Robert Victor Kindle May 1, 1951 - March 17, 2016
Four years battling pancreatic cancer became high drama as the curtain fell on Bob Kindle’s life at Harborview Medical Center on March 17, 2016. His will to live was great, but an accident on March 3 sent a blood clot from his femur to his lungs and respiratory failure resulted.
Bob was born in Raymond, Wash. His parents were the Rev. Dick and Joanne Kindle. He was raised with a strong work ethic by a family of tradesmen who built their own homes, practiced self-sufficiency, and were involved in scouting and ministering to those in need. He graduated from Raymond High School in 1970. As a youth, he worked at Dairy Queen, planted Weyerhaeuser trees and baled hay for the Rose Farm. He also painted water towers, and served in the Air Force based on Okinawa. He later traveled to various mills as the last of a dying breed - a ‘tramp shingle weaver” - sawing #1 shingles for 15 years from old growth cedar. A mill accident in 1987 forced job retraining, but cedar was always in his blood. In Divine synchronicity, he lived on Cedar Street in Montesano since 1987!
Bob graduated from chef school at Clover Park VTI in May 1990. He cooked for 22 years, first at Bridges in Aberdeen and then at Montesano’s BeeHive. During his career he catered large banquets for Bridges, Weyerhaeuser and the Lady Wash.
His passions were gardening, cooking, working with tools, training cooks, clam digging and playing his guitar and old upright piano. He loved baking bread, always making enough to give away four loaves. He was an avid reader, an accomplished pianist (but couldn’t read music) and a lifetime member of the Willapa Players. He adored his cats, his ‘adoptive’ great-grandchildren, and his partner’s daughters.
One highlight of Bob’s life was mountaineering with Outward Bound at age 16 and climbing three of Oregon’s tallest mountains. Another was participating in a marathon softball game in Raymond which lasted for three days. It raised $20, 000 to repair the municipal pool and is recorded in the 1982 Guinness Book of World Records as the longest softball game in history. (In keeping with his personal mantra of “Do or Die!” he sprained his ankle in the first inning, but kept on playing.)
Heartfelt thanks for their on-going support must go to Brother Ted, Bruce H., Jim and Peg K, Deb and Peter, Darryl and Judy, Mike and Melea, Wayne G., Bro Ric, and the caring staff at Providence Regional Cancer System and Harborview Hospital.
Survivors include Isa “Kitty” Mady, his partner of 30 years, and siblings Mike and Ric Kindle, Charlotte (Joe) Thorpe, and various nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at Montesano’s Methodist Church in Montesano, 410 E. Spruce.

He sailed every nook and cranny of Puget Sound, hiked the Olympics from the North Fork of the Quinault to the Dosewallips with his wife and friends.
