Kathryn Ann Snider Muhlhauser

Kathie Muhlhauser, age 75, was sent to us on June 16, 1940, and entered the heavenly skies on Monday, March 21, 2016, at her home in Olympia, Wash. Kathie was born in the generous city of Puyallup, Wash., to Louise Sanfield Snider and William Joseph Snider. The family resided in the cities of Olympia, Hoquiam and Aberdeen, where Kathie graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1958. After graduating, Kathie went on to attend Grays Harbor College and Western Washington University before beginning her career with United Airlines as a flight attendant. She would later go on to work at Rayonier in Hoquiam where she would reunite and marry Larry William Muhlhauser on July 8, 1972.

In addition to raising a strong and happy family, Kathie was a passionate stay-at-home baker and found joy in her tireless effort towards numerous sewing projects. When not staying at home with her many hobbies and crafts, Kathie enjoyed getting out of the house to see the world with her loving husband, be it by plane, train, cruise ship, or automobile. In retirement, Larry treated Kathie with many exotic trips across the world to places like China, France, and Latin America to see the many wonders of the world. However, what truly brought a smile to Kathie’s face were the many trips to see her far-flung family in Texas, Florida, Illinois and elsewhere.

There was a certain something about Kathie that seemed to impact everyone she came in contact with (As her children would say, “Never go shopping with Mom.” She stops and visits with everyone, complete strangers, and all.) She had a special inner ability that everyone would become her friend. Whether we minded, cherished, or loved her, Kathie’s presence filled a permanent place in all our lives that now leaves a hole in our hearts, which can never be replaced. There is no one else in the world like her and she will be missed.

When family and friends reflect about Kathie the remembrances may cause each to realize how she influenced the importance of the inner love within each of us. What a beautiful lady Kathie was. Look out up above, here she comes, the most special lady ever — you cannot help falling in love with her.

Kathie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Louise; sibling Jerry Snider. Kathie is survived by her husband, Larry of Olympia, Wash.; sibling Gail Lockwood (Frank deceased) of Houston, Texas; sons Mark (Jill) of Tampa, Fla. and Steve (Lori) of Federal Way, Wah.; daughters Lori (Robert) Backlund of San Antonio, Texas and Darla (Aulton) Dugan of Puyallup, Wash.; and an extraordinary niece Julie (Andrew) Lockwood Steinberg of The Woodlands, Texas. She also leaves behind granddaughters and grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, a special thought or memory would speak volumes of Kathie. You may choose to honor Kathie by making a donation in her name to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center — Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program.

Interment will be at Tahoma National cemetery.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 2, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fabulous Fifties Hall — 455 Saint Helens Avenue, Tacoma, Wash.

Nan Marie Rathjen

Nan was born on March 2, 1943, to Frederick Henry Rathjen and Eva Marie (Lindquist), in Hennepin, Minn. Nan died at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam on Saturday, March 19, with her best friends Annette Brice and Dwight Johnson at her bedside; together they held their hands above her heart, with thumbs entwined and felt her heart beat its last; as her favorite opera singer, Kiri Te Kanawa, sang “Climb Every Mountain, ” she took her final breath.

Nan would often be seen around Aberdeen on the busses with her bag cart for shopping at Safeway and, being an avid reader, at the library. She was easily recognizable with her black eye patch and glasses, cane, and lovely smile. She loved the arts, particularly opera; she enjoyed movies and TV shows, especially “The Good Wife.” She was well-travelled, both as a child and as an adult, loving Spain especially.

At one time she thought to become a doctor, but changed her mind and became a psychiatric nurse, mostly serving in San Francisco. Nan never married ; we like to think it was because no man was good enough for her. In 2010, she moved to Aberdeen, where she met Annette and Dwight. Together they could be seen talking together then crying until laughter took them over, as the three enjoyed a dark sense of humor. Together, this trio helped with mailers for the Driftwood Theater. We know that many people in her apartment building liked her and will miss seeing her outside on the benches.

Nan was preceded in death by her parents and a sister and outlived the rest of her extended family, though she adopted her two best friends as “her family”. No formal services are planned, but an informal memorial will take place at a later date.
