Kurt Axel Sjostrand

Kurt Axel Sjostrand died comfortably in his home in Aberdeen, Wash., on Monday, May 4, 2015, of congenital heart failure at the age of 94 with his family and loving wife of 40 years by his side.

Kurt Axel Sjostrand was born April 4, 1921, as the son of Axel and Linnea Anna Sjostrand in the town of Gothenburg, Sweden. He, along with his older brother, Rolf, accompanied by their mother, began an adventure of a lifetime as they traveled to the United States aboard the Steamship “Drottningholm” arriving at Ellis Island at the Port of New York on March 18, 1930. They soon joined their father in Grays Harbor who had arrived earlier to the area and settled in the Wishkah Valley. This is where Kurt attended elementary school and learned to speak English. He attended Weatherwax High School until he joined the Military on Dec. 1, 1942. It was during this time he became a Naturalized, US Citizen in a Naturalization Service in New Guinea, on Sept. 2, 1944. He served in World War ll as a Technician, Fifth Grade, as a member of the Army Radio Corp. He was honorably discharged after three years of service on Dec. 26, 1945, having achieved the rank of Corporal. He then obtained his GED and went on to trade school in Tacoma to earn his Electricians Certificate.

In 1950 he married Barbara Nelson of Aberdeen, together they had three children. They divorced in 1965. On Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 1974, he and Marjorie Ellen Keller, who he describes as “the love of his life” married in Reno, Nev., and began a journey that lasted 40 years. This journey blessed him with three additional stepsons and a large loving family. Marjorie and Kurt have called the Harbor home for the rest of his days.

Kurt worked for 27 years as the city electrician of Aberdeen, retiring in 1983. On June 3rd, with great pride, he was made an honorary member of the Aberdeen Fire Department. Kurt was also an honorary life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 593 of Aberdeen. After his retirement from the city, he enjoyed many years of golf at The Highlands Golf club where he, on three separate occasions, got a “hole in one” on the 6th hole. He also enjoyed fishing with his friends and grandchildren, with the Wishkah River being his favorite fishing hole. In the last several years he would enjoy meeting up with his poker buddies or driving to Eagle Creek Casino for a “quick game of cards”.

Kurt was preceded in death by his three children; Larry, 2009, Terry, 2013, and Sheryl “Cookie, ” 1953, and by his stepson, Steven Keller, in 2009. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Ellen, His stepson’s and their wives, James and Claudia Keller of Snohomish, and David and Julie Keller of Richland, and his daughter in Law’s, Gail Keller (Steve) of Tumwater and Sandy Sjostrand (Larry) of Hoquiam, and his Niece, Lorene Rang of Lacey. He has 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. This benevolent man is now off on what he described as he departed this world as “on the greatest adventure of all mankind”, He is wished eternal love. Save us a place, Kurt.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, May 16th at 4 p.m. at Fern Hill Funeral Home at 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen, Wash. Family asks for memorials to be given to the Aberdeen Fire Department, 700 W. Market St., Aberdeen, WA 98520 or the Harbor’s Home Health and Hospice, 201 Seventh St., Hoquiam, WA 98550.

Dennis Kelly McFadden

Dennis Kelly McFadden, age 63, a longtime resident of Hoquiam, died on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. Dennis was born in Aberdeen, Wash., on Aug. 5, 1951, to Jerry D. and Mary Ann (Sturm) McFadden. He attended local schools and graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1969.

After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. After his discharge, he located in Seattle, where he attended college. He then returned to Hoquiam and worked as a logger. He and Karen DuBois owned and operated the Show Boat Tavern for more than eight years. He later worked for LeMay from 1999 until his retirement in 2013.

He was an avid reader and history buff. He loved camping, spending time with family at Wynoochee Wildwood and fishing.

Surviving relatives include his life partner and soul mate, Karen DuBois of Hoquiam; Karen’s children, Dana Hammer of Anaheim, Calif., Kristine Helde of Olympia, Ila Whitsey of Aberdeen, Evin Chuscavage and Miles Chuscavage, both of Hoquiam; brothers, Calvin McFadden and Bill McFadden, both of Hoquiam; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the Hoquiam VFW, 4077 Seventh St., Hoquiam, Wash.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to East County TNR, (Trap, Neuter and Return), 408 E. Pioneer, Montesano, WA 98563.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Bounthavy Saengchanh

Bounthavy Saengchanh died in her Raymond home May 4, 2015. She was born March 6, 1963, in Savannakhet, Laos. Bounthavy came to the Raymond-South Bend area immediately after immigrating to the United States in the late 1980s.

Bounthavy is survived by her 12-year-old son, Anthony Douglas, who resides at the family home in Raymond. She also is survived by her 30-year-old son, Noy, and his wife, Sok, and their 3-year-old daughter, Mia, in Olympia, Wash. Her 27-year-old daughter, Lucky, lives in Ventura, Calif. Bounthavy is divorced.

A Buddhist funeral will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond with cremation following at the Fern Hill Crematory in Aberdeen. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Shari Nell Shelton

Longtime Harbor resident Shari Nell Shelton, age 65, passed away on April 26, 2015, in Aberdeen, Wash. She was born on March 29, 1950, in Aberdeen to Agnes Patricia Osburn and Jack Eugene Crawford.

She enjoyed running marathons and scrapbooking.

Shari is survived by her sons Michael Wayne Johnson and Sean Eugene Johnson, brothers Donald Crawford and Tom Crawford and a sister Linda Bissell.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the Hoquiam Kingdom Hall, 1000 K St., Hoquiam, WA 98550.

Kathleen Elaine Harless

Kathleen Elaine Harless, 64, Aberdeen resident and former registered nurse, died Thursday afternoon, April 30, 2015, at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Olympia, Wash.

Kathy was born on Dec. 9, 1950, in Akron, Ohio to Lawrence W. and Patricia A. (Flaherty) Loucks. When she was in the second grade, Kathy’s family moved to Skagit Valley, Wash. They later moved to Aberdeen, where Kathy graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1969.

On Aug. 23, 1969, Kathleen married Ronald Wayne Harless in Hoquiam’s Harbor Free Methodist Church. Ron lives at the family home.

Kathy worked for Sears from 1975 to 1981 and then she then went to Grays Harbor College, where she graduated with the first graduating class from the school’s registered nursing program. She then went to work at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in the Recovery Room from 1987 until her retirement in 2005. She was passionate that her patients get the best medical care possible.

She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Aberdeen and Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam. Kathy loved music, singing alto in many musical groups. Most of her vocal work was done praising her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She also did a little gardening and sewing. If there was a baby nearby, Kathy was usually holding it, she loved babies and small children. Kathy loved to travel and visited 49 of the 50 states along with three different trips to Europe.

Kathleen is survived by her husband of 45 years, Ronald Harless of Aberdeen; three sons: Ronald W. Harless Jr. of Seattle, Matthew L.J. and wife Gienelle Harless of Cosmopolis and Ryan M. Harless of Aberdeen; her mother Patricia Loucks of Arlington, Wash.; brother, John and wife Kathy Loucks of Marysville; sisters: Ann Molnar of Albany, Ore., Roberta and husband George Barnes of Lacey and Laura and husband Riaz Monjazeb of Arlington, Wash.; two grandsons: Kaiden Schubert and Eli Harless.

There will be a celebration of Kathleen’s life on Saturday, May 9, 2015, at 11 a.m. in Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam, Wash.

The family asks that donations be made to: Immanuel Baptist Church, Attn: Children & Youth Ministries, 1200 Soule Street, Hoquiam, WA 98550.

Craig T. Anneberg Nov. 17, 1924 - April 27, 2015

Craig Trenary Anneberg of Aberdeen passed away peacefully after a two-month illness on Monday, April 27, 2015, in Seattle. He was 90.

Craig was born on Nov. 17, 1924, in Carroll, Iowa to Dr. Robert Daniel Anneberg and Ruth Auld Anneberg. The family moved to Longview, Wash., in 1928. Craig graduated from R. A. Long High School in 1942.

In 1942, Craig enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he trained as a pilot. After flying transport missions in the United States, he qualified for fighter pilot school in 1943. Craig proudly flew his beloved P-38 Lightning for the duration of WWII and the famed P-51 Mustang thereafter in the Air National Guard.

After WWII, Craig attended Boise Junior College in Boise, Idaho. While there, he continued to fly, purchasing a Taylor Craft single engine airplane that he flew from the dusty rural airfields around Idaho and beyond. After junior college, Craig entered the University of Washington and later the University of Idaho where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering. He was also Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering.

After college, Craig used his mining engineering skills in the copper mines near Holden, Wash. at the north end of Lake Chelan. His next job in 1950 took him across the North Cascades to Ross Lake, where he was a surveyor/engineer for Seattle City Light. His team helped design and construct the famous Ross Powerhouse-Ross Dam at the headwaters of the Skagit River. After that project, Craig worked shortly as an engineer for Bechtel Corporation in Ferndale.

On Aug. 8, 1953, he married Helen Frances Johnston of Seattle. They lived in Bellingham and Port Angeles, Wash., and moved to Hoquiam in 1956 when he took a job as an engineer with Rayonier, Incorporated. They moved to Aberdeen in 1956. Craig worked for Rayonier (which later became ITT Rayonier) for 37 years until his retirement in 1992.

Since 1957, Craig had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Aberdeen where he served on the Church Council for many years and as Council President.

Craig was always very active in the community. He was a member of the Active 20 -30 Club, helping to organize the Soap Box Derbies of the 1960’s. He volunteered during the 1960’s and 1970’s doing YMCA Indian Guides and helping with YMCA Swim Team meets. He was also active in American Field Service (A.F.S.) for many years, serving as president twice. Craig was instrumental in bringing many exchange students to Aberdeen. He and his family hosted A.F.S. exchange student Susana Rostagnol of Uruguay in 1971-72.

Craig continued his community involvement during his retirement. He joined both the Aberdeen Elks Club and the Aberdeen Lions Club. He was a Director on the Lions Club board and served as president last year (2013-14). The Club awarded him the Melvin Jones Fellowship last year, which is their highest honor. He served as chairman of the Lions Club Relay for Life committee and was active in many of their other projects. Other memberships included the Grays Harbor Yacht Club where he served as Commodore. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Grays Harbor Credit Union and Grays Harbor Community Hospital for many years.

Craig enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his beloved house in Cannon Beach, Oregon where he hosted boisterous family reunions every summer. He loved snow skiing in Utah, salmon fishing, and going to UW Husky football games.

Craig was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his parents, his sisters Margery Anneberg and Ruth Mary Anneberg, and his brother Robert D. Anneberg, Jr.

Craig is survived by his daughter, Darcie Fulkerson (Steve) of Kent; sons Craig R. Anneberg (Jerri) of Longview, Stephan Anneberg (Inga-Lisa) of Kenmore, James W. Anneberg (Julie) of Edmonds; his A.F.S. “daughter” Dr. Susana Rostagnol of Montevideo, Uruguay, and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, James C. Anneberg (JoAnn) of Edmonds.

A celebration of life service is planned for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9 at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. A reception will follow at the Grays Harbor Country Club.

The family suggests donations in Mr. Anneberg’s memory to the Grays Harbor Relay for Life.

Richard Lee ‘Dick’ Tinder

Richard Lee ‘Dick’ Tinder, 73, lifetime Aberdeen resident and former Metal Shop and Metal Arts instructor at Hoquiam High School, died Sunday, April 26, 2015, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash.

Dick was born on April 10, 1942, in Aberdeen to Harold and Mary (Hermans) Tinder. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1960 and then went to Grays Harbor College for two years.

He went to work at Lambs Grays Harbor as a machinist in 1963 and worked there until he went to work as the Metal Shop instructor at Hoquiam High School in 1982, where he taught his love of metal work until his retirement in June 2011.

On Feb. 17, 1963, Richard married Jo Ann L. Schroeder in Buhl, Idaho. She resides at the family home.

Dick and Jo Ann own and operate a cranberry bogg in Ocean City. He was a member of the Washington Education Association, Northwest Blacksmith’s Association and was working with the Historical Seaport to establish a forging shop at their new location. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Dick loved forging and metal art, a perfectionist in all that he did. He also loved old cars.

Dick is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jo Ann Tinder, Aberdeen; an Uncle: Daniel Sopko, Montesano, Wash.; cousins: Cynthia Yarborough, Star Lake, Wash. and Annette Noe, Longview, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a time of visitation and viewing on Friday, May 1st from 1 to 8 p.m. in Fern Hill Funeral Home. A funeral will take place on Monday, May 4th at 11 a.m. in Fern Hill Funeral Home Chapel, Aberdeen. Burial will follow in Fern Hill cemetery. A reception will take place at the Aberdeen Eagles at 1 p.m.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Grays Harbor Relay For Life, 1313 Broadway, Suite 100, Tacoma, WA 98402.

Lawrence James Hall, Jr.

Lawrence James Hall Jr., 78, a longtime Taholah resident, died on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was born on March 19, 1937, in Taholah, to Lawrence James Hall, Sr. and Grace Charley Hall. He was an enrolled member of the Quinault Indian Nation.

He was raised in Taholah and attended school at Taholah and Moclips.

Lawrence James Hall Jr. was married to Clara Agnes Youckton on March 1, 1957, in Taholah. She died on Aug. 26, 2001.

He had resided in Oakville and worked at the Elma Plywood. Following an injury he attended The Evergreen State College and there he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts in 1987.

He had attended the Shaker Church in Oakville and Taholah.

His travels had taken him to various parts of the Pacific Northwest. He also visited Reno and various parts of California.

He was an advocate for the Quinault Indian Nation and had served on state and national council and commissions. He also worked for the U.S. Forest Service and several Quinault Indian Nation social service programs. He was a commercial fisherman for over 25 years. He was involved in several youth programs and was a great supporter of the Chitwhin’s sporting events and players.

Lawrence is survived by his sons, Carl Hall, Larry Hall, Mickey Hall and George Hall all of Taholah; his daughters, Marie Hall of Taholah and Sharon Hall of Oakville; 26 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and other relatives.

A candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 23, 2015, at the Taholah Community Center.

An Indian Shaker funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, April 24, 2015, at the Taholah Educational Center Gymnasium. Dennis Anderson and Pat Bennett George will be officiating at the services.

Concluding services and interment will follow in the Taholah cemetery. A dinner for family and friends will be in the Taholah Community Center.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 - 5th Street in Hoquiam.

Roger William Harris

Roger William Harris passed away suddenly on April 8, 2015. He had a full life in his shortened 77 years. After graduation from Aberdeen (Wash.) High School, he joined the Navy’s NavCad program. Upon completion, he was the youngest ensign in the Navy. He was a naval aviator for 13 years, including two Vietnam tours. After the Navy, he chose to work for TWA and retired as a captain in 1997 after 30 years. He enjoyed his retirement exactly as he wanted — traveling, reading and enjoying the view from his back porch. Roger is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy, sons Tom and Mike, daughter-in-law Melody, two grandsons, Mitch and Riley, sisters Sue and Mary, brother Jeff and sister-in-law Marcia. A celebration of life was held at his home on April 11 and a memorial will be held in Washington in August. Donations may be made to The Olson Foundation/Roger Harris in care of Jeff Harris, P.O. Box 885, Wauna, WA 98395. Funds support quality projects in Latin America, spending only the interest; is non­profit/tax exempt and will live on.

Patricia Arlyne (Fishel) Bache

Arlyne, age 77, passed away peacefully at Saint Peter’s Hospital in Olympia, Wash. April 5, 2015 at 1:45 a.m., due to complications from kidney and liver failure. Arlyne was born in Aberdeen, Wash. to Ralph and Emma Fishel of Neilton, Wash. She resided in Neilton the first 20 years of her life and graduated from Lake Quinault High School in 1956. Arlyne lived in Wilmington, Ohio, Neilton, Wash., SE Alaska, Ketchikan, Alaska and Olympia, Wash. during her adult life.

Her legacy is having raised four sons; Dale, Donald, Daniel Davis and Stanley Etherington all of whom she was very proud and loved very much. She drove school buses at Lake Quinault and in Alaska for many years and she always spoke of the students she transported as “My Kids”.

Arlyne is survived by her husband, Ralph Bache in Olympia, two brothers, Glen Fishel and wife Martha (Burlington) and Earnest Floyd Fishel and wife Liz (Neilton), Sons: Dale Davis and wife Kari (Auburn), Donald Davis and wife Rhonda (Auburn), Daniel Davis and wife Barbie (Lietchfield, Ky.), and Stanley Etherington and wife Leslie (Rochester), step-son: Donald Bache (Olympia), step-daughters Anne Baer and husband Ted (Tacoma) and Carol Grudzien and husband John (Tacoma), grandchildren: Douglas, Jennifer, Kyle and Kim Davis, Taryn Etherington, J.J Waterman, Adam (Blake) Newton and wife Laura, Kimberly (Brooke) Jaggers and husband Brandon, Matthew, Caroline and Ryan Baer, Anna and Maia Grudzien, and great-grandchildren: Anna Newton and Griffin and Gracie Jaggers

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the Seashore Villa Community Center, 4806 Cushman Rd. NE, Olympia, WA 98506. Refreshments will follow.

Mark Russell Nieznalski

Mark Russell Nieznalski, 62, of Montesano, died at home Jan. 30, 2015. He was born Sept. 28, 1952, to Victor J. Nieznalski and Louise L. Markworth. He arrived on their sixth anniversary, best gift ever! He was raised in Central Park and attended Central Park Elementary School. All his teachers said “he talks in class.” That was Mark, never quiet, always a story. He went to Hopkins Junior High and has the letter sweater to prove it. Mark graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1971. He attended Grays Harbor College for a few months and joined the U.S. Navy when the draft got him. He was based at Moffett Field, Calif., and flew in P3’s during the Vietnam War. He met the love of his life Cindy shortly after his discharge. He brought her back to his hometown and bought a house in Montesano. They were married Dec. 11, 1978. He drove truck and worked in several mills. He began working for Rayonier Sawmill on the green chain and worked himself up to Mill Superintendent. Mark enjoyed playing slow pitch and volleyball until two knee surgeries put an end to that. He also shot pool for local teams. Mark loved hunting and fishing, he had a million stories. The best one being the trophy elk he took with bow and arrow. That big boy put him in the Pope & Young book. After an injury ended his sawmill career, he went back to college where he earned honors and an award from the governor. He worked in real estate before retiring. Mark and Cindy raised Alaskan Malamutes and he loved his dogs. His best buddy was Cody, the yappy Papillion. He leaves behind his wife Cindy, sister Viki Ewing (Tom), nieces Kari Aschenbrenner and Tracy Ewing, grandnieces Sydney and Kylee. Also cousins in Olympia, Seattle, Forks and Missouri.

He left us all too soon. We will miss that grin, laughter and humor — You’re Free Now.

Joe Rice

Joe Rice was born May 7, 1955, in Eureka, Calif. He passed away peacefully in Auburn, Wash., Thursday, April 23, 2015, in the presence of his family.

Joe grew up in Aberdeen, where he attended Aberdeen High School and graduated in the class of 1973. Joe initially spent his post-high school years crabbing in Tokeland, Wash., and in the Bering Sea.

It was not long until Joe found his calling as a longshoreman and militant ILWU member. Joe was a member of ILWU Local 24, Grays Harbor, where he served on the executive board and safety committee before retiring from Local 52, Seattle.

Joe’s civil service resume included elected office as the Aberdeen City Council — Finance Committee chairman. A passion for social justice led Joe to involvement in union action; he often recalled solidarity marches around the Harbor.

Joe was always an artist and collector of art who loved to hike in Olympic National Park and whitewater raft in the Wenatchee and Dechutes rivers. Later in life, he loved gardening with his daughter, Lauren, and watching his son, Anthony, play football at Pacific Lutheran University.

He is survived by a son: Anthony, Oakland, Calif.; a daughter: Lauren, Enumclaw; two sisters: Mary Rice Russell, Wenatchee, and Donna Jean Leland, Seattle; and also one grandson.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 30 at Fern Hill Funeral Home chapel, Aberdeen. Interment will take place in Fern Hill cemetery. A reception will follow at the Polson Museum.
