Edna Viola Markley
Edna Viola Markley, age 100, longtime Hoquiam resident and former clerk with Grays Harbor County Treasurer’s Office, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, at Ocean Breeze Adult Home in University Place, Wash.
Edna was born on March 26, 1915, in Chicago, Ill., to Albert and Ethel (Fellows) Akers. The family later moved to Aberdeen, Wash., where she graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1933.
Edna married
Hugh Brown Markley in 1933. Hugh joined the US Navy during WW II. When her husband returned from the service, they moved to Hoquiam in 1947, where she lived until five years ago.
Edna was a member of the Hoquiam Grandmothers Club, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Eagles Ladies Auxiliary. She loved traveling and eating ice cream.
Edna is survived by two sons: Bill and wife Carol Markley of Lakewood, Wash., and Richard and wife Valerie of Shelton, Wash.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a few great-great-grandchildren. Edna was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Francis Akers.
Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, Wash. Edna will be inurned with her husband at Fern Hill cemetery.
Erin C. Shallcross Feb. 5, 1973 - Dec. 29, 2015
Erin Catherine Shallcross, beloved daughter of James Shallcross (Andrea) of Bishop, Calif., and Mary Martinson (Ken) of Kennewick, Wash., mother of Nicole Shallcross of Bishop, Calif., and sister of Jason Shallcross of Snohomish, Wash., passed away peacefully on Dec. 29, 2015.
She is remembered by her treasured friends and family for her shining spirit and her caring for people and animals in and around Westport, where she resided for the past 15 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PAWS of Grays Harbor, in her name. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Helen Marie Holt
Helen Marie Holt, a Thurston County resident for the past 4 years, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2015 at the Sequoia Assisted Living in Olympia; she was 96. Helen was born April 1, 1919 in Chehalis, Wash. and lived the majority of her life in Raymond, Wash.
She worked as a cook for the Raymond High School and also owned and operated a restaurant in Chehalis named the “Dinner Bell” with her late husband Glen who preceded her in death in January of 1977. Helen loved playing bingo in her spare time. Helen also enjoyed knitting and crocheting as well as traveling the United States. Helen enjoyed baking with her granddaughter and playing cards with her grandson.
Helen is survived by a daughter-in-law Susan Holt of Olympia, a granddaughter Julie Ryan (Kevin) of University Place, a grandson Aaron Holt of Olympia; nieces and nephews Janis Harner, Mark Crone, Wayne (Paula) Holt, Sandy Clinkscales Donna Judge (Alan), Steve and Kathy Holt all of San Diego, Calif. Helen was the last of seven siblings, Annie, Joe, Frank, John, June and Fran all preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 at Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond with interment to follow at the Fern Hill cemetery in Menlo.
James C. ‘Jim’ Jones
James C. “Jim” Jones, 54, a lifelong Harbor resident, died at his home in Elma, Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015. He was born in Aberdeen on March 25, 1961, the son of Jack and Patricia (Thorp) Jones.
He had attended Aberdeen schools and later worked in shingle mills, and as a log truck driver and cement mason for Rock Solid Concrete. He had also been a sawyer for B & J Lumber Yard.
Jim was a “rock hound” and enjoyed fishing and spending time with the grandkids.
He is survived by a son: Anthony “Tony” Jones, Federal Way; a daughter: Karina L. Jones, Olympia; his mother: Patricia “Patty” Jones, Elma; two brothers: Shannon, Elma and Donald, McCleary; four sisters: Karina Hankie, Stanwood, Wash., Lindy Larson, Forks, Jacklyn Davis, Grays Harbor City and Theresa Johnson, Elma; as well as four granddaughters: Andrea L. C. Jones, Loretta L.L. Jones, Addison K. M. Jones and Nevaeh S. Vera.
A gathering of friends and family will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, at North West Life Center Church, 215 N. 3rd St., Elma, WA 98541.

Jon Carlson Bugher June 3, 1946 - Jan. 6, 2016
Jon Bugher was born in Aberdeen, Wash., on June 6, 1946, the only child of Helen (Carlson) and Myron Bugher. He grew up in the Aberdeen and Cosmopolis areas, graduating from J. M. Weatherwax Sr. High School in Aberdeen part of the Class of 1964, with his wife of 38 years, Mary Elizabeth (Beth Matthews). He went to be with Jesus in the very early morning of Jan. 6, 2016, after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.
Jon married
Nancy Collins in May 1966 and enlisted in the Navy Jan. 12, 1967. To this union were born two children: David (1968) and Jennifer (1971). Jon served active duty in the Navy for nearly 6 years and received the National Defense Service Medal, as well as the First Good Conduct. Jon then served as Program Director for the YMCA in Elkton, Md. for about 2.5 years. Jon and Nancy later divorced, and he moved back to the Aberdeen area where he was working for the Grays Harbor Community Action Council when he reconnected with former classmate, Beth (Matthews) Houlton in the fall of 1975. Jon and Beth were married
Aug. 20, 1977, and became a blended family of five. Jon became “dad” to Beth’s three children, Charity (1967), Rick (1969), and Jim (1972) Houlton.
During the years that followed, Jon worked several other jobs that included Tribal Administration and Compliance Management with Quinault Indian Nation, Shoalwater Bay Tribe, and Suquamish Tribe. Jon’s most beloved job, however, was the one he retired from after 17 years of service. Jon served as Fire Chief for Fire District 2 in the area surrounding Port Angeles from October 1994 - December 2011. During this time, he was also commissioned as Deputy Sheriff of Clallam County on Jan. 20, 2009, in accordance with duties related to fire investigation. He was also a certified First Responder and EMT. He received Clallam County Sheriff’s Office’s Commendation Award in 2012.
Jon was a life-time member and past Exalted Ruler of the Aberdeen Elks Club. He was devoted to family through coaching baseball in Aberdeen, being a parent of four soccer players and a daughter who danced with Parks’ School of Dance, and playing part-time family “chaufeur” for his sons in cub scouts and a daughter in Girl Scouts, among other activities. After the kids were gone, he played doting Grandpa on all of his grandkids, plus some. He was a Master Gardener in retirement.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Myron Bugher and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Jon is survived by his wife: Mary Elizabeth (Beth Matthews) Bugher; five children: Charity (Paul) Oien of Independence, Iowa; Dave (Karena) Bugher of Aberdeen, Wash.; Rick (Cora) Houlton of Wasilla, Alaska; Jennifer (Dave) Short of Trapp, Md.; and Jim (Diane) Houlton of Raymond, Wash.; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
Before he passed, Jon expressed his wish that no flowers or gifts be sent, but instead please donate to either: Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, 540 E 8th St, Port Angeles, WA 98362 who provided both in home nursing care and equipment over the past year; or The Tall Elks of Aberdeen children’s fund.
Inurnment at Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen, Wash. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, Jan. 10, at the Aberdeen Elks Club. A Celebration of Life will also be held in Port Angeles by Fire District 2 on Sat, Jan. 16.
Karleen I. Vandenberg
Karleen Iris Vandenberg, 86, Grayland resident, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.
Iris was born on Feb. 26, 1929 in Portland, Ore. to Karl F. and Ivah N. (Powell) Meister. They moved to Spokane, Wash. where she graduated from Catholic School. Later she moved to Seattle where she married
Francis “Dutch” Vandenberg. He died Jan. 28, 2006.
They moved to Maple Valley where she owned and operated “Vandenberg’s Lilly Pad Ceramic Shop” in the 80’s and 90’s. In 1993, she moved to Grayland, Wash.
Iris loved cats and was active in Audubon Society, Boy’s Town and Westport Pirate’s.
She is survived by grandchildren: Jennifer, Mark, Nicole, Jason, Margo, Stacey and Tammy; numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter Ivah.
Per her request, there will be no services.

Lee Roy Suitter
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Lee R. Suitter. Born June 24, 1957 in Emmett, Idaho. He passed after battling health problems on Dec. 30, 2015 in Tacoma, Wash.
He is survived by his parents Charles Suitter and Joann Winkleblack, daughter Carie Frost, son-in-law Rick Frost, son Zachary Suitter, daughter-in-law Allison Suitter, daughter Sarah Palmer, granddaughters Micheala, Jessica, Holly, Brittney and Ashley, grandsons Nate, Caleb and Dylan, brothers Jay, Terry and Kim, sister Sherry and many nieces and nephews.
Lee was a long time resident of Westport, Wash. He loved the rain forest. As a lifetime logger he was happiest in the woods as many who knew him can tell you he had many great stories and loved telling any who might listen. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family.
Services are to be announced at a later time.
Wanda F. Vessey
Wanda Faye Vessey, 83, of Montesano, Wash. passed away at Montesano Health and Rehabilitation Center on Friday, Jan. 1, 2016. Wanda was born Jan. 20, 1932 in Montrose, Colo. to William and Virgie (Walker) Wilson.
On April 8, 1949 Wanda married
George P. Vessey in Aberdeen.
Wanda is survived by her loving children, daughter Darla (Corky) Watkins, sons Richard and George (Marlys) Vessey all of Elma; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband George, her sister Evelyn Wilson and brothers William and John “Jack” Wilson.
In lieu of flowers donations are in her memory are suggested to the American Red Cross.
A private graveside service will be held at Odd Fellows cemetery in Elma.
Arrangements are entrusted to Harrison Family Mortuary of Montesano.
Brian D. Bednarik
Brian David Bednarik went to be with the Lord on Jan. 4, 2016. He was 31 years old and loved by all who knew him. Brian was born Oct. 16, 1984. He lived out the Wishkah Valley in his younger years and attended Aberdeen Schools, graduating from Aberdeen High School in 2003. While in high school he was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football where he was voted Team MVP and All League Player.
Following high school, Brian attended the University of Washington, graduating in 2008 with degrees in Political Science and Economics as well as a certificate in European Studies.
After graduating from college Brian lived in Seattle for two years and worked as a broker. He then decided to return to the Harbor to be closer to his family and friends. During this time, he helped coach football at Miller Junior High while starting a new job at Timberland Bank. It was then that he met his future wife, Whitney, and fell in love with her. The couple was married
May 10, 2013.
Brian was known for his contagious smile and love for people. He also loved Husky football and he and Whitney had season tickets to all the games. He also tried to spend as much time as he could with his family.
Brian is survived by his wife, Whitney, daughter Rylee, unborn son yet to be named (in Feb.), sister Dana, mother Debbie and too many other family members to mention.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, at 11:30 a.m. at The Four Square Church in Central Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to an account at Twin Star Credit Union for the benefit of his children in attending college.
Charles “Packsack Louie” Clarke
Charles “Packsack Louie” Clarke died peacefully on Jan. 4, 2016 at Seamar in Seattle at the age of 86 and will be missed by all.
Louie grew up on a small farm in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. He joined the army at the age of 16 and was the radio operator and waist gunner on a B-17 flying fortress stationed in England. After leaving the army he logged up and down the west coast from the redwoods of northern California to the old growths of southeast Alaska, ending his logging career in the cedar forests of the Olympic Peninsula. Louie met Jane, the love of his life, while she was in Alaska working as a maternity nurse. They were married
for 38 years until she passed away in 2002. Louie and Jane were longtime residents of Grays Harbor.
There will be a graveside committal service at Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam on Friday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m., followed by a memorial at 619 First Street in Hoquiam. Please join Lyle and family and we will share our memories of Louie and Jane.

Edward Stolesen
Edward Stolesen, 86, passed away Dec. 31, 2015, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia. He was born in Aberdeen, but lived many years in California, Union, Wash., and recently moved to Elma. Ed graduated from Weatherwax High School and attended the University of Washington until going into the Navy and serving two years in Korea.
Ed is survived by his wife, Margaret, a son, Greg (Kandee) of Lakeport, Calif., grandsons Erik (Afton) of Sacramento, Brad also of California and Tyler Gile (Caroline), of San Angelo, Texas, and a step-daughter Molly McAffrey (Tom) of Elma. Preceding him in death were his first wife Nancy, father Trygve, mother Sigfrid, daughter Jan and brother Rolf.
Ed owned businesses in San Jose and Ukiah, manufacturing cargo container doors, pre-fab homes, produce containers, and Nash automobile seats. His great passion was flying and he had built an Osprey amphibian for recreation. He often mentioned that his most happy moments were spent flying over San Francisco at night and looking down on the lights. Ed was a life member of Lion’s Club International and along with Margaret, enjoyed helping the Hood Canal club with many projects.
A celebration of life is planned for 1 p.m. on Jan. 23 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 1200 Connection, in Shelton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The New Community Church of Union building fund at 951 E. Dalby Road, Union, WA 98592.
Elaine L. Anderson
Elaine Leslie Anderson, born July 4, 1957, passed away in Montesano, Wash., on Nov. 23, 2015, following a brief illness. Born to Arthur and Arlene (Cannon) Anderson she was a resident of Grays Harbor her entire life. Elaine first lived in East Hoquiam on the Humptulips River, later moving with her family to the Wynooche Valley in Montesano.
Elaine graduated from Montesano in 1976. After graduation she traveled to the Gulf of Mexico to visit an exchange student from high school. Elaine returned to Montesano and worked at the Bee Hive Restaurant.
She had two children she cherished, a son Jesse Ryan Rogstad of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and a daughter, Jessica Kuzmak and grandson of Aberdeen, Wash. She is also survived by her sister Claudia Anderson of Bellingham and brothers David and Ted Anderson of Montesano. She had many nieces and nephews, including Rachelle Pullar of Montesano and Charity Jacobsen of Bellingham, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents, her older brother Arthur G. Anderson Jr. and older sister Mary E. Anderson.
Elaine was a thoughtful person and enjoyed people, and her two kitties Thomas and Little Gray. She loved drawing and writing, and would often send special greeting cards to her friends and family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Memorial Service for Elaine will be held on Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Montesano United Methodist Church located at 401 E. Spruce Ave. in Montesano.
Rose G. Wayman
Rose Genevieve Wayman, beloved mother, 92 years of age of Hoquiam, passed away on Jan. 7, 2016 at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam. She was born on Jan. 26, 1923, in Aberdeen, Wash. Her parents, Felix and Martha Borek, immigrated from Poland through Ellis Island with other family members. They moved to the Bear Gulch area in Aberdeen where they raised their five children on their farm.
She attended Aberdeen schools and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1941. She then attended the Business College in Aberdeen.
Rose married
Guy Nelson Wayman Jr. on April 25, 1943. He was drafted soon after and Rose went back to live with her family on the farm until Guy was discharged from the Army. They moved to Hoquiam where they raised their three children.
In 1960 Rose took a job as head cashier for McCaw Cable in Aberdeen. Later it became Cox Cable where she worked for many years until Guy fell ill and Rose retired. She enjoyed all of her co-workers and customers and was known for her friendliness to everyone.
Her family always came first. She loved family celebrations and a good old Polish celebration with her extended family. She was very proud of her Polish heritage.
When her children were growing up she was very involved with Cub Scouting, serving as a Den Mother for both of her boys. She maintained contact, until her death, with several of those who considered her their second mother.
In her later years she loved to work in her garden, raising flowers. She also liked to play bingo with her friends and take trips to Reno. Her other travels had taken her to Hawaii with her son and daughter on several occasions as well as trips to Disneyland, Eagle Crest in Bend, Ore. and to various parts of the Oregon Coast. She always went with her family and good friends. People enjoyed her company and she made everyone’s day brighter.
Above all else she will be remembered for her love of her family and friends. From growing up on the family farm with her brothers and sisters to her own children - they were her focus and her life. She was there with her support with no reservations and all of her love.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Guy Nelson Wayman, Jr. in 1986; her sisters, Millie (Svarre) Hazelquist, Wanda Weber, Annie (Carlton) Williams; brother, Walter Borek and grandson, David Wayman; and a special niece Evelyn (Johnson) Erickson.
Rose is survived by her three children, Dave Wayman (Carol), Sherry Cook and Richard Wayman; a sister-in-law, Carol Borek; a grandson, James Smith; three granddaughters, Briana Smith, Traci Sandstrom (Jim), Chera Smith; four great-grandsons, Dominic Stolen, David Sandstrom, Conner Stolen and Christian Gleeson; three great-granddaughters, Piper Sandstrom, Dannah Gleeson, Jade Sandstrom and many extended family members.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at the Coleman Mortuary, 422 - 5th Street in Hoquiam.
The Recitation of the Rosary will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14, and will be followed by a Funeral Mass that will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Thursday, Jan. 14 at the Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church, 200 L Street in Hoquiam.
Concluding service and vault interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam. A time of fellowship will follow in the church social hall.
