of Olympia and continuing on with Tacoma Bank, where he was President and Charter Board Member; Mid-Valley Bank in Omak and the Bank of Honolulu. Over the years Wally belonged to many organizations, including Fircrest Golf Club, Tacoma Country and Golf Club, Avondale Golf Club in Palm Desert, the Elks Lodge #174 where he was a 50+ year member, Past President of the University Club, the Propeller Club and the Pharoah Club. Active in the Pacific Northwest boating community since 1952, Wally was not only a member of Day Island Yacht Club, but both a member and Past Commodore of Tacoma Yacht Club. He was Commodore several times of the Evergreen Fleet, an organization promoting community and military affairs. He also served 6 years as a Board Member of Annie Wright. He was an avid Husky fan for over 50 years. Wally was proud of his Native American heritage and a member of the Cowlitz/Quinault Nation. He had a passion for eagles, the saltwater, and his family of girls. He is survived by his wife Barbara, with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on August 23rd of this year; his daughters Barbara and Jane of Tacoma, his daughter Kathryn of Bainbridge Island; and his black and white adopted stray cat, G.G. He will be remembered for declaring it “another lousy day in Paradise”, which began during the stays in his condo in Maui. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Tacoma-Pierce County Humane Society. A memorial is planned for the very near future and will be announced.

Belva Crist (Mom)
Born September 20, 1918. Died August 30, 2001. Survived by 4 children, Lois, Linda, Debbie and Louann. She was preceded in death by her only son, Bill. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Belva was a longtime member of Tacoma Moose Lodge and Tacoma Eagles. Glen Carmack
Glen Carmack, longtime watchmaker, Parkland jewelry store owner and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, died Aug. 31 at Madigan Army Medical Center. He was 89. The son of Elbert and Rennah Carmack, he was born in Blanchard, Okla., on April 15, 1912, the day The Titanic sank. The family moved to California, and in 1929, when he was 17, Mr. Carmack enlisted in the Navy. In the Navy, he developed into an independent, responsible, disciplined perfectionist who had a talent for working with his hands. He could build, repair or improve upon anything from miniature watch gears to the massive steam pipes and boilers of four-stack WW II destroyers. He was proud to have been one of the youngest sailors to earn the rank of Chief Boilermaker. On May 20, 1933, he married Margaret Mihalic of Maynard, Ohio. During World War II he served on destroyers in the Pacific and the Atlantic. In 1950, after 21 years of service, he retired. His last duty station was the Naval Reserve Center on Tacoma’s Tideflats. He and his family settled in Summit, then moved to Parkland, where he founded Tic Toc Jewelry. He was the shop’s owner and watchmaker for 30 years. A model railroading enthusiast, he began collecting Lionel trains after the birth of his son, Russ. Together they built a 15-by-35-foot layout that could send four trains at a time running over mountains, and through towns and switchyards. In 1986, after 53 years of marriage, his wife, Margaret, died. His two brothers, Robert and Kenneth, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Audrey and Russ Wallwork of Sumner, and Kathy and John McCulloch of Salem, Ore., and by his son and daughter-in-law, Russ and Pat Carmack of Tacoma. His family also includes 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was fortunate in his later years to find love and companionship with Verna Onufer of Lakewood. Together they enjoyed cruises, road trips and excursions to Reno. Glen’s children are grateful to Verna for being a part of their father’s life. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Mountain View Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. S.W., Lakewood. A funeral service with full military honors will be held at Mountain View’s Garden Chapel at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5. A private family interment will follow at Tacoma Mausoleum. The family would like to thank Franciscan Hospice and the staff at Madigan Army Medical Center for their caring and attention to Glen during his final battle with Parkinson’s Disease, and for continuing to honor our country’s medical commitment to retired military personnel.

Jean H. Etter
Jean H. Etter, 79, of Lakewood, died unexpectedly in her home on Saturday, August 25, 2001. She is survived by her son, Richard K. Etter of Everett, WA; and her two daughters, Marguerite L. Wesseler of Lakewood and Marlene H. Etter, who lives in Chad, Africa; as well as eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was a member of Lake City Community Church for nearly 40 years. She was an avid bowler, and will be missed by many friends and her family, most of all. We are rejoicing that she is with her precious Lord and Savior. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 PM at Lake City Community Church. Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 3 from 11:00 AM-9:00 PM, and on Tuesday, Sept. 4 from 9:00 AM-9:00 PM at Mt. View Funeral Home. Carl J. Terrana
May 24, 1939 – August 27, 2001
Proud father of Dino (Lesa), Mickele, Mark (Nani), Jeff (Jennifer) and treasured grandfather of Kylie, Kyra, Makenna, Keoni, Julia and one blessing yet to be born. Carl is also survived by his brother Sam Jr.; former wife Myrna; mother- in-law Grace Schmidt, sisters-in-law Gale Schmidt and Jan Terrana and numerous relatives, neighbors, friends and flying buddies. He was also preceded in death by his beloved parents Sam and Grace and brother Tom. Born and raised in West Seattle, he married and raised his children there after graduating from Seattle Prep in 1957. During the 1960’s he pursued his childhood dream of learning to fly, subsequently buying his first airplane. Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s Carl successfully started and built up his business Western Trailer Repair, eventually employing all four children. Suffering from juvenile arthritis since age 14, he gradually turned the running of W.T.R. over to his children. During this time, he was able to pursue his dual passions of buying and flying various airplanes, including Stearman Bi-Planes, AT-6 Harvard and a British Hawker Hurricane “Warbird”. He also flew with the flying group “Texan Flight” lead by Ken Morley. Carl will be remembered as a good dad, a delighted grandfather and a generous friend. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m., Tues., Sept. 4 at Holy Rosary Church, West Seattle, Followed by graveside interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Reception to follow at the Museum of Flight. CAROL E. OEHME
On August 31, 2001, Carol began her eternal rest. Born in Tacoma, WA on November 23, 1916, Carol attended Stadium High School, Lincoln High School and College of Puget Sound. A member of Mensa, Carol was, during her lifetime, a private secretary, a teacher and a free lance writer. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Willard H. Oehme; sister-in-law Mrs. Joseph Kane of San Carlos, CA; also survived by 7 nephews in CA and AZ. At Carol’s request, cremation will occur and there will be no services.
