Shelline Deanna Lucas
(March 6, 1944 - December 27, 2012)

Shelline (Shelly) Lucas of Napavine passed away Thursday, December 27th, 2012 at the age of 68. Shelly was born in Spokane, Washington to William and Geraldine Yarbough. She ws preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jim Lucas. No services are currently planned at the request of the deceased. Arrangements are under the direction of Cattermole Funeral Home in Winlock.

Joan Lea Smith

Joan Lea Smith, 72, entered into peace on Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, at Spring Creek Memory Care in Idaho after complications from Alzheimers. She left behind her husband, Harold Smith, Wenatchee, Wash., son, Keith Hliboki, Montesano, Wash., daughter, Laura (Kelly) Rhinehart, Fruitland, Idaho, daughter, Tiffany (Jason) Joines, Boardman, Ore., stepdaughter Peggy (Hal) Williamson, Hoquiam, Wash., stepson, Lee Smith, Aberdeen, Wash., 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Joan was born April 28, 1942, in Wenatchee, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Thelma Harberson and her husbands, Jerry Hliboki and Dale Crites. Joan graduated from Mt. Vernon H.S. in 1960 and enjoyed going to numerous class reunions.

Joan was an amazing cook and hostess and loved to cook for family and friends. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and all types of crafts. She was very artistic and loved to draw and paint and many times painted windows during the holidays for local businesses. Joan loved to go camping, spend time outdoors and loved almost any critter, big or small. A very special thanks to the staff at Spring Creek of Fruitland and Heart and Home Hospice for the wonderful and compassionate care and friendship provided for Joan and her family.

Please join us in honoring Joan’s life at a memorial service at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, at Montesano Assembly of God, 125 S Sylvia St, Montesano.

Delores Sanderson Cornwell

Delores Sanderson Cornwell, age 73, longtime resident of Montesano, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014. She kept a strong and positive attitude while battling health issues over the last couple years. She was born on Jan. 28, 1941, in Seattle, Wash., to Roy and Maudie Sanderson.

She graduated from Aberdeen High School and later married Kenneth Cornwell Sr. on June 20, 1959. Together they raised three children. She enjoyed fishing, clam digging and gardening. Delores retired from Grays Harbor Community Hospital as a Dietary Aide.

She will be greatly missed and is survived by her children; Kenneth Cornwell Jr. (Lisa), Valerie Sorensen(Dale), and Jeannette Smiley, sister; Darlene Harner (Phil), brothers; Wayne Sanderson (Joyce), and Delbert Sanderson (Cheryl). She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Alicia and Jason Cornwell, Kristina Cooper (Keith), Dave Sorensen (Sharon), Stephanie, Erica (Tyson), and Chelsea Smiley and six great­-grandchildren; Karl and Kellen Cooper, Anaiha, Justyne and Reegan Sorensen and Landon Henson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ronnie Sanderson, her husband, Kenneth Cornwell and son-in-law, Tom Smiley.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Wynooche cemetery in Montesano, Wash., with a reception to follow at the Montesano Moose Lodge, 3 Monte-Elma road. Donations in her memory may be made to the Montesano Volunteer Fire Department, 310 E. Pioneer, Montesano, Wash.

Mary Antonia Eisenhower

Mary Antonia Eisenhower, 65, of Aberdeen, Wash., passed away on Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, surrounded by her loved ones.

She is survived by daughters Kimberly Eisenhower, Kathryn Girardi and son Anthony Eisenhower, as well as grandsons Wyatt Schisler, Conor Jolly and granddaughter Ella Girardi and son-in-law Ken Girardi. She is also survived by siblings Jeannie, Sue, John, Tony, Joe and Vickie D’Amato.

Mary was born in Los Angeles, Calif., in May of 1949, to Sylvio and Regina D’Amato. One of seven children, she always reminisced about spending the summers in their family cabin in Crestline, Calif. She moved to Grays Harbor in 1974.

Mary touched the lives of so many people with her kindness and generous heart. She greeted everyone with a big smile and was always willing to help a friend or stranger in need. She dedicated free time toward n volunteering and fundraising for cancer research. You would see her every year at the “Relay for Life” supporting fellow cancer survivors. She truly enjoyed helping others in need. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her children, grandchildren and her beloved dog Keicko.

Please join us for a celebration of life at Anne Marie’s Café in Aberdeen from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Mary Eisenhower’s name to the Virginia Mason Sweet Charity Program.

Laura Marie Linnenkohl Ellis

Laura Ellis was born May 30, 1929, to Ernest C. and Alice (Alexander) Linnenkohl at her family’s home on Lafayette Street in North Aberdeen, and died at her home in Aberdeen, Monday, Nov. 10, 2014. She attended Alexander Young Grade School, Miller Junior High School and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1947. She attended Grays Harbor College for two years.

Her family owned Linnenkohl’s Hardware, which first opened in 1936. She began working in her family business at the age of 6, holding gunnysacks to be filled with coal and sold for 50 cents each. After the 10th grade she became the bookkeeper for the business. She was very shy and didn’t help customers at first. The family business was hardware and furniture, both new and used and later rental apartments.

Following a 10-year marriage to William W. Ellis, and living in Kirkland, she returned to the family business in 1966 and assumed ownership of the store and managed it for over 30 years, retiring in 1997.

Laura was a member of the Aberdeen and Hoquiam Eagles Auxiliary and served as president of the Aberdeen Auxiliary in 1994. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, and after taking organ lessons at the age of 50, she served as the summer organist for several years.

In her early years she was active in the Civilian Air Patrol, bowled on the Hayes Dairy Bowling Team and loved to dig clams. She was a member of the Nu Beta Phi Sorority and was an honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi. Laura was also a member of the KBKW Mug Club. She was on the AHS Class of 1947 reunion committee for many years and was in a Birthday Club with many of her childhood friends. Laura loved the color red, wearing hats and was known for riding around town on her electric scooter.

At the age of 36 she was afflicted with M.S., which took doctors eight years to diagnose and name. She didn’t let it slow her down and kept busy playing the piano, organ, harmonica and ukulele. She was a member of the Salmonberry Band. She liked to work with stained glass, build and furnish doll houses, braid rugs, refurbish furniture, make jewelry and knit sweaters, slippers and afghans. She also made pressed flower greeting cards that she would send to her family and friends.

Laura is survived by her three children, Jacque Ellis and her husband Kirk Miller of Olympia, Jim of Olympia and Jeff of Rainier, Ore.; a sister, Mary Mifflin of Seattle and many much loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, an older brother, Ernie Linnenkohl, her special friend of 35 years, Francis Seyler and her favorite dog, Annie.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to her doctors, nurses and caregivers, Lori, Avis, Julie and Jazzmyn. Also the Aberdeen Police, Fire Department and ambulance crew, for responding many times over the years and for their dedication to caring for others.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Aberdeen First United Methodist Church, followed by a reception at the Aberdeen Museum of History in the Armory Building on 3rd Street.

The family suggests memorial donations in honor of Laura be made to the Linnenkohl Family Scholarship, c/o Grays Harbor College Foundation, 1620 Edward P. Smith Drive, Aberdeen, WA 98520, or to the Timberland Regional Library Foundation, P.O. Box 14178 Tumwater, WA 98511.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home, 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen.

Jerry Frederick Jez

Jerry Frederick Jez, 93, a lifelong resident of Grays Harbor, died Nov. 12, 2014, while living at Gulke Manor in Montesano.

Jerry was born in Aberdeen, Wash. on June 18, 1921, to Josephine and Fred Jez. He was schooled in Aberdeen and graduated from Weatherwax High School.

He served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific which took him to Papua, New Guinea, Bougianville in the Solomon Island and he was in on the invasion of Luzon in the Philippines. When the war was over, he transferred from the 37th infantry Division to one of the first military units being sent to Japan.

After the Army, Jerry worked at Acme Door then at A.J. West School as a custodian where you would often time see him giving boys free haircuts during lunch or after school. In 1961 he bought John’s Place in South Aberdeen, a combination tavern and sporting goods store, which he operated until he retired in 1972.

In 1975 he moved to Westport to be near the ocean he always loved. After winter storms he would comb the beach looking for wood that came ashore to use for the various wood projects he made. He made jewelry boxes, Christmas decorations, hutches, porch swings, beautiful desks and dressers as gifts for the family. During Christmas time Jerry would be in the shop making items to give to “Toys for Tots.”

Jerry was an avid fisherman and would take family members and friends salmon fishing on the Jezebel whenever he could or load the small boat and head up river by himself. Jerry loved to hear the fishing stories his great-grandson Griffin had to tell him when the family came to visit Jerry at Gulke Manor.

Jerry was a member of the Aberdeen Eagles, Aerie 24, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans, and a life member of the GH Geology and Gem Society.

In 1947 he married Rudy Stolp, who died in 1951. In 1962 he married Helen Hubbard who died in 1986. Survivors include daughters Linda Brown of Tacoma, Barbara Burton of Central Park, stepdaughter Dorothy Kane of Olympia, son Clifford Jez of Cosmopolis, stepsons Bill Hubbard of Monroe, Wis. and Calvin Hubbard of Olympia. There are 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no funeral, and he will be cremated.

The Jez family would like to thank the doctors, VA people who helped us, and especially Carleen, her lovely children who played games with Jerry, and the wonderful staff at Gulke Manor for the loving care Jerry received while living there. We are so very grateful for everything you did for Jerry to make him feel at home and enjoy the time he had left.

ANN MERGENS

Ann was born in Denver, Colo., and passed away peacefully at her home in Raymond on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014. Ann was married to Dick for 62 years. She was employed by Timberland Regional Library in Raymond for several years and was an administrative assistant in the Pacific County Juvenile Court for many years before retiring in 1994.

Ann was a very giving, compassionate person. Throughout the years, she donated countless hours to many charitable organizations in the community. Many people will remember Ann by her Meanderings columns in the local papers.

Ann had battled her illness bravely and without complaint for many months with support from her friends, caregivers, and family members. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Raymond to celebrate Ann’s life. In lieu of flowers, at her request, donations may be made to HAVA, Willapa Harbor Helping Hands, or a charity of your choice.

Dianne L. Lemermeier
(July 25, 1952 - December 22, 2012)

Diane Lemermeier of Chehalis passed away at her home on December 22, 2012 at the age of 60. No services have been planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Cattermole Funeral Home in Winlock.

Dean Carter

Dean Carter, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 10, 2014. Dean was born on Sept. 15, 1936, to Percy and Delora Carter in Hoquiam, Wash.

Dean is survived by his wife, Sharon Carter of 58 years, his 3 children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, his faithful dog Molly and horse Scout, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dean received his Master’s of Education. He spent 58 years fulfilling his dream of being a teacher, administrator and coach.

There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, at Skyview High School Auditorium, 1300 NW 139th St. Vancouver, Wash. 98685 at 1 p.m.

Larene V. Swanson

Larene V. Swanson passed away on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014, with her daughter, Lynn Victoria Jenkins and grandson, Benjamin Carson, by her side, at Providence St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia. She had just celebrated her 90th Birthday on Nov. 2, 2014.

Larene was born to Hulda Victoria and Arthur Linus Drugge in Montesano, Wash., on Nov. 2, 1924. She graduated from Montesano High School in 1942. Larene was an outstanding student. She graduated with honors and perfect attendance. Her beautiful penmanship was her trademark. Larene was a commencement speaker and received the American Legion Citizenship Award which recognizes qualities of character, service, companionship and scholarship. She was active in many school activities such as girls club, drama, golf and bowling. She was a lifetime member in the Ladies Auxillary. ln support of her husband’s love for Appaloosa horses, was secretary treasurer for the South West Washington Regional Appaloosa Club (SWWRApC) for many years and supported the National Appaloosa Association as well. Until recently she still provided a year-end audit and financial statements for SWWRApC. Larene was excellent in math and after high school initially worked for the draft board, before starting her career at Whitney’s in Montesano.

In 1966 she married Wendell Swanson in Olympia where they raised their blended family of six children. Larene spent the majority of her career working as an accountant for the Edward Hulbert businesses in the Olympia area, and eventually opened her own accounting business, Swanson’s Accounting Services, which she maintained until her retirement.

Larene was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Wendell Eugene Swanson, at the age of 94 years, in March, 2012; daughters, Leslie Ann Carson and Wendy Scheibel; a sister, Mildred Drugge Major and brother, Arthur Drugge.

Larene is survived by her children, Lynn Victoria Jenkins of Lacey, Tim Swanson of Seattle, Shelley Barclift (Dave) of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Rob Swanson (Betsy) of Whitefish, Mont.; son-in-law, Chuck Scheibel of Olympia; older brother, Arnold Drugge of Hoquiam; younger brother, Everett Drugge (Diane) of Darien, Conn.; 18 grand and great-grand-children.

A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at Mills and Mills Funeral Home, 5725 Littlerock Road, Tumwater, WA 98512. The family suggests donations to the SWWRApC, P.O. Box 763 E. Olympia, WA 98540.

Bruce O’Brien

Bruce O’Brien, 81, longtime resident of Hoquiam passed away on November 14, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving wife, son and daughter. Bruce was born to Anna L. Loman Whitehouse on January 10, 1933.

An avid outdoorsmen, he shared his passion for hunting, fishing and his love for animals with his kids and grandkids. As a young man he volunteered for the Civil Air Patrol, rescue diver for the Grays Harbor Sheriffs Department and spent time as President for the Association of N.W. Steelheaders local chapter. Bruce had fond memories working for his Uncle Hank Loman who owned a local service station on Simpson Ave. He later became a sheet metal worker and spent his career working for Pryde Bros. located in Hoquiam.

He is survived by his wife, Lou Jean; son, Scott O’Brien; daughter and son-in-law, Kristi and David Lawrence. There are five grandkids that lovingly call him Grandpa and will carry very special memories.

A special thank you to the Larsen family and the entire crew at Duffy’s Restaurant for hosting, entertaining and loving Bruce for the past several decades.

No formal services will be held. Please send memorials to the First Presbyterian Church of Hoquiam, 210 “K” Street, Hoquiam WA 98550.

Ronald Joseph Jasper

Ronald Joseph Jasper, 87, a resident of Hoquiam, died at the Port Orchard Veteran’s Home on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014.

Ron was born in Aberdeen on Feb. 15, 1927, the son of John and Clara (VanLoo) Jasper. He attended St. Mary’s grade school and graduated from J.M. Weatherwax High School in 1945.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps after high school, hoping to serve as a pilot in World War II, but the war ended before he finished training. He then joined the Marine Corps and earned a Purple Heart in the Korean War for combat wounds suffered in the battle of Chosin Reservoir. He was honorably discharged in 1951.

He returned to Washington and went to college at the University of Washington, where he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He went to work for Weyerhaeuser in Longview and then for Lamb Grays Harbor in Hoquiam until his retirement in 1986. He holds four patents for his mechanical designs.

In 1973, Ron married Elaine J. Brittain.

Ron enjoyed the great outdoors, was an avid fisherman, hunter and rode motorcycles. He held a small aircraft pilot’s license and commercial captain’s license. He also loved to travel throughout the Southwest in his motor home.

Ron is survived by his wife of 41 years, Elaine Jasper of Hoquiam; a brother, Jack Jasper of Westport; sisters Delores Lauzon of Bremerton and Patricia Lonac of Aberdeen; Seven children, 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside inurnment service with military honors will be held on Friday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. at the Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen. A reception will be held following the graveside service at the Hoquiam VFW at 407 7th St., Hoquiam.

The family suggests that donations can be made at www. woundedwarriorproject.org to offset uncovered medical equipment costs for our veterans.

Janice Christine Sherman

Longtime Westport resident, Janice Christine Sherman passed away on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. She was 84. Janice was born July 14, 1930, in Cherokee, N.C. to Perry and Ethel (Arwood) Bradley. She was raised in Robbinsville, N.C. and graduated from Robbinsville High School.

Janice had also lived in the Seattle area in the late 1950s, Auburn, Alaska and Arizona. She worked in a drug store for many years in Auburn and also worked in child care in Renton.

Janice was a member of the South Beach Presbyterian Church in Westport. She was a homemaker and loved dogs and had many in her life including Babe, Dino, Trixie and Sam. Janice was always very willing to help her family and friends.

Janice is survived by her companion Mel Preston of Grayland, Wash., her loving son Steven (Pamela) White of Sun City, Ariz., brother Jack Bradley of Kent, Wash., two grandchildren, Lawrence and Stacey White and great-granddaughter Haile C. Contreras. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Max Bradley.

A celebration of her life was held on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the South Beach Presbyterian Church in Westport.

Arrangements are entrusted to Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.
