Dorothy A. Hellman
Oct. 22, 1925 - Feb. 14, 2016
My mother, Dorothy Hellma, n went to be with her husband and my father, Wally Hellman, on Valentine’s Day. She will be missed by many, especially me, her son. She was born in Aberdeen, Wash., to John and Anna Haskey. She had two brothers, Jack and Stan Haskey. She graduated from high school in 1943 and worked for her Aunt Bert and Uncle Don Lentz who owned Pioneer Florist in Aberdeen, Wash. Dorothy met the love of her life, Wally, and they were married
in 1955. A few years late, r my dad bought out his father’s shares in Peninsula Plywood and they moved up to Port Angeles, Wash., in 1959 to start a new life. A few years later, I came into the picture and her family was complete. My mother was a stay at home mom. That does not mean she did not work. A few weeks before every big holiday I remember her sitting in her chair in the family room making paper flowers out of ribbon for flower arrangements for Pioneer Florist and even sometimes going down to Aberdeen and working in the florist shop. She loved to cook and bake. I grew up blessed with an endless supply of chocolate chip cookies. She did not know how to cook for just us three. When she made a meal it could easily feed six or more. If you showed up at her house before any meal you had to eat. She also loved to work out in her yard. She would tell me it was a way to take a break from my dad who could be a bit of a handful at times. My mother loved to have company especially after my father passed away. When I would come over to see her I could tell if anyone had been over. If she was in a good mood I knew she had company that day. Dorothy leaves behind a son Terry Hellman of Port Angeles, a brother Stan Haskey (Doris) of Puyallup, sister-in-law Marian Haskey of Hoquiam and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Anna Haskey, her husband Wally Hellman and her brother Jack Haskey.
Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is handling her arrangements. She will have a graveside service at Mt. Angeles Memorial Park on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. After the service there will be a potluck reception at the Moose Lodge, 809 South Pine St. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Children’s Hospital, 4800 Sand Point NE Seattle, WA 98105 or Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, 504 East 8th St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Raeburn Hagen Oct. 15, 1924 - Feb. 11, 2016
Raeburn Rose Morrison Hagen was born in Wenatchee, Wash. on Oct. 15, 1924 into a family whose women were unusually high achievers for their day. Both mother and grandmother had college educations and high expectations for their offspring. Raeburn was encouraged to set her standards high and in the following 91 years, until her death on Feb. 11, 2016, she more than exceeded those expectations.
To all who knew her, she was a woman of admirable multi-dimensions.
To her family – she was a loving daughter, adoring sister, supportive wife, exemplary mother, doting grandmother and great-grandmother (“Nana”) – always there for each of them.
To her friends – she was warm, entertaining company, generous, loyal to a fault – a friend for life.
To her teachers-she was the ideal student, inquisitive, a quick mind, an avid reader and a gifted writer.
To her professional colleagues – she was both a natural leader and a cooperative team player.
To her community – she was a willing worker, good with details, an organizer who could be depended upon to follow through.
Raised in Spokane, she graduated Lewis & Clark High School in 1942. That fall, she entered the University of Washington, pledging the Chi Omega Sorority where she was elected president her senior year. In June of 1946, she graduated Magna Cum Laude, was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Language & Literature and a Phi Beta Kappa key.
While at the UW, she met a fellow student from Aberdeen, Wash., Wayne Delos Hagen. On Sept. 14, 1946, their marriage forged a 52-year partnership that lasted until his death in 1998.
The next two decades in Aberdeen included the births of their three children and the “stay-at-home Mom” chapter of her life. Well…not entirely! During those years, she also juggled community volunteer work (focusing on education and children’s services) with memberships in numerous organizations: Girl Scout leader, homeroom mother, PTA officer, founder of Aberdeen Friends of the Library. She was appointed to the Aberdeen Library Board, the Timberland Regional Library Board, and in 1972 was awarded a citation as the Outstanding Library Trustee from the Washington State Library Association. At various times she held offices in Aberdeen Young Mothers, Chapter DP of PEO, the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, and the Grays Harbor Panhellenic.
When her youngest child started school, she embarked on the professional chapter of her life. In 1968, she began teaching English Composition at Grays Harbor College. Four years later she returned to the UW earning a Master’s Degree in Library Science and lifetime membership in Beta Phi Mu, the International Honor Society for Library & Informational Studies. From 1976 to 1985, she served as Associate Dean of Library and Media Service at GHC. During her tenure there, she reorganized the library, installing an “open stacks” system which made the collection directly accessible to students. She also served as advisor to the college’s honor society, Phi Theta Kappa and as chief organizer/hostess for college social, faculty and community events.
In 1985, she left Grays Harbor to become Director of Library Services at Highline Community College in Des Moines, where she remained until her retirement in 1992.
Her retirement chapter was divided between summers at Hood Canal and winters in Palm Desert, Calif. Those years brought time for reading the good books she so loved, completing the daily New York Times crossword puzzle, viewing almost anything broadcast on PBS, enrolling in an intriguing-sounding seminar, and frequent traveling at home and abroad with her beloved sister “Bebs”. Her writing skills continued to be in demand: a special-occasion poem which she could whip out in minutes; an article or book review for a newsletter; help with a resume; editing assistance and she rarely missed a grandchild’s sports event, concert or dance recital.
To all who knew her, and by all accounts, Raeburn Hagen was a positive, productive, influence in her world. She no doubt would make her high achieving forebearers proud!
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, parents, Raymond R. and Zelma Reeves Morrision, and by a brother, Frank Reeves Morrison.
Her survivors are: a sister, Judge Betty Vitousek, three children, Wendy Bauer (Tom), Weedy McCauley (Mark), and Wayne “Tiger” Hagen Jr. (Jennifer); five grandchildren, Megan McCauley Melchiors (Rob), Maaret McCauley (fiancé, Ben Rogers), Angie Bauer (fiancé, Gavin Tronset), Eric Hagen, Anna Hagen; and two great-grandchildren, Molly and Luke Melchiors.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 12, 1 p.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Aberdeen, to be followed by a reception at the Rotary Log Pavilion.
In lieu of flowers, please address memorials to the Grays Harbor College Foundation or the Aberdeen Friends of the Library.
