Dr. William Zigmund Masters
Dr. William Zigmund Masters, dentist, military officer and much loved father, passed away peacefully Monday, September 17, 2001. Bill was born January 10, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois. While not a celebrity or financial wizard, in many ways he personified the American ideal of self-determination. He was the third child born to Lithuanian immigrants, Boleslaw and Alexandra Mostowicz and grew up during the Great Depression. The frugality and resourcefulness he learned as a child served him well for the remainder of his life. No matter how dire the circumstances of a situation, he remained an optimist. His favorite phrase was, “The best is yet to come!” Like many of his generation, he pursued a career in the military in order to attend college. He enlisted in the Army and served during WWII and the Korean War. Later he joined the Air Force and graduated from Northwestern University School of Dentistry. In light of his academic standing, he was inducted as a member of the American Board of Prosthodontics. In 1956, while serving as the Chief of Dental Services at Orlando Air Force Base, he met and married Carol Hoffner. Together they raised four daughters and a son and opened their home to countless friends. (Another favorite saying: “The more, the merrier.”) Bill’s military service took the family to England; Alabama; and finally McChord Air Force Base, Washington. At each posting Bill headed the Air Base’s Dental Operations. In 1971, Bill retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. As a civilian, Bill established a successful dental practice in Lakewood. He also purchased and refurbished a local riding stable in order to accommodate his family’s interest in show jumping. Though only a casual rider, he was a virtuoso of barn and vehicle repair, often remarking, “There isn’t anything I can’t fix with a little duct tape.” Aside from watching his children compete, his favorite pastimes were golf and socializing. His wit and dancing skills were legendary. Bill is survived by his two sisters, Charlotte Martin and Felicia Masters of Chicago, IL; his wife of 45 years, Carol Hoffner Masters; daughters, Christine Ryser (Eugene) of Olympia; Tamara Masters (Jennifer Hansen) of Lakewood; Shaina Humphrey (Lance) of Granby, MA; and Nicole Masters (Dan) of San Francisco, CA; and son, Boleslaw Masters of Portland, OR. He had two granddaughters (Eloise Ryser and Madelaine Humphrey) and three grandsons (Gheorghe Ryser and Charles and Maxton Humphrey). He had a strong affection for his extended family members, Merry Beth Farrington, Pullman; and Katie Mayfield, Boise, ID. Memorial services will be held at 3 PM on Wednesday, September 26 in the Mountain View Aspen Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Alzheimer’s Disease Research, 15825 Shady Grove Rd., Suite 140, Rockville, MD 20850.
