Bittick, Alice Marie
Alice Marie Bittick age 89 of Chewelah, WA died on Wednesday, July 19, 2000 at Spokane, WA and was born on March 22, 1911 at Palouse, WA. Survivors include Son Bill Bittick Palm Desert, CA Son Jim Bittick Spokane, WA . 2 grand daughters , and 1 great grandson. Alice has been in Chewelah since 1951. She and her husband Chilton had Bittick Chevrolet in Chewelah. Alice kept the books for the business. After her husband's death in 1970, she closed the dealership. In the early 1930's, Alice played piano in a band in the Palouse area. She was a member of the Nile Club, P.E.O., and the Chewelah Woman's Club. Alice enjoyed traveling around the world, bowling, golf, cooking, and sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Art Hunsperger in 1984.. Survivors include Husband, Vern Claflin, Spokane, WA; Son, Dan Claflin, Waitts Lake, WA; Daughter, Joy Claflin, Spokane, WA; Brother, Bill Warren, Deer Lodge, MT; Brother, Newell Warren, Thompson Falls, MT; Sister, Edith Enger, Missoula, MT; Grandson, Andrew Claflin, Spokane, WA. Vern married Clariece Warren September 29, 1940 at Spokane, Washington. They moved to Jump Off Joe in 1946 and then to Waitts Lake in 1955. They moved to Spokane in March of 1998. Vern and Clariece attended the United Church of Christ at Chewelah. Clariece was a very family oriented person. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, knitting, and sewing. She worked for Spray's Laundry and Pacific Trail, both of Chewelah, and a nursing home in Colville. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Valley Grange, Rebekah Lodge at Chewelah, Ladies VFW Auxiliary #6963, and St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary. Irene enjoyed her grandchildren, great grand children, great great grandchildren, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and flowers. She especially enjoyed the functions of the Rebekah Lodge. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Shorty, 2 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 2 brothers, and 1 sister. Charles "Merle" Merlin Crockett age 59 of Summit Valley, WA died on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at Addy, WA and was born on February 2, 1940 at Colville, WA. Survivors include Father, Charles Crockett, Auburn, WA; Mother, Phyllis Crockett, Deer Park, WA; Son, Shawn Crockett, Deer Park, WA; Daughter, Jodi Guinvarch, Marina, CA; Brother, Mel Crockett, Klamath Falls, OR; Sister, Kathy Grinager, Auburn, WA; Sister, Charlene Larison, Springfield, OR. and 2 grandchildren. Merle graduated from Marcus High School in 1957. He received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Washington State University in 1962 and his M.S. in business administration in 1966. Merle worked in the electrical engineering field. He enjoyed hunting, gunsmithing, fishing, and working with horses. Merle was a member of the National Rifle Association. Winfield "Win" Crawford Cook age 97 of Chewelah, WA died on Monday, May 10, 1999 at Chewelah, WA and was born on October 20, 1901 at Lamont, WA. Survivors include Wife Helen Cook Chewelah, WA Daughter Judy & husband Gary Bean Chewelah, WA Daughter Dana & husband Dave Thacher Shelton, WA Daughter Valdine & husband Earl Whetzel Mead, WA Sister Frankie Veum Chewelah, WA 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Win came to the Chewelah area in 1920 with his family on a cattle drive from the Sprague area. He married Helen Bussard June 6, 1929 at Spokane. Win farmed in the Chewelah area until he retired in 1975. He was a life member of the Grange and volunteered at the museum at Chewelah. Win enjoyed horses and made cinches and riding crops. He also enjoyed gardening, picking huckleberries, and hunting. Win and Helen had some special people they considered their children, Forrest & Mary Jane Hart, Bob Blomgren, and Keith & Norma Kirkingburg.. Survivors include Husband Melvin Camus Chewelah, WA Son John M. Camus Lake Quinault, WA Daughter Catherine J. Hinds Ocean Shores, WA Daughter Aurelia M. Rose Amanda Park, WA Daughter Anna M. Potvin Chewelah, WA Daughter Alice Boling Fayetteville, AR . Numerous nieces & nephews, 11 grandchildren 8 great-grandchildren. Ruby was the daughter of Adlai and Anna Hummel. She served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1947 during World War II. Ruby married Melvin Camus on March 24, 1951 at Olympia, Washington. She was a member of the Chewelah Womens Bowling Association. Ruby enjoyed playing cards and doing arts and crafts. Mom's greatest joy in life was having family together, especially on the holidays. We all love you mom and you are going to be missed. Cramer Long Beach, CA Son William G. Cramer Koloa, HI Daughter Ruth Yaw Valley, WA Brother Walter W. Cramer Hermiston, OR Sister Anna Lee Chewelah, WA Sister Marie Momb Spokane, WA 4 grandchildren 5 great-grandchildren. Fred was the fourth of eight children born to Fredrich and Anna (Weyerts) Cramer. The family moved to the Cozy Nook area in 1906 and lived in the Chewelah since that time. Fred was a life long member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was known as the Honey Man, providing honey for canning during the sugar rationing years and for eating pleasure until his retirement.. Vern Claflin
Vern Claflin age 82 of Valley, WA died on Thursday, March 9, 2000 at Spokane, WA and was born on March 21, 1917 at Roy, MT. Survivors include Son Dan Claflin Valley, WA Daughter Joy Claflin Spokane, WA Grandson Andrew Claflin Spokane, WA Grand daughter Stacy Claflin Costa Mesa, CA . Vern served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. They farmed in the Jump Off Joe area from 1946 to 1955. They owned and operated the Waitts Lake Resort from 1955 to 1968. Vern also owned a trucking company that hauled silica ore to Lane Mountain Silica Plant, retiring in 1978. Vern and Clariece enjoyed traveling the United States and Mexico. Vern especially enjoyed and loved his family. His wife proceded him in death in 1998.. Elda M. Freeman age 98 of Chewelah, WA died on Friday, May 7, 1999 at Chewelah, WA and was born on February 21, 1901 at Rockford, WA. Survivors include Son Buzz Freeman Spokane, WA, Sister Ethel Wilcher Spokane, WA 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Elda came to the Chewelah Creek area in 1941. She moved to Chewelah town in 1952. In 1993 Elda went in the the Long Term Care Center at Chewelah. She was a member of the Chewelah Creek Association and the Free Methodist Church at Chewelah. Elda taught Sunday School at her church for 20 years. She enjoyed gardening and flowers. Elda was preceded in death by her husband, 2 daughters, and 3 sisters..
