Margie Maxine Cox
Margie (Evans) Cox, a longtime McCleary resident, passed away peacefully on Oct. 25, 2014, at the age of 92. She was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Arcadia, Kan. Her parents, Judson and Virginia Evans, moved their family to Satsop, Wash., when she was a child. She had six sisters and two brothers. Margie graduated from Elma High School. On Nov. 16, 1940, she married
Raymond Cox. They were married
74 years. Margie was a homemaker and later worked as a cook at the Pines Restaurant in McCleary. She was a member of the VFW Post 5564 Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, Gene (Dixie) Cox of McCleary and Barry (Frieda) Cox of Federal Way, nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Raymond Cox, and two daughters, Wilma Leahy and Cindy Fredrickson, preceded her in death.
Margie was a sweet and gentle soul who was loved by all. A graveside service will be held at a date to be determined.
Lillie Bernice Foster
Lillie Bernice Foster of Aberdeen passed away at Grays Harbor Community Hospital peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014. She was 88. Lillie was born Sept. 18, 1926, in Oakville, Iowa, to Fredrick and Jessie (Leainteen) Lott.
On Oct. 22, 1944, Lillie married
the love of her life Richard Anderson Foster in Wapello, Iowa. He passed away Nov. 27, 2013.
Lillie and Richard moved to Grays Harbor on July 15, 1946, he went to work at Weyerhaeuser and she was a stay-at-home mom raising five children. For a time she did work for Kress Dime Store and May’s Nursing Home.
Lillie was a member of Central Park Neighborhood Church, where she played the piano and sang with her late husband Richard.
Lillie enjoyed sewing and embroidery. She loved to teach her children how to cook, can and bake and about all the things she learned over the years. She loved spending time with her family and traveling to see family and friends.
Lillie is survived by her daughters, Connie (Bill) Pinneo, Marilyn Spence, Diana (David) Hasbrouck, Judy (Chuck) Moses and daughter-in-law Linda Foster and her sister Frances Scoggins of Stauton, Ill., who is the last of the family of 13 children. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Richard, Lille is preceded in death by her son Jerry Foster, four brothers, Willie, Sam, Freddy and C.R. Lott, seven sisters, Clara Jean Lott, Anna Bell Ricketts, Harriett May Severns, Mallie Dagen, Pauline Decker, Sylvia Noble and Carol Kobs and two grandsons.
A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Central Park Neighborhood Church located at 7010 Bryrwood Dr. in Aberdeen. Pastor Steve Gaffney and Pastor Brian Herrick will officiate. A graveside service will follow at the Masonic cemetery in Elma where she will be laid to rest beside her husband Richard.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.
Comella Jean Smith
Comella Jean Smith, 84, former resident of Aberdeen, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, at St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, Wash.
She was born on Sept. 21, 1930, in Hickman, Ky. She is survived by three sisters; five grandchildren: Carla Stanfill of Elma, Clark Pierce of Farmington, Mo., David Pierce Jr. of Portland, Ore., Shannon Vonhof of Hoquiam and Peggy Dotson of Auburn, Wash.; and many great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service for Comella at the Oakville Assembly of God Church on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, at 1 p.m.
Cremation arrangements are by Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.
Ida E. Kaplan
Ida Elizabeth Kaplan, longtime resident of Aberdeen, passed away Oct. 15, 2014. Mrs. Kaplan was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Minneapolis, Minn. (Hennepin County), to Isabelle and Homer Spears.
She married
Joseph Kaplan Sr. in Lovelock, Nev., in 1942, and they traveled the United States from Boston, Mass., to the Florida Keys, Joe taking many different jobs along the way. They settled for a while in Neillsville and Janesville, Wis., Jerome, Idaho, and Kamas, Utah, before coming to Aberdeen, Wash. They divorced in 1959.
Mrs. Kaplan cooked at many local restaurants. A few of them were Scotts Grand Central Market in Aberdeen, the Nordic Inn, the Aberdeen Elks (weekends), Burgess Colonial West in Hoquiam, the Bee Hive in Montesano, the Sundance Inn in Hoquiam, the Islander in Westport for Neddie and the Ocean Shores Inn.
Her favorite places to travel were Reno and Las Vegas.
Survivors include a daughter, Terry Guiberson of Hoquiam; two sons, Guy M. and Joe Kaplan Jr. of Aberdeen; a brother, Clyde Spears of Reno, Nev., and her sister Gladys Vessey of Aberdeen. Two brothers, Rollo and Wayne Spears of California, died previously as well as her 15-year-old granddaughter, Hali, who died in a car accident in 1992.
She has nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kaplan attended the Calvary Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She also studied with the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
There will be no funeral. She will be cremated and laid to rest on Nov. 6, 2014, at Fern Hill cemetery at 1 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at 2:30 p.m. at 619 South Clark St. in Aberdeen.
Terrence Michael O’Connor
Terrence Michael O’Connor, born Jan. 14, 1936, in Chicago, Ill., passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Oct. 30, 2014.
Terry was raised in Amanda Park, Wash., with his sister, Laura O’Connor Sugden, by his parents, William J. and Irene O’Connor. He graduated from Lake Quinault High School, then Washington State College in 1959. He taught in Garfield, Wash., Kahlotus, Wash., and Decker Lake, British Columbia, before becoming a beloved grade school teacher at Montesano’s Simpson Avenue Elementary in 1967. He was also employed at the Weyerhaeuser laboratory in Aberdeen.
He enjoyed spending time as an active volunteer with the Red Cross, running his semi-trucks and cultivating the family farm. The teaching didn’t end with a school bell as he was constantly teaching and exposing his children and grandchildren to new experiences.
He is survived by Sharon, his wife of 54 years, along with sons Rick of Spokane, Wash., Mark of Randle, Wash., and Rod of Williston, N.D., and daughters Sue Brock of Sequim, Wash., Michele Badrov of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Jeanne Russell of Montesano, Wash., along with 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Cheryl O’Connor.
Services are planned for Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. at Calvary Chapel of Montesano, 114 W Marcy Ave, with fellowship immediately following.
Constance E. Strukel
OLYMPIA — Shelton resident Constance Elizabeth Strukel died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014. She was 73. The funeral home is trying to locate family members in the Grays Harbor area. Please contact the Woodlawn Funeral Home in Lacey at 360-491-3000.
Janice Sherman
Janice C. Sherman of Westport died Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 84.

Leeds Atkinson
Harbor resident Leeds C. Atkinson died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, in Hoquiam. He was 51.

Arthur A. W. David
Former Los Angeles County Assessor Arthur Adolph William David of Aberdeen died Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, at Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation. He was 91.
He had also lived in Wexford, Ireland.
Arrangements are by the Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.
Gilbert G. “Gil” Johnson
MONTESANO — Longtime Harborite Gilbert George “Gil” Johnson died Thursday, Oct. 23. 2014, at his Montesano, home following a short illness. He was 93.
During World War II he joined the U.S. Army and served with the 399th Military Police Escort Guard and the 1285th Engineering Combat Battalion.
He worked for the ITT Rayonier Pulp Mill for 36 years as an instrument control technician.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Hoquiam Elks Restoration Fund.
A celebration of his life will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hoquiam Elks Lodge followed by a potluck.
Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.
Daniel J. Carroll
BRIGHTON, COLO. — Former Grays Harbor resident Daniel John Carroll, 56, died at his home in Brighton, Colo. Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014.
He was born in Aberdeen and had worked as a hodcarrier. Most recently, he was a supervisor of masonry construction in a Brighton company.
A celebration of his life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the D&R Event Center in Aberdeen.
Arrangements are by the Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.
Marie Akerlund
Marie I. Akerlund, Aberdeen resident and former music teacher for McCleary School District and violin instructor in Aberdeen, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 87.
A memorial service is being planned for later and details will follow in The Daily World.
Cremation arrangements are by Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.
Daniel John Carroll
Daniel John Carroll, 56, a former resident of Aberdeen, died at his home in Brighton, Colo., Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014. He was born in Aberdeen July 15, 1958, the son of Richard E. and Joyce A. (Daniels) Carroll. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1976 and had worked for the Kawasaki Motorcycle dealer in Aberdeen.
Dan would later work in construction in Seattle for a number of years as a hod carrier, working his way to be a supervisor of masonry work. He went to Colorado in 2013 doing the same work and at the time of his death was the masonry supervisor for the C. Morgan Company in Brighton.
He was a member of the Hod Carriers & General Laborers Local No. 242, Seattle. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, collecting silver and old coins and working on the internet. He also was a great fan of Elvis.
Dan is survived by a sister, Vicki and husband Ron Lutzvick of Cosmopolis, and two brothers, Mark Carroll of Montesano and Rocky Carroll of Seattle. A brother, David, died before him in 1990.
Dan dearly loved his nieces and nephews. He was always the life of the party.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the D&R Event Center in downtown Aberdeen.

Audrey J. “Juanita” Perez
Audrey J. “Juanita” Perez, 82, a resident of Ketchikan, Alaska, died at Providence St. Peter Hospital, Olympia, Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014. She was born in Portland, Ore., Sept. 9, 1932, the daughter of Roy and Ruby (Conrow) MCclung.
She had attended schools in Oregon City, Ore. and went to Alaska at the age of 17. She remained in Alaska most of the rest of her life. For twelve years she had lived in Springfield, Ore. where she was a lab technician for Foster Farms. She had also lived in Aberdeen for a short time. In her early years she had also worked in canneries in Alaska and picked fruit in the West.
She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, crocheting, making fudge for everyone at Christmas and especially living for her kids and grandchildren.
She was a born-again Christian.
Juanita was married
to James Smith in Portland in 1948 and he died in Seaside, Ore., in 1992. She then married
Martin T. Perez Sr. in Ketchikan in 1995. He died there just this last June. He was the Chief of the Brown Bear Clan of the Tlingit Tribe of Alaska.
Juanita had come to Aberdeen to visit family when ill health began. Among her survivors are a son, Leslie Smith of Aberdeen; a daughter, Judy Kivi of Ketchikan, Alaska; a brother, Bill Fitzgerald of Springfield, Ore.; a sister, Alleen Green of Quartzite, Ariz.; six grandchildren: Jeffrey, Christerpher, Bryan and Rodney Perez and Eugenia Buchanan and Aaron K. Smith, and six great-grandchildren. A son, Gary, died before her in 1955.
A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen. Private entombment will take place in Fern Hill Colonnades.

Dolores I. Mode
Longtime Grays Harbor resident Dolores I. Mode of Montesano passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014, with her daughter Dorene by her side. Dolores was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Joplin, Mo., to George and Ruth (Frie) VanGundy.
On July 14, 1962, she married
the love of her life Bert Mode in Pierce County, Wash. He passed away in February 1992.
Dolores earned her business degree at Grays Harbor College and was employed for over 40 years by the Grays Harbor County Court System, serving many years as the court administrator.
Dolores was passionate about barbershop singing, participating in quartets, chorus and directing. She received her 50 year charter membership recognition in Nashville in 2009.
She loved spending time at the beach cabin, clam digging and camping. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and caring for her grandchildren.
Dolores is survived by her loving children, daughters Lyndene Fritts (Jerry) of Grants Pass, Ore., Dorene Ellis (Don) of Kirkland, Wash. and son Bryce Mode of Montesano, Wash.; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
In addition to her beloved husband Bert, she is also preceded in death by her mother and father Ruth and Shorty and sister Dortha “DD” Wise.
A memorial service with reception to follow will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14th at Harrison Family Mortuary located at 311 W. Market St. in Aberdeen.
