LaRue McGuire

After enjoying 97 years, LaRue McGuire passed away quietly on Oct. 9, 2014, while encircled by the love of family.

LaRue was born on Oct. 26, 1916, at Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia. She grew up in the scattered lumber camps and towns of Lewis County. In 1934, she graduated from Mossyrock High School. She married Harvey McGuire in 1936. LaRue and Harvey lived and worked in Raymond from 1939 until Harvey’s passing in 2001. LaRue continued with her active life in Raymond until 2008 when she moved to Vancouver, Wash. to be close to her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

LaRue will be remembered for her quiet and giving ways. For those close to her, she will be remembered always as a great cook and gracious hostess. LaRue was a worker, and when asked recently about the secret of a long life, she replied, “Just keep working, and don’t complain.” From 1961 until 1978, LaRue worked as a cook at Raymond High School. Students who worked in the cafeteria with her will remember both her caring ways and strong guidance. She expected the best from them, and got it.

LaRue was a member of Raymond United Church. She was active as a volunteer in school reading programs, the Ministerial Association Thrift Store, and the Raymond Visitors Center. She is survived by her sister Bernice Baker; daughters Nadine Boren and Carol Hall; and son Duane McGuire. She has six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, at The Fern Hill cemetery, Menlo, Wash. 98577. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Steven Paul Auld Sr.

Steve died on September 10, 2014 due to a traffic, pedestrian accident. He was born in Aberdeen March 24, 1957 and grew up in Hoquiam. His favorite sport was football. He played football and ran track for Hoquiam Jr. and Sr. High School. His freshman year he ran the fastest time in the 200 meter. His biggest joy was taking his family camping and taking his boat to the Auld reunions and pulling the kids around the lake on tubes and teaching the adults how to water ski.

He leaves his daughters, Lisa Williams (Dustin), Kassie Carrington (Jason) and Megan Auld, three siblings, Ella Lewin (John), Linda Boober (George) and Larry Auld (Kay). He has three grandchildren and eight nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by his son, Steven, Jr., his mother, Clara Lee Auld and his sister, Georgia Auld.

He will be greatly missed.

Milton Dewitt “Bud” Bourke

Bud was born in Aberdeen on July 26, 1930, to Edward James and Irene Elizabeth (Humble) Bourke.

He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1949. He did miscellaneous jobs until 1950 and then entered the Air Force. He was discharged in 1954. Then he entered the electrical apprentice program, he became a journeyman wireman where he worked until his retirement.

He was married to Audrey (Horne) Bourke in 1958, they divorced in 1986. He married Mary Ellen Kendrick in 1987.

He was a member of the Lions Club of Central Park for 45 years, lifetime member of Aberdeen Elks, Aberdeen VFW and a member of the Aberdeen Eagles. He managed Pizza Pete Babe Ruth baseball teams. Bud was an avid fisherman and hunter. He would do anything for family and friends. Bud was an usher at the Central Park Methodist Church for years. He just last month went to his 65th class reunion and enjoyed it so much.

Bud is survived by his wife, his sons Edward and Rodrick, stepchildren Cindy (Albert) Newman and Karen (Bob) Wardlow and a grandchild Jamey (Angela) and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his two sisters Mary May (Bourke) Kromm and Margaret (Bourke) Tolomei.

At his request there will be no funeral. A Celebration of his Life will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Aberdeen Elks located at 1712 Boone Street in Aberdeen.

Adam John Aaro

Adam John Aaro, 43, former Shelton resident and 1989 graduate of Shelton High School, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014, at his home in Aberdeen, Wash.

Adam was born on March 12, 1971, in Shelton to John Richard and Wanda Rae (Wallin) Aaro. He lived in Shelton and then Chehalis until moving to Salinas, Calif., at age 8. He returned to Shelton in 1987, where he graduated high school. He moved to Idaho a year later and studied automotive technology at a technical school there for a year. He returned to Shelton and went to work in the timber industry working in a logging yard until injuring his back on the job. He moved to Aberdeen two years ago to attend Grays Harbor College where he was studying to be a Surveyor. Adam enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Adam is survived by a son, Dwight Aaro of Colorado; his mother, Wanda, and stepfather, John Mann, of La Quinta, Calif.; a sister, Amanda and husband Jeff Fassio of Morgan Hill Calif.; two nieces: Alyssa and Andrea Fassio. Adam was preceded in death by his father, John R. Aaro, and grandmother, Merlien Collar.

There will be a celebration of life for Adam in the summer and details will be announced later. Adam’s sister, Amanda Fassio will be posting details on her Facebook page.

Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, Wash.

Sharon Ann Bonell

Sharon Ann Bonell, 76, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen following an extended illness. Sharon was born on Aug. 15, 1938, in Hoquiam, Wash. to Samuel R. and Lucille E. (Runyon) Louderback. She was the youngest of fourteen children.

Sharon was raised in Hoquiam and graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1956. While in school she was a song queen and that allowed her to show her spirit and passion for the Hoquiam Grizzlies. She was a die hard Hoquiam supporter all of her life. It was in high school where she met Ernest L. Bonell who was the love of her life. At the time of her passing they had been married for over 58 years.

Together they enjoyed many road trips, spending time at their summer home at Lake Nahwatzel and watching the sporting events of their children and grandchildren. Sharon had a love for sports and enjoyed watching baseball, basketball and football games. You could always find her rooting and supporting her children and grandchildren as they played, she was their No. 1 fan. As much as she enjoyed sports, nothing compared to her love of spending time with her family. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother as well as an incredible cook and gifted gardener.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Ernest of the family home; four sons, Larry, Scott, Brad and Ron; eight grandchildren, Brandon, Trevor, Corey, Skyler, Ashley, Brianne, Katelyn and Jordyn; four great-grandchildren, Joseph, Maycee, Kenzi and Kaileah; a brother, Junior; a sister Nancy and numerous other relatives.

Her loving memories, huge smile, endless stories, sense of humor and her infinite wisdom will be held close to all of our hearts.

She now walks among Angels with her son, Scott. She will be missed but we are content knowing she is at peace with the Lord.

The family requests donations be sent to Relay For Life, P.O. Box 212, Aberdeen, WA 98520.

A celebration of her life with a potluck following will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at the First Baptist Church, 721 Eklund Avenue in Hoquiam.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 – 5th Street in Hoquiam.

Donald R. Fisher

Donald Fisher died peacefully in his sleep in Seaside, Ore., on Oct. 9, 2014. He was just shy of his 89th birthday.

Don was born in Dickinson, N.D. on Nov. 14, 1925, to Willard and Magdalene Fisher. He had one brother Richard (Buddy) and two sisters, Patricia Maixner and Dorothy Mae Kostelecky.

Don served in World War II in the Army Air Corps in Okinawa, Japan in spite of his brother losing his life earlier in the war.

After the war, he went west with some war buddies. Don married Ruth in 1953. In 1954, Donna was born, and Richard joined the family in 1956.

After graduating from the University of Oregon, Don worked for Weyerhaeuser Company in Cosmopolis, Wash., until his retirement in 1983. He retired early to care for Ruth during a long illness. Ruth died in 1993. Don married Laura Tompkins in 1994, and she passed away in January of 1998.

Don moved to Seaside in 1991 where he worked part time in real estate. He was a member of the Seaside Museum Kazoo Band, the Seaside Elks, and St. Vincent De Paul society. Don devoted himself to Our Lady of Victory Catholic church where he served mass daily for many years.

Don enjoyed beach combing, kite flying, working at the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry, playing golf and billiards with his buddies from the Elks, having coffee with friends after daily mass, and visiting his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his sister Dorothy Mae; his daughter Donna (Fisher Becker), his son Richard, his grandchildren Matthew Becker and Samuel Becker; his nieces Georgia Kostelecky, and Mary Maixner Bice, and nephews Will Kostelecky, Tony Kostelecky, and John Maixner.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Seaside.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s name may be sent to St. Vincent De Paul, P.O. Box 1189, Seaside, OR 97138.

Hughes-Ransom Mortuary in Seaside is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Porter Witherspoon

Louise Porter Witherspoon, age 91, a resident of Ocean Shores since 2005, died on Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Aberdeen. Mrs. Witherspoon was born on Jan. 26, 1923, in Savannah, Hardin County, Tenn.

After attending business college, she and Hollis LeRoy Witherspoon were married on Dec. 7, 1945 in Phenix City, Ala. Mr. Witherspoon was an engineer for Stone & Webster Engineering Corp. which required the family to move on a yearly basis to job sites throughout the United States. During this time, Mrs. Witherspoon attended Methodist Churches where she shared her love of children by volunteering in the nurseries of the churches.

After Mr. Witherspoon’s retirement, the couple located in Kennett, Mo., to oversee the family farm. They remained there for 10 years before moving to Americus, Ga. They moved into their new home on their 50th wedding anniversary, Dec. 7, 1995. Mr. Witherspoon was in poor health and died in April of 1996.

She is remembered for her love of family, being an excellent seamstress, cook and homemaker.

Surviving relatives include three daughters and their husbands, Eleanor and Gary D. Miller of Ocean Shores, Wash., Holly and Gary C. Keyes of West Harrison, Ind. and Carol and Michael R. Denham of Americus, Ga.; one sister, Mary Virginia Porter McHugh of Hattiesburg, Miss.; a brother, William J. Porter of Lake Village, Ark.; a sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Porter of Kennett, Mo.; five grandchildren, Carol Ann Ditmyer Smith, Tyler R. Denham, Aaron H. Keyes, Andrew M. Denham and Gavin L. Miller; two great grandchildren, Codey Ditmyer and Michael Declan Keyes and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded by two brothers, Robert and Joe Porter.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam, Wash. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 9:30 a.m..

Graveside services and interment will be in Americus, Ga. under the direction of Hancock Funeral Home.

Preston John Hejna

Former Hoquiam resident, Preston John Hejna, 54, passed away on Oct. 7, 2014, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia, after a battle with cancer.

Preston was born on March 5, 1960, in Britt, Iowa, to Frank Henja Jr. and Geri Henja.

In 1972 he relocated to Hoquiam, Wash.

He helped care for his brother Shawn Hejna and was a maintenance man for the Edmond Meany Hotel in Seattle, Wash.

He is survived by his brothers, Frank Hejna III, Travis Peterson (half brother) and Pete Peterson (step-brother); sister Wendy Peterson and three half sisters, Shelly, Sherry and Sunni from Lincoln, Neb.

A Celebration of Preston’s Life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Hoquiam-729 Eklund St. at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18.

Eunice Edna Ekman

Eunice Edna Gordhamer Ekman, was born in Manston Township near Rothsay, Minn., on Aug. 11, 1920, to Otis and Melvina Gordhamer. She passed away in Aberdeen, Wash., on Sept. 6, 2014, surrounded by family. She was 94. Eunice grew up in a farming family in western Minn., graduating from Barnsville High School in 1939. During World War II, she moved to Washington where she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” in Boeing aircraft for the war effort.

In Seattle she met her future husband Chester A. (Chet) Ekman. They married on Jan. 1, 1945.

The couple had four children who were raised in the Hoquiam/Aberdeen area. Eunice was active in the North Shore Home Economics Club, PTA, 4-H and the Eagles. She had a lovely voice and sang for a time with the Sweet Adelines. She baked bread every Saturday morning, canned peaches, and made homemade root beer. She managed family rentals for many years. She also did upolstery and made flower arrangements. Known for her quick wit, she was kind to everyone and never met a stranger.

After losing her husband in 1989, Eunice traveled extensively with the Grays Harbor Senior Travel Club and with her family. She took many excursions across the U.S., visited Alaska and Hawaii, and traveled to Europe several times. She exercised regularly at the Hoquiam pool, and later at the Aberdeen YMCA pool. She was an original member of the Aqua Notes singing group. She embroidered numerous baby quilts in her later years.

Eunice is survived by her brother and his wife, Kenneth and LouAnn Gordhamer; her four children and spouses, Skip (Martin) and Linnea Ekman of Aberdeen, Linda and Eldon Simmons of Colorado, Arnold and Alice Ekman of Hoquiam, and Judy Ekman and John Schmidt of Hoquiam; nine grandchildren, Erika Ekman-Jones, Andrew Simmons, Heidi Sprouffske, Martie Ekman, Eric Ekman, Kristie Hutchinson, Sarah Schmidt, Clara Schmidt and Tyler Schmidt; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to the Eunice Ekman Memorial Fund at the Bank of the Pacific in Aberdeen the beneficiary of which will be the Aberdeen YMCA.

A celebration of life will be held at the home of Judy Ekman and John Schmidt, 24 Broadway Hill, Hoquiam (Grays Harbor City) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014.

Edwin Russell Anderson

Edwin Russell Anderson, 91, longtime Aberdeen resident and former truck driver for Puget Sound Truck Lines, died at his home in Aberdeen on Saturday morning, Oct. 11, 2014.

Ed was born on May 3, 1923, in Manitoba, Canada, to Peter S. and Nanny (Lind) Anderson. He graduated from high school in Winnipeg, Canada in 1939. Edwin married Mary M. ‘Marge’ Batenchuk in Winnipeg in 1949 and together they moved to Aberdeen that same year. Marge passed away on June 3, 1996.

Edwin worked for Puget Sound Truck Lines and was a member of the Teamsters Union. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and travel and he was an avid sports fan; he especially enjoyed watching the Seattle Mainers.

Ed is survived by his daughter-in-law, Barbara Anderson of Central Park; four grandchildren: Mitchell (Becca) Anderson of Aberdeen, Craig Anderson of San Diego, Calif., Kristina (Todd) Perrault of Olympia, Wash., and James Anderson of Olympia, Wash. Edwin also has two surviving great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Kenneth Anderson in 2005 and a brother Alfred Anderson.

Per his request, there will be no services.

Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Pamela J. Lee

Pamela Joye Lee of Aberdeen died at her home on Monday, Oct. 13, 2014. She was 61.

Cremation arrangements are by the Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.

Gary Madison

A celebration of life for longtime Hoquiamite Gary Madison, who died on Oct. 5 in Tacoma, will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Hoquiam VFW.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Mary N. Farmer

Mary Nell Farmer, a longtime Montesano resident and waitress, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 87.

A celebration of her life is being planned for later and an obituary with details will follow in The Daily World.

Cremation arrangements are by the Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Mary L. Costello

ELMA — Mary Louise Costello of Elma died at her home on Monday, Oct. 13, 2014. She was 91.

Arrangements are pending through the Harrison Family Mortuary of Montesano.

William ‘Buddy’ Carroll

William ‘Buddy’ Carroll passed away surrounded by family, at home in Aberdeen on Oct. 7, 2014.

Legendary Olympic Air Pilot, Buddy fought every worthy cause, saved lives and touched many others. He was a loving husband, father and friend.
