Thelma was born and raised in Tacoma and had lived in University Place since 1945. Besides her devotion to her family, Thelma was dedicated to nurturing stray animals, particularly dogs, and over the years provided comfort and found homes for countless dogs. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jack, and is survived byher daughter Sharon (Rob) Tillotson, son Gary Covington, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. At her request, no services will be held, but remembrances may be made to Pierce County Animal Welfare, 8504 Chambers Creek Rd. W., University Place, WA 98467.

Barbara Jean (Bailey) Kammeyer
7-29-40 9-6-01
Lifelong resident of Tacoma. Graduated from Franklin Pierce High School in 1959. Worked many years for J.C. Penney’s at Tacoma Mall. Enjoyed cooking, gardening, camping, and all her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband, Arnold Kammeyer, and children, Lori A. Allison, Christine D. (Aaron) Zack, Caren B. Kammeyer, Stephen L. (Jennifer) Kammeyer; sister Geraldine L. Bailey-Trapp (Bill); brother Philip M. (Bette) Bailey; grandchildren Kevin and Tanner Zack, Haley J. Kammeyer; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and her ornery cat Dusty. A time of visitation will be held Sunday, September 9 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, with services Monday, September 10 at 4:00 pm, at Powers Funeral Home, Puyallup.

Earl W. (Doc) Wood
Earl W. (Doc) Wood was born in Dent, Idaho on April 14, 1917. He passed away at home in University Place on August 19, 2001. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, June; his daughter, Nancy Guthrie (James, Sr.); 2 grandsons, Jim, Jr. (Janelle) and Mike, Sr. (Debra); and 3 great grandchildren, Mike, Mark and Rachelle. Earl was a chiropractor for 20 years, retiring in 1982. His great love was his music with the Elks’ Band and the Afifi Band. A graveside service was held on August 22, 2001 at Calvary Cemetery. Earl’s life will be forever cherished in the hearts of all he touched. We love and miss you so much.

Freda Judd-Gatz
Freda Judd-Gatz, born Oct. 29, 1924, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001. She is survived by six sons, one daughter, 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, two daughters and one son. She will be missed by her family and friends. Memorial services will be held at Fircrest United Methodist Church, 1018 Columbia Ave., Tacoma, 98466 (corner of S. 19th & Pearl), Saturday, Sept. 15th at 11 AM. Reception following. Flowers accepted at church on Friday.

Margaret G. Swanson, born June 25, 1915 in Seattle, WA, passed away peacefully September 6, 2001 in Tacoma. She is survived by son Richard A. Swanson of Denver, CO; daughters Margaret Bradbury of Seattle, Judy Meske of Sumner; son-in-law Arnie Meske; sister Alice Frye of Seattle; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Monday, Sept. 10 from 4-8 p.m. at Tuell- McKee Funeral Home, 2215 Sixth Ave. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 11:00 a.m. at Abbey View Cemetery, Seattle. Arrangements by Tuell- McKee Funeral Home, 272-1414.

Margaret Louise Frederick
Margaret Louise Frederick, 76, a resident of Olympia, WA, died Thursday, September 6, 2001 at Capital Medical Center. Margaret was born August 24, 1925 in Tacoma, WA to Paul and Ellen Berg. She married Leslie P. Frederick, November 10, 1948 in Tacoma. They were married for 42 years before his death on December 14, 1990. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be missed by her children Barbara Hannah (Bob), Carol Knudson, Dave Frederick, Greg Frederick, Nina Addis (Mark), Karen Olson (Eric), Keith Frederick; her grandchildren Erik Knudson (Jana), Craig Hannah, Mark Hannah, Brandon Frederick, Jeremiah Olson (Dejah), Kory Frederick, Angie Olson, Daniel Frederick, Josh Olson, Brittney Addis, Kendra Addis; her great- grandchildren, Grey Hannah, Allyssa Olson-Lucas, Karissa Olson and Anika Knudson. She is also survived by brothers Richard and Rodney Berg, and sisters Evelyn Erdman and Marilyn Garrison. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 11, 2001, 11:00 a.m. at the 1002 South Yakima Avenue Chapel. Viewing will be at the funeral home Monday, September 10, 2001, 12:00 until 8:30 p.m. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Gaffney Cassedy Allen and Buckley King.

Mary Reda Nelson
Mary Reda Nelson was the youngest of ten children, born to Lewis Major and Edith Pearl Thompson on December 11, 1926 in Centralia Kansas, and passed into the hands of our Lord on September 5, 2001 in Tacoma, Washington after a short illness. She moved to Puyallup as a teenager and graduated from Puyallup High School, and worked at Martins Confectionery in downtown Puyallup for a number of years. She moved to Tacoma and spent many years working at Steve’s Gay Nineties. Her life was filled with people and she was always happy to take care of not only her own family, but anyone who needed help. She is survived by a special friend, Raymond Boutwell of Tacoma, WA; children Sally Graves of Tacoma, WA, Edwin Reda of Tacoma, WA, Tony Reda of Spanaway, WA; two sisters, Sue Sanders of Lakewood, WA and Matilda Moyer of Centralia, Kansas; stepsons Gerald Reda of Tacoma, WA, Lewis Reda of Union City, CA, Michael Nelson of Sumner, WA, stepdaughter Peggy Anderson of Vancouver, WA; seventeen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by son Marvin “Skeeter” Drew, and husband Tony Reda and Eino Nelson. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, September 10, 2001 at 11 AM in the Garden Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home. In lieu or flowers, please make donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or the Parkinson’s Association.

Smith; granddaughters Nicollette Knight, DeJeune and Ilse Craft, grandson Jeremy Blackman (Fritz); son-in-law Reginald Blackman; brother and sister-in-law Heinz and Gretel Pickenhain of Soligen, Germany; cousins Ingo and Giselle of New Jersey, Dr. Joachin and Dr. Maria Rauch of Gera, Germany. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, September 10, 2001 at Mountain View Celebration of Life Center. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home, 584-0252.

Edwin C. (Red) Jones
Red Jones, 89, passed away September 1, 2001. He was born in Fairhaven, Minnesota. Red was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302 for 57 years. He worked as a heavy equipment operator. Red’s work in construction took him to North Africa and to the North Slope of Alaska. He was always willing to lend a friend or neighbor a helping hand. Red is survived by his stepdaughter Maryan Keeney of Klamath Falls, Oregon; and stepsons Jerry Michledge of Marysville, Calif., and Gerry Coons of Tacoma. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, 9/8/01 at 4 PM at Gaffney Funeral Home, 1002 South Yakima Avenue, Tacoma.

Wesley W. Wrye
Wesley W. Wrye, 81, passed away Aug. 28, 2001 in a local hospital. He was born in Tacoma, March 23, 1920. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, he served in World War II. After completing his service time in the Army, he was employed in the City Water Dept. He later retired from there. He is survived by his two sisters, Shirley Larson and Joyce Lane, both of Tacoma; 3 nieces Judy Siler, Tami Larson, both of Tacoma, Pam Dollarhide of Maple Valley. He is also survived by two great nephews, Joe Siler of Tacoma and Jon Bartlett of Silverdale, WA; great nieces Vona Ayuso and Hali Ayuso of Tacoma; great great nephew Jonathan Ayuso Parks of Tacoma. He is also survived by his two special friends, Ron Weeks of Gig Harbor and Pearle Parks of Tacoma. We will all miss him. At his request there will be no services.

Age 48, a resident of Puyallup, lost his battle with cancer on September 3, 2001. He was born April 5, 1953 in Walla Walla, WA. He was a graduate of Puyallup High School. His father, Clayton, preceded him in death. Richard is survived by his wife Janet and children Melissa and Nicholas, all of Puyallup, mother Barbara Stevens of Auburn, brother Michael (Kerri) Robberson of Puyallup, and several other loving family members and friends. Memorial services will be held Monday, September 10th at 11:00 am, Powers Funeral Home, Puyallup.

There will be viewing at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Renton, Sept. 7th between 3-4 p.m., and services at Church of the Resurrection, Bellevue, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. The family requests contributions to the NW Kidney Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Visitation at Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home, Saturday at 9 AM, with Memorial service at Calvary Baptist Church at 11:15 AM.
