Dorothy “Dotty” L. Davis
Dorothy “Dotty” Lavonne Davis — wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to many — passed away peacefully at her home in Longbranch, Wash. on Oct. 17, 2015. Dorothy woke up every morning so grateful to being living where she did on Felucy Bay.
Dorothy was born on March 13, 1940 to Walt and Marguerite Johannes in McCleary, Wash., the fourth of eight children. She was raised in Elma where she attended Elma schools. In 1957 she met and married
Rollo Gould. They had three children and lived in Federal Way at the time of his death in 1965. She then moved back home to Elma to be with her family. She went to work for the Elma Post Office where she was loved by so many local folks. In 1970 she married
Mike Murphy; they later divorced.
In 1979 she became a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, which she credits for saving her life. She went back to school and became a Chemical Dependency Counselor. She worked at TAMARC in Olympia, where she met her life-long sponsor Josie. In 1982 she moved to Longview, Wash. to take a job at the CareUnit Inpatient Treatment Unit, and became a counselor. Dorothy had a gift of helping people. She touched hundreds of lives in her service of helping others who were struggling with addiction. It was at the CareUnit where she met the love of her life, Dr. James Davis. They married
in 1987 in Longview, surrounded by their families and many friends. They lived in Rainier, Ore. and Dorothy taught Chemical Dependency classes at Lower Columbia Community College. When she decided to retire, she became a city council board member in Rainier, and was then appointed the City Mayor in 1989. She also became a Hospice volunteer and comforted several patients and their families.
In 1995, Jim and Dorothy began looking for a place on the water where they could retire and keep their beloved sailboat “Bolero.” They found their perfect spot in 1997 on Felucy Bay and moved to Longbranch fulltime in 2001. Dorothy loved to garden and took great pride in her roses. She was very active in her church and Stephen Ministry. She enjoyed their trips to Maui in January for several years. She loved going to lunch at the “Tea Room” with her dear friends Kay, Julie and Ruth and eating coconut cream pie.
Dorothy just LOVED LIFE and the color BLUE! Her spirit was so gracious, up until the very end. She rarely complained, in spite of her pain. She was a great encourager and supporter of her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She never forgot a birthday! She was the definition of “thoughtfulness.” She knew how lucky and blessed she was and never took that for granted. She so enjoyed being at home cooking, sewing, “puttering” and taking care of Jim. She was loved by so many friends and will be missed by all.
Left to honor Dorothy and remember her love, is her husband Jim of Longbranch, daughter Diana Murphy of Olympia, son Doug Gould (Robin) of Falls River and son Darin Murphy( Sonia) of Hsinchu, Tawain, Wendy and Johnathon Cooley of Salt Lake City, Utah, Erik and Vanessa Davis of Beaverton, Ore. and Luke Davis of Gilbert, Ariz. Brothers Wally of Elma, Jan of Lakeview Terrace, Calif., sisters Jeannie of Elma, Peggy of McCleary and Celia of Sebastopol, Calif. Dorothy had 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Clifford, her sister Marion and nephew Danny.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held on Oct. 31, 2015, at the Key Peninsula Lutheran Church, 4213 Lackey Road, KP N Hwy, Lakebay, WA 98349 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions to the American Cancer Society or your local Hospice be made in Dorothy’s name.
