Ethel M. Boatwright - January 28, 1999
Ethel Mae Boatwright, 85, a resident of Ocean Shores for eight months, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at the Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam.
She was born Oct. 20, 1913, in Shelby County, Ind., to Henry and Minnie (Zell) Bush. She was raised in Marion, Ind.
She worked as a hospice, helping the elderly in Marion before retiring in 1975.
Prior to that, she was a hotel manager in San Francisco. She was also a member of the AMVETS and American Legion in Marion.
Her hobbies included reading and crocheting.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Greenfield of Ocean Shores; two brothers, Ira Bush of Portland and Ray Norman Bush of Marion; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Three brothers and six sisters died before her.
No services are scheduled.
Jeanne M. Tieman - April 28, 1999
OCEAN SHORES - Jeanne Marilyn Tieman, 67, of Ocean Shores, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at home.
Mrs. Tieman was born Dec. 30, 1931, at Billings, Mont., to Robert L. and Bess N. (McCullough) Hill. She graduated from Billings High School in 1950 and joined the Women's Army Corps the following year.
After basic training at Fort Riley in Kansas, she completed a two-year term in Japan as a vocalist in the entertainment branch of the corps.
She was discharged in 1954 as a corporal and had earned the National Defense Medal. She returned to the United States and worked as a reservation clerk for National, American and Western Airlines.
In 1960, she married
Dale L. Tieman at Cincinnati, Ohio. He was in the military, and the couple traveled to many places in the world. They were divorced in 1976.
Mrs. Tieman then worked for the K-Mart Corp. in sales and personnel management at Greensburg, Ind.; West Palm Beach and Boynton Beach, Fla.; Billings and Miles City, Mont., and Eureka, Calif.
In 1990, she moved to Lincoln City, Ore., where she worked in the Factory Outlet Mall at Aldolpho's, Pfaltzgraff and the Hanes Champion Store.
In 1996, the Tiemans were remarried
and made their home at Ocean Shores. He died in 1997.
Mrs. Tieman was a member of the Elks Emblem Club at Ocean Shores and liked to sew, read and craft jewelry.
She is survived by a daughter, Julie A. of Renton; a son, David S. of Covington, and two sisters, Carol J. Smith of Grants Pass, Ore., and Lorraine D. Hughey of Walnut Creek, Calif.
A memory service is set for 7 tonight in the Ocean Shores United Methodist Church. Private interment will be in Hoquiam's Sunset Memorial Park.
Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary of Hoquiam.
James A. Black - December 10, 1998
MONTESANO - James Andrew Black, 66, who had lived in Montesano for two years, died of cancer Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at his home.
He was born Aug. 18, 1932, at Yakima to Robert and Alice (Sherritt) Black. He grew up in Naches and graduated from Naches High School in 1950.
He had also lived in Issaquah; Lisbon, Portugal; Virginia; Pullman; Mexico City, Mexico, and Nairobi, Kenya.
Black earned a bachelor's degree from Washington State College and a master's degree from the University of Mexico.
He had served in the Coast Guard and worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and the State Department. He retired in 1988.
On July 31, 1990, he married
Joan E. (Duncan) Stone at Colorado Springs, Colo. She survives him at Montesano.
Other survivors include two sons, David of Montesano and James of Montpelier, Vt.; a stepdaughter, Anne Weixel of Montesano; four stepsons, Duncan Stone of Montesano, Duane Stone of Brady, Bruce Stone of Duvall and Todd Stone of Seattle; a brother, David of Yakima; two sisters, Dolly Medonich of Okanogan and Roberta Forest of Sierra Madre, Calif., and 10 grandchildren. A family gathering is being planned for a later date.
Bleitz Funeral Home of Seattle was in charge of arrangements.

Bert R. 'Curly' DeMaris - April 29, 1999
SOUTH BEND - Longtime Pacific County resident Bert Roman "Curly" DeMaris, 86, of South Bend, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, in the Willapa Harbor Hospital at South Bend.
He was born Jan. 2, 1913, at Pomona, Calif., to Bert Loman and Erma (Strauss) DeMaris. His family moved to the Harbor when he was an infant. He attended school in Aberdeen.
In 1933, DeMaris moved to Raymond and worked in the logging industry. He was a partner in a logging company and later worked at various shake mills.
On Aug. 21, 1938, he married
Josephine King at Raymond. She survives him at the family home.
DeMaris enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading.
Other survivors include two daughters, Nancy Germeaux of Raymond and Joyce Kidd of South Bend; two sons, Dick of Centralia and Don of South Bend; a sister, Fran Rider of Hines, Ore.; a brother, Richard Rider of Sunnyside; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A son, Terry, died in February. Three brothers, Gerald, Dick and Stan, and a sister, Esther, also died before him.
A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, May 3, in the Menlo cemetery.
Arrangements are by Stoller's Mortuary of Raymond.

Elwood 'Woody' Lance - April 27, 1999
RAYMOND - Longtime Raymond resident Elwood R. "Woody" Lance died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at his home. He was 68.
He was born Aug. 12, 1930, at Christiana, Pa., to Ellwood and Harriet (Eavenson) Lance.
Lance served in the Navy during the Korean War and was a member of VFW Post No. 2455 of Montesano and American Legion Post No. 150 of Raymond.
He had been a logger until he was injured and had to retire.
He married
Lucille Stallcop Clevenger, who survives at the family home. Lance enjoyed woodworking and making toys for needy children. His interests included hunting and fishing, as well.
He is also survived by five daughters, Robin Jarvi of South Bend, Dennise Lance of Lynnwood, Samantha Shaffer in West Virginia, Charlene Carrier in Oklahoma, and Diane McDonald of Port Angeles; two sons, Charles and Keith Clevenger, both of Raymond; a sister, Mildred Ledsack of Vancouver, Wash.; three brothers, Tom of Everett, Marvin of Sequim and Martin of Seattle; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
Arrangements are in care of Stoller's Mortuary of Raymond.
Fred Huber
January 3, 1939 - October 5, 2015
Fred Huber was born January 3, 1939 to Swiss immigrants Joe and Hermina (Muller) Huber. Except for his time of service in the US Army, he spent his entire life living on the family dairy farm on Elk Prairie in Frances. He passed away on October 5, 2015 in the same home he was raised in.Fred graduated from Willapa Valley High School in 1957 after attending Lebam High School. He and his brothers Adolph and Conrad operated Elk Prairie Dairy. Fred was very proud of his Swiss heritage and instilled that in his children and grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of the Lewis Pacific Swiss Society and especially loved making a few trips around the dance floor there. He was also a member of the Lewis Pacific Dairymen’s Association, the American Legion, Lebam Volunteer Fire Department, and Holy Family Catholic Church.
Fred is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Wheeler); his son, Joe Huber; his daughter, Catrina Taylor and her husband, Paul; his grandchildren, Bryan, Jacob, Robin, and Kelli, and his great-grandson, Rawlind; his brother Adolph Huber and wife, Geri; his sister Rosemary Knotek; and also, the mother of his children, Mary Huber. He was preceded in death by his son, Dalton, along with his parents and his brother, Conrad.
A pot luck gathering of family and friends will take place at the Swiss Hall in Frances on Saturday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m.

Dorwin N. Fosse
February 1, 1924 - March 29, 2015
Dorwin N. Fosse, a lifetime South Bend resident died Sunday, March 29, 2015 at his home; he was 91. Dorwin was born February 1, 1924 at South Bend, WA to John and Louise (Lande) Fosse.
He was a South Bend High School graduate. Dorwin served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action and a Purple Heart when he was wounded in action in the South Pacific on February 16, 1945.
Dorwin spent his entire career working at the South Bend Boat Shop that his dad established in 1926. Throughout the years he built numerous fishing boats. Dorwin’s son, Chris, took over the family business when Dorwin semi-retired in 1987. Dorwin was an avid reader, turned wooden bowls and lamps on his lathe, always kept up with activity on the waterfront, and enjoyed his daily walks. Dorwin believed in putting faith, family and friends utmost. He was a lifetime member of the South Bend Baptist Church.
Dorwin married
Delores May 5, 1951 in South Bend; she survives him at the family home. He is also survived by two sons, Todd (Elaine) Fosse of Raymond and Chris (Sandy) Fosse of South Bend; a daughter Anne (George) McNelly of South Bend; 6 grandchildren, Kelly (Marty) Waltman, Brian Fosse, Mitchell Dean, Nick (Jessie) Fosse, Megan McNelly, and Leigh McNelly; 4 great grandchildren, Hunter, Brayden, Brenton, and Kason. A sister Agnes Steuer and a brother Arnold Fosse both preceded him in death.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the South Bend Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Willapa Harbor Helping Hands or a charity of your choice. Cremation arrangements were in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.
Velma M. Sabine - April 21, 1999
RENTON - Former Raymond resident Velma Marian Sabine of Renton died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, in the Valley Medical Center at Renton, after a long battle with lung disease. She was 75.
Mrs. Sabine was born Aug. 17, 1923, on her grandparents' farm at Hockinson to Clark County pioneers Hans Albert and Ruth Estelle (Caples) Jauhola. She lived her first years at the Youman's Logging Camp, near Pe Ell, until a forest fire caused her family to move into Pe Ell.
Her family followed logging operations around Southwest Washington and had lived in Frances, then Lebam, where she started school.
When she was in high school, the family moved to East Raymond. She graduated from Willapa Valley High School in 1941.
In November 1942, she married
Edwin Karl Sabine. The couple moved to Southern California, where he was serving in the Army. After World War II, they returned to Raymond, then moved to Renton in 1949. They had also lived in Seattle. He died before her.
Mrs. Sabine worked for many years in South King County, as a waitress, lounge manager, supervisor of a cleaning crew of disabled persons and secretary for Educational Services at Burien.
She had attended classes at the University of Washington and Renton Vocational School.
She was a life member of the Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington, Fort Vancouver Chapter 19, and of the Raymond VFW Post No. 968 Auxiliary.
Her interests included fishing, camping and family visits.
Survivors include her mother, Ruth Erford of Menlo; three children, Charlotte A. Mixon of Halibut Cove, Alaska; Lawrence R. of Renton and Theresa M. Mathieson, also of Renton, who was her caregiver; a sister, Carolyn Garrett of Menlo; a brother, Gilbert Jauhola of Seattle; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is being planned for Aug. 16 at Long Beach, during the family's annual reunion.
Donations in her memory are suggested to the Willapa Methodist Church.

MONTESANO - Twenty-three year Montesano resident Frances O. Jones died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, in the Sunrise Care and Rehabilitation Center at Montesano. She was 83.
