Donald G. Mason
Don was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Forks, Wash. to Walter and Hattie Mason, and died at home in his sleep on March 21, 2015, at age 83. Don was nick named “Tuffie” by neighbors when first moving to Forks at age 5. Don was aggressive and outstanding in football and basketball while attending Forks High School, graduating in 1950 as student body president.
Tuff, as he was called by many relatives and friends, might struggle a bit naming our United States senators, but would have no problem telling someone the batting average and high school attended, of anyone playing professional baseball. He followed football and basketball just as carefully, and we were all continually astounded at his statistical knowledge of so many individuals.
Tuff worked in the woods out of high school until March of 1951 when the Korean War started. He joined the Marines and served for three years. Tuff turned down the opportunity to attend Officers Candidate School after being promoted to sergeant. After being discharged Tuff returned to Forks, worked in the woods, and attended college for three years or so.
After explaining some rather serious issues he had with the Forks Police/County Sheriff’s Departments and perhaps with the assistance of Joe Allen and Bert Cole, Tuff was accepted in the Washington State Patrol in 1960 and rather quickly rose to Sergeant and then Lieutenant. He graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., the Advanced School for Law Enforcement. Don was promoted to Captain in 1985. After the State Patrol retirement in 1986, Tuff worked for Lakeside Industries for nine years, and had been completely retired since 1995.
Tuff and Nancy Lochbaum were married
in Sumas, Wash. in the early 1960’s and have two daughters, Jody Mull of Bellevue, and Cindy Kay of Olympia. Nancy died of cancer before Jody and Cindy were teenagers, and a few later years later Tuff and Jo Ann Idecker were married
. Tuff adopted Jo Ann’s daughter Rachel, who is a registered nurse living in California. Tuff and Jo Ann were subsequently divorced. Don and Carol Piper married
in 1992. They were together for 23 years.
Tuff is survived by his brother Jim Mason of Montesano, Carol and dog Jax at their family home in Centralia, Jody Mull and husband Cliff, daughters Madeline, Lydia and Caroline; Cindy Kay and husband Doug, children Tanner, Olivia and Kris; Rachel Mason, step children Brian & Bruce Piper and Krista Geist and several nieces and nephews. In addition to Nancy, he was preceded in death by his parents, and half-brothers Dick and Herb Welch.

Carrie Lee Hilla
Carrie Lee Hilla, 51, passed away peacefully at her home in Napa, Calif., on March 22, 2015, with her family by her side. She died from lung cancer, something she bravely and positively battled for the last three years.
Carrie was born to her late parents, Raymond and Peggy Sasticum, in Aberdeen, Wash., in 1963. She spent her childhood and much of her life in Grays Harbor before traveling and moving to California. During this time, Carrie attended and graduated from North Beach H.S. in 1982, and later from Grays Harbor College in 1996 with her degree in Nursing. Carrie worked as a nurse until three years ago; a career that she found very rewarding.
Carrie loved to travel to new places and try different foods along the way. Each fall she traveled to New Hampshire for her “leafy tour” as she called it. One of the things on her barrel list was to visit all 30 MLB stadiums during one season. Carrie (and many of us through her pictures and stories) did this during the 2013 season. Another highlight she talked about often was all of the National Parks that she had the opportunity to visit and see. With each new place she traveled to or ate at, came an amazing experience that brought her so much joy.
Carrie is survived by her boyfriend Dr. Matthew Shepherd; daughters Nicole (Brian) Corneal and Tammie (Tasha) Hamilton; sons Joshua Hilla and Kyle Hilla; grandchildren Makena and Cameron Corneal; step-grandchild Dawn Corneal; siblings Raymond Sasticum Jr., Dawn (Sam) Barnwell, Paula LaFlame and Sandra Miranda; nine nieces and nephews; Marty, Pat and Annie Shepherd; close family friend Marcy Beck and her pets, Bear, Jade and Lucky.
Carrie will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, whose greatest passion in life was helping others. The family would like to thank all of the people who Carrie met throughout her life. Her life was a meaningful and great one because of the people in it and the memories she made along the way.
Family will receive condolences and visitors between 1-4 p.m. at the Judith Inn in Ocean Shores on Saturday, April 11, 2015, in honor and celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Carrie’s honor to her favorite charity, United Against Lung Cancer.
