Arthur (Art) B. Gollahon
Art Gollahon, 80, died September 5, 2001. He was born December 15, 1920. Art was the former owner of Art’s Hamburgers on Pacific Avenue. As The News Tribune’s Bart Ripp described in 1995, “One of Tacoma’s primo visuals is Art’s resolute red and yellow front guarded by a thicket of potted cedars and an armada of signs advertising coffee and burgers. Art’s had nine stools, a galaxy of punchcards and pull tabs, and a unique policy of charging for coffee refills. If you wanted water with your burger, Art pointed to the drinking fountain.” Nevertheless, Art had a loyal clientele. In 1988, when the Tacoma Spur bypassed his business, The News Tribune quoted Art’s attitude, “If you run your business right, customer will always find you.” Art operated Art’s Hamburgers for 41 years until 1995, when doctors told him his heart could fail at any time. He fooled them. Art moved to Harborview Manor Retirement Community, where he flirted with all the sweet darlin’s until he met his special darling, Rosabelle Orr. Art and Rose became inseparable. Rose and her family want to express their appreciation to the folks at the Veterans’ Hospital in Lakewood. The care they provided Art was superb. Art will be buried at the Tahoma National Cemetery. At Art’s request, there will be no services.
