Iona F. Conaway
Iona F. Conaway (Nee: Powers), 83 years of age, died April 6, 1998. She was born in Coleraine, MN, and resided many years in Tacoma. She was a devoted member of the O.E.S. Faith Chapter #255. Iona was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Claire L. Conaway. Survivors include nieces Edwina (Leo) Kalkiewicz of Oak Creek, WI, Erlane (Mark) Kosanovich of Alborn, MN, Marion DoBransky of Hot Springs, AR; nephew Kenneth (Barbara) Sawyer of Duluth, MN; several great nieces and nephews; very special friends Homer and Norma Davis. Iona was a loving, caring person and will be sadly missed by her many friends. Many thanks to the staff of the Franciscan Hospice Center, who gave Iona much love and tender care. Visitation will be held Wednesday, 4pm to 8pm, with Funeral Services Thursday, 1:00 p.m., all at Dryer Mortuary Chapel.

Katherine Challender
Born in South Dakota, Dec. 25, 1894, Katherine passed away peacefully in Spokane, WA, April 6, 1998 at the age of 103. For the past 6 years, Franklin Hill Health Center in Spokane was her home. A long time resident of Lakewood, WA, Katherine retired from American Lake Veterans Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis (Harold) Challender, brother Alphouso Grandgenet, sisters Betty Smith and Mary Gaston. Surviving her is a sister, Barbara Nichols and son Lyle; numerous nieces and nephews, including Mary Karlaman of Enumclaw, WA, Ina Blaine of Canada, and Melvin Challender and wife Ruth of Tacoma, who have been long time caregivers of Katherine. Viewing will be Thursday 4/9/1998 from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm at Mt. View Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Friday 4/10/1998 at 1:30 pm at Mt. View Memorial Park, Tacoma. Keith E. Knutson
Keith E. Knutson, 45, of Tacoma, died April 3, 1998, after an extended illness. He was born August 26, 1952, and attended Mason Jr. High and Stadium High Schools. After attending classes at Western Washington College, Keith spent several years working for the Mt. Rainier Park Service. He is survived by his father, Lloyd; brothers Jim of Centralia, Kirk of Tacoma, and Eric of Seattle; sister Neva Dunham of Enumclaw; four nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Knutson. A Memorial Service will be held at The Jefferson House Care Center, 1748 Jefferson Ave., Tacoma on Saturday, April 11 at 10:30 A.M. Lawrence L. Welborn
June 4, 1942 - April 6, 1998
Lawrence (Larry) Lee Welborn, 55, of Tacoma, passed away on April 6, 1998 due to complications with Leukemia. He was born to Kenneth and Della Welborn in Everett, WA, on June 4, 1942. He graduated from Lake Stevens High School in 1960. Larry began his career with Pitney Bowes in April 1961 and retired in late 1997 due to health complications. In 1963 he joined the Washington State National Guard and served for six years. In 1963 he met his wife, Carol Purdy, and later married in 1966. Larry enjoyed travel, computers and sports and was looking forward to his retirement by traveling around the country with his wife. Survivors include his loving wife, Carol Welborn; two sons, Craig and Jason; his daughter-in-law, Rhonda; five brothers, Keith, Leonard, Gary, Jack and Kurt; his beloved dog, Peaches; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. There will be no formal services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America.

Marvin J. Augustus
Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather
Marvin J. Augustus, age 69, a long time Tacoma resident, passed away on Monday, April 6, 1998. Born in Akron, Ohio, he came to Washington state in 1947 while serving in the U.S. Navy and resided there. Marvin was employed by Atlas Foundry in Tacoma and retired in 1984 from Long Foundry in Hoquium, WA. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard Dale Augustus, who passed away in 1954. Surviving family members include his wife, Helen M. Augustus of Tacoma; four children, Robert M. Augustus, Janet D. Goedecke, Karen S. Batchelor, all of Ocean Shores, WA, Linda R. Gandee of Tacoma. Also surviving are brothers Melvin, Richard, Harold and Jack Augustus, all of Ohio, William Augustus of CA; a sister, Elenore Schumacher of CA; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Thomas Edward Spencer
Thomas Edward Spencer, a lifelong Pierce County resident, died April 6, 1998 at his home in Sumner after a long illness. He was born August 11, 1916 in Dieringer, WA, to Thomas J. and Eleanor (Montrose) Spencer. He was raised in Sumner and graduated from Sumner High School in 1933. Thomas worked as a merchant seaman most of his life, attending various Maritime schools. He was a member Master, Mates and Pilots Association; Merchant Marine Veteran of W.W.II; sailed with Alaska Steamship Co. for many years, pioneering containerized freight to coastal Alaskan ports. He retired from active Merchant Marine duty as a deck officer in 1981. In 1964 he built his home at Lake Tapps, where he resided until his death. After retirement, he enjoyed golf and friends while wintering in Borrego Springs, CA. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and family outings. He was a member of the Puyallup Elks #1450 and St. Andrews Catholic Church of Sumner. Thomas is survived by his wife, Genevieve; 2 sons, Ted and Tim of Sumner; 2 daughters, Genevieve McIlrath of Sumner, and Georgia Spencer of Omak, WA; 1 brother, Larry Spencer of Seattle; 1 sister, Mary Nuttall of Olympia; 14 grandchildren. Preceded in death by two sons, Thomas E. Spencer Jr. and Terry Spencer. A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, April 8, 1998 at 12 PM at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sumner. Willis Christensen
Willis was born in Seattle, WA, on November 15, 1908 to Winifred and Andrew L. Christensen. He passed away April 3, 1998 in Tacoma, WA. He attended Warren Grade School and graduated form Queen Ann High School, Seattle in 1928. Member of Masons Greenwood Lodge #253. A 50 year member of Amaranth Rainbow Court #66 (four times Past Royal Patron), Order of Eastern Star Occidental #28 (Past Worthy Patron twice) and Woodmen of the World. Past member of the Puget Sound Maritime Society and the Steamer Virginia V Foundation. Willis retired in 1973 from Seattle City Light after 32 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, older brothers Earl and Phillip, his twin brother Wallace, and his sister Ruth. His wife of 64 years, Gertrude, passed away on February 26, 1998. He is survived by his son, Dr. Paul Christensen, D.D.S.; daughter Gail (Robert) Goodman; grandchildren Ross Goodman and Jody (Goodman) Hardwick; and 4 great-grandsons. Aline Scott Buchanan, 94, died April 6, 1998. Mrs. Buchanan was born in Washington, DC, and had lived in Tacoma since 1943. She was married to Joe Henry Buchanan for 60 years before his death. Edna E. (Bamford) Erickson
Edna Erickson entered into rest April 3, 1998 in Spokane, WA. Formerly of Tacoma, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.J. Erickson, in 1967. She attended The Little Church on The Prairie and was very active in the women's organizations. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Whitcomb and her husband Sam, Spokane, WA; son John Bamford Erickson and wife JoAnn, Seattle, WA; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Eva Larson, 63, passed away April 4, 1998 in Puyallup. She was born Oct. 9, 1934 in Milton, FL, and had been a Puyallup resident for the last 2 years. Eva is survived by her husband, Daniel J.
