Ardine June Lewis

Ardine June Lewis passed away Feb. 11, 2015 at Montesano Health and Rehabilitation Center in Montesano, Wash. She formerly lived at Westhaven Villa in Aberdeen, Wash. Ardine was born June 30, 1923 to Orrin Lyonal Schwenneker, Sr. and Delilia F. Schwenneker in Avoca, Iowa. She lived in Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina and Washington State. While growing up in Nebraska, she and her brother, Orrin, Jr. happily exercised horses after cleaning stalls at a nearby horse farm. The two alternated summers staying at their paternal grandparent’s farm and maternal grandparents home in town.

In winter when the pond froze Ardine made a deal with her brother. She would be on the boys ice hockey team if he would figure skate with her.

Ardine graduated from Central High School in Omaha, Neb. In 1941. An article in the Central High Register (school newspaper dated 12-20-1940) stated “when five large boys failed to catch a mouse on the loose, Ardine Schwenneger did!” She learned to fly an airplane in her late teens.

Ardine believed in God and her country. She served in a division of the armed forces during WWII. She spoke of it often and had a great respect for men and women serving in the military.

In Raleigh, N.C. at Meredith College for women, Ardine earned her B.A. teaching certificate and began teaching Elementary School. When students needed to earn money, she would accompany them to pick cotton or tobacco.

It was at this time Ardine and Steven Eugene Lewis met. They married Dec. 21, 1946. Steve was in forestry which brought them to Washington. They were later divorced.

Ardine completed her education at the University of Puget Sound and Pacific Luthern University.

Ardine loved horses, dogs and cats; she fed neighborhood cats even though they were already quite plump from their owners care! In 1983, she wrote a poem “Little Grey One” about a special grey kitten she adopted from P.A.W.S when “Grey One” passed away, Dr. Stillion (a local Veterinarian) brought her a very nice black cat. She collected toy stuffed animals.

Ardine enjoyed her home (purchased in 1974), her yard and flowers immensely and liked going on drives to admire other’s yards; visiting friends in town, in the country and on their farms, going to the beach, Quinault Lake, fairs. Eating out and hosting small get togethers were special to her.

Ardine was a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for key women in education and served as President for a number of terms in the local PHI Chapter.

She led the book club “Page Turners” through the Montesano Timberland Library for several years and was a member of the “Gung Hoe” garden club.

Hobbies? Oh, yes! Sewing, embroidery, macname, ceramics, woodworking, arts and crafts, painting, gardening, canning, and was an avid book reader.

She supported many charities. She was proud to be a registered voter. At age 90 she didn’t seem as amazed as others did that she had very little grey hair!

Ardine loved music, opera, theater and Broadway shows; locally and travelling from Vancouver BC, Seattle, Olympia to Portland and Ashland, Oregon with friends or taking groups of students to Ashland’s Shakespeare Festival.

But most of all Ardine loved children and young people.

In 1961 she began teaching high school for Montesano School District. She retired July 18, 1994 with a large group of friends helping her celebrate the happy milestone at Karyle Perkins home in Montesano.

“Mrs. Lewis” taught English Composition, English Literature, Art, Home Ec., Drama and was advisor for many years of the Honor Society and ASB. She was known by her students as strict but fair. She expected students to do their best and not be a “smart alec” in her classroom or study hall! She had compassion for shy students and young people struggling through “tough times.” Alumni have said she motivated them and made a difference in their lives.

Ardine is survived by friends, students and coworkers who loved and respected her.

She will be missed by many and remembered by Alumni at Montesano High School class reunions for a lot of years to come.

Ardine was preceded in death by her parents, brother Orrin, and close friends who were like family to her.

Avoca, Iowa, next to her mother will be Ardine’s final resting place. As she requested, there will not be a service.

Donations in Ardine’s memory can be made at Grays Harbor Community Foundation, (Ardine Lewis Scholarship), 707 J. Street, Hoquiam, WA 98550-(360)-532-1600.
