Ramona Bogdanovich (Cass)
Six years ago, shortly after the passing of her husband, Marion, Ramona Bogdanovich wrote a letter in response to a friend’s note of condolence.
In the letter Ramona said, “Even in this time of sadness, I stopped the other day and noticed the exquisite beauty of a feather as it rose on the wind and slowly drifted to the ground.”
These poetic words were so like Ramona — a truly beautiful person who could find hope, splendor and positivity even in the face of turmoil. On Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014 — after years marked by both turbulence and calm — the beautiful feather that was Ramona’s life gracefully came to rest at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash., with family by her side.
Born Nov. 19, 1933, to Sylvia and Howard Cass of Skykomish, Wash., Ramona spent her childhood in this Cascade foothills community along with her big sister, Dolores Bertrand, who survives her in Tonasket, Wash. She graduated from Skykomish High School in 1952 and enrolled in what was then called the Western Washington College of Education in Bellingham, where she studied art and met Marion, her future husband.
After their marriage in 1954, the couple moved to Marion’s hometown of Montesano where they raised six children: Jody, Brenda, Monica, Guy, Angela and Bridget. Despite the demands of the more-than-full-time job of motherhood, Ramona never lost the drive and desire to pursue art, music, and writing.
A longtime member of the Grays Harbor Art League, her artwork graced countless posters and flyers for non-profit organizations and school events. In the music realm, her piano playing and crystalline soprano voice filled the Bogdanovich home throughout the years. She was best known, though, for her writing in the Montesano Vidette. Her “Senior Speak” columns always brought a smile, while earning numerous regional writing awards.
Ramona also shared her gifts with others in the community, especially those she sponsored in Alcoholics Anonymous, a program she credits with saving her life in 1980. She facilitated AA meetings for inmates at the Clearwater Corrections Center and Grays Harbor County Jail, and served as a member of the Grays Harbor County Human Services Advisory Board and the Governor’s Council on Addiction.
Her greatest achievements, however, didn’t come in the service of those with addictions, at an easel, or a piano, or writing desk. Her shining hours were spent at the kitchen table, at the side of a bed, behind the wheel of a car, and anyplace else she could serve, comfort, and encourage her children. Their success as people is incontrovertible testimony to her success as a mom. Her legacy includes Jody Bogdanovich of Olympia (daughters Brandi and Jessica Wilkinson), Brenda Berlin of Seattle (children Tyler Bender, Ronnie Lee Rainwater (Ray), Bobbie Bender (Jorge), Michele Schubert, Autumn and Cass Berlin), Monica Ewing of Montesano (sons Jordan, Tucker and Noah), Guy Marion Bogdanovich of Olympia (wife Eleanor Pawley, sons Drew and Alec), Angela Turk of Bellevue (sons Hunter and Logan), Bridget Billotti of Renton (husband Jim, sons James and Tony), and 14 great-grandchildren.
Her family is especially grateful for the compassionate care shown by Ramona’s doctors, staffs of Grays Harbor Community Hospital and Providence St. Peter Hospital, as well as her visiting home-health caregivers.
Ramona’s friends and family are invited to a viewing on Friday, Dec. 19, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Whiteside Mortuary in Aberdeen, and to funeral services on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Montesano, with internment and reception to follow.
Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Western and Central Washington at 100 W. Harrison St., N200, Seattle, WA 98199 or alz.org; or to the American Heart/Stroke Association at 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231 or strokeassociation.org.
