Dorothy (Dottie) M. Midal
Dorothy M. Midal was born August 2, 1930 in Tacoma and passed away September 2, 2001, at age 71, in Tacoma. She was an active member of the South Tacoma Eagles Aerie 2933 for 31 years. She and her husband belong to the NO MAD RV Club. Dottie’s life shall remain forever cherished in the hearts and souls of her husband, Thomas Midal, son, William Kendall (Tammy), step-daughter, Dianna Kern (Dale), 7 grandchildren, sister, Sybina Cheek (Ray), brother-in-law Bud Busch (Dottie), brother-in-law Allen (Evelyn), sister-in-law, Doris Jensen, many nieces, nephews and cousins, her family of friends and her beloved dog Baby. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Dorothy Vincent, brother William M. Vincent, sisters Betty Busch and Marlene Martin. At Dottie’s request there will be graveside services at the Old Tacoma Cemetery, 4801 So. Tacoma Way on Thursday, September 6th at 11:00 AM immediately followed by a celebration of her life at the South Tacoma Eagles, 7037 So. Pine Street. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. A special thank you to her cousins, Clovis and Jerry, Dr. Baker and Staff, Hospice, family and family of friends who cherished Dottie’s last days with her at home where she wanted to be. Let’s play one last hand of Thirty-One (31) for Dottie.

Dorothy Marie Coleman
Dorothy Marie Coleman, 82, born June 26, 1919 in Washington, DC to Grayson and Ellen Ahalt, died peacefully September 3, 2001 in Tacoma. Dorothy moved to Tacoma in September 1952 with her husband Herb, of Tacoma, and their two children, Richard and Patricia. Dorothy is survived by her husband Herbert M. Coleman, daughter Patricia Fairchild and her two sons, Josef and Randall Fairchild of Reston, VA. Her son Richard died in 1970 as a result of a freeway accident. One of Dorothy’s last wishes was to give her love to all her friends, whom she loved and who loved her in return. A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 8, 2001 at 12:30pm at Mt. View Memorial Park in Lakewood, WA. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home, 584-0252.

Helen S. Doane
Helen, 89, passed away Aug. 30, 2001 in Tacoma, WA. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her sons Fred and Steve; daughters Marya and Kathy; two sisters Marcella and Wanda; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Special thanks to Heartwood Extended Health Care and their staff and especially to Louise Hall for her special care and assistance to Helen and her family. Funeral services to celebrate Helen’s life will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 12, 2001 in the Piper-Morley-Mellinger Funeral Home, 5436 South Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA 253-472-3353.

James Bruce Ponton
James Bruce Ponton, 70, died August 27, 2001 in Swedish Hospital in Seattle. He had been employed by many different restaurants in the Seattle-Tacoma area but spent his last years at 13 Coins in SeaTac. James was preceded in death by a close friend, Roger Cole. He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Quinn; an aunt, Betty Lampert; niece Jolynn Davies; and nephew Scott Ponton. Graveside services will be held Saturday, 9-8-01 at 11:00 AM at New Tacoma Cemetery, 9221 Chambers Creek Road W., University Place, WA.

Jerry Paul Buck
Jerry Paul Buck, 68, passed away Sept. 2, 2001 in Tacoma. He was born Dec. 16, 1932 in Tacoma to Paul and Kathryn Buck. At age 16 he was one of the youngest harness horse drivers in the US. He served in the US Army as a Corporal. After marriage, he and his wife Sue showed Quarter Horses. Jerry worked for the Holroyd Company and recently owned and operated Buck’s Topsoil. He enjoyed fishing in his lake, races at Emerald Downs and breakfast with the “guys”. Surviving family members include his wife of 40 years, Sue, son Brad of Seattle, daughter Wendi and son-in-law Peter McGovern of NY, and nephew David Carter and wife Mary of Graham. He was preceded in death by his sister and parents. He was a lifetime member of the Washington Horsmen, a former member of the American Quarter Horse Assn., NW Cutting Horse Assn., Harness Horse Assn., and a member of the Teamsters and SMW Associations. Memorial services will be conducted at Fir Lane Funeral Chapel, Friday, Sept. 7, 2001 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Pierce County Fire District 21, 17520 - 22nd Ave. E., Tacoma, WA 98445.

Lavonne Nadine Turnbull
Lavonne Nadine Turnbull, 77, was born September 28, 1923 in Tacoma to Glen and Hilma English. She passed away September 2, 2001 in Puyallup. Lavonne was a resident of the Sumner-Edgewood area for over 40 years. She graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma and worked at Nalley Valley in the 1950’s. She was a key punch operator at the Ordnance Depot at Ft. Lewis and was a computer operator at GSA in Auburn until her retirement. Lavonne was a member of the Edgewood Community Church. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who always put her family first. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; by son, Kelly; and by daughter-in-law, Jan. Lavonne is survived by her sons, Douglas Turnbull of Puyallup, Terry Turnbull of South Prairie and Kirk Turnbull of Newport, OR; daughter, Nadine Rowe (Dick) of Gig Harbor; 9 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. Special thanks to the Silhouette Adult Family Home for all the loving care given to Lavonne. Viewing Thursday, 1-8 PM and Friday, 9 AM - 8 PM at Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 8th at 10:00 AM at Sumner Cemetery. Memorial services will follow at 11:00 AM at the Edgewood Community Church. LOREN HAYES COOK
“I DID IT MY WAY!”
Loren was born on June 25, 1923 in Reemsville, Nebraska, as the only child of John and Viva Cook. He passed away at his home in Sumner, Washington, on Tuesday, August 28, 2001. He served a distinguished career in the U.S. Maritime Service Merchant Marine during World War II, receiving all four medals issued in oceangoing campaign theaters, and retired as Commander from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945. He moved to Sumner in 1951. He is survived by a son, Terry (Wendela) Cook of Huntington Beach, California, and daughter, Lori (Randy) McKibbin of Bonney Lake, Washington, and five granddaughters: Melissa and Miranda McKibbin and Desiree, Ivana and Nikki Cook. During his long and varied career, Loren served as food and beverage manager for Boeing Food Services and for the Swept Wing Inn in Seattle, and retired in 1982 as owner-manager of Girard Wood Products in Puyallup. He was a life member of BPO Elks, the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles (Puyallup Aerie) and the VFW in Ephrata. Loren’s sudden passing leaves a large void among his many friends and confidantes. He will long be remembered for his wicked sense of humor, his loyalty to friends, his love of life and good company, and his avid pursuits of hunting and fishing in Alaska. Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 7, 2001, at 3:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, 320 Pioneer Ave. W. in Puyallup. Following the services, there will be a “no host” gathering for family and friends at Loren’s “second home”, Anton’s Restaurant in Puyallup.

Lori A. VanderPas
Lori A. VanderPas, 43, beloved wife, mother and friend, lost her battle with cancer on September 1, 2001 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Puyallup, Washington. Lori was born at Fort Benning, Georgia on August 11, 1958 to Gerald and Janet Hudson. She resided in the South Hill Community for many years and attended several different schools within the Puyallup school district, including Rogers High School. She worked as a Certified Nurses Assistant at Good Samaritan Hospital Home Health for several years. Most recently, she worked as a tax preparer in Federal Way. She volunteered within the community and served in the past as co-president at Zeigar PTA and as a board member for Puyallup Junior Football. Survivors include her husband, William VanderPas; her mother, Janet Hudson, Parkland, Washington; her 3 children, Bryan and Keith Swain of Puyallup and Tara VanderPas of Sumner; 2 brothers, Jeff Hudson (Wands) of Tunnel Hill, Georgia and Mark Hudson (Linda) of Edgington, Illinois; and 3 sisters, Lisa Mangler (Lonnie) of Enderlin, North Dakota, Julie Aschim (Brian) and Kimberlee Hudson, both from Parkland, Washington. Her father, Gerald Hudson, preceded Lori in death. Lori’s life will be forever cherished in the hearts of all she touched. The memorial service will be at the Life Center Chapel, 1717 South Union Avenue in Tacoma at 1:00 PM Friday, September 7. Graveside services will follow at Woodbine Cemetery, 2323 9th Street SW in Puyallup. Memoriams may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Margaret (Mina) Marshbank
Margaret (Mina) Marshbank, of Federal Way, retired/former President of the Seattle Board of Realtors, who loved her family and travel and had a flair for writing children’s stories, died Friday, 8/31/01 peacefully in her garden. She was one of 8 children born on a farm in Illinois on 2/25/14. In addition to her sister, Violet Collier of Algona, WA, she is survived by her children John Marshbank of Tacoma, Kenneth Marshbank of Gig Harbor and Judy Haiar of Shelton; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, 9/6/01 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Federal Way, 30029 16th Ave. S, Federal Way. It will be followed by a celebration of Margaret’s life at the church from 1:30-3:30 PM. Remembrances may be made to this church whose pastor and members enriched her life with their friendship.

Margaret H. Faulk
Margaret H. Faulk, 85, died August 25, 2001. She was born in Toronto, Canada, and had been a Tacoma resident since 1932. She attended Stadium High School, worked as an accountant for Nalley’s, and ten years in the office of Dr. Larkin. She was a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church for 50 years, serving as Superintendent of Sunday School. Survivors include her sons, John of Ketchum, Idaho, Bruce of Carlsbad, NM; grandsons Robert and Steven; niece Claire Scharmach and nephew Gregory Scharmach. Memorial services will be held at Immanuel Presbyterian Church at 10:00 am on Friday, September 7, 2001. Arrangements under the direction of Lynn Funeral Home, 253-272-2131.

Anna Mildred Aslakson
Millie, as she was affectionately known by family and friends, died peacefully and without pain on August 28, 2001 at the “young” age of 90. She was born in Glenwood, Minnesota to Osmund and Julia Storlie Aslakson on January 30, 1911. She was the youngest of eight children: the only one surviving her is sister, Dagny Ellickson, of Gig Harbor. Also mourning her death are the Barsness, Ellickson and Teigen nieces and nephews, their families, former neighbors and many friends. Millie was a nurse and served her country in WW II as a 1st Lt. in the 67th Evacuation Hospital of the 1st Army Division. She was cited with several medals and the Certificate of Merit. After discharge from active duty she was Assistant Director, Nursing Service, at American Lake Veterans Hospital until her retirement in 1967. Millie epitomized the adage, “Quiet waters run deep.” She was a loyal and faithful friend and in her quiet way ministered compassion. She visited the ill and shut in, drove friends to appointments or took them shopping (she loved to drive). Her passions were for God, her church, family and friends. She was also very fond of cats, Scrabble, gardening and the Mariners. We wish to thanks the doctors and nurses at Allenmore Hospital for their tender and loving care of Aunt Millie, especially Drs. Jordan, Weled and Kahlstrom and nurses Dale and Ann. Arrangements for cremation and inurnment by New Tacoma Cemetery and Funeral Home on Chambers Creek Road. A celebration of her life and home-going will be held on Saturday, September 15th at 4 o’clock at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church on the corner of Rosedale and Skansie in Gig Harbor. Memorials may be given to Habitat for Humanity or to CHPC Room to Grow Fund.

Norman J. Heyel
Norman, 63, passed away unexpectedly August 30, 2001 at his mother’s home in Tacoma, WA. He was a good man and will be greatly missed by his wife Supatra Heyel, his stepdaughter Somruttai Stowers and grandchild Brittany. His mother Violet Heyel, his siblings and spouses, James and Barbara Heyel, Bonnie and Joe Jindra, Connie and Ted Richey and Mary and Gerry Jackl also survive him. Norman was born on September 29, 1937 in Ontonagon, MI, raised in Tacoma and resided in Fairfax, Virginia. He attended St. Patrick's Elementary School, Bellarmine High School and graduated from Seattle University with a degree in Political Science. He satisfied his military commitment with a 2-year tour of duty in the Army. Norman had a successful career with the U.S. State Department and retired after 25 years of service. Norman enjoyed traveling and spent much of his career overseas. After retirement, he visited his many relatives and friends in Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Illinois. A memorial service to celebrate Norman’s life will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday, September 5, 2001 in Piper-Morley-Mellinger Funeral Home, 5436 S Puget Sound, Tacoma.

passed away August 28, 2001. Born in 1920. Worked in a sawmill most of his life. A member of Jehovah’s Witness for over 50 years. Survived by sisters Olga Nelson and Jennie Barrow.
