Olivia Loretta Tonnemaker
Olivia Loretta Tonnemaker, 89, a resident of Gig Harbor since 1973, died Easter Sunday, April 12, 1998. She was born April 4, 1909 in Grafton, WI. At the age of nine, she moved via railroad from the family dairy farm on Lake Michigan to Zillah, WA, in the Yakima Valley. The family homesteaded, planted a fruit orchard that became the Clausing Fruit Packing Co. Olivia attended Whitman College and graduated in 1931 with a degree in mathematics. She was captain of the girl's basketball team and a sorority member. She taught math and typing at Tieton High School. In 1935 Olivia married Robin B. Tonnemaker of Sunnyside, WA. They later moved to Seattle where they were in the hardware business together. In 1962 they moved to University Place, where they also owned and operated a hardware business. Olivia began working for the State of Washington in 1965, retiring in 1975. She was responsible for qualifying and licensing nursing homes on the Olympic Peninsula. She worked as a Red Cross volunteer in the Gig Harbor area, assisting other senior citizens with health insurance and other financial matters. Olivia was a member of the First Christian Church in Tacoma and was a master seamstress, gardener, and enjoyed camping and hiking. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robin; daughter Julie Marie Ridgeway, both of Gig Harbor; son Duane Tonnemaker, Belfair; 3 granddaughters, 2 grandsons; several nieces and nephews; her sister-in-law, Celia Clausing, Grafton, WI. The family is grateful for the comforting care Olivia recieved at Cottesmore Nursing Home in Gig Harbor. Visitation prior to the service from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral service 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 1998 at Haven of Rest Funeral Home, Hwy. 16, Gig Harbor.

Patricia (Middleton) Orr
Patricia F. Orr, 50, lost her courageous battle with cancer on April 12, 1998 in Tacoma. Pat was a lifetime resident of the Tacoma area, attending St. Patrick's School, Aquinas Academy, and Central Washington State College. She taught school for the Archdiocese of Seattle for 27 years, spending the past 20 years teaching first grade at St. Charles Borromeo School. She was a past member of the Junior League and the Tacoma Art Museum Activities Council. She was also a member of the Tacoma Chapter of S.T.U.D.'s. Pat is survived by her husband, Jack Orr, Tacoma; children Amy (Brent) Sommerseth, Edmonds, and Beth Orr, Tacoma; parents Harry and Flavia Middleton, Gig Harbor; sister Eileen Bradshaw, Lynnwood; brother John Middleton, Bellevue; granddaughter Emma Sommerseth; nieces Cheralyn and Casey; nephews Brian, Steve, Brett and Brad; many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother, Anna May Middleton. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, April 16, 1998, 11:00 am at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. A Vigil will be Wednesday, April 15, 1998, 7:00 pm at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Interment at Haven of Rest cemetery. The family suggests memorials may be made in Pat's memory to the St. Charles School - Patricia Orr Memorial Fund at 7112 S. 12th, Tacoma, WA 98465; or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Pat's family wishes to express its thanks to her friends and the entire St. Charles community for their love, prayers and support during her illness, and for the kind and gentle care provided by Dr. Frank Senecal, his staff, and the nurses and staff at St. Joseph Hospital. Robert A. Young
Robert A. Young, 82, died April 12, 1998. He was born in Maytown, WA, and was a long time Tacoma resident. Bob was an avid bowler at Pacific Lanes. Survivors include his son, Ray (Mary) Young; his daughter, Sharon Young; six grandchildren, Gerald, Marsha, Terri, William, Margie, Jason; 5 great grandchildren, Ashley, Samantha, Nicholas, Joshua, Scott; and a brother, Arthur Young. Robin, 53, is survived by his wife, Rita; mother and father, James and Betty James; brothers Richard, Mark and Dan James; aunt and uncle, Georgiani and Michael Battle; uncle Harold Isbell. Ruth I. Olson
Ruth I. Olson, 81, Yakima, died Thursday, April 9, 1998 at Summitview Health Care Center. Ruth was born in Kelliher, MN, on Dec. 22, 1916 to Everett and Gertrude Cain. She was raised and received her education in Minnesota, and later attended business college in Syracuse, NY. She was later married to Laven G. Olson. Mr. and Mrs. Olson moved to the Seattle-Tacoma area in about 1946, where they have lived most of their lives. Ruth worked with child support enforcement for the State of Washington for 20 years before she retired. Survivors include a daughter, Ilene Rust and her husband Tim of Naches, WA; two sons, Doug Olson and his wife Kathleen of Puyallup, WA, and Ronald Olson and his wife Linda of Jonesboro, AR; six grandchildren, Shanon, Steven, Holly, Gregory, Sarah and David; a great grandson, Austin; many nieces and nephews, including Bev Julian. She was preceded in death by her husband, Laven G. Olson, as well as two sisters and one brother. Memorial services were held Monday, April 13, 1998 at the Naches Presbyterian Church. Keith and Keith Funeral Home, Yakima, is in charge of arrangements.

Sally G. Shager
Sally G. Shager, 90, passed away on April 11, 1998 in Tacoma. She was a long time resident of Washington. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bert Shager, and is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Westfall of Cocoa, FL; her brother, George Lien of Minnesota; and two stepdaughters, Joyce Ilenstine of Santa Barbara, CA, and Dolly Beth Shager of Olympia, WA. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Eric and Richard Westfall of California and Carol Compton of Florida, and nine great grandchildren. Her passion was gardening and she was a long time member of the IAM wives and a faithful member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tacoma. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 14, 1998 from 4 PM to 9 PM. Alfred L. Finch
"When an old man dies a Library is lost"
Alfred L. Finch, 91, passed peacefully in his sleep, June 29, 1998 at his daughter's home in Tacoma. He was born in Odessa, Missouri, on November 2, 1906. He is survived by his daughter, Allene Mogensen of Tacoma; his son Alvin and daughter-in-law Rosie Finch of Petaluma, CA; stepchildren Gloria Atkinson and Ed Dalquist of Marysville, WA; half-sister Luella Bailey of Colville, WA; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He retired from Longshore Union, Local 19 in 1972 and then gave his full attention to the fishing and hunting he so loved. He was a long time resident of Pont Defiance Village. He was dearly loved by his family and friends, and he will be greatly missed. At his request no services will be held. Please send remembrances to the charity of your choice.
