Dolores Jones

Dolores Jones of McCleary and the East Satsop Valley, passed away on Feb. 28, 2015. Dolores was born on Oct. 27, 1929 to a large farm family on the Great Plains of South Dakota. She grew up on that farm near Doland, S.D. and graduated from Doland High School. Dolores met Harry Jones of nearby Frankfort, S.D. upon his return from World War II, and they married in June of 1947. Harry was continuing his education under the GI Bill and that took them to the University of Colorado at Boulder, in pursuit of Harry’s Master degree. Dolores supported Harry’s education by typing and editing many of his papers, and this support carried on through Harry’s writing career. Dolores lived in South Dakota until 1968 when she and Harry moved to Washington state.

Dolores was the mother to seven children, including Michael Jones, Brenda Bryson, Linda Ringer, Greg Jones, Cynthia Wheatley, Karen Smith and Philip Jones. Dolores was first and foremost proud of her seven children as well as her 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was an outstanding cook and the family dinners were legendary, typically involving many multi-generational family members. She kept busy raising her family during her younger years, and once the children were grown, went to work as a Medical Office Manager for various doctors in Montesano and Aberdeen. She retired in 1994 to her home on the Satsop River where she and Harry enjoyed country living, needle-point, and chair caning. They particularly enjoyed gathering chanterelle mushrooms in the woods and would often look forward to attending a performance of a bluegrass band in a local eatery. Harry preceded Dolores in death in 2009. They were longtime members of the Montesano United Methodist Church.

Dolores and Harry traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and visited family and friends coast to coast. Their travels took them to Belgium, France and Holland where they visited Dolores’ relatives.

Alta M. Reay

Alta M. Reay lived 91 vibrant years before dying at home from cancer in Corona, Calif. on Feb. 27, 2015. Although born in Phoenix, Ariz., on Feb. 11, 1924 to Clarence Hewitt King and Charlotte Mae (Potter) King, Alta spent her youth in Coronado, Calif., graduating from high school there in 1941. Her can-do, fearless approach to life compelled her to volunteer as a spotter during WWII, standing on rooftops to watch for enemy bombers. A love of music led to a job at a record store while still in high school, then led her to a local dance at the Hotel Del Coronado, where she met her future husband, James G. Law. They were married in 1942, eventually settling in Laguna Beach, Calif., where she raised three children, taking them on rock hunting and camping adventures. She worked as a school bus driver before becoming a china buyer for the renowned Pottery Shack. She and Jim divorced in 1967.

Alta married George W. Reay on Aug. 14, 1970, in Waimanalo, Hawaii and together they ran G & G Sales, manufacturing representatives for porcelain and pottery companies such as Noritake and Otagiri. Company trips to Japan fueled Alta’s natural curiosity, inspiring an interest in Japanese art and strengthening a love for travel. In Hawaii Alta continued her avid gardening and began raising birds, keeping several aviaries. After retirement, she became a docent for Honolulu’s Bishop Museum and was later honored by Hawaii’s Governor with Volunteer of the Year.

In 1993 Alta and George moved to Hoquiam, Wash. where she became active in her adopted community. Always a voracious reader and lifelong learner, Alta became a dedicated member of the Friends of the Hoquiam Library, helping with weekly book sales and special events. She also volunteered at the Polson Museum, served on the Board, and added a touch of class to museum functions. Alta was a member of the Garden Club and PEO Chapter T.

While her travels — researched thoroughly beforehand — took her to Australia, Bali, Ireland, England, Portugal, Costa Rica, Alaska, Guatemala and China, she also relished a good garage sale.

Alta was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Gilberta K. Seatz, her loving husband George, her son John P. Law and brother Burt L. King. She is survived by daughters, Kathleen L. Latimer of Corona, Calif. and Mary Anne Loomis of Montesano, Wash.; stepdaughters, Laurinda Hadsell of Honolulu, Hawaii, Lucinda Reay of Las Vegas, Nev. and Georgina Hart of Waimanalo, Hawaii; 10 grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brothers, Matt W. King of Hawthorne, Nev. and Sam H. King of Yerington, Nev. and sisters, Jacquelyn A. Hartman of Sparks, Nev. and Sandra J. Essenpreis of Hawthorne, Nev.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 18th at the Polson Museum in Hoquiam. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to the Friends of the Hoquiam Library or to the Polson Museum. Raise a glass of sherry in her honor at cocktail hour.

Cheryl Jean Anderson

We said our last goodbyes to Cheryl “Hope” Jean Ward-Anderson, Wednesday, March 11, 2015, as she passed away at the age 59, from injuries sustained in a critical car crash the week prior near Gig Harbor, Wash.

Daughter to Dorothy Jean and James Albert Ward, Cheryl was born Nov. 16, 1955 in Davenport, Iowa but soon settled in Grays Harbor at a young age. She would make Aberdeen her home throughout her life. Cheryl was the eldest sister to Laurie Ness, Geri DeMoss, Michael Ward and Joy Johnson.

In 1976 Cheryl married her husband of 28 years Phillip Anderson. Cheryl was most proud of her three children: Amber Dawn Anderson, Timothy John Phillip Anderson and Micah James Anderson. She most cherished raising her family and always being there for her kids. Her loving spirit and humble ways will live on through them.

Cheryl devoted her professional career to helping others. At a young age she entered the medical field as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Over the years, Cheryl’s passion for helping others less fortunate continued to develop. While raising her family, she made the decision to return to school and transition into a career in medical billing.

On May 6, 1973, Cheryl dedicated her life to serving Jehovah when she was baptized. She would spend the rest of her life spreading the Word of God. She was faithful until the end sharing with everyone the teachings of the Bible. Cheryl took great comfort in knowing that she was never alone, for she held dear Isaiah 41:10, “Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be anxious, for I am your God. I will fortify you, yes, I will help you, I will really hold on to you with my right hand of righteousness.’

She is survived by her three children, four siblings, countless cousins, nieces, and nephews, and several dear life-long friends.

Services will be held at the Aberdeen Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., with a reception to follow.
