Patricia Ann McCullough
(1937-2014)
With her son John and partner Barb by her side, former Hoquiam resident Patricia A. McCullough died Aug. 29, 2014, at her home in Mesa, Ariz.
Born in Hoquiam on Oct. 11, 1937, Pat was the third child of Irvin Earl and Margaret (McNamara) Albertson. Along with siblings Margaret, Bonnie, and Orris, she grew up on East Hoquiam Road in a house her dad built. At Wishkah Valley School, she earned letters playing both basketball and softball before graduating as salutatorian in 1955. Pat then served our country in the Air Force as a flight attendant for troops stationed in Europe and the Middle East.
After taking a B.A. at Seattle University (summa cum laude, 1972) and an M.A. at Pacific Lutheran University (1974), Pat embarked on a career in health care administration. While working at Fort Lewis, she was recognized as Washington State Federal Employee of the Year, and, as Vice President for Operations at Comprehensive Care Corporation (COMPCARE). She supervised chemical dependency treatment programs nationwide, including one in Aberdeen’s St. Joseph’s Hospital. In 1993 Pat joined American Transitional Hospitals, where she helped create a new concept of “Hospitals within Hospitals” for patients requiring long-term intensive care.
Outside of work, Pat enjoyed life with her surviving partner Barbara Try, for twenty seven years. Pat and Barb enjoyed playing cards with their friends, cultivating roses, and caring for their beloved cats (Beast and Betsy) and dogs (Tasha, Sami, Sara, and Scooby). They especially liked to travel in their Roadtrek, stopping frequently to visit relatives in Arizona, Utah, California, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri. Between visits, they admired the beautiful countryside of New England, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island; attended Air Force reunions in South Carolina and Ohio; and haunted street fairs everywhere, especially Seattle’s Pike Street Market. But perhaps their most memorable trip was to England and Ireland. On a visit to Liverpool, Pat walked where her mother grew up to marry that tall American serving in the Merchant Marine; and while touring Blarney Castle, Pat and Bonnie even sat on the bench their parents had shared in 1929.
