Miss Ruth Jenkins
Born in Ketchikan, AK, to missionary parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Thomas Jenkins, in 1903. Later moved to Skagway, AK, and eventually lived in Ohio, Oregon, Hawaii and Reno, NV, where her father was the Episcopal bishop. Educated at St. Helen's Hall, Fort- land, she entered Reed College and graduated from the University of Oregon, with graduate study at Mills College and the University of Puget Sound. After teaching in public and private schools in Oregon, Idaho, and Hawaii, she returned to assist her father in the Diocese of Nevada, as an executive of the church summer camp at Lake Tahoe and as executive secretary and treasurer for the diocese from 1929 to 1942. In 1942, she was appointed headmistress of The Annie Wright Seminary, Tacoma, WA, where she remained for 21 years; held a similar position at The Bishop's School, La Jolla, CA, for 8 years until her retirement in 1971, when she was honored by the Board of Trustees in her election as Headmistress Emeritus of The Bishop's School. Miss Jenkins held many positions in local, provincial, and national organizations of the Episcopal Church. In Tacoma she was the first woman to be elected to the vestry of her church. In 1949 she was elected by her diocese to the position of lay deputy to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, but was denied a seat because she was a woman. It was 20 years before women were seated in the General Convention. In 1952, while headmistress of The Annie Wright Seminary, Miss Jenkins was awarded an honorary L.H.D. (Doctor of Humane Letters) by the University of Puget Sound for her "leadership in the community, the Episcopal Church, and Independent Education." In 1955, Miss Jenkins was awarded the Bishop's Cross at the Diocesan Convention by the Rt. Rev. Stephen F. Bayne, then Bishop of Olympia, "for outstanding service to the Church in restoring the diocesan school for girls, The Annie Wright Seminary, to a position of strength and renewal." In 1977, The Church Divinity School of the Pacific awarded to Miss Jenkins its first honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity given to a woman by that institution. The citation reads: "For 51 years the Church has benefited from Ruth Jenkins' skills as teacher, administrator, and lay leader. But to the many hundreds of women who have been her students, and with whom she has always kept in touch, Ruth has given much more. Minister to a far-flung parish, she has been counselor, pastor, and friend. She demanded of all her students a high standard of excellence. With dignity and grace she set an example of service to people, zest for life, and love of God. For loyalty and devotion, Ruth is a credit to her Old Testament namesake." Survivors include 2 sisters, Marian Jenkins of La Jolla and Joanna J. Hall of Indianapolis. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Services will be held at St. James-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, La Jolla, at 4 p.m. Monday, April 13. Memorials may be made to The Ruth Jenkins Scholarship Fund of The Annie Wright School, Tacoma, WA; or The Oregon Episcopal School Scholarship Fund for Clergy Children, Portland, OR.
