Dolores Alwood
Dolores Alwood’s life ended peacefully on Wednesday morning, Dec. 9, 2015, at the Queen Anne Manor in Seattle where she had resided for the past year. She was 93.
Dolores was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Aberdeen, Wash. on Aug. 4, 1922, to Matthew and Ella (Murphy) Kerr. She lived in Brady, Montesano and Aberdeen while growing up with her three brothers, Charles, Walter and Robert and her sister, Eileen and a number of cousins. She attended grade school in Brady and graduated from Montesano High School in 1940.
Following her high school graduation, Dolores initially secured a position working for the then president of the Grays Harbor Business College, partly in exchange for tuition, but then decided on a career change and went to work at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the diet kitchen. She lived at the hospital, worked hard for $40 a month and waited for Saturday night to head to the Dreamland in Hoquiam to dance. It was there that she met her future husband, Horace Alwood. The relationship flourished until, like many young men at that time, Horace joined the Army and headed to California for training. Shortly after he departed, two young women, Dolores and Vivian, one of Horace’s sisters, boarded a bus for California. Dolores married
Horace at Minter Field in Bakersfield, Calif. on July 29, 1942. She then traveled with Horace during his many training posts until he was deployed overseas. Returning to Aberdeen, Dolores attended Grays Harbor Business College and worked at the Assessor’s Office in Montesano. On Horace’s return, they lived a few years in Aberdeen and then moved to Hoquiam in 1952 where they raised their family. Horace died, too young, in 1973. Dolores then went to work at the St. Joseph Hospital admitting office and moved to Aberdeen in 1976.
Dolores was an active member of Our Lady of Good Help Catholic parish and St. Anthony’s Guild, volunteering for many church and school functions during her years in Hoquiam and St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the St. Elizabeth Guild during her years in Aberdeen.
Dolores loved family gatherings, including the competitive card games. She also belonged to a Canasta Club and she and Horace continued their love for dancing, attending the annual Truckers Ball and hosting parties at their home. She was blessed with many very close friends during her time in Hoquiam and Aberdeen. She was an active member of a group of mom’s in her Hoquiam neighborhood who met for coffee virtually every day of the work week for 20+ years … providing support to each other while raising their children, losing their husbands and just having fun with good friends. Overriding all of these relationships though was her lifelong very close relationship with her sister, Eileen. It was special. They talked every day, provided loving support to each other and would at least once a week break out in hysterical laughter over something that struck them as incredibly humorous. They shared a joy for life together and many “blizzards” from Dairy Queen.
Dolores is survived by her son, Greg (Marybeth) Alwood; daughters, Colleen (Gary) Fikse and Teresa (Michael) Elstad; her nine grandchildren, Dr. Ashley Alwood, Darcie (Neal) Moeller, Andrew (Marissa) Alwood, Tyler Alwood, Melissa Fikse, Tommy Fikse, Samuel Fikse, Katie Elstad and Jacob Elstad, and a very recent arrival, her great- grandson, Walter Moeller. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace, her three brothers, Charles Kerr, Walter Kerr and Robert Kerr and her sister, Eileen (Kerr) Alwood.
The family wishes to acknowledge the special care provided to their mother by two very special caregivers during the last few years. Linda Gould from Aberdeen and Shoko Espinoza from Queen Anne Manor in Seattle provided comfort and care to Dolores and a very loving friendship that was extraordinary during the last years of her life.

Marie N. Berglund
Marie Niemi Berglund was born Nov. 24, 1925, in Portland, Ore. Marie passed Nov. 20, 2015, surrounded by family. As a teen Marie moved to Helena, Mont., where she graduated high school. Following high school, Marie attended the University of Montana where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After graduation she continued her life in San Francisco where she met her future husband Wesley Berglund. The newlywed couple relocated to Aberdeen, Wash., when Wes established an engineering firm in the city. Once in Aberdeen, Wes and Marie began to settle down. In their new home they formed friendships that are sure to last longer than a lifetime and raised three boys: Tom (Sabine), Steve (Sandy), and Dave (Denise). Marie was blessed with five grandchildren; Max, Julia, Olivia, Molly, and Maverick. Remembered as a gracious hostess and friend, Marie participated in both the P.E.O. and the Aberdeen Review Club. She was admired by all for her support and care of Wesley after he suffered a major stroke. Marie loved to have fun and enjoyed a “new outfit” when the occasion called for one; in fact, just days before her passing she asked Dave to take her to Nordstrom as she needed to “spiff up” her wardrobe! The family will celebrate her life at their family beach cabin Bayshore, where many timeless memories were created, this summer.

John (Jack) W. Wilkinson Sr.
John (Jack) W. Wilkinson Sr., age 87, passed away peacefully at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia on Dec. 7, 2015. John was born in Milton, Mass., on Dec. 2, 1928, and moved to Hoquiam in 1963, where he lived with his family near Copalis Crossing for many years.
As a young man of 22, and after leaving the Navy, he had been living in Port Maitland, Nova Scotia, near the Bay of Fundy, where he enjoyed riding his 1945 Harley Davidson model 45 Flathead. In 1950 he decided it was time to “hit the road” and made plans with his two ridding buddies. On departure day however, both buddies copped out. With a smile on his face and the wind in his hair, he headed south on his own with a lofty goal to circumnavigate the United States. He rode that old “45” all the way down the East coast and across the Southern US, making it as far as Southern California, where he met Avis Hill. (Passed in 1996 at age 63 in Hoquiam) They married
after several months, and begin raising their five children; John Jr., Randy, Tom, Dan and Mardi Hammer.
In 1963, it was time to hit the road again, but this time it would not be solo on the “45”! They packed up the wagon (the ‘59 Plymouth wagon) and headed north to Hoquiam, where Avis’s family had homesteaded before there was a road from Chenois Creek to Hoquiam.
John (Jack) retired from Lamb Grays Harbor Co. in 1990, where he spent most of his working career as an assembly machinist. At home, he worked the family sawmill he built, and raised some cattle while enjoying the country life. In retirement, John became an accomplished fisherman and RC pilot, and enjoyed building his own airplanes. He and Avis also had a passion for traveling in their Airstream trailer. They were active in the Wally Byam Caravan Club where John became President of the Eastern Oregon Chapter. In 1991, one year after his retirement, he and Avis traveled in the Airstream back to his roots in Port Maitland, via the “northern route”. So, after 41 years from starting his ambitious motorcycle journey, he finally made it full circle, back to Nova Scotia and the place he called home at 22.
John is survived by two sisters, Helen and Dorothy of Ontario, Canada, four sons, one daughter and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His daughter, granddaughters and great-granddaughters will always remember John calling them his “princess.”
John will be buried with his wife Avis, at Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam after a private family inurnment.
Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 5th Street in Hoquiam.

Timothy Martin Olden
Timothy Martin Olden, passed away peacefully on Dec. 19, 2015, at home, surrounded by family and dearest friends, after a year long battle with cancer. He was 55.
Tim was born in Puyallup, Wash., July 19, 1960, to Carol (Sorenson) McCowan and Ernie Olden. The family moved to Montesano in 1967, where Tim attended school until graduating in 1978.
Tim worked many jobs in the grocery business. For the last 30 years he worked for Frito-Lay as a salesman. He was in the process of retiring when he passed.
Tim married
Monica Adams, April 1, 1989. Tim loved his family. His son’s were the light of his life. And when Jaegger married
his high school sweetheart, Tim couldn’t have been happier to have the daughter he never had.
Yearly camping trips to Lake Chelan and many trips to Disneyland were favorite vacations with his family. He was also an avid backpacker, dragging his family and scouts all over the Olympics, sometimes kicking and screaming. He loved being part of nature and sharing that love with anyone who would be brave enough to join him.
Tim’s greatest passion was Boy Scouts. His involvement with the organization spanned 30+ years. He firmly believed in all it stood for. He gave all his free time mentoring and guiding boys to be successful and functioning parts of society. He touched so many lives with his kindness, humor and dedication. He was definitely not a traditional Scout leader, but however unorthodox his leadership was, he always made it fun and productive.
Time was the recipient of many Scout awards, the highest being the Silver Beaver. But his proudest accomplishment will always be that his two son’s achieved Eagle status.
Tim never turned down an opportunity to help with whatever his son’s were involved in, swim team, marching band, etc. always with a smile and his corny jokes.
He is survived by his wife, Monica, sons Levi Olden and Jaegger (Sarah) Olden, Mother, Carol McCowan, brothers Mike (Kelly) Olden, of Olympia, Wash. Kevin (Mary Jo) Olden of Adrian, Mich. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernie Olden and beloved in-laws, Art and Sylvia Adams.
