Lillian Sigurdson Bodwell Hayne
Lillian Sigurdson Bodwell Hayne, 92, peacefully passed away on November 9, 2013, at Willapa Harbor Care Center in Raymond. Lillian was born in Seaside, Ore., on October 10, 1921, to Gunnar and Mary (Coma) Sigurdson. She was the oldest of five children.
She displayed much strength in her life as she endured the death of her first husband, Burke in Ketchikan, Alaska. At 30 years old, with her four small children, she moved her family back to North Cove, Wash., to be near her parents. Five years later she married
Jack Hayne and had two more children.
While she raised children, Lillian also worked in canneries in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. She worked processing crab, shrimp, and tuna. The cold, damp environments were very hard on her physically. In her younger years she was known as the fastest crab shaker. Later she moved to hourly work. She retired at age 69 after 52 years of cannery work.
At age 80, she was no longer able to take care of her home in North Cove. She moved in with her youngest daughter, Mary in December, 2001. Lillian used to tell everyone how much she enjoyed her “apartment” in Mary’s home. She was able to maintain some independence with assistance from family.
After an illness in early September she was hospitalized at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. From there she was moved to Willapa Harbor Care Center for more extensive rehabilitation and care.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, word searches, canning, clam digging, and working in her yard.
Lillian was lovingly known as Grandma Tootsie by her family. She enjoyed having her children and grandchildren around her at family gatherings. Lillian was always proud to say that she raised six children who became productive citizens.
