Helen Campanoli Seward Clarey
Nov. 15, 1909 - Sept. 3, 2001
Helen Clarey was born in Portland, Oregon to Italian immigrant parents Serafino Cecchetti and Maria Belletini-Cecchetti (Mike and Mary Campanoli). The family moved to Tacoma shortly thereafter, where Helen spent a happy childhood along with older brothers William, Aldo, James (now deceased) and Joe, who still survive her. She was preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Charles F. Clarey, in 1974, and her only son, Robert J. Clarey, in 1972. Helen is survived by her only daughter, Nadine M. Cox. She is also survived by eight grandchildren - Lynn, Eunice’, Vince, Bob, Carol, Steve, Kathy and Peter. Besides those named above, Helen is survived by a circle of love comprised of twenty-four great- grandchildren and several great- great-grandchildren. Her greatest joy, besides husband Charlie and monkey Poco, was her large family. She especially enjoyed telling stories of her youthful escapades. Helen was extremely proud of leading her eighth grade baseball team to the City Championships. That was in 1923 and she still had the newspaper clipping to show any disbelievers. Helen didn’t complete the ninth grade. However, in 1960 she graduated from Bates Technical- Vocational School as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She worked at Tacoma General Hospital for a few short years. Then, in 1967, she and Charlie sold their farm in Federal Way and moved to Graham. After Charlie’s passing, Helen occupied herself by playing pinochle and performing volunteer work. She gave her time at the American Veterans Hospital, the Orting Soldiers Home, and to first-graders in the Orting Public Schools. She also belonged to the Sts. Cosmas and Damian Altar Society and the Orting Senior Citizens Center. In 2001 she was named an honorary member of the Spar Flies (Metro Park Women’s Softball Champions). As a Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Sister and friend, Helen was loyal, loving and giving, not to mention opinionated and, at times, downright rowdy. She fought hard against her disease, but Alzheimer’s is a clever thief. Helen found great pleasure in gardening. Each of her grandchildren can remember pulling carrots out of the dirt in her sunken garden and chomping them with glee. Animals also brought her great joy. In later years goats, chickens and dogs kept her busy and happy. Helen leaves behind a legacy of hearty laughter, story-telling, mischief and love. We are missing her. We feel blessed to have had Helen in our lives and, now, in our spirits. A special thank you goes to all of you at The Highlands Care Center who treated Helen just like you would your own Grandma. It means so much. Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, September 7, 2001, 2:00 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church. The family suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Helen’s name. Arrangements by Gaffney Cassedy Allen and Buckley King.
