Claribel Karshner Snider (“Kebby/Kibby”), 78, surrounded by loving family and friends, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015 at Bremerton Harrison Hospital.

After meeting William D. (Bill) Snider (1937-2015) during the summer of 1953 at Aberdeen Lake (instantly knowing he was the one for her, as he became “the love of her life!”), she attended the University of Washington as a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority with her childhood sweetheart, marrying in February, 1957 and having three children prior to moving their young family to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1966, where she lived until 1996 after their 21-year marriage.
She also attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where her favorite class was Criminal Justice, although she later became a teacher’s aide at Chena Elementary School, and finally a para-educator. Eventually she settled permanently in Belfair, Wash. in 1997, where her daughter, Gretchen Claire, and her oldest son, David Paul, moved in 2001, with her youngest William Jacob (“B.J.”) visiting twice, whom she recently saw on a “bucket-list” train trip to Arizona this spring with her daughter. She and her ex-husband remained good friends, seeing him for the last time in September 2014 with his wife of almost 15 years, Diane {Heagy} Snider, of Anchorage, Alaska, “hosting” and her daughter and husband enjoying the “family reunion.”
She did finally finish her two-year Elementary Education degree at Grays Harbor Community College in 1989, with a trip to London, England and surrounding areas as an “exchange student” at age 52, after “backpacking” down the Al-Can Highway from Fairbanks through Canada with her oldest, David, an “avid hitchhiker, ” in 1987, when she was 50. She then “rebuilt” her grandfather’s summer cabin on Hood Canal after the 1996/97 ice storm, where she lived out her remaining years, working for Hood Canal Schools from 2002-2012, after having worked on the Alyeska Pipeline for over 20 years.
Mom will be mostly cherished and remembered for her hard work, her generosity, her love of hiking with family and friends, her devotion to her children, and her love of singing (Sweet Adelines), music, dancing and especially lifetime enjoyment of sports and drama (acting in many plays on Harstine Island), along with maintenance of friendships.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her two aunts (Gretchen Hodges Ellefson and Mary Louise {Karshner} Larson), uncle-in-law (Seibert Larson), cousin-in-law (Hartley Rogers, Jr.), and her brother, Paul, along with numerous Karshner ancestors as noted in the Karshner (Memorial) Museum, 309 4th St. NE, Puyallup, WA 98372.

Emmy Lou Mehlhoff
On Sept. 2, 2015, The Heavens embraced the gentle soul of Emmy Lou Mehlhoff.
Emmy was born to Jenny (Hesten) and Jacob Hesteness on Dec. 22, 1927 in Woodworth, N.D. While growing up in nearby Pettibone, she spent her school years attending a one-room school house. Upon the completion of her final exams, Emmy returned to the little schoolhouse to teach 8th grade English.
On Aug. 4, 1946, Emmy married
her sweetheart, Dellas Eugene Mehlhoff, from nearby Tuttle, N.D. They moved shortly, thereafter, to Hoquiam and then to Aberdeen, where they permanently resided.
Emmy was quick to make friends. Her circle was large and varied. It was an inclusion of the many people with whom she had worked over the course of 50 plus years, as well as those she had encountered through her hours of volunteer work.
Throughout the fifties, she had been employed by West Coast Fish Company. When the sixties approached, Emmy made a change and worked at S.H. Kress. It was then that she began her career in retail sales.
Emmy specialized in children’s clothing. Throughout the seventies and early eighties, she was employed by Pearson’s Department Store in Aberdeen, as head buyer and manager of their children’s clothing department. Her expertise was highly regarded and made for long time customers, many of whom became longtime friends. Upon the store’s closing, she went to work at Lamont’s in Aberdeen, until her retirement in 1992.
As a member of the local Retail Clerks Union, Emmy had also proudly served as a union representative. Her skill and stalwartness throughout the mediating process earned her great respect amongst her colleagues on both sides of the negotiation table.
Emmy was passionately committed to her family and friends. No one ever went away from her table hungry, and she selflessly volunteered her time, where needed, to ensure everyone’s well-being.
In the fifties and sixties, she had been very active in Little League, Babe Ruth, and P.T.A. Emmy had even played the position of point guard for the P.T.A’s all-women basketball team.
She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, and her membership in The Sons of Norway. She gave a lot of her time to serving dinners and in making lutefisk and lefsa for the club.
Emmy was warm company to the many senior citizens whom she transported to and from their medical appointments. She shared her laugh and her gentle touch with the nursing home residents at GHCH East Campus, as she pampered them weekly with haircare services.
Emmy and Dellas enjoyed dancing at the Aberdeen Eagles. They also enjoyed dancing at the Aberdeen Elks Lodge #593, where Dellas was an active member. Emmy was a charter member of The Ladies of the Elks (L.O.E.) and donated countless hours in raising money for the various events the club has sponsored throughout the years.
Kind, caring, loving, nurturing. This mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend, Emmy L. Mehlhoff, was preceded in death by her brothers Gerald Hestness and Donald Hestness; her sister Doris Weichel; her nephew, Brett Mehlhoff, Jr.; and her husband of 55 years, Dellas E. Mehlhoff.
Emmy is survived by her adoring family: daughter, Marilyn (Russ) of Beaverton, Ore.; sons Brett (Carol) Mehlhoff of Jacksonville, Fla., Donovan (Betty) Mehlhoff of Tacoma, Wash., and Craig (Pamela) Mehlhoff of Aberdeen, Wash.
She is also survived by 11 cherished grandchildren, 10 treasured great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Emmy’s life will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at the Aberdeen Elks Lodge #593, 1712 S. Boone St., Aberdeen, Wash.
