Following his discharge, he graduated from Grays Harbor College and then went on to Central Washington State. He spent 30 years with Weyerhaeuser, working in Aberdeen and Enumclaw. At the time of his retirement, he was the Northwest Regional Quality Control supervisor. He enjoyed fishing, clam digging and golfing. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Glow (Nazer) McGuire; children Marcie Belfield (Lee), Marilee Garland (Rick) and Tom McGuire; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Walter (Bunny) McGuire.

Leah Rae Woods
3-30-1951 to 12-20-2012

This is a belated obituary to inform the Ocean Shores community of Leah’s passing nearly two years ago, Dec. 20, 2012, of lung cancer. One of the more aggravating aspects of it, besides the pain, was the fact she was diagnosed at Stage IV two weeks after forced retirement from her job at the Ocean Shores, Wash. State Liquor Store, when the Nov. 2011 election put the state out of the liquor business.

Leah was born March 30, 1951, the youngest of three of Ruth and Ray Grigal of Seattle. She graduated from Queen Anne High School, married Greg Woods November 1971, and had two daughters, one of whom survives her. Leah had a big heart and more energy than most people. She was good at talking and laughing, and was fearless as well (for instance, she did a hand stand off the high dive of a pool and then dove from that position). She graduated from from Edmonds Community College with five certifications in the helping professions, trying to improve peoples’ emotional health. She moved to Ocean Shores in 1999, largely to take care of her father who moved to Pacific Beach after the death of his wife. She was an active member in the Ocean Shores Lions Club. She is survived and greatly missed by her daughter, two grandsons, sister, brother, and though an ex-husband, still great friend. Remembrances to Danielle Sterling or Deborah Craig on Facebook.

Robert W. Robbins

Robert W. Robbins, (Ribby), was born June 18, 1923, in Tacoma, Wash., and passed away Oct. 11, 2014, in his assisted living home in Tacoma of pneumonia and complications.

Bob was raised in Aberdeen, Wash., with fond memories of Canyon Court. He graduated from Weatherwax (Aberdeen High) in 1941 and he briefly attended Grays Harbor J.C. until World War II came along. He served 3 1/2 years as a Navy Medical Corpsman at Pearl Harbor, well after the attack.

After the war, he attended Washington State where he majored in business and received his B.A. He was a proud member of the TKE fraternity where he made lifelong friends. He played basketball and volleyball for the colleges he attended.

After college he went to work for Weyerhaeuser starting in sales, then moving to new product planning and development. There he helped implement transporting lumber from boxcars to flatcars, and the innovation of wrapping lumber in a water resistant material, still in use today. In his last years with Weyerhaeuser he worked with The American Railroad Association implementing many transportation improvements. He retired after 38 years in 1988.

In 1948 he married Jane Wyant, and had two daughters. They later divorced.

In 1961 Bob married Nita Reid. They were married until her death in 2002.

Bob traveled the world (and all 50 states) through his work, and on his own. He was fortunate later in life to have met Helen Waddle of Spokane, Wash., who joined him in his traveling, cruising, dancing and enjoying life. As a history buff, the highlight of his travels was being able to visit Waterloo. He had a love for fishing, cruising, dancing, music (especially big band music), swimming and was an avid reader . He played drums in high school and was a member of an all boys dance band where he was paid two silver dollars a night. His missed a calling in life, according to his daughters, was not being a sports writer or sportscaster! He especially enjoyed college football.

He was fortunate to have lived with views of his beloved Mt. Rainier, lakes, and/or Puget Sound.

Bob’s humor, quick wit, and personality endeared him to friends, family and strangers alike.

His motto in life: Long Life, Quick Death, and Lots of Fun in-between (which, for the most part happened).

Bob leaves behind his daughters, Janet Robbins of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Kathy Robbins of Salt Lake City, Utah, and step son, Gary Reid of Everett, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents, William G. Robbins and Ethel Irene Robbins, wife Nita, step son Dale Reid, and Helen Waddle.

Per his wishes, no services have been planned.

Garrett Lee “Whitey” Danner

Garrett Lee “Whitey” Danner passed away peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 19, 2014, surrounded by his family at St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash.

Whitey was born on March 7, 1941, to Myrtle Wright Logan. He grew up in Cosmopolis, lived most of his life in Montesano, and retired to Mesa, Ariz.

He was nicknamed Whitey as a young boy playing baseball because of his striking white hair. To this day, most people know him as Whitey. When he graduated from Cosmopolis in 8th grade, he was a recipient of the Cooney Award, given to the boy and girl with the highest GPAs. He excelled in his favorite class, math, and passed that aptitude on to his kids.

He served in the U.S. Army, worked at Grays Harbor Paper, and owned Harbor Drywall. There didn’t seem to be anything Whitey couldn’t do (or figure out a way to do), such as fixing cars, wiring, plumbing, drywall, or building houses. Whitey was the original MacGyver of building techniques, always coming up with new ideas, and he loved to share them. Whitey had a generous heart and enjoyed helping people. He touched the lives of many through offering his handyman skills, buying them a beer, loaning out tools, or engaging in conversation. He made friends wherever he went.

He and his previous wife, Sandy Danner, raised their children in Montesano. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them. He enjoyed golfing with friends and achieved a hole-in-one at Oaksridge in 1994. He maintained his trademark sense of humor and independence all the way to the end.

He is survived by his daughter Patty Danner (Steve Barrett); daughter Diane (Eric) Lenius; son Kevin Rory Danner; six grandchildren, Natalie, Melissa, Jason, Evan, Coleman and Owen; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mom, Myrtle Logan, and beloved brother, Ralph “Tubby” Danner. He is also survived by his siblings, Jean Watkins, Judy Ledesma and Patrick Galligan, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial gathering on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Montesano Moose Lodge, 3 Monte Elma Rd, Montesano, WA 98563.

The family requests all donations be sent to the Union Gospel Mission in Aberdeen. In years past, Whitey would often eat lunch at the old Smoke Shop and send a plate out for someone who needed the meal.

Marie Irene Akerlund

Marie Irene Akerlund, 87, a longtime Aberdeen resident, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Wash.

Weatherwax High School in 1944 and the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music in 1949. On Aug. 29, 1949, she married Paul E. Akerlund. She taught music at Highline High School in Seattle and also at the McCleary School before moving back to Aberdeen in 1964.

She was an accomplished violinist. She performed with the Grays Harbor Symphony, played chamber music and taught numerous students to appreciate music and the arts. Her students were repeatedly honored with top scores at annual school music competitions. She loved gardening and her beloved Dachshund, Fred. An avid antique collector and cook, Marie was well known for her delicious Italian recipes handed down from her parents who owned and operated the Toscano Italian Restaurant in Aberdeen in the 1940s. Her brother, Reno later moved the family business to Tacoma where her nephew, Jerry Rosi continues to sell the famous spaghetti sauce.

Marie is survived by daughter Dr. Paula Akerlund, son-in-law Michael Williams and daughter Debra Akerlund of Aberdeen and son Paul Wendell Akerlund, daughter-in-law Lisa Akerlund of San Diego, Calif., brother Edward Rosi of Hoquiam, granddaughters Dr. Christine Akerlund Trask of Madison, Wis., Air Force Capt. Rachel Akerlund of Henderson, Nev., Alexandria Akerlund of Seattle, Wash., and grandson Paul Buzz Akerlund of San Diego, Calif. She was preceded in death by husband Paul E. Akerlund in 1991, a daughter Julia Akerlund in 1993 and a younger brother, Robert Rosi. Donations in Marie’s memory may be made to the Marie Akerlund Orchestra Award at Aberdeen High School.

A memorial service will take place at a later date and details will follow in The Daily World.

Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Gil was preceded in death by Shirley, his wife of 67 years; his parents, Ivar and Anna; his brothers, Alex, Walter and Willie and his sister, Gladis.

Gilbert had always said that in lieu of flowers, he would like his friends to consider joining the Hoquiam Elks Lodge Family or make a donation to the Hoquiam Elks Restoration Fund.

A celebration of his life will be held from 12 Noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, at the Hoquiam Elks Lodge, 624 K Street.
