Beverly L. Briscoe

Longtime Aberdeen resident, Beverly L. Briscoe, passed at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at the age of 77. She was born in Aberdeen, Wash. on March. 6, 1938, the daughter of the late Lyle and Grace (Reams) Manley. She graduated Montesano high school. She had worked at Aberdeen Senior Center and retired in 1989. She married Leroy Briscoe in Aberdeen on June 6, 1987.

Her favorite pastimes were camping, clam digging and golfing. She also enjoyed trips to the San Juan Islands, by ferry, with her daughters and spontaneous road trip adventures. She had a love for her animals.

Beverly is survived by her son Joaquin Barriault of Ocean Shores, Wash.; daughters Joyce (David) Morrill of Bothell, Wash. and Christina (William) Pitts of Ocean Shores, Wash. She has three brothers, Robert Manley of Montesano, Wash. and Larry Manley El Cajon, Calif. She was preceded in death by her brother Marvin Manley of Montesano, Wash., and husband Leroy Briscoe. Beverly has eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Friday, Feb. 26, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Fern Hill cemetery, with a potluck gathering after at Aberdeen Elks, 1712 S Boone Street, Aberdeen, WA 98520.

Amelia “Peggy” Warbington
Sept. 24, 1922 - Feb. 10, 2016

Longtime Hoquiam resident Peggy Warbington passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016, of natural causes at the age of 94. Peggy was surrounded by loved ones and is survived by her husband Carl Warbington, whom she had been married to for 73 years. Peggy was born in Indianola, Iowa, and was the eldest of seven children.

She moved to Washington State as a teenager where she met her future husband Carl Warbington after he continuously threw popcorn on her at a baseball game in attempt to get to know her.

Peggy was involved in several clubs in the local community including the local Hoquiam PTA, The Emblem club through the Hoquiam Elks, as well as Newton’s Ladies Aid.

After her husband’s retirement, they spent much of their time with family and traveling to Arizona during the winter. Peggy cherished her family and is survived by her husband Carl, four children, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and was predeceased by her son Carl Edward Warbington Jr.

No services are being held and burial arrangements are being handled by Coleman Mortuary.

Peggy will be buried alongside her son Edward at Sunset Memorial Park.

Cody S. Bonifer

Lifelong Hoquiam resident Cody Scott Bonifer passed away at home on Feb. 5, 2016. He was 27. Cody was born Oct. 6, 1988, in Aberdeen, Wash., to Cecil and Victoria (Parker) Bonifer.

Cody was raised in Hoquiam and attended Wishkah Valley High School.

Cody loved the Lord and read the Bible. He also liked to fish.

Cody is survived by his mother, Vicki, and stepfather Jake Shetler; grandparents Jeanne and Butch (Harlow) Parker; uncle Scott Bonifer and aunt Lori Bonifer; great-aunt Hazel Wakefield; aunt Dollie Evenson who helped with his care and friend and caregiver Brenda Cain and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins in the area.

A celebration of his with potluck will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Aberdeen Eagles.

Betty Arlene Harrison Mallow

Betty died Feb. 11, 2016 in Longview, Wash., at the age of 91, after a short illness.

Betty was born on Feb. 10, 1925 in Carthage, Ill., to Carl and Pearl Harrison.

She was married to Woodie Mallow on Jan. 21, 1946, in Lancaster, Calif.

Betty loved her family, music, word games, photography, snowbirding, traveling North America and, in her later years, going out for a slice of pie.

She was preceded in death by husband Woodie, daughter, Delores. Betty is survived by sons, Terry Mallow and Gordon Mallow, daughter Sharyn Mallow Woerz and well-loved nieces, nephews, grand and great-grandchildren and in-laws.

Hellos and goodbyes can be said and hugs given and received at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016 at the Montesano Wynochee cemetery.

Zelda L. Crane

OLYMPIA — Aberdeen resident Zelda Lee Crane, 73, died Friday, Feb.12, 2016 at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

A service is being planned and will be announced in The Daily World this week.

Arrangements are by Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.

James L. Bastian Jr.

OLYMPIA — James Louis Bastian Jr., a former longtime Taholah area resident, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. He was 90.

He served with the United States Army from 1943 to 1947. He had been a forester with the Bureau of Indian Affairs until he retired. He then did some work with the U.S. Forest Service for several years.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday at the McCleary cemetery

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Larry Rye

RAYMOND — Larry M. Rye of Raymond died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016 at home after a long illness. He was 53.

He was a commercial fisherman in his younger years and a self-employed painter.

A celebration of his life will be held at the American Legion Post 150 in Raymond at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Cremation arrangements were in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Henry F. (Bud) Hanscom

Henry F. (Bud) Hanscom, a resident of Aberdeen, passed away peacefully on Jan. 21, 2016, in Seattle with all of his children nearby. He was 81 years old.

Bud was born on April 7, 1934, in LaCross, Wash., to Eben and Della (Storer) Hanscom. He and his sister Lois spent their youth in West Seattle. He graduated from West Seattle High and joined the Air Force during the Korean War.

He made his career in the trucking industry driving both long and short hauls. In his off time he truly loved riding his Harley and was a member of the Seattle Cossacks motorcycle and stunt drill team for many years.

Bud retired to Aberdeen where he spent time as a volunteer with the Aberdeen Police Department. He could often be found walking the trails surrounding Aberdeen with his dog, Toby.

He is preceded in death by his wife Marylyn Dietz-Hanscom, and survived by his three children, three step-children, 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service and luncheon will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Harbor Assembly of God Church, 716 M St., Hoquiam.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Humane Society.

Elina S. Landrum

Elina “Nina” Susan Landrum was born in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1954. She had blossomed into a beautiful young lady as she grew up in and around Los Angeles, and later married and moved to Raymond with her husband in 1988. She selflessly worked as an in-home caretaker, and then a CNA for nearly 15 years. Throughout her career she touched many lives in a very powerful way.

Elina passed away at Harborview Medical Center on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016. She is survived by her faithful husband of 35 years, Willie Landrum; her two sons, Michael and James; three brothers, Timmy, Jimmy and Allen; one sister, Alice; two step-sisters, Brenda and Debbie; countless nieces and nephews and two grandkids. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten!

Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, at the New Life Fellowship Church in Raymond.

Cremation arrangements were in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

James L. Bastian Jr.

James Louis Bastian Jr., 90 years of age and a former longtime Taholah, Wash.-area resident, died on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash. He was born on March 28, 1925, in Taholah, Wash., to James Louis Bastian and Leena Ward.

He was raised in the North Beach area, attending school in Taholah and Moclips. Following his formal education, he served with the United States Army from May 21, 1943, to May 3, 1947. Following his discharge he returned to the Taholah area.

James was married to Pauline Reba Gunter in the mid 1970s at Pauline’s parent’s home in Darrington, Wash. They resided in the Everett and Packwood areas before returning to the Harbor area where they had since resided.

James had been a forester with the Bureau of Indian Affairs until he retired. He then did some work with the U.S. Forest Service for several years.

James and Pauline had traveled to most of the United States on their trips to visit friends and relatives as well as sight-seeing. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Bastain is survived by his wife, Pauline Bastain of the family home in McCleary; a son, Theodore Edward Bastain of Taholah; a step-daughter, Trenna Echevarria of Portland, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held at noon at the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam on Friday, Feb. 19. A graveside service will follow at the McCleary cemetery, 838 West Simpson Avenue in McCleary, Wash.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 - 5th Street in Hoquiam, Wash.

Zelda L. Crane

Zelda Lee Crane was born Sept. 12, 1942, to Lawrence and Helen Nation in Crawford, Neb. She passed away Feb. 12, 2016, in Olympia, Wash.

Zelda’s family moved from Crawford in 1946, living in various places until they settled in Portland, Ore., in 1948. She grew up in Portland, graduating from Franklin High School in 1960. She married Harold Crane Sept. 10, 1960, and moved with him to Everett, Wash., where their children were born. In 1967, they moved to the Grays Harbor area, settling in Aberdeen in 1969. Zelda worked as a waitress in Aberdeen at H.S. Kress and the Spar. Eventually, she went to work at Harbors Home Health & Hospice, first as a home health aide and then as a secretary. She retired in 2000. Zelda and Harold moved to Emnaha, Ore., and lived there for five years, returning to Aberdeen to be closer to family.

Zelda gave her life to Christ at the age of 12 years and attended a non-denominational fellowship in Montesano.

Zelda loved to sew and made most of her children’s clothes when they were young. During the past several years, she spent many hours working on embroidery projects, reading and visiting with family. Zelda also participated in a quilting group on Thursday mornings, working on her embroidery while her friends quilted.

Her husband Harold Crane survives her at the family home. Her children also survive her: Rynda and Daniel Hahn of Aberdeen; Larry and Connie Crane of McCleary and Lori Crane of Aberdeen. She had 12 grandchildren: Rebecca (John), Sarah (Carl), Amanda (Jeff), Travis, Echo, Hannah, Tyrell, JJ, Timmy, Mia, Caity and Audrey. She also had three great-grandchildren: Anna, PJ and Lucas. Her mother Helen Nation-Alyesworth of Stanwood, Wash., and her sister Gwen Chambers (John) of Albuquerque, N.M., also survive her. Her father Lawrence Nation preceded her in death.

There will be a memorial service Saturday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. in McCleary at the VFW Hall. A potluck will follow the service.

Martin Paulson

Martin Paulson passed away at his home on Feb. 13, 2016. He was born to Adolph and Rachel Paulson at North Bend, Wash., on July 16, 1918. His dad was a mill right in many locations before settling down in Malone. He graduated from Elma High School in 1938. He was the senior class president.

After high school he became a welder and fabricator in the Puget Sound area. This was disrupted by World War II, when he served in the Army and participated in the Battle of Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a sergeant. He never cared to talk much about the war until in his early 90s. His nephew’s wife wanted to write a book on his correspondence during the war to his sister, which was handed down to her. This resulted in the book Letters Home WWII and the Bronze Star.

After the war he spent time back at the ship yards, fishing crab. He owned a troller out of Westport; he also fell timber with a cross cut saw and developed his final trade as a cranberry farmer in Grayland.

In 1950 he married Mabel Heino which lasted 58 years until her death in 2008. From the mid 1960’s they spend part then all of their winters first in Bouse, Ariz., then Desert Hot Springs, Calif. They were a team on the cranberry farm. They spent quality time together at their cabin on Hood Canal which he built.

He is preceded in death by his parents Adolph and Rachel Paulson, his wife Mabel, sisters Myrle Rae, Ruth Furford, Karen Bauder, and a granddaughter Jennifer Paulson.

He is survived by his daughter Janice Scarbor of Freemont, Calif., a son Martin Paulson of Grayland, daughter-in-law Kris Paulson of Bay City, grandson Ryan (Collett), great-granddaughter Hannah, grandson Luke of Mount Lake Terrace.

Special thanks to Jane Brook for her lunches and friendship, Gail Furford, Pacific Care and Rehab and his final days the individuals of Harbors Home Health & Hospice along with Kelly Bearden.

The family suggests any memorials be made to the Jennifer Paulson Foundation at 2580 Montesano Road, Westport, WA 98595.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen, Wash. Cremation arrangements were in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Dorothy L. Holm

Lifetime resident of the Harbor, Dorothy L. Holm, died at her home in Aberdeen on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016. She was 93.

Dorothy was born in Portland, Ore., on July 15, 1922, the daughter of Ike and Ethel (Lyon) Davis. She came with the family as a baby to Hoquiam where she grew up and attended schools. In 1939 she married Clarence Holm in Hoquiam. He would pass away in 1975.

She was a homemaker but started work at Grays Harbor Veneer in the mill in 1970 and would retire in 1984. She liked gardening and canning what she grew, embroidery, steelhead fishing, had commercially dug clams and had been a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She also liked trips to Reno and other casinos.

Dorothy is survived by a daughter: Nancy and husband Steve Warnken, Montesano; and one grandchild, two great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Greg Holm in 2005 and her significant other, Kenneth Snyder in 2009.

A private cryptside service was held in the Mausoleum at Fern Hill cemetery, Aberdeen.

Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Richard Blumberg

SANDY, ORE. — Richard A. Blumberg, a longtime resident of Hoquiam, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 in Sandy, Ore. He was 75.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Coleman Mortuary Chapel in Hoquiam. Interment will follow at Hoquiam’s Sunset Memorial Park.

Andy Franich

Andy Franich, 94, lifetime harborite and former journeyman carpenter, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.

Andy was born on March 14, 1921 in Aberdeen to Frank A. and Kata (Vlatkovich) Franich. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1940 and then joined the US Army during WWII, and served in the China and India-Burma Campaigns. Upon his Honorable Discharge he returned to Aberdeen.

On April 17, 1948, Andy married Hoquiam native Diana V. Masnov in Hoquiam. She resides at the family home.

Andy worked last for Franciscovich Construction and also for other notable Grays Harbor Building contractors.

He was a lifetime member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Aberdeen Elks.

Andy is survived by his wife of 67 years, Diana Franich of Aberdeen; a son Frank A. Franich of Aberdeen and a daughter Jean M. (John) Larson of Pacific Beach, Wash.; two grandchildren: J.J. Larson, Long Beach, Calif. and Keegan Larson and wife Sarah, Jupiter, Fla. Andy was preceded in death by a brother George Franich and two sisters, Mary and Katie.

A private family graveside service took place at Fern Hill cemetery, Aberdeen.

Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Walter Robert Cooper (1969-2014)

Walter Robert Cooper passed away at his home in McCleary, Wash., on Friday Dec. 5, 2014. He was 45 years old. Walter was a longtime resident of Grays Harbor.

Walter was born Oct. 2, 1969, the son of Otis (Gary) Cooper and Betty Cooper. Walter was employed for 22 years with the State of Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, he was a volunteer fire fighter with the McCleary Fire Department from 1999-2009, he was a coach to many kids in the community, loved coaching sports, playing sports, hunting and fishing but most importantly he loved watching his son and daughter play sports and was their biggest fan.

Walter is survived by his father Otis (Gary) Cooper and mother Betty Cooper both of Orangeville, Utah, a son Joshua Cooper, 22 years old of McCleary, Wash., and a daughter Ashley Cooper, 18 years old, also of McCleary, Wash. A memorial service will be planned for the Spring in 2015, information to follow.
