ROBERT BUSH KARMAN
(A Man of God)
Robert Bush Karman, 84, went to be with the Lord on September 16, 2001. He was born on August 4, 1917, in Kalamazoo, MI. Bob is survived by Ione, his wife of 60 years; his four sons, Gary (Sally) Karman, Seattle; Neal (Linda) Karman, Lake Stevens; Doug (Judy) Karman, Olympia; Ken (Judith) Karman, Tacoma; 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Bill, Crystal, Michele, Scott, John, Tammy, Bethany, Debbie, and Timothy and 5 great-grandchildren, Brady, Caeden, Brian, Solon and Skylar; and many other loving family members. Bob and Ione were married on June 14, 1941, at Oberlin Congregational Church in Steilacoom (”’till death do us part”). Bob was a graduate of Stadium High School and Knapp Business College. He was a member of Oberlin Congregational Church for 41 years and a member of U.P. Presbyterian Church for 33 years. He served as deacon, elder, building committee member, Sunday school teacher and many other positions in these churches. Bob was on the Steilacoom School Board for 30 years. He served for 20 years on the Pierce County and regional school committees for school district organization. Bob served on the Steilacoom Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years and retired as Deputy Chief. Bob was a member of the Tahoma Dance Club and Swinging Squares Dance Club. Bob was employed for 50 years at Macdonald Building Company as a construction /estimator, retiring in 1986. Some of the projects he managed were Tacoma General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, University of Puget Sound, County City Building, Tobey Jones Ret. Estates, Charles Wright Academy, Annie Wright Seminary, and other major buildings/remodels in the Tacoma, Pierce County area. After retirement, Bob and Ione traveled by motor home and enjoyed several winters in Mesa, AZ. A Celebration Service of Bob’s life will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2001, at University Place Presbyterian Church, 8101 27th St. West, at 3:00 PM. William J. Finnegan “Candyman”
William J. Finnegan, 71, beloved husband of Marlis Finnegan, passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 in the Mt. View Celebration of Life Building, Aspen Chapel. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home, 584-0252.

William S. Johnson (Bill)
CMSGT, USAF Retired
William S. Johnson passed away September 16, 2001 at the age of 71. Bill was born in Roubaix, South Dakota on December 16, 1929. He resided in the Puyallup area the past 35 years. Bill served for 21 years in the U.S. Air Force as a Maintenance Technician. He took part in the Berlin Airlift, Korean War and Viet Nam. He retired in 1969. Bill then worked as a LSM Supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service for 21 years. Camping, fishing, and walking were some of his favorite pastimes. He truly enjoyed going for coffee with “The Gang”. Bill shared a wonderful sense of humor and had a contagious laugh. He was a member of Puyallup Eagles 2308 and the Air Force Sergeant's Club. He leaves behind his loving wife, Mary, of 28 years; daughters, Tammy Creelman (David), Debbra Nelson (Russ), and Dianna Fritz (Fred) and son, Larry Johnson (Sandy). Daughter Beverly preceded him in death. Bill had three brothers, two sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a dearly loved grandfather of six and had one great-grandchild. Services will be Saturday, September 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Puyallup. Viewing will be held Friday from 12:00 to 5:00. Interment with full military honors at Woodbine Cemetery.

Clayton Dean Lars Beckstrom
Age 32, originally of Tacoma, passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, succumbing to a long illness. He is survived by his wife Sarah, his 3 children, Alena, Andrew and Clayton Jr., all of WI; his parents, Howard and Janet Beckstrom of CA; 5 sisters, Holly, Becky, Jody, Stacey and Jennifer; 2 brothers, Stewart and Nels Beckstrom, all of Tacoma; 19 nieces and nephews. Clayton was loved dearly by all who knew him and will be missed terribly. Private services will be held for family and friends.

Albert G. Schneider
Albert G. Schneider was born Aug. 18, 1907 in Elysian, MN. He passed away Sept. 15, 2001 at his home in Lakewood, WA. Albert, raised in Timberlake, SD; relocated to Washington in 1933 and married Eileen O’Neil in 1935. He was employed by Safeway grocery for over 25 years. After retiring from Safeway, he built and owned Cheerio Motel in Lakewood until his retirement in 1976. He loved gardening and sharing his vegetables and flowers with others. Preceded in death by his wife Eileen, Albert is survived by his children, Mary Louise Fox of Renton, WA, Robert F. Schneider of Tacoma, WA, Patricia A. Barr of Auburn, WA; along with 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Services are 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001 in Mt. View Garden Chapel. Interment in Mt. View Memorial Park. Eugene R. Oboy
Born April 25, 1935, died Sept. 15, 2001. He was born in East Chicago, IN, and has been in the Spanaway area since 1974 after he retired from the US Air Force. He was a volunteer at Fire District #21 in Graham. He served as Fire Commissioner District #21 for 2 years. He was a volunteer for Pioneer Valley Elementary School. He dearly loved helping children and everybody. He is survived by his wife, Joanna Oboy; his children, June Marie Crain, Edward Oboy, Pamela Kay Oboy and Mike Oboy; stepchildren Lester Egnew, Herbert Egnew and Daniel Egnew; and his 16 grandchildren. He was a member of Pioneer Valley Southern Baptist Church. Memorial services will be held at South Hill Baptist Church, 7914 112th St. in Puyallup, Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at 4:30 PM. Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday at Fir Lane Funeral Chapel in Spanaway, 1:00 PM-7:00 PM.

Nettie Edith Ihlen
Born Nettie Edith Norris on 8-29-15 in Washington County, Kansas, Nettie E. Ihlen died on 9-16-01 at Heartwood Extended Health Care in Tacoma, WA. She married Norman Kenneth Ihlen 9-26-41. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Kenneth Ihlen, on 12-8-96, and her brothers, Harvey C. Norris and John W. Norris. Her hobbies included bingo, crocheting, sewing, quilting, and collecting salt and pepper shakers. She is survived by sons Harold L. Roll (Lois), Stanley, Virginia; Larry D. Ihlen (Diane), Puyallup, WA; Curtis L. Ihlen (Cathy), Tacoma, WA; Gary B. Ihlen (Lois), Tacoma, WA; Richard L. Ihlen, Tacoma, WA; daughter Evelyn N. (maiden name Roll) Zablotney, Minot, ND; brother Ivan W. Nonis, Floodwood, MN; sisters Alma M. Bandy (Norris), Fort Smith, AK; Mildred M. Crawford, Fort Smith, AK; Thelma R. Koivisto, Minneapolis, MN; 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held TODAY , September 18, 2001 in the Mt. View Garden Chapel. Richard V. Shaver
Born Nov. 2, 1932 in Spokane, WA, passed away Sept. 13, 2001 in Seattle, WA. He attended Clover Park High School in Lakewood. He served in the Navy for 20 years and was a Vietnam veteran. After retiring from the Navy, Dick worked for Foss Tug. He was a former resident of DuPont, and spent his last years in Pe Ell. He was a member of the Veterans Memorial Museum in Centralia, VFW Post #5522, American Legion Post #3409, and the Naval Fleet Reserve Assn. He is survived by sisters Delia (Jack) Lloyd, Roberta Swan, Carolyn (Arnie) Joringdal, and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Josie, and parents Lloyd and Miriam Shaver. Memorial services will be held Sept. 22, 2 PM, at the Veterans Museum, 712 W. Main, Centralia, WA 98531. Contributions may be made to the Veterans Museum.

Calvin O. Gardner
Calvin O. Gardner, son of Wayne and Fujiko Gardner, was born in Tacoma, October 31, 1958 and passed away on September 13, 2001. He graduated from Lakes High School in 1977 and attended Fort Steilacoom Community College where he served as head women’s volleyball coach for two years. Calvin was a Boeing employee for over fifteen years and recently at Arca Xytec Systems, Inc. He enjoyed fishing and participating in many sports; as a player, coach, or official. He is survived by his parents in Lakewood; sisters, Midori Foster (Jeff) of Quartz Hill, CA and Mari Larsen (Eric) of Shelton, WA; one nephew, Brawny Larsen; five nieces, Stephanie Roork, Kelsea and Mandi Larsen, Kristen and Danielle Foster, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 22, 1:00 PM at Lakeview Congregational Church, 4606 - 108th SW, Lakewood, WA. Burial at Evergreen- Washelli in Seattle will take place at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to Lakeview Congregational Church.

David R. Johnson
David R. Johnson (svenska pojke), 54, passed away last week at home. He was born and lived his life in Tacoma. A 1965 graduate from Wilson High School he attended community college in Longview. He will be remembered for his kind manner and wonderful sense of humor, always being able to bring a smile to someone's life. David is survived by his parents, Ernie and Mary Johnson of Lacey, his sister Lennae (Holm) and Rick of Olympia, his youngest sister Nancy (Nelson), and Jack of Shelton. David is also survived by a son, Marc Rosewood, of Ashland, Oregon. A gathering of family and friends will be held at his parents home in Lacey on Friday, September 21 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Please feel free to come share your memories.

Irene M. Bortle
Irene M. Bortle, 92, passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2001. She was born in Issaquah, WA and lived in Tacoma for most of her life. After graduation from Lincoln High School, she worked for the phone company, then Rhodes Dept. Store until she took early retirement to travel the world with her husband of 52 years, Carold, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her brother, John Hines of Kirkland, WA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services 10 AM, Thursday in the Mt. View Garden Chapel. Lars Kleiven
Lars Kleiven passed from this life into eternal life, Sept. 11, 2001. He was born Sept. 28, 1901, in Naustdal, Norway, and immigrated to America in 1922 with his brother Martin. Though he never returned to his homeland, he retained a love for it, as well as for those he left behind. Several visits from Norwegian relatives were much enjoyed. Lars lived a simple but good and long life, retaining a strong, clear mind to the end. He was a hard worker in logging and the lumber business most of his life, along with farm duties at home, in Roy, WA with his wife Mabel. In later years gardening, fishing, and horse racing were enjoyed. He is survived and loved by sister Astrid Midttun in Norway; daughter Luanne (Stan) Naef; sons, Roy (Jan) and Donald; grandchildren, Pamela (Larry) Keenan, Paula (Patrick) Martin, Lance, Jon and Todd Kleiven; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Madeline, Amy and Laura (AKA the little rascal), and several nieces and nephews in the USA and Norway. Also survived by brother-in-law and long time working companion Henry (Bertha) Anderson. Lars requested that no formal services be held, however the family will have a private ceremony. The family wishes to thank the Tacoma Lutheran Home for their loving care during his last days. Fir Lane Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mary Margaret Coghe
Mary Margaret Coghe, born October 4, 1918, peacefully went to God on September 16, 2001. She was born in Waterbury, CT to Margaret and William J. Mungavin. She retired from the City of Tacoma Police Department and was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Mary loved to travel. Mary is survived by her loving husband, Robert, of 52 years. She dedicated her love and life to her family and four children, Marilyn Whiton, Tacoma; Robert Masterson (Kari), Vashon Island; Arlene DeCoursey (Gary), Graham and Nancy Coghe, Everett. She will be remembered dearly by her five grandsons, one granddaughter and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Gloria McCauley, two nieces, a nephew and many friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 19, 2001, 11:00 a.m. at the Calvary Cloisters Chapel. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Nancy L. Magnus
Nancy L. Magnus was born July 20, 1935 in Louisville, KY. Our much loved mother, loving grandmother and best friend passed away on September 16, 2001 in Tacoma, WA. She had a full time job of being totally devoted to her family and talking to them every day. We love her deeply. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
