Ray L. Rich
Ray L. Rich, 81, died peacefully on Friday, August 31, 2001, in Tacoma. Ray was born on April 9, 1920 in Rainier, WA, raised in Roy. He served in the Navy during World War II. Ray became an active member of the Car Salesmen’s Union Local #1048 in 1951, of which he was elected president in 1962. In 1965 he became president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union #367, serving in this position for 17 years. Ray was truly concerned for the well-being of his membership and became a trustee for the United Food and Commercial Workers Health and Welfare Trust. From this position he was instrumental in the creation and improvement of medical coverage, as well as the formation of a pension trust for union employees. Ray served in numerous organizations, including Chairman of the Tacoma-Pierce County Blood Bank and on the board of directors for United Way. Ray’s concern for people and his willingness to devote his time enabled him to touch the lives of thousands. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean; son Jerry; daughters Jeanette Anderson and Joan Schwab; daughter-in-law Nancy; sons-in-law Dan Anderson and Jim Schwab; as well as granddaughters Dayna, Jenae, Joanna, Amy and Heidi; and great-grandson Tad. Ray’s surviving brothers are Joseph and Harry, and sisters Elma Jopp and Iva Cowan. At Rays’ request, a small family memorial will be held. Memoriams may be sent to the American Heart Association.

Renato E.F. Jones
Renato Enrico Ferrari Jones, 50, passed away on September 1, 2001 in Puyallup, Washington. He was a loving husband for 17 years to Ruth, and a devoted father to Allison (age 15), Becky (age 13), and Natasha (age 7). Preceded in death by his mother, the late Mina Ferrari Jones, Renato is also survived by his father, Colonel Samuel Albert Jones (Ret.), and his five siblings, Alberto P.F. Jones (Tacoma, WA), Mirella R.F. Reeves (Everett, WA), Mara R. Ferrari (Bellevue, WA), Carlo A.F. Jones (Denver, CO), and Loredana M.F. Littles (Scottsdale, AZ). He will be dearly missed. Renato, born Feb. 1, 1951, graduated from Clover Park High School in Tacoma in 1969. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from Washington State University and a master’s degree in Education from City University. Renato taught elementary school for 27 years, the majority of them at Madison Elementary School in Olympia, Washington. The family will host a viewing at Mountain View Funeral Home 4100 Steilacoom Blvd., Lakewood, Washington, on Friday, September 7, 2001, from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at Life Center First Assembly of God, 1600 South Union Avenue, Tacoma, Washington, beginning at 11:00 am ((253) 756-5300/5302). MR. SHIRLEY WEKELL
Shirley Matheson Wekell of Tacoma, 86, passed away Sept. 3, 2001. Born in Grand Forks, BC, April 29, 1915, he moved to Tacoma and graduated from Stadium High in 1933, then attended College of Puget Sound. In the 60 years that he worked for and owned North Star Glove Co. in Tacoma, he started and managed a sewing plant in Orting, WA in 1944, became company President in 1962, and combined both operations into one in 1963 in Nalley Valley-Tacoma. He retired in 1991 and the firm is operated today by his two sons. Shirley was well known in Orting where he served as Mayor (1952- 56), was a member of the Lions Club and Masonic Lodge #71. He helped with the Daffodil Float from Orting as early as the late 1940's, was President of the Daffodil Festival in 1964, and was instrumental in starting the Daffodilians in 1965. Upon moving back to Tacoma, Shirley became active with the Afifi Shrine Royal Order of Jesters #104, the Tacoma Elks #174, and reaffirmed his membership with Bethany Presbyterian Church. He also served on the National Board of the Work Glove Mfg'rs. Assn. Along with his wife, they loved world travel. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois, and their four children: Tom (Joan), Rob (Connie), Kathryn (Paul) Brown, all of Tacoma, and Shirley Lois (Jim) Wood of Lakeview, MI. Grandchildren are Jane Pulliam, Megan Amend, Jeremy Wekell, Matiele and Kelsey Wekell, Anna Musselman, Deb Houchins, Stephen and Becky Brown, Teri Sherman, Lisa Saxton, Julie and Pam Kellogg. There are four great- grandsons. Together with many other family, friends and business acquaintances, he will be greatly missed. He was an inspiration to many. A memorial service to celebrate Shirley's wonderful life will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001 at 2:00pm at the Afifi Shriners Center, 815 S. Vassault (off S. 12th St. behind Temple Beth El),Tacoma, WA; (253) 565-2055. Thomas P. King
Thomas P. King, born May 14, 1947 in Sharon, PA, passed away suddenly September 4, 2001 in Tacoma. Tom served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War teaching English to the Vietnamese children. He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service over 20 years, most recently as a Labor Relations Specialist through Seattle assigned to bulk mail in Federal Way. Tom was a Deacon at First Christian Church. Survivors include wife Naomi of Puyallup, daughters Jeanette Ashton of Kent and Katelynn King of Dallas, TX, sister Margaret King of PA, grandson Bryant Ashton. Memorial services will be held Friday, September 7, 2001 at 2:00 pm at First Christian Church, 602 N. Orchard. William “Bill” Craig, 68, passed away August 31, 2001 in Tacoma. He was born December 16, 1932 in Tacoma, where he has been a lifetime resident. Bill loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his children, Kelli Bruso of Lakebay, WA, Kevin Craig of Tacoma, Kip Craig of Silverado, CA and Heather Craig of Sumner; sisters Mae, Elva and Evelyn; 22 grandchildren, 4 great- grandchildren. William (Bill) Francis Nettle
At 86 years of age, Bill passed away September 1, 2001. He was born October 24, 1914 to Richard Nettle and Mildred May Nettle in Butte, Montana. He served in the military in the Pacific during World War II. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Dora Nettle, and his children, Richard Nettle (Paula), Gig Harbor; Christine Nettle-Fallat (Jack), Fircrest; Roger Nettle, San Francisco; Mary Jane Blaylock (Derek), Seattle. Bill’s five grandchildren are Scott, Aubrie and Michael Nettle, and Claire and Melissa Fallat. Bill’s sister, Mary Osier, and brother, Jack Nettle, are residing in Butte, Montana. Bill has been a resident of Tacoma since 1953 and a member of St. Ann’s Parish. He retired from Tacoma City Light in 1984 after 25 years. The family wishes to thank the staff at Manor Care for their care and support during his illness. We are especially grateful to the RN’s, LPN’s and all CNA’s on the 100 hall during the past year. Columbus Black
Columbus Black was born Feb. 8, 1919 in Uriah, AL and passed away Sept. 1, 2001 in Tacoma, WA. He was married to a loving wife of 44 years and she and family members mourn his death. He retired from the U.S. Army with 28 1/2 years of patriotic service. He was devoted to and active with the Prince Hall Masonic Family. Mr. Black earned a distinct place in the “ 2001 Voter’s Hall of Fame” of Pierce County Washington as a citizen voting in the county for 60 years or more. Dale Emmet Brown, Sr.
Dale Emmet Brown, Sr. was born in Chico, Texas, July 22, 1931 and went to be with the lord August 30, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Genevieve (Crane). Dale served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, serving in both the Korean and the Vietnam Wars for which he received 11 medals including the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He retired from the army in 1971. Dale was then employed for the next twenty years by the Bethel School District, retiring in 1991. He is survived by daughter Katherine Poston (Rick), son Dale Emmett Brown Jr. (Teta), daughter Bobbette Peterson (David), daughter Kimberley Dolan (John), 8 grand children, and 2 great grand children. A grave side service will be held at Yelm Cemetery, Yelm WA, Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

David Michael Leebrick
Dave Leebrick, 55, of Allyn, Washington, passed away Aug. 30, 2001 after a ten-month journey with cancer. He was born in Denver, Colorado on Aug. 12, 1946. Dave is survived by his brothers Richard Leebrick (Sandy) and Donald Leebrick (Iris Fudell), nephews Rick, Chris, Andy, and Eddie and niece Laura. He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Clerise Leebrick. He will be missed, also, by dear friends Eloise Richardson and Bob Evans and Leah and Josh Reisberg. Dave found joy in running, tennis, the Mariners and his beloved pets. He touched the lived of his students at Lowell and Boze Elementary Schools in Tacoma during his 13 year career in special education. His love of baseball began as a pitcher for his high school and college (Whitworth), where he earned first-string All American honors. Dave’s family is grateful to the caregivers, friends, and coworkers who supported him during his illness. A special thank you to Tacoma Public School employees who donated sick leave to Dave. Because of Dave’s love of children, memorial donations may be made in his name to Bridges: A Center for Grieving Children, 310 No. K Street, Tacoma 98403.
